The word “culture” refers to everything, “whereby man develops and perfects his many bodily and spiritual qualities; he strives by his knowledge and his labour, to bring the world itself under his control. He renders social life more human both in the family and the civic community, through improvement of customs and institutions. Throughout the course of time he expresses, communicates and conserves in his works, great spiritual experiences and desires, that they might be of advantage to the progress of many, even of the whole human family” (Gaudium et spes No. 53). The Gospel, which assumes the shape of a culture from the beginning, wants to penetrate the culture of today as well. By its nature, it creates such a culture that helps people to reach their full personal development and thus enables them to live peacefully in the community. In the evangelization of cultures, the laity plays a special role. The Church calls upon Catholics “to be present, as signs of courage and intellectual creativity, in the privileged places of culture, that is, the world of education-school and university-in places of scientific and technological research, the areas of artistic creativity and work in the humanities” (Christifideles laici No. 44). It depends on their involvement in the proclamation of Christ and his message of salvation whether people are aware of their dignity and as free beings create spaces where any human person can find the true meaning of life. The Christian laity should be present on “the contemporary Aeropagus” in order to show the people the Divine truth, goodness and beauty which were revealed in the Savior Christ Jesus in full glory. The lay faithful have the task to put into practice their personal charisma and to work in union with the Pastors of the Church.

Artykuł podejmuje zagadnienie relacji między kulturą a wiarą, która wyraża się, między innymi, w specyficznej formie doświadczenia duchowego. Punktem wyjścia dla tej refleksji jest lektura posynodalnej adhortacji Querida Amazonia w kluczu trzech pojęć: inkulturacja, duchowość, świętość. Znajdujemy je przede wszystkim w czwartym rozdziale dokumentu, opisującym – po społecznym, kulturowym i ekologicznym –marzenie kościelne. Przekraczając granice terytorium Amazonii, papieskie wezwanie do rozeznawania nowych dróg świętości, odpowiadających specyfice obecnego czasu oraz różnorodnych kontekstów kultury lokalnej, dotyka całego Kościoła.
The article deals with the issue of the relationship between culture and faith, which is expressed, inter alia, in a specific form of spiritual experience. The starting point for this reflection is the post-synodal exhortation Querida Amazonia in the key of three concepts: inculturation, spirituality, and holiness. We find them primarily in the fourth chapter of the document, describing - along with the social, cultural and environmental - the church dream. Crossing the borders of the Amazon territory, the papal call to discern new paths of holiness, corresponding to the specificity of the present time and to the diverse contexts of local culture, touches the entire Church.

Niniejszy tekst przedstawia ujęte z perspektywy misjologicznej uwarunkowania wyboru słowa na określenie Boga w języku malgaskim. Chodzi o relację pomiędzy pojęciami Andriamanitra oraz Zanahary. Historycznie rzecz ujmując, najpierw stosowano termin Zanahary, później dominowało pojęcie Andriamanitra, które przyjęło się w tekstach liturgicznych. Dziś ponownie stosuje się termin Zanahary, również w tekstach modlitw chrześcijańskich. Zasadnicze pytanie brzmi: czy do tekstów liturgicznych należy wprowadzać pojęcia języków/dialektów poszczególnych grup etnicznych, czy też powszechnie stosować terminologię oficjalnego języka malgaskiego. W prezentowanej analizie na tło historyczne (rywalizacja plemienna, okres kolonialny) nakłada się odniesienie do teologii scholastycznej oraz do współczesnych teorii translatorskich. Analizowany przykład dowodzi, że wybór terminologii nie może być arbitralnie narzucony, zaś dawne pojęcia mogą przyjąć nowe znaczenie.
From the missiological perspective this text shows the determinants of the choice of the word determining God in Malagasy. It is about the relationship between the concepts of Andriamanitra and Zanahary. Historically, the term Zanahary was used first, then the term Andriamanitra, which was adopted in liturgical texts, dominated. Today the term Zanahary is used again also in the texts of Christian prayers. The main question is whether the notions of languages/dialects of individual ethnic groups should be introduced into liturgical texts or the terminology of the official Malagasy language should be widely used. In the presented analysis, the historical background (tribal rivalry, colonial period) overlaps with a reference to scholastic theology and contemporary translation theories. The analyzed example proves that the choice of terminology cannot be imposed arbitrarily, and old concepts can assume new meanings.

