Opis:
Carbon, hydrogen and sulphur were determined in biomass (shoots and roots) of five species of shrub willow: Salix viminalis, Salix dasyclados, Salix triandra, Salix purpurea and Salix alba. Samples of the biomass collected from a strict experiment were dried to constant weight at 105oC. The content of carbon, hydrogen and sulphur was determined in an automatic determinator ELTRA CHS 500. In addition to the chemical determinations, willow plants were assessed, in the first year of cultivation, in terms of their morphological traits and yields. The results underwent statistical analysis using Excel spreadsheets and Statistica PL software programme. An average content of carbon in the biomass of the five analysed willow species was 496.33 g⋅kg-1 d.m. Among the five species, the highest carbon content was discovered in the biomass of Salix purpurea (501.32 g⋅kg-1 d.m.). An average content of hydrogen in aerial parts of shrub willow was significantly higher than in their roots (507.95 vs 465.88 kg-1⋅d.m.). The content of hydrogen in all the species of shrub willow was on average 71.11 g⋅kg-1 d.m., with the highest hydrogen amount in biomass attributed to Salix triandra (74.98 g ⋅kg-1 d.m.). This species, on the other hand, had the lowest concentration of sulphur in its biomass (on average 0.43 g⋅kg-1 d.m.). The average content of sulphur in aerial parts was significantly lower than in roots of willow plants (0.52 vs 0.95 g⋅kg-1 d.m.). This relationship held true for all the five species of willow plants. An average yield of dry biomass obtained from the five shrub willow species in the year when the experiment was established was 5.81 Mg⋅ha-1. The highest dry biomass yield was produced by Salix viminalis (7.22 Mg⋅ha-1).

The paper concerns radio amateur satellites that are built by international student teams. For contacting a satellite, a single ground station is usually used. In this configuration and with the satellite on the low Earth orbit (LEO), teams have contact only for about 40 minutes per day. If the satellite has service for radio amateurs, they use it for 20 hours per day. A lot of them have connection to Internet. This is a big difference. In this paper, is shown how they can use the radio amateur transceivers and antenna systems in order to build ground stations network named distributed ground station system (DGSS). Frequencies, types of modulations, calculation of power budge, and the ways to control amateur stations by the Internet are also shown. These are essential procedures, because radio amateurs have their standards and habits. Finally a proposal of implementation dedicated DGSS system for radio amateurs with and without use of APRS network is put forward. Distributed ground station is one of the experiments on PW-Sat satellite, which is being build on the Warsaw University of Technology.

Self-ignition engines are currently used to drive lorries, agricultural and road construction machines, as well as passenger cars. Common Rail supply systems are widely used in such engines. Arguments for using these systems include the simple construction of a system as well as practically unlimited control of fuel feeding (division of a fuel dose into several portions), which allows for controlling the fuel combustion process. This facilitates optimisation of the combustion process in limiting toxic emissions, which is the main evaluation criterion for modern combustion engines. Operation of an engine with a Common Rail system is controlled by an Electronic Diesel Control (EDC), which is responsible not only for controlling the supply system, but also for the diagnostics of the whole engine. The diagnostic monitors embedded in the controller supervise the operation of the supply system, but also of the whole engine, including the systems responsible for reducing toxic emissions released to the atmosphere, in accordance with the European On Board Diagnostic (EOBD) standard. Unfortunately, despite sophisticated diagnostic functions, defects sometimes occur in vehicles with engines with a CR system, which are not signalled by EOBD systems. In such cases, an additional tool is needed to help a diagnostician to identify the cause of improper operation of an engine. This article presents several examples to describe the diagnostics of a Common Rail system using an analyser of diagnostic electric signals to detect the cause of such defects.

The application of photocatalytic processes for the decontamination treatment of polluted water has inspired very extensive studies. Titanium dioxide with its large band gap energy and appropriate redox potential was found as one of the most promising semiconductors for the photodegradation of pollutants in the water as well as in gas phase. The titania-silica aerogels obtained by a simple co-hydrolysis method was applied in the photodegradation of the model organic compound. Different ageing times and heat treatment temperatures were found to influence both the activity and the textural properties of the photocatalysts. The obtained aerogels are efficient photodegradation catalysts of methylene blue and allow a removal up to 98 and 78% of the model pollutant from 20 and 500 ppm solutions, respectively.

