Opis:
This paper presents the influence of cooling water regulation on power plant net efficiency. It was examined whether, for the non-nominal low-pressure turbine load, it is justified to reduce the cooling water pump load, and how it would affect the unit net efficiency. Calculations for two types of power units were carried out: with condensing and extraction-condensing turbine. The tested condensing power plant consists of three surface condensers. The calculation included four condensers’ connections set up on the cooling water side to check how the cooling water system pressure drop affects the net unit performance. The result has confirmed that implementing serial connection decreases net efficiency when cooling water flow regulation is used, but the mixed connection should be applied when pump load is not controlled. It was proved that the cooling water flow control gives a profit for both units. Net efficiency for combined heat and power plant can be improved by 0.1–0.5 pp, the gain is remarkable below 60% of the low-pressure turbine part load. Flow control implementation in the unit with condensing turbine water control gives a similar profit just below 80% of the turbine load. Next, an influence of the additional limitations of a cooling water system (minimal total pump head, cooling tower) affecting the feasibility of implementing the water control has been considered. Applying a multi-cell forced draft cooling tower does not have a significant impact on results, but when a natural draft cooling tower is used, the flow control range is strongly reduced.

Industrial water consumption in Poland is very high and reach over 10 billion m3/year, which forces the implementation of appropriate programs and technological solutions to reduce water consumption in industrial activity. Depending on the design system, operating conditions of water-powered cooling systems, they are exposed to varying degrees of corrosion, precipitation and deposition of sediments and the growth of microorganisms in water circulating. So important are measures aimed at raising the technical level of operation of industrial water systems. One of the most promising ways to prevent negative phenomena in the operation of cooling water systems is the use of organic inhibitors of complex multi-functional system to protect against corrosion, deposition of sediments and the development of microorganisms in the water circulation.

Opis:
Although PWR reactors make up the large majority of the world's nuclear power plants, BWR reactors also have a share in this industry. It is difficult to find data on the performance of a BWR power plant in off-design and variable load conditions in the literature. Therefore, the paper presents how cooling water temperature affects the efficiency and power output of a BWR unit. The qualitative effect of changes and the trend related to the effect of cooling water temperature on the performance of the power plant are known, but the quantitative effect has to be determined for specific power units. Depending on the location of the nuclear power plant, various temperatures of cooling water for use in condensers and thus various operating conditions of the cooling system can be achieved. To analyze how cooling water temperature affects the performance of the power unit, a model of a BWR power plant was developed using the Ebsilon software. The model was based on data provided in [1] concerning LaSalle County Nuclear Generating Station. Calculations showed that within the examined range of cooling water temperatures at the condenser inlet between 10 and 28oC the gross power output of the unit decreases by 91.405 MW and the gross efficiency drops by 2.773 percentage points.

Opis:
Scaling and corrosion associated with the use of natural hard water in cooling towers during recirculation pose great problems from both economical and technical points of view, such as decreased system efficiency and increased frequency of chemical cleaning. Treated municipal wastewater (MWW) is a promising alternative to freshwater as power plant cooling system makeup water, especially in arid regions. In this work, hybrid systems of salt precipitation (SP), nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) were investigated, as potential pretreatment processes for wastewater reuse as cooling water in the planned Jordan nuclear power plants. The As-Samra wastewater was used to calculate the potential of carbonate and sulfate scale formation. The results were compared to scale potentials from Palo Verde wastewater. Four cases were investigated; SP, NF, SP-RO and NF-RO. The SP pretreatment cases showed the highest monovalent to divalent ratio because of a high removal of Ca and Mg and addition of Na from the chemicals of the SP step. The NF pretreatment cases, showed the lowest calcium sulfate scale potential and this potential decreases with the % pretreatment. The scale amount increases very slightly with concentration times when the SP and NF product is desalinated by RO step.