Niniejszy tekst poświęcony kolędom w kulturze polskiej stanowi próbę krótkiej analizy wpływu tych szczególnych wytworów kultury na kształtowanie się zwyczajów związanych ze świętowaniem Bożego Narodzenia, a przez to na budowanie kultury narodowej. Kolęda jako muzyczny utwór religijny już sama w sobie stanowi wyraz przenikania się religii i sztuki. Dodatkowo jednak często przywodzi na myśl skojarzenie ze sztuką ludową, bliską człowiekowi, co podkreśla jeszcze jej szczególny wymiar jednoczący — tak w rodzinie, jak i we wspólnocie narodowej. W Polsce kultura, szczególnie ludowa, kształtowana była przede wszystkim przez religijność chrześcijańską, stąd też jej wpływ na rozwój tożsamości i odrębności narodowej jest bardzo znaczny. Ponadto pokazany został wpływ odwrotny, tj. w jaki sposób konkretna sytuacja polityczno-historyczna Polski oddziaływała na powstające w danych okresach nowe kolędy i jednocześnie w nich miała swoje odzwierciedlenie. W tekście przedstawione zostały jedynie wybrane przykłady kolęd, które obrazują przenikanie się religii i kultury, a także podkreślają kształtowanie przez kolędy postawy patriotycznej.
The paper on carol in Polish culture is an attempt at a brief analysis of the influence of these particular cultural products on the development of the customs associated with Christmas celebrations and the building of national culture. Carol as a musical religious piece shows the penetration of religion and art. In addition, it is often associated with folk art, close to man. It also highlights its unique dimension of unity—in the family and in the national community. In Poland, especially folk culture, it was shaped primarily by Christian religiosity, and its influence on the development of identity and national identity is very significant. In addition, the opposite was shown—how the specific political and historical situation of Poland influenced the new Christmas carols created in specific periods and at the same time reflected in them. Only selected examples of carols were presented in the paper, which illustrate the interpenetration of religion and culture and also highlight the formation of attitude of patriotism by carol.

Głoszenie słowa Bożego dokonuje się zawsze w określonym kontekście kulturowym. Kultura zaś jest systemem znaczeń wyrażanych w symbolach. Jest ona dziełem człowieka, który jako istota symboliczna tworzy i interpretuje symbole. Człowiek jest też istotą społeczną, wraz z innymi tworzy społeczność lokalną. W niej przeżywa swoją codzienność, na którą składają się także nabożeństwa religijne i słuchanie słowa Bożego. Jednym ze współczłonków społeczności lokalnej jest kaznodzieja – duszpasterz. Aby jak najlepiej dostosować Dobrą Nowinę do swych słuchaczy powinien poznawać ich kulturę. Pomocą w tym przedsięwzięciu służą kaznodziei takie teksty kulturowe, jak: lokalne opowiadania; materiały archiwalne; dane demograficzne; architektura i sztuka wizualna; rytuały; wydarzenia i aktywności typowe dla wspólnoty; a także rozmowy z osobami uznawanymi za autorytety. Analiza i interpretacja tych tekstów kulturowych może pomóc kaznodziei w inkulturacji Ewangelii.
The proclamation of God's word always takes place in a specific cultural context. Culture is a system of meanings expressed in symbols. It is the work of a man who, as a symbolic being, creates and interprets symbols. Man is also a social being, together with others he creates a local community. In it, he experiences his everyday life, which also includes religious services and listening to the word of God. One of the members of the local community is a preacher − a priest. In order to best adapt the Good News to the listeners, he should learn about their culture. The preachers are helped by such cultural texts as: local stories; archival materials; demographic data; architecture and visual art; rituals; events and activities typical of the community; as well as conversations with people considered to be authorities. Analyzing and interpreting these cultural texts can help the preacher to inculturate the Gospel.

