Challenging job demands are those which require the use of high energy and thus may impair health but bring positive consequences too. The present study aimed to construct a measure for challenging job demands for university teachers. Methods: The study is based upon the model developed by Makhdoom and Malik (2018) which proposed three challenging job demands including Regulatory Load, Social Load, and Cognitive Demands. On the basis of the literature review, Time Pressure was also studied as a factor. First of all, the authors created an initial item pool of 19 items which were categorized into four factors. The finalized item pool was administered on two independent samples drawn from various universities of Pakistan. In the first stage, the university teachers (N = 201) from three universities of the Punjab province were approached. EFA concluded three-factor and 13 items, which were then administered upon a sample of university teachers (N = 600). Results: The CFA confirmed the three-factor structure of challenging job demands including Time Pressure, Cognitive Demands and Social Load. All the fit indices were within an acceptable range. The values of factor loadings and Cronbach Alpha justified the internal consistency and psychometric soundness of the newly developed measure. Discussion: The study concludes a psychometrically sound scale to measure challenging job demands in university teachers which will be helpful in future studies. The limitations of the study along with suggestions for future research and important theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Objectives The aim of the study was to investigate the direct and indirect – mediated by job burnout – effects of job demands on mental and physical health problems. The Job Demands–Resources model was the theoretical framework of the study. Three job demands were taken into account – interpersonal conflicts at work, organizational constraints and workload. Indicators of mental and physical health problems included depression and physical symptoms, respectively. Material and Methods Three hundred and sixteen Polish teachers from 8 schools participated in the study. The hypotheses were tested with the use of tools measuring job demands (Interpersonal Conflicts at Work, Organizational Constraints, Quantitative Workload), job burnout (the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory), depression (the Beck Hopelessness Scale), and physical symptoms (the Physical Symptoms Inventory). The regression analysis with bootstrapping, using the PROCESS macros of Hayes was applied. Results The results support the hypotheses partially. The indirect effect and to some extent the direct effect of job demands turned out to be statistically important. The negative impact of 3 job demands on mental (hypothesis 1 – H1) and physical (hypothesis 2 – H2) health were mediated by the increasing job burnout. Only organizational constraints were directly associated with mental (and not physical) health. Conclusions The results partially support the notion of the Job Demands-Resources model and provide further insight into processes leading to the low well-being of teachers in the workplace.

Objectives: The aim of this two-wave study has been to test the spillover and crossover of job and family demands on changes in perceived stress at work and in the family. Specifically, we proposed that demands from one domain (work or family) spilled over to another domain through interrrole conflict (work–family/family–work conflict) and context-specific self-efficacy. Additionally, we hypothesized that changes in perceived stress were impacted not only by a person’s own demands through interrole conflict but also by the demands of one’s significant other, in the process of crossover. Material and Methods: The study was of dyadic design and it was conducted online, among 130 heterosexual couples, at 2 time points separated by 3 months interval. Hypotheses were verified by means of the path analysis. Results: No support was found for the spillover of job and family demands on changes in perceived stress through interrole conflict and self-efficacy, neither for women nor for men. With regard to the crossover, no support was found for the actor effects, i.e., a person’s demands did not impact changes in one’s own work- and family-related perceived stress but partial support was found for the partner effects, i.e., women’s job demands were associated with men’s changes in work and family-related stress through women’s work–family conflict, and men’s family demands were associated with women’s change in family-related perceived stress through men’s family–work conflict. Conclusions: The study is a longitudinal test of the Spillover–Crossover model and Work–Home Resources model demonstrating that job and family demands are transmitted across domains and across partners in the intimate relationships through the interrole conflict but the nature of this crossover is different for men and women. The study was aimed at investigation 1) effect of job and family demands on job and marital satisfaction, 2) mediating role of work-family and family-work conflicts and differences between women and men in regards to work the conflicts and job and marital satisfaction. Participants were 281 workers represented different type of occupation. The result support researching hypothesis partly. High work and family demands correlated with low job and marital satisfaction. Moreover work-family conflict mediated effect of job demands on job satisfaction. Family-work conflict did not play role of mediator. Men were characterized by lower family-work conflict and lower marital satisfaction than women. There were not sex differences related to work-family conflict and job satisfaction.