The electrical performance and the productivity of PV module depend on two main parameters, i.e. the radiation intensity and the cell operating temperature. The module electrical efficiency and productivity are significantly reduced as its temperature increases. Accordingly, cooling of PV modules is one of the most effective techniques to obtain higher efficiency and productivity as well as to reduce the degradation modes of PV modules due to high temperatures. This research work presents an experimental study carried out to investigate the effect of PV module cooling on the performance of PV module under Irbid city (Jordan) climate conditions. It was found that the electrical efficiency and the productivity of the PV modules were approximately enhanced by 14%. Therefore, water cooling of the PV modules is essential to enhance their performance.

This paper presents the development of a cooling apparatus using water in a commercial photovoltaic panel in order to analyze the increased efficiency through decreased operating temperature. The system enables the application of reuse water flow, at ambient temperature, on the front surface of PV panel and is composed of an inclined plane support, a perforated aluminum profile and a water gutter. A luminaire was specially developed to simulate the solar radiation over the module under test in a closed room, free from the influence of external climatic conditions, to carry out the repetition of the experiment in controlled situations. The first case study was published at EEEIC2016 conference where the panel was submitted to different rates of water flow, from 1 L/min to 4 L/min. In the test conditions without cooling apparatus, the panel reached about 70°C and produced approximately 63Wh. With the cooling apparatus with water flow rate of 2 L/min, the module reached about 50°C and produced approximately 77Wh. However, it has been observed that this water flow was overestimated. A second case study was carried out in order to perform the threshold between the flow and the energy produced. The best ratio was flow of 0.6 L/min and net energy of 77.41Wh. Gain of 22.69% compared to the panel without the cooling system. The best water flow rate was of 0.6 L/min and net energy of 77.41Wh. Gain of 22.69% compared to the panel without the cooling system.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of water trophy assessment from various stations of the cooling system of the “Dolna Odra” (Poland) power plant. The assessment was made based on the indicator phytoplankton species collected four times at four sites located in different parts of the hydrological system cooling the technical infrastructure of the power plant. The sites were characterised by water with a natural temperature for individual seasons, as well as by thermals changed as a result of the discharge of cooling waters. For each site, the saprobic index was calculated based on indicator species. The analysis showed that the changes in trophic conditions, both in waters with changed thermals and in waters not subject to the influence of after-cool waters, are not subject to significant changes. The waters of all studied sites in the analysed periods of the year should be classified according to Sladeček and Sládečková (1996) to the waters of the β–mesosaprobic zone, with a saprobic index value ranging from 1.51 to 2.50 (average S = 2.0). This zone is characterised by the course of biochemical processes under aerobic conditions, as a result of which complete oxidation of the intermediate products of decomposition of organic compounds takes place.
Wody wszystkich badanych stanowisk w analizowanych okresach roku należy zaklasyfikować wg Sladeček i Sládečková (1996) do wód strefy β–me- zosaprobowej, mających wartość indeksu saprobowości w granicach od 1,51 do 2,50 (średnio S = 2,0). Strefa ta charakteryzuje się przebiegiem procesów biochemicznych w warunkach aerobowych, w wyniku których zachodzi całkowite utlenienie pośrednich produktów rozkładu związków organicznych.

The numerical simulations of the temperature fields have been accomplished for slab casting made of a low carbon steel. The casting process of slab of 1500 mm in width and 225 mm in height has been modeled. Two types of boundary condition models of heat transfer have been employed in numerical simulations. The heat transfer coefficient in the first boundary condition model was calculated from the formula which takes into account the slab surface temperature and water flow rate in each secondary cooling zone. The second boundary condition model defines the heat transfer coefficient around each water spray nozzle. The temperature fields resulting from the average in zones water flow rate and from the nozzles arrangement have been compared. The thermal stresses and deformations resulted from such temperature field have given higher values of fracture criterion at slab corners.