A study concerns the balance of mass and energy in the process of gasification of willow chips (acquired in 5-year rotation), as well as in the process of combustion of the gasification product with flue gas heat recovery. Thermochemical conversion of willow biomass resulted in the production of raw gas with the calorific value of 4937 kJ/kg. The product of gasification comprised a mixture of gaseous compounds, tars and water vapour. The gaseous compounds determined in the study included: hydrogen (8.30%), carbon monoxide (27.51%), methane (1.51%), carbon dioxide (3.79%), nitrogen (55.87%) and small amounts of hydrocarbons C1-C3. The ultimate production output of willow fuel was equal to 91.5 kg of chips per hour and the power output achieved 315 kW. Raw gas produced from willow biomass, mixed with air, was burnt at a temperature exceeding 1000oC and the flue gas heat was recovered in a water boiler and distributed in the central heating system. The collected thermal energy accounted for over 79% of the chemical energy of the biomass at the start of the process.

Field experiments with willow (Salix L.) coppice cultivation and Eko-Salix systems have been conducted at the University of Warmia and Mazury since 1992. In that wider context, the aim of the work described here was to compare energy inputs involved in setting up a plantation and producing biomass, and to assess the efficiency of willow-chips production under the coppice and Eko-Salix systems. The energy gain determined in the experiments was several to more than twenty times as great as the inputs needed to operate the plantation and to harvest willow biomass, this leaving both systems of willow cultivation under study attractive where setting up short-rotation coppices is concerned.

Opis:
Most of the energy today is obtained from fossil fuels, which are becoming more expensive and less available. Energy from biomass produced on agricultural land is an alternative option. Energy crops should guarantee high yield and good quality parameters, associated with their use in energy production. This study analysed the thermophysical and chemical properties of biomass obtained from 15 new clones of willow selected in the Department of Plant Breeding and Seed Production of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn. The plants were cultivated in one- and three-year rotation cycles, run in 2009-2011 at two research stations: in Bałdy and in Łężany. The energy content as well as elemental and physical properties of biomass were analysed. The higher heating value was better in biomass from one-year shoots (on average 19.66 MJ kg-1 d.m.). The highest value of this parameter was recorded for the clone of Salix acutifolia UWM 093 (20.04 MJ kg-1 d.m.). The higher heating value in biomass of three-year old clones was on average lower by 0.06 MJ kg-1 d.m. The lower heating value in biomass increased in longer willow coppice harvest cycles. The highest lower heating value was recorded for the clone UWM 035 of Salix pentandra (9.27 MJ kg-1) harvested in a three-year cycle, whereas the lowest one was achieved by the clone of Salix dasyclados UWM 155 (7.55 MJ kg-1) harvested in a one- -year cycle. The average moisture content in three-year shoots was 50.01% d.m., being higher by 2.31% in one-year shoots. The ash content was lower in biomass harvested in three-year rotation. In conclusion, willow biomass obtained in a three-year harvest cycle contains less of undesirable elements and proves to be better quality fuel than biomass obtained in a one-year harvest cycle.

Opis:
In Europe, like in other parts of the world, plant species predisposed for use as energy crops are searched for. Among the oil plants grown in European countries, rape is most important although rape oil is mainly a food product. On the other hand, Crambe abyssinica is an oil plant species which is not used to make human food or animal feeds. Besides, Crambe abyssinica oil has a high content of erucic acid, hence it has the potential to be processed into many different products in the power generation or chemical industries. This paper documents results of a field experiment conducted in north-eastern Poland, at the Experimental Station of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, located in Łężany (53°35’ N, 20°36’ E). The aim of this experiment was to determine costs of production of Crambe abyssinica grown in two variants (with and without herbicides). In addition, the quality of by-products (straw and cake) as energy feedstocks was evaluated. Costs of production of Crambe abyssinica seeds in the variant with herbicides were nearly 140€•ha-1 higher than in the variant without herbicides. The yield of pure seeds was by over 110kg•ha-1 higher in the herbicide-treated variant than in the treatment without weed control. However, the yield of straw was higher on fields without application of herbicides, but that straw had a higher moisture content due to the presence of weeds. The lower heating value of crambe straw was 15.3MJ•kg-1 on average and the straw content of ash was 5.68% D.M. The cake obtained from the crop had a much higher lower heating value (21.95MJ•kg-1) and ash content 6.41% D.M. Moreover, it was found to contain much more carbon and hydrogen, as well as five-fold more sulfur than straw.