In the report there is discussed the problem of changing demands in the binding rules concerning the technical conditions. During maintenance, the lack of information from the surrounding of the vehicle is one of the reasons of collisions and accidents. There is a radical limitation of unobstructed observation of the whole area surrounding trucks of N1 category in comparison to the car of M1 category. Vehicles which have the same body and which are designed to transport people - M1 category or load – N1 category, they have different equipment, such as side glazing and back walls. Those who are driving these vehicles do not have comparable and identical visibility. The open loadcarrying body in the truck creates the screen obscuring of the big part of the vehicle's surrounding which precludes the direct observation of the considerable area. The devices of the indirect visibility enable to observe only the part of the area, which is directly invisible. There is an important need to change the regulation as far as construction and vehicles equipment is concerned. This paper offers the change of the philosophy of the regulations requirements in the area of visibility. Technical progress and development in the area of visual transfer devices helps to use them in the vehicles in order to improve the possibility of observing the surrounding of the vehicle. There is no reason to tolerate the worse visual transfer in the vehicles N1 category.

The Job Demands-Resources Theory (JD-R) is a heuristic theory that explains the work engagement and exhaustion by job resources and job demands interaction. The purpose of this article is to use the JD-R as a theoretical framework of work engagement management concept. In the first part of the article the concept of work engagement is presented. The second section explains the theoretical assumption of JD-R. In the third part, the concept of work engagement management is introduced. Work engagement management concept integrates planning, measurement and active modification of job resources and demands, which should lead to the development of work engagement among employees. The conclusion sets out the possible consequences of theoretical and practical application of the proposed concept and points up its limitations.

Objective: Job rewards have both, an intrinsic and an extrinsic motivational potential, and lead to employees' development as well as help them to achieve work goals. Rewards can balance job demands and protect from burnout. Due to changes on the labour market, new studies are needed. The aim of our study was to examine the role of demands and individual rewards (and their absence) in burnout among surgical nurses. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted in 2009 and 2010 with 263 nurses who worked in surgical wards and clinics in hospitals in Southern Poland. The hypotheses were tested by the use of measures of demands and rewards (Effort-Reward Imbalance Questionnaire by Siegrist) and burnout syndrome (Maslach Burnout Inventory). A cross-sectional, correlational study design was applied. Results: Nurses experienced the largest deficiencies in salary and prestige. Exhaustion was explained by stronger demands and lack of respect (large effect). Depersonalization was explained by stronger demands, lack of respect and greater job security (medium effect). Reduced personal achievement was explained by more demands and greater job security (small effect). Conclusions: Excessive demands and lack of esteem are key reasons for burnout among surgical nurses. Job security can increase burnout when too many resources are invested and career opportunities do not appear. These results may help to improve human resource management in the healthcare sector.

This study examined the effectiveness of implicit and explicit learning methods on the acquisition and retention of the decision-making skill in low and high complexity situations. 60 novice students were divided into explicit, implicit, and control group. Experimental groups followed 12 training courses. A pre-test, a post-test, and a retention test were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the instructional methods. All participants were evaluated in decision-making speed and accuracy in laboratory tests under simulated conditions. A three-way factorial ANOVA was conducted (3 Group X 2 Complexity X 3 Measurement periods) with repeated measurements on the last factor for the accuracy and reaction time. The analysis showed a significant improvement in decision-making accuracy, in low complexity for both experimental groups. In high complexity situations, the explicit method improved over time and was better than the implicit for decision accuracy. No differences were found among groups or measurements for the decision speed in either low or high complexity situations. It seems that in complex sport conditions, the use of explicit learning helps novices to develop decision-making accuracy more than the implicit learning method, since guided discovery may guide the participants to process contextual information from the sports environment more effectively.

The first part of this article introduces the work engagement concept in a framework of the Job Demands-Resources Theory and discusses a relation between work engagement and job crafting. Next, the author presents the hypothesis that university education can form engaged employees by enhancing students’ self-efficacy beliefs about their ability to effectively crafting their future job environments. On the basis of the Social Learning Theory the author proposed three possible methods on how the university community could promote job crafting behaviors among students. These methods are: trainings and persuasions, modeling, or observation of how university top researchers work, and allowing students to experience success in changing different aspects of the university environment.

