The objective of this research was to find a more effective method for the teaching of history to Chinese students studying in South Korean universities. Questionnaire surveys and interviews were conducted to investigate those students’ level of knowledge and perceptions of Korean history. Then, in history classes, four teaching methods (comparative-historical, audiovisual, history and language, and rote memorization) were applied over two weeks. Before the treatment, Chinese students said that they liked the audiovisual teaching method the most, but after taking the classes, they preferred the teaching method comparing Korean and Chinese histories. Besides the finding that the comparative method was the most popular, the responses also showed that it was the most effective one in teaching history to Chinese students.

Opis:
Routing in Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) has found significant attention because of its unique features such as lack of energy constraints and high-speed vehicles applications. Besides, since these networks are highly dynamic, design process of routing algorithms suitable for an urban environment is extremely challenging. Appropriate algorithms could be opportunistic routing (OR) where traffic transmission is performed using the store-carry-forward mechanism. An efficient OR mechanism, called Location and Direction Aware Opportunistic Routing (LDAOR), is proposed in this paper. It is based on the best neighbor node selection by using vehicles positions, vehicles directions, and prioritization of messages from buffers, based on contact histories and positions of neighbor nodes to destination. In LDAOR, when multiple nodes make contact with a carrier node, the closest neighbor node to destination is selected as the best forwarder. However, when only one node makes contact with the carrier node, the message is delivered to it if it moves toward the destination. Using the ONE simulator, the obtained performance evaluation results show that the LDAOR operates better than conventional OR algorithms. The LDAOR not only increases delivery rate, but also reduces network overhead, traffic loss, and number of aborted messages.

The article explores the heuristic potential of gender studies and area studies (especially those concerned with Central and Eastern Europe) and appeals for a decentring of research units such as ‘general history’ and ‘Europe’ within historiography. It criticises the often mechanical use of spatial categories that ignores the fabrication of spaces by area specialists, and the reification of gender identities within women’s and gender studies. It argues for a combination of gender and area sensitive research in order to evade the juxtaposition of constructivism vs. essentialism. History of knowledge and feminist theory of science are described as useful tools for such an approach.

This article explores the interplay between knowledge and agency in early modern diplomacy. Focusing on the power dynamics of early modern empire through a case study of a Swedish embassy to the Ottoman Empire in 1657–58, the article shows how agency and knowledge interlinked throughout the diplomatic mission. At the centre of the study is Claes Rålamb, a Swedish nobleman who was sent to Istanbul to secure an alliance between Sweden and the Ottoman vassal state Transylvania. Rålamb’s journey to, and stay in, Istanbul was framed by global political developments, yet, it was also directly influenced by local customs and personal connections. In particular, Rålamb’s ability to act as an agent of the Swedish Empire was shaped by the difficulties of attaining reliable information. Moreover, the framework within which he was able to act changed between different stages of the journey. This makes the intersection between knowledge and agency a fruitful focal point for examining early modern empire, going beyond traditional national frameworks and categories of actors. Rålamb was sent out as an envoy of the Swedish empire, yet the meaning of that position changed constantly.

In recent years, historians have increasingly looked at social science data in their search for sources to study the transformation period. Researchers hope that a secondary analysis of this data will expand the existing sources. This expansion promises new perspectives, while simultaneously bringing new methodological challenges to the discipline. This article deals with both: 1. It uses a history of knowledge approach to evaluate the topics and tools of transformation research. It also argues that social scientists were not only producers of knowledge but historical actors in the restructuring of the institutions of social sciences in East Germany after 1989/90. 2. With the German Socio-Economic Panel and especially the Saxonian Longitudinal Study as an example, the article refers to the content of the studies itself – in this case, the East German school as a site of life-worlds in upheaval. It concludes that the encounter of social scientists and historians is very fruitful for historians interested in the interaction of system change and everyday life. That is, the secondary analysis of qualitative and quantitative social science data compliments ‘classical’ sources of historical research by providing insights into memories and experiences at different times in the historical process.

The paper presents results of the experimental study on the government’s remembrance policy, attitudes towards it, and the influence of remembrance narratives. It discusses individual differences of participants on three different grounds: (1) interest in history or politics, and level of historical knowledge, (2) features of cognitive motivation measured by the need for closure questionnaire: preference of order, desire for predictability, discomfort with ambiguity, closed mindedness and decisiveness, and (3) response to the presented narrative, including inspired emotions and an assessment of a story. Collected data and research observations offer an interesting and valuable insight into relationships between various factors and citizen’s support for the remembrance policy. They also lead the team to formulate three conclusions which may be used to develop theoretical understandings of this aspect of politics within political science and related disciplines.

