Bubble Coalescence Time Measurement
Opis:
An efficiency of flotation process is strongly dependent upon the collecting ability of air bubbles. On the other hand, the liquid film formed beetween two fully or partially mobile air/liquid interfaces being in contact has low stability, which leads to fast liquid drainage. Therefore, when they approach to each other, they tend to coalescence. Therefore, bubble coalescence is usually controlled with frothers in flotation process. Meanwhile, it is known that dissolved ions inhibit bubble coalescence. In this study, the bubble coalescence in the presence of MIBC was determined using a novel technique with a modified bubble-particle attachment timer. Additionally, the effect of NaCl and CaCl2 on bubble behavior was investigated along with surface tension and bubble coalescence time aspects. As a result of study, it is seen that the bubble coalescence time can be successfully determined with a bubble-bubble coalescence timer.

Opis:
Flotation of soluble salts such as borax, potash, and trona is carried out in their saturated solutions. The high ion concentration of the flotation suspension can affect the floatability of the minerals as well as the coalescence behaviors of the bubbles. The bubble coalescence can be inhibited in the presence of dissolved ions at high ion concentrations as well as with the use of surfactants. In this study, the effect of the mixtures of KCl, NaCl, and dodecyl amine hydrochloride (DAH) on air/water interface was investigated with surface tension and bubble coalescence time measurements for potash flotation. The surface tension measurements indicated that lower surface tension values obtained with mixed KCl and NaCl solutions than their single solutions. In addition, the surface tension of the mixed KCl and NaCl solutions increased with the NaCl and the ionic strength of the solution. The dynamic surface tension measurements indicated that while ion adsorption on air/water interface was so fast, DAH molecules required more time for adsorption probably related to the viscosity of the solution. In addition, the bubble coalescence time measurements showed that the bubble coalescence could be inhibited with the use of DAH in the absence and presence of KCl and NaCl. In the absence of DAH, the bubble coalescence time was determined as 100 ms, 270 ms, and 650 ms, respectively for 100% KCl, 100% NaCl, and 50%KCl+50% NaCl salt solutions. Therefore, the trend in the success of the salt solutions for the inhibition of bubble coalescence can be written as 100%KCl<50%KCl+50%NaCl<100% NaCl according to the bubble coalescence time. The results of this study indicated that there was no clear relationship between the surface tension and the inhibition of the bubble coalescence. However, the bubble coalescence time measurements showed that while the bubble coalescence time was 650 ms in the presence of Na+ ions, it was 100 ms in the presence of K+ ions 100 ms. It can be concluded from the results obtained from this study that the bubble coalescence phenomena may be managed by the specific ion pairing types in solutions which significantly affect the flotation recovery of minerals.

Opis:
The main purpose of the froth zone in flotation is to transport all the valuable particles from the pulp zone into the concentrate. However, in practice, a complete recovery of these particles is rarely achieved since some of them are detachment from the bubbles and return to the pulp zone. While this is an important topic in the mineral flotation industry, the previously published papers are mainly limited to small laboratory scales. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effect of two main flotation variables (air flowrate and froth depth) on the flotation of iron ore in a 10 m3 industrial scale cell. It was found that, when the air flowrate increased from 45 to 146 m3/h, the velocity of the bubble coalescence also increased. In addition, when the froth depth increased from 5 to 30 cm, the product grade showed on average 2 unit increase (for instance, from 12% to 14%) due to the detachment of particles and liquid drainage. It was also found that the flotation concentrates recovery decreased with the increasing froth depth and air flowrate.

Opis:
This work presents results of an experimental study of the influence of the approach velocity on the coalescence of bubbles in aqueous solutions of n-octanol and α-terpineol. Experiments were performed in a coalescence cell allowing synchronized growth of a pair of bubbles in a liquid. High speed camera imaging was used to characterize the growth of bubbles and their interaction in aqueous solution of different concentrations of surfactants. The coalescence efficiency and contact time till coalescence were determined as a function of the approach velocity between bubbles and the concentration of surfactant. It was found that, for both surfactants, when the approach velocity between bubbles was higher than ~1 mm/s, the coalescence efficiency was independent of the approach velocity and that the contact time was independent of the concentration of surfactant. Below ~1 mm/s, both the coalescence efficiency and the contact time were the function of surfactant concentration. For the higher velocities, the suppression of coalescence occurred at concentrations similar to the concentration of immobilization of the surface of free rising bubbles.

Opis:
In this work a novel cyclonic-static micro bubble flotation column, using hydraulic separator with a conventional flotation column, was developed to separate oil droplets from emulsions. The system integrated the cyclonic and laminar flow coalescence with the pipe flow coalescence. The effect of process parameters such as circulation pressure, aeration rate, feed volumetric flow rate and viscosity of fluid on the efficiency of multi-flow pattern coalescence was investigated. The obtained results indicated that the coalescence efficiency increased with the circulation pressure, feed volumetric flow rate and aeration rate, whereas an increase in viscosity of fluid reduced the extent of coalescence. Besides, the size distribution of oil droplets in the cyclonic separator, pipe flow section and column flotation section were simulated in the flotation column using a special software. The simulation was compared with experimental data on the mean size of oil droplets.

Opis:
This paper studies the effect of the type and concentration of selected frothers and collectors mix system on the bubble sizes (Sauter mean diameter, SMD) of bubbling flow produced in a micro flotation cell and the determination of bubble size distribution (BSD). The usage of dodecyl amine hydrochloride (DAH) collector on the critical coalescence concentration of commercial frothers PPG200, PPG400, and PPG600 was investigated in detail. The results of these studies showed that the usage of DAH decreased the CCC of these frothers. Each frother + collector mixing system exhibited its unique ability in preventing coalescence of the bubbles in the order of PPG200 < PPG400 < PPG600. The factorial experiments established that the type of the frother, collector, and their concentration had a major effect on the size of the bubbles. The BSD in the presence of PPG600 + DAH mix system resulted in a little bit wider BSD which indicated the effect of frother type in mixed systems.