What did Søren Kierkegaard think on Martin Luther? In some cases he treated to the German reformer positively, but simultaneously very often severily criticized him. Generally speaking, relationship of Journals author to Martin Luther was complicated and ambiguous. Kierkegaard strived to the amendment of contemporary Danish Lutheranism, which was burdened by Luther’s doctrinal errors, and also deteriorated by later generations of Lutherans. Danish thinker accused Luther of considerable reducing of ethical Christian demands by means of moral act values depreciation, abolition of clergyman celibacy and dissolution of monastery life, rejection of ascetic practices like voluntary poverty, fastings, renunces and intensive contemplative life, connection of religious doctrine and cult with real politics. It was main reason for secularization of contemporary to Kierkegaard Danish Christianity. Over the course of time with Kierkegaard the immanent criticism of Lutheranism turned into some kind of external one. Luther’s doctrine was not sufficient for him. He disclosed essential lacks. Hence in spite of clear declarations of remaining at the national faith, he leaned more and more towards Catholicism. Kierkegaard discovered, Protestantism was only “corrective remedy” to Catholicism, but from the beginning the its existence was dependent on the Catholic Church. Hence, Danish thinker was rather protagonist to shape contemporary Protestantism according to catholic patterns than to reform Catholicism according to protestant rules. The main aim of his article is to indicate the whole estimation range of the Luther and Lutheranism, we find in Søren Kierkegaard’s Journals. Furthermore, we do not decide anything about theological rightness or unjustness of Danish thinker criticism directed to German reformer Martin Luther.
Co sądził Søren Kierkegaard o Marcinie Lutrze? W wielu przypadkach odnosił się do niego pozytywnie, ale nie szczędził też Lutrowi krytycznych uwag. Ogólnie mówiąc, stosunek autora Dziennika do Marcina Lutra był złożony i wieloznaczny. Dążył do naprawy luteranizmu, obciążonego doktrynalnymi błędami Lutra, ale także zepsutego przez pokolenia późniejsze, które odeszły od pierwotnego wyznania luterańskiego. Zarzucał Lutrowi znaczne obniżenie etycznych wymagań chrześcijańskich poprzez deprecjację wartości uczynków, zniesienie celibatu duchownych, rozwiązanie klasztorów, utrącenie praktyk ascetycznych (postów, wyrzeczeń, dobrowolnego ubóstwa), likwidację intensywnego życia kontemplacyjnego, połączenia doktryny i kultu religijnego z realną polityką. Z tego powodu współczesne Kierkegaardowi chrześcijaństwo duńskie uległo znacznemu zeświecczeniu. U Kierkegaarda z biegiem czasu immanentna krytyka luteranizmu przerodziła się w krytykę zewnętrzną. Nie wystarczała mu już nauka Lutra i luteranizm. Odkrył w nich istotne braki. Stąd mimo wyraźnych deklaracji pozostania przy wyznaniu narodowym, coraz bardziej skłaniał się ku katolicyzmowi. Kierkegaard odkrył, że protestantyzm jest zaledwie „środkiem korygującym” katolicyzm. Istnienie protestantyzmu od samego początku było zależne od istnienia Kościoła katolickiego. Stąd był raczej zwolennikiem kształtowania współczesnego protestantyzmu wedle wzorców katolickich niż reformowania katolicyzmu na modłę protestancką. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest pokazanie całej palety ocen Lutra i luteranizmu, z jakimi spotykamy się w pisanym przez całe dorosłe życie Dzienniku Sørena Kierkegaarda. Niczego nie rozstrzygamy na temat teologicznej słuszności lub niesłuszności krytyki Duńczyka pod adresem Lutra.

The deep changes in Polish legal system and economy that took place after 1989 contributed to the emergence of new challenges for public administration. The legislator, in order to satisfy growing numbers of social demands, appointed new tasks and created a new legal form of action for public administration entities. However, not every of the new forms were fitted to classically understood administrative law. Part of this new forms at the same time combines some features characteristic for administrative law as well as typical for civil law, which gives them untypical (hybrid) character. As an example, there can be mentioned: civil law contracts with so called “overlays” (obligatory additional conditions) imposed by certain legal acts as well as administrative settlements and administrative contracts. The aim of this article is to analyze those hybrid forms of action of public administration entities in terms of implementation the objectives of regulation set by the legislator.