The aim of this article is to show the methodological principles that govern the interrelationship of the main ideas, concepts, and theories of modern biology. In recent years, several prominent biological researchers attempted to offer insights into the development of biological knowledge. However, a critical examination of these attempts indicates that a methodological analysis is a more fitting approach for achieving this goal. Indeed, the challenge of establishing inter-theoretical connections between biological theories and discoveries falls not within the purview of biology itself but rather within the methodology of biology. This paper explores the key research findings that determine the vertical order of biological knowledge, thereby deepening our cognitive understanding of this field. It also explores the theoretical advancements that expand the horizontal scope of this knowledge. The conceptual framework is illustrated through two diagrams Map I and Map II, which illustrate the methodological structure of biological ideas, concepts, and theories from the era of Linnaeus to the early 21st century. Map II further demonstrates how complex explanatory narratives can be constructed based on contemporary biological and evolutionary knowledge.

This article elaborates the ways of popularising knowledge about the past of Mazovia by Museum in Płock since its establishment, as part of the Płock Scientific Society, in 1821. It had a strictly regional character. The collection consisted, on the one hand, of school teaching aids (minerals, physical and chemical equipment, globes, etc.), and on the other hand, of various exhibits donated by teachers, students, landowners, military personnel and priests, including numerous archaeological artefacts, coins, medals, natural history specimens, documents, etc. During scientific meetings, the latest archaeological and numismatic troves were reported, field inspections were organised, historical monuments were collected and placed in the museum. The institution was closed down shortly after the fall of the November Uprising. It was reactivated at the beginning of the 20th century. In December 1912, a permanent exhibition depicting the geological and historical past and the ethnography of Płock Mazovia was opened in the Gothic canonry at 8 Kanoniczny Square. In 1930, the premises were enlarged by the purchase of the House under Providence at 2 Kanoniczny Square, where the expositions of nature, geology, ethnography and archaeology were arranged. Until 1949, the facility, called the Mazovian Museum in Płock, was a part of the Płock Scientific Society. Afterwards, a new stage in its history began – a stage of independent development. The construction of a petrochemical plant in Płock in the 1960s contributed to the significant development of the facility. It obtained new premises in the renovated Castle of the Mazovian Dukes in Płock (Benedictine Abbey) on Tumskie Hill, which resulted in an increase in exhibition space and the number of specialised employees. In 1993, the Museum obtained the building of a historic granary on the Vistula embankment, where the collections of the Ethnography Department were located. In November 2004, the collections were moved from the Castle of the Mazovian Dukes to an art nouveau tenement house at 8 Tumska Street and a permanent Art Nouveau exhibition was arranged there. In the following years, the museum developed dynamically, in terms of its premises, its programme of activities, including the popularisation of historical knowledge. New museum pavilions and new permanent exhibitions were created. At present, the popularisation activity of the Mazovian Museum in Płock comprises a wide range of activities carried out by the Dissemination and Promotion Department and individual substantive departments. These include museum lessons, historical lectures, scientific sessions, workshops for children and people with disabilities, outdoor events, promotions of publications, concerts, competitions, educational films, periodicals (“Rocznik Muzeum Mazowieckiego w Płocku”, “Nasze Korzenie”, “Biuletyn Muzealny”), paratheatrical performances and many others.
W artykule omówiono sposoby popularyzacji wiedzy o przeszłości Mazowsza stosowane w Muzeum Mazowieckim w Płocku od momentu jego powstania, w ramach Towarzystwa Naukowego Płockiego, w 1821 r. Miało ono charakter stricte regionalny. Zbiory tworzyły z jednej strony szkolne pomoce naukowe (minerały, aparaty fizyczne i chemiczne, globusy etc.), z drugiej zaś – ofiarowane przez nauczycieli, uczniów, obywateli ziemskich, wojskowych i księży różnorodne eksponaty, w tym liczne zabytki archeologiczne, monety, medale, okazy przyrodnicze, dokumenty etc. Na posiedzeniach naukowych referowano najnowsze znaleziska archeologiczne i numizmatyczne, organizowano inspekcje terenowe, zbierano zabytki przeszłości i umieszczano je w muzeum. Placówka ta zamarła wkrótce po upadku Powstania Listopadowego. Do jej reaktywacji doszło na początku XX w. W grudniu 1912 r. otwarto w gotyckiej kanonii przy Rynku Kanonicznym 8 stałą ekspozycję obrazującą przeszłość geologiczną i historyczną oraz etnografię Mazowsza Płockiego. W 1930 r. baza lokalowa powiększyła się o zakupiony Dom pod Opatrznością przy Rynku Kanonicznym 2, w którym urządzono ekspozycje – przyrodniczą, geologiczną, etnograficzną, archeologiczną. Do 1949 r. placówka, nosząca nazwę Muzeum Mazowsza Płockiego, była częścią Towarzystwa Naukowego Płockiego. Po tej dacie rozpoczął się nowy etap w jej historii, etap samodzielnego rozwoju. Budowa kombinatu petrochemicznego w Płocku w latach 60. XX w. przyczyniła się do znaczącego rozwoju placówki. Uzyskała ona nową siedzibę w odrestaurowanym Zamku Książąt Mazowieckich (Opactwie Benedyktyńskim) na Wzgórzu Tumskim, co przełożyło się na powiększenie powierzchni wystawienniczej oraz wzrost liczby pracowników ze specjalistycznym wykształceniem. W 1993 r. muzeum otrzymało budynek zabytkowego spichlerza na skarpie nad Wisłą, w którym ulokowano zbiory Działu Etnografii. W listopadzie 2004 r. przeniesiono zbiory z Zamku Książąt Mazowieckich do kamienicy secesyjnej przy ul. Tumskiej 8 i urządzono tam stałą ekspozycję sztuki secesyjnej. W kolejnych latach nastąpił dynamiczny rozwój muzeum, tak pod względem bazy lokalowej, jak i programu działania na każdym praktycznie polu, także w zakresie popularyzacji wiedzy historycznej. Pojawiły się nowe pawilony muzealne i nowe ekspozycje stałe. Obecnie aktywność popularyzatorska Muzeum Mazowieckiego w Płocku obejmuje szeroką gamę działań realizowanych przez Dział Upowszechniania i Promocji oraz poszczególne działy merytoryczne. Są to lekcje muzealne, prelekcje historyczne, sesje naukowe, warsztaty dla dzieci i osób niepełnosprawnych, imprezy plenerowe, promocje wydawnictw, koncerty, konkursy, filmy edukacyjne, periodyki („Rocznik Muzeum Mazowieckiego w Płocku”, „Nasze Korzenie”, „Biuletyn Muzealny”), widowiska parateatralne i wiele innych.