2060-T8 Al-Li alloy was friction stir butt welded under natural and water cooling conditions. Microstructures and mechanical properties of the welding joints were mainly compared and discussed. By spraying water on the top surface of stir zone, the grain size was reduced, attributing to the improvement of microhardness. The maximum tensile strength under the water cooling reached 461.1 MPa. The joint fractured at the stir zone due to the thickness reduction and the joint softening. The fracture surface consisted of many dimples with various sizes, indicating the typical ductile fracture. The strategy to apply the low heat input at the welding stage and high cooling rate at the cooling stage during FSW is necessary to obtain a high-quality FSW joint.

The design of such systems require detailed analysis of propulsion system operational parameters to meet designer expectations. The paper outlines the cooled exhaust system design problems in specific application. The simplified method of evaluation of expected cooling water flow requirements has been developed. Based on marine diesel engines test bench data, the results of short analysis of cooling water demand for two different diesel engines are presented. A simplified engineering approach may be useful for assessment of exhaust gas cooling system performance in commercial application like rescue vessels wet exhaust design or exhaust gas cleaning systems.

The study determined the local and average heat transfer coefficient and the heat flux on the surface of a cylinder cooled with a water nozzle. The inverse method was used to identify the heat transfer coefficient. An objective function was defined to determine the distance between the measured and calculated temperatures. Two models describing the heat transfer coefficient on the cooled surface were considered. The first model described changes in the heat transfer coefficient as a function of the sample radius and cooling time, and the second one assumed the dependence of the heat transfer coefficient solely on time. Numerical simulations showed significant differences in the determined heat transfer coefficients depending on the adopted model of the boundary condition. The performed tests included experimental temperature measurements at selected points of the sensor, numerical simulations of temperature changes, and the inverse solution.

An eco-friendly manufacturing approach is important for the environment. Enhancing machining performances is not only required to improve product’s quality, time saving, and reduces costs; it is also contributed to the environmental protection efforts. Cooling is important aspect for obtaining this purpose. Therefore the benefits of Strong Alkaline Water (SAW) cooling method was assessed and compared with conventional wet cutting method. An experiment was performed at Nagaoka University of Technology machining centre. Three machine tools including a milling machine, a drilling machine and a turning machine were used. The study shows that using SAW for cooling is far more efficient than conventional cooling method. It reduces annual global warming potential by 72.95%, acidification potential 98.18%, ozone depletion potential 99.6%, smog formation potential 85.71% and human toxicity potential 42.86% compare with conventional method. The study concludes that besides inhibiting corrosion, prolonging tool life, improving surface roughness of final cutting and reducing energy usage, strong alkaline water cooling is an environmentally friendly approach and has positive impact on human health.

One of the rational ways of energy saving is to use the heat of wastewater from energy companies for open ground heating and cultivation crops. The most significant sources of heat are thermal and nuclear power plants that produce low-thermal waters of 28-35°C. Heating of the ground with the use of circulating warm water allows to increase temperature at all points of the soil profile. The maximum thermal effect from heating ground is observed at the depth of pipe heaters (7.3- 11.1°C). Ground heating allows to extend the growing season for crops by 3-4 weeks, which can expedite harvesting and thus maximise the harvest. In natural moisture conditions, ground heating does not lead to significant reduction of moisture reserves in the active layer throughout the growing period. There is a redistribution of moisture in a soil profile. It decreases in the zone of pipe heaters and redistributes toward the top. The formation of the nutrient regime changes, the content of mobile phosphorus and potassium, and nitrate nitrogen increases, whereas the content of ammonia nitrogen is reduced. Ground heating is a new special heat reclamation technique. It allows not only to control temperature of the agricultural crop environment, but also to dissipate heat in the ground, and promote the utilisation of waste heat and the stabilisation of the environment.

The waste warm waters from power plants, owing to their temperature regime (25–38°C) and the volumes of discharge, allow for their use for heating of open ground areas in agriculture. Underground heating by such water is a new, special heat and irrigation method which enables not only purposeful regulation of temperature conditions of the crop growing environment, but also dissipates heat in the soil, thus cooling the water for its reuse. This makes it possible to reduce the thermal pollution of water sources.