Objectives Most research on the negative impact of restructuring on employees’ health considers restructuring involving personnel reduction. The aim of this study was to explore the assumption that the type of restructuring, business expansion versus restructuring not involving expansion (only reductions and/or change of ownership), influences its psychological responses: appraisal of the change, psychosocial working conditions and well-being after the change. Material and Methods The study was carried out among 857 employees that experienced restructuring in 2009 and/or 2010 and 538 employees from companies not restructured at that time. The main variables, i.e., assessment of change in terms of personal benefits and losses, psychosocial job characteristics and well-being were measured using a questionnaire developed in “The psychological health and well-being in restructuring: key effects and mechanisms” project (PSYRES). Results It was found that the employees who experienced business expansion in comparison to those who experienced exclusively change of ownership had a higher appraisal of change, while those who experienced restructuring not involving business expansion did not differ from those who experienced change of ownership. As far as psychosocial working conditions are concerned, those employees who experienced exclusively business expansion did not differ from those in the not restructured companies (except for quantitative demands that were higher), while most psychosocial working conditions of the employees who experienced restructuring not involving expansion were poorer than in the not restructured companies. Also, well-being measures of the employees who experienced exclusively business expansion did not differ from those in the not restructured companies (except for innovative behavior that was even higher), while well-being measure of those who experienced restructuring not involving expansion was poorer than of those in the not restructured companies. Conclusions Restructuring involving exclusively business expansion is not a threat to psychosocial job characteristics (except for quantitative demands) or to employees’ well-being. Therefore, the type of restructuring should be taken into account when the restructuring – psychological health relationship is discussed.

Large rivers have played and continue to play a highly significant role in the development of societies and countries. The specific nature of the Oder River in the past was determined by the variability of state affiliations and the functions assigned to it. In the competition for dominion over the entire course of the river or over selected sections of it, Czech, Polish, German and Scandinavian influences clashed at different times. Today, a new definition of the role played by the Oder in the context of an increasingly integrated Europe and the evolution of the relevance of national borders is urgently needed. Previous research in this area is seriously inadequate. Studies written in German, as well as in Polish academic circles, should be considered factually incomplete and methodologically outdated. The authors propose a new program of research on the history, present day and prospects for the development of the Oder and the Oder River region. Their starting point should be detailed archival searches conducted in Poland and Germany, as well as an analysis of contemporary concepts of river use for the nations and communities along the Oder River. The article contains the main tenets of such research and its concept.
Duże rzeki odgrywały i nadal odgrywają bardzo istotną rolę w rozwoju społeczeństw i państw. O specyfice Odry w przeszłości decydowała zmienność przynależności państwowej i funkcji, jakie jej wyznaczano. W rywalizacji o panowanie nad całym biegiem rzeki lub nad wybranymi jej odcinkami w różnych okresach ścierały się wpływy czeskie, polskie, niemieckie i skandynawskie. Współcześnie pilną potrzebą jest nowe zdefiniowanie roli Odry w warunkach integrującej się Europy i ewolucji znaczenia granic państwowych. Dotychczasowe badania w tym zakresie są dalece niewystarczające. Opracowania powstałe zarówno w niemieckim, jak i w polskim środowisku naukowym należy uznać za nie- pełne merytorycznie i przestarzałe metodologicznie. W związku z tym autorzy proponują nowy program studiów nad dziejami, współczesnością i perspektywami rozwoju Odry i Nadodrza. Bazą tych badań powinny być szczegółowe kwerendy archiwalne prowadzone w Polsce i w Niemczech oraz analiza współczesnych koncepcji wykorzystania rzeki dla nadodrzańskich państw i społeczeństw. W artykule zawarto główne tezy takich badań oraz ich koncepcję.

W artykule opisano założenia i konstrukcję modelu transportowego opracowanego na potrzeby studium transportowego Bydgosko-Toruńskiego Obszaru Partnerstwa (B-TOP) [1], w którym zintegrowano dwa niezależne modele miejskie, uwzględniono obszary podmiejskie, wiejskie oraz wzajemne powiązania pomiędzy obu sąsiedzkimi miastami. W modelu odtworzono wszystkie formy transportu, w tym m.in. ruch pieszy, rowerowy oraz środkami transportu publicznego kolejowego, tramwajowego i autobusowego. Model ten został zastosowany do diagnozy funkcjonowania transportu w analizowanym obszarze, analizy SWOT oraz opracowania modeli prognostycznych dla różnych scenariuszy rozwoju gospodarczego analizowanego obszaru. Modele te zostały z powodzeniem zastosowane do opracowania koncepcji rozwoju systemów transportowych B-TOP.
The article presents assumptions and construction of transportation model developed for the transport study of the Bydgoszcz- Torun Area Partnership (B-TOP), which integrates two independent models of urban areas, suburban and rural areas and the interrelationship between the two neighboring cities. The model renders all forms of transport, including pedestrian, bicycle and public transport (railway transport, trams and buses). This model was used to diagnose the functioning of transport in the analyzed area, the SWOT analysis and the development of predictive models for different scenarios of economic development of the analyzed area. These models have been successfully applied to develop the concept of transport systems development B -TOP.