The aim of the study is to show the progress of knowledge regarding the developmental and educational potential of a child in the prenatal period. The educational potential in this study is defined as human development and educational resources. The author analyzes the ways of defining a child and childhood, signals the progress of social sciences that took place at the end of the 19th and in the 20th centuries, which was of great importance for the transformation of the concept of a child and childhood with its pre-birth period. The author also reviews the assumptions of contemporary psychology and prenatal pedagogy, and encourages a discourse on human potential from the moment of conception.
Celem opracowania jest ukazanie wybranych kontekstów historii postępu wiedzy na temat potencjału edukacyjnego dziecka w okresie prenatalnym. Potencjał edukacyjny zdefiniowany został jako zasoby rozwojowe i edukacyjne człowieka. Autorka przeprowadziła analizę sposobów definiowania dziecka i dzieciństwa oraz zasygnalizowała postęp nauk społecznych, do którego doszło pod koniec XIX i w XX wieku, a który miał duże znaczenie w procesie transformacji koncepcji dziecka i dzieciństwa wraz z jego okresem przedurodzeniowym. Ponadto w artykule znajduje się przegląd głównych założeń współczesnej psychologii i pedagogiki prenatalnej, zachęcający do dyskursu nad edukacyjnym potencjałem człowieka od momentu jego poczęcia.

This paper describes the popularization of the Italian pedagogical thought in Polish textbooks about the history of education in general. It has shown that the authors of the textbooks gave a lot of information about the Italian school system and education and presented profiles of outstanding Italian educationalists, e.g. St John Bosco or Maria Montessori. This paper indicates that in the past centuries Poles were open to Italian intellectual currents, academic trips to the Italian Peninsula, and education at local universities. Polish textbooks about the history of education were popular (in the 20th c.) and still are an important source of knowledge about the history of Italian education. For the purposes of this paper, the contents of the most representative and popular textbooks have been analysed.

Toponyms of the East African coast present a recorded illustration of the multicultural environment of the Indian Ocean in its western part. A number of historical locations have been identified on the basis of modern or archaeological evidence corresponding to place names found in the written sources ranging from Antiquity to the contemporary era. From the Horn of Africa to the Swahili coast to Mozambique, the East African coast has been marked by a certain geographical stability of urban centres and port locations. Some of the modern cities still carry the names first recorded in the 10th century C.E., while some medieval toponyms may be correlated to locations first listed in ancient Greek sources. The present paper will examine two examples from the extensive toponymical record for the East African coast. The major cultural traditions related to the place names and their recorded history in the written sources of the past centuries are generally known. Medieval Arabic sources provide the bulk of written information about the region in the pre-Portuguese era. The paper acknowledges some differences between the evidence of academic Islamic geography and the information provided by Arab travellers and navigators. The sources reveal a degree of stability in the inventory of the recorded place names despite the historical changes on the coast. Analysis reveals a complex picture of historical and language-based patterns of knowledge transmission in the trans-cultural oceanic environment.

The purpose of this article is to use North Norwegian legends and show how these oral stories have been used in the education at the Institute for Teacher Education and Pedagogic, University of Tromsø - Norway’s arctic university since the time I started this project at the end of the 1990s period. Here, there will be given a definition and expansion for the types of legends that exists, what was stated about it in the lecture plan (L97) at the time, and what created the basis for this research. An important part of this work was to collect legends in order to document this traditional material for later, as a contribution to North Norwegian cultural history and, thereby, as a gateway to establish knowledge structures.
