Opis:: The aim of this study was to assess the reliability of two on-site sewage treatment facilities (BCT S-12 and TJ EP-4) serving two school buildings located in rural communes in Małopolska region. The reliability was determined using Weibull reliability method. The research was conducted for 24 months and it involved the collection and analysis of 48 samples of raw and treated sewage from each facility. The analyses included organic and biogenic pollution, i.e. BOD5 , COD, and total nitrogen. Reliability assessment revealed the following effectiveness for BCT S-12 facility: 77% for BOD5 , 96% for COD and 25% for total nitrogen. For TJ EP-4 facility, the effectiveness was 81%, 88% and 72% for BOD5 , COD and total nitrogen, respectively. Both facilities used the activated sludge process and experienced periodic disturbances in the treatment flow that resulted in reduced sewage treatment efficiency. Considering the above, the processes of nitrification and denitrification in the biological reactor should be streamlined to provide more effective removal of organic and nitrogen-based compounds in the investigated facilities.

Opis:: The properties of quantum cascade laser (QCL) structures have been investigated by optical technique based on spontaneous emission measurements: photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectroscopy. Three types of test structures used for obtaining final QCL device were examined , i.e., single sequence of coupled quantum wells, which form an active region of the device, 30 sequences of this active region separated by 25 nm thick AlGaAs barriers and finally complete, undoped structure consisting of 30 of sequences repeated active regions and superlattice injectors. The results has been compared with numerical simulations. The role of such measurements has also been discussed.

Opis:: In this paper we demonstrate how the tuning of the VECSEL heterostructure can be precisely determined. Since the VECSEL active region is embodied in a microcavity, the photoluminescence signal collected from the chip surface is modified by the resonance of this cavity. The angle resolved photoluminescence measurements combined with the temperature tuning of the structure allowed us to precisely determine VECSEL emission features. The investigated structure consists of GaAs cavity with six InGaAs quantum wells and is designed for lasing at 980 nm.

Opis:: Optical properties of compressively strained In₀.₂₄Al₀.₁₉Ga₀.₅₇As layers were investigated as a function of the MBE growth conditions. The optimum temperature of the crystal surface (T_s) for MBE growth of this quaternary layer as well as the optimal cooling down process necessary for achieving appropriate T_s for InAlGaAs were experimentally found.

Opis:: Recently, an increased interest of various industrial and economy branches in geothermal waters has been observed. In Poland, one of the most famous geothermal systems is the Podhale Basin, which forms an important reservoir of geothermal waters with relatively low mineralization and high temperatures. More and more often geothermal water is used not only for balneological or recreational purposes, but also as a heat source for heating. New areas of application of geothermal waters are also appearing, e.g. the use of cooled geothermal water as a raw material to produce fresh water. Another example of the application of geothermal waters is the cosmetic industry. For instance, a cream based on geothermal water from Podhale was introduced to the cosmetics market in 2013. This paper presents the possibilities of using the geothermal waters of Podhale, with particular emphasis on geothermal waters from Banska PGP-1, Banska IG-1 and Banska PGP-3 boreholes.

Opis:: The aim of the paper was to determine the possibility of the use of Shewhart control charts to monitor changes in the forms of nitrogen, showing the quality of wastewater discharged from the wastewater treatment plant in Krosno in the years 2010-2015. The performed statistical analysis showed the highest number of cases of elevated nitrate nitrogen and/or ammonium nitrogen when the temperature of treated wastewater was below 8-9°C. This low temperature resulted in adverse effect on the activity of bacteria that were involved in biological removal of nitrogen. It was found that in the winter months, the second stage of nitrifying bacteria responsible for oxidation of nitrite to nitrate, exhibited higher activity than the denitrifying bacteria. Graphical presentation of total nitrogen content using control charts for the mean of the process revealed the exceedance of the upper specification line (USL = 10 mgN_tot·dm-3) in the months from December to April. It was observed that the total nitrogen removal process in the months from June to November was stable with a very high 90% reduction in biogenic activity. The obtained results confirm the efficacy of control charts as a tool which can easily be applied in the statistical process control of total nitrogen removal in municipal wastewater treatment plants.

Opis:: Temperature change in quantum cascade laser can be estimated by studying the device resistance change. Using this method we compared quantum cascade laser structure mounted on diamond heat spreader and without heat spreader. We have shown that the use of heat spreader reduces temperature increase even by 40%.

Opis:: Mechanism of the optical detection of cyclotron resonance via emission from 2D electron gas in modulation doped quantum wells and in high electron mobility structures of GaAs/AlGaAs is discussed based on the results of time-resolved optical detection of cyclotron resonance. An important role of impact ionization processes is demonstrated. We also show that microwave radiation destroys emission enhancement at the Fermi level and the relevant mechanism is proposed.

Opis:: This paper reports on the results of optimization of the ohmic contacts for GaAs/AlGaAs quantum cascade lasers (QCLs). Technological parameters during the optimization procedure concerned time and temperature of thermal processing as also the ratio of metallic layers thickness. The main goal of this work was to obtain stable ohmic contacts with low resistance and a smooth surface. Circular transmission line method (CTLM) was applied for the electrical characterization of the Ni/AuGe/Ni/Au and AuGe/Ni/Au metallization systems. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) method was used for the characterization of microstructures. Elements concentration in layers was determined by the energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS). The best results for the specific contacts resistivity, thermal stability and morphology were obtained when the Ni/AuGe/Ni/Au and the AuGe/Ni/Au systems were processed at 440 °C and 400 °C, respectively.

Opis:: The paper presents an analysis of sewage susceptibility to biodegradation on an example of sewage treatment plant in Wodzisław Śląski in the Śląskie province. For this purpose, dependencies between selected indices of domestic sewage pollution were applied. Descriptive statistics of the respective indices rations COD/BOD5 , BOD5 /TN, BOD5 /TPwere presented. Moreover, an analysis was conducted on the composition of raw sewage flowing into the treatment plant, pre-treated sewage and sewage leaving the studied treatment plant. The analysis was carried out on the basis of three basic indices of sewage pollution (BOD5 , COD and total suspended solids) and two biogenic indices (total nitrogen and total phosphorus). Tests on the sewage composition were conducted in the years 2010-2015. Basic descriptive statistics were compiled for the values of the studied indices of sewage pollution and the obtained results were interpreted. On the basis of collected material it may be said that sewage reaching the treatment plant in Wodzisław Śląski revealed a good susceptibility to biodegradation, whereas the BOD5 /TN and BOD5 /TP ratios were below the optimum value.