Opis:
For decades, energy and chemical industry markets have been dominated by resources acquired from fossil fuels. The resources are steadily shrinking and access to them is becoming increasingly difficult. Therefore, alternative methods of producing fuels or chemicals from renewable sources are being sought. The crambe (Crambe abyssinica) is an oil plant with a high content of erucic acid, regarded as a feedstock for integrated biorefineries. Production of fuels or chemicals from biomass should be conducted in a sustainable way. Therefore, the aim of the study was to use the life cycle assessment method to determine the impact on the environment of the production of crambe compared to spring rape. The results showed that spring rape affected the environment more strongly in 9 out of 10 impact categories by the CML 2000 baseline method, considering the impact per 1ha. The cultivation of crambe with (Crambe II) and without herbicides (Crambe I) had the greatest impact in the category of terrestrial ecotoxicity. When an impact per 1kg of seeds was considered, it was noted that spring rape had a greater effect only in 1 out of 10 effect categories – human toxicity. The differences were associated with a much lower yield of crambe obtained in the experiment compared to spring rape. In conclusion, the environmental impact of the “weak links” in the crambe production, mineral fertilisation and a low yield, should be minimised.

BioBaler harvesting system
Opis:
Willow biomass can be collected in the form of entire or chipped shoots. The method depends on the harvest cycle of the plants, availability of necessary machines and the expected use of harvested raw material. Methods of harvesting influence on biomass quality during its acquisition and further in the storage period. Therefore, the aim of the research was to characterize the harvest of willow plantation with the use of a biobaler WB 55 and to assess the quality of the obtained biomass during the 9-month period of its storage. Willow was harvested with biobaler WB 55 in January 2010 on a commercial plantation. The 3.5 ha plantation was situated in the north-east of Poland, in the village of Dorotowo (53°42′9.88″ N 20°25′11.02″ E). An analysis of the biomass quality in terms of its thermophysical and chemical properties was carried out at the laboratory of the Department of Plant Breeding and Seed Production of the UWM in Olsztyn. Willow harvesting with a unit consisting of a 129 kW tractor and biobaler WB 55 was conducted efficiently. The average harvesting efficiency was about 18 bales per hour of the unit operation (8.75 Mg h-1 FM). The fresh matter density in the bales averaged 358.10 kg m-3 FM, whereas in dry matter it was 166.16 kg m-3 DM. With extended duration of storage, the quality of willow biomass as an energy raw material improved. The biomass in the bales steadily lost its moisture, from 53.06% in January to 17.48% in September. On the other hand, the lower heating value increased during that same period from 7.75 MJ kg-1 to 15.65 MJ kg-1. It has been found based on the observations made during the study period that the advantages of a biobaler WB 55 are the easy and efficient harvesting of plants on a plantation and bales can be used for energy production as needed.

This paper presents analyses of the thermophysical and chemical properties of eleven perennial crop species harvested in one-year rotation cycles. The crops included four species grown for biomass in the form of straw, five species producing semi-wood biomass, and two species yielding wood biomass. The research comprised three consecutive crop harvests. In each harvesting season, biomass samples for analyses were taken on six dates at one-month intervals. Thermophysical and chemical properties of the biomass were significantly differentiated within the main experimental factors and their interactions. The biomass produced by Virginia mallow had the best quality parameters as solid fuel. In fact, it achieved the lowest water content and the highest lower heating value during all of the analyzed seasons and harvest dates. The biomass of the species yielding straw or semi-wood products attained better quality as solid fuel on later harvest dates. In turn, the quality of willow biomass remained practically unchanged between the harvest dates.

Opis:
Lignocellulosic biomass is a natural, renewable and highly versatile resource. In recent years, woody biomass produced in short rotation coppices has become increasingly popular. Hence, this research was undertaken to assess the thermophysical and chemical properties of willow, poplar and black locust stems in relation to a soil fertilization regime. The experiment was set up in the village of Samławki in north-eastern Poland (53°59’ N, 21°04’ E), on soil considered sub-standard for the traditional agricultural production of food or fodder crops. The black locust biomass was characterised by the lowest moisture content combined with the greatest lower heating value and ash content. The poplar plant had the highest carbon and hydrogen content and the greatest higher heating value, although due to its high moisture content, it had the poorest lower heating value. The willow biomass was characterised by the highest content of cellulose and holocellulose. Mycorrhiza improved the cellulose content as well as the lignin and holocellulose content in the wood of the black locust. In the case of the willow wood, the applicationof lignin to the soil was the only measure that reduced the content of the ligninin the lignocellulosic biomass.

Najkorzystniejsze zmiany w zawartości celulozy, ligniny i holocelulozy w drewnie robinii miało zastosowanie mikoryzy. W przypadku drewna wierzbowego, jedynie zastosowanie ligniny do nawożenia obniżyło w niewielkim stopniu zawartość ligninyw pozyskanej dendromasie.

The mineral phase of the aragonite skeletal fibers of extant scleractinians (Favia, Goniastrea) examined with Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) consists entirely of grains ca. 50–100 nm in diameter separated from each other by spaces of a few nanometers. A similar pattern of nanograin arrangement was observed in basal calcite skeleton of extant calcareous sponges (Petrobiona) and aragonitic extant stylasterid coralla (Adelopora). Aragonite fibers of the fossil scleractinians: Neogene Paracyathus (Korytnica, Poland), Cretaceous Rennensismilia (Gosau, Austria), Trochocyathus (Black Hills, South Dakota, USA), Jurassic Isastraea (Ostromice, Poland), and unidentified Triassic tropiastraeid (Alpe di Specie, Italy) are also nanogranular, though boundaries between individual grains occasionally are not well resolved. On the other hand, in diagenetically altered coralla (fibrous skeleton beside aragonite bears distinct calcite signals) of the Triassic corals from Alakir Cay, Turkey (Pachysolenia), a typical nanogranular pattern is not recognizable. Also aragonite crystals produced synthetically in sterile environment did not exhibit a nanogranular pattern. Unexpectedly, nanograins were recognized in some crystals of sparry calcite regarded as abiotically precipitated. Our findings support the idea that nanogranular organization of calcium carbonate fibers is not, per se, evidence of their biogenic versus abiogenic origin or their aragonitic versus calcitic composition but rather, a feature of CaCO₃ formed in an aqueous solution in the presence of organic molecules that control nanograin formation. Consistent orientation of crystalographic axes of polycrystalline skeletal fibers in extant or fossil coralla, suggests that nanograins are monocrystalline and crystallographically ordered (at least after deposition). A distinctly granular versus an unresolvable pattern of nano−organization of CaCO₃ fibers seems to correspond, respectively, to an original versus a diagenetically depleted amount of organic matter bounding a mineral phase; this is consistent with qualitative and quantitative analyses of organic matter content in extant and fossil skeletons.

Opis:
Calcite isocrinid ossicles from the Middle Jurassic (Bathonian) clays in Gnaszyn (central Poland) show perfectly preserved micro− and nanostructural details typical of diagenetically unaltered echinoderm skeleton. Stereom pores are filled with ferroan calcite cements that sealed off the skeleton from diagenetic fluids and prevented structural and geochemical alteration. In contrast with high−Mg calcite skeleton of modern, tropical echinoderms, the fossil crinoid ossicles from Gnaszyn contain only 5.0–5.3 mole% of MgCO₃. This low Mg content can be a result of either a low temperature environment (ca. 10℃) and/or low Mg/Ca seawater ratio. Both conditions have been proposed for the Middle Jurassic marine environment. Occurrence of Mg−enriched central region of stereom bars of Jurassic columnal ossicle of Chariocrinus andreae is consistent with the concept of magnesium ions involvement in earliest growth phases of calcium carbonate biominerals.