Autor w swoim eseju analizuje zadanie inkulturacji i jej rolę w przeciwstawianiu wszelkich objawów dyskryminacji. Teologiczną podstawą inkulturacji jest tajemnica Wcieleniem.
This paper delves into cultural dynamics in spiritual, social and material aspects of the human person in his/her existential situation. Culture is anthropological element in theology. It has to do with the intellectual character of theology. Culture's intelligibility makes it belong to the entire intellectual enterprise of humankind. Indeed, culture is intrinsically linked with sustainable development whose functions include educating and socializing of young members to enable them to graduate into mature adults, among other issues. The paper delineates inculturation and approaches from scholarly writings coming from Catholic higher institutions in Africa. The essay explores the mission of inculturation and how it can counteract forces of discrimination of any kind and dehumanization of the human person. The theological basis of inculturation is the incarnational principle.

In Manggarai region, on the Flores island (Indonesia), was developed an interesting form of Mass adapted to the local culture. It has been named “Misa Adat”. In this article at first the author discusses the problem of “adat”. This tradition makes important reality in the spiritual life of people living there. The article makes an attempt of reflection on spiritual needs and the fruits of this adaptation. At the end the author points at the differences of such liturgy compared to the traditional form of liturgy of Eucharist described in the Roman Missal.

Autor artykułu podejmuje refleksję nad problemem odnowienia i ożywienia tradycyjnego związku liturgii i kultury, którego warunkiem wydaje się być odpowiednia formacja liturgiczna współczesnych wiernych. Liturgia rozumiana jako kult oddawany Bogu przez ludzi jest częścią ludzkiej kultury. To liturgia jest szczególnym przykładem inkulturacji chrześcijaństwa, trwającej nieprzerwanie w jego historii. Dziś proces ten wymaga podjęcia nowych wyzwań wobec kryzysu kultury współczesnej, która osłabiła swoje związki z religią. Dzisiejszy człowiek zatracił zdolność rozumienia symbolicznego języka liturgii. Dlatego papież Franciszek w swoim liście Desiderio desideravi wskazuje na potrzebę pogłębionej formacji liturgicznej wiernych. Taka formacja, która pozwoli wiernym na uchwycenie ponadczasowego przesłania liturgii, uzdolni ich także do jej kształtowania z użyciem nowych kodów kulturowych. W ten sposób formacja liturgiczna może spełnić ważną rolę w odnowieniu związku kultury i liturgii, aby liturgia nadal mogła formować i ubogacać kulturę, czerpiąc równocześnie z jej dziedzictwa.
The author of the article undertakes a reflection upon the issue of renewal and vivification of the traditional relation of liturgy and culture, whose condition seems to be an appropriate liturgical formation of the contemporary faithful. Liturgy understood as worship of God performed by people is a part of human culture. Liturgy is a special example of the Christian inculturation, lasting continuously within the history. Today this process requires considering new challenges facing the crisis of modern culture, which has loosen its bond with religion. A contemporary man has lost the ability to comprehend the symbolic language of liturgy. Therefore the Pope Francis in his Letter  Desiderio desideravi indicates a need of deepened liturgical formation of the faithful. Such formation, that will let the faithful grasp the timeless message of liturgy, will also unable them to shape it by applying new cultural codes. In this sense liturgical formation may play an important role in regaining connection of culture and liturgy, so that liturgy could still form and enrich culture, at the same time drawing from its heritage.

W dość długi już katalog umów zawieranych po Soborze Watykańskim II przez Stolicę Apostolską z państwami afrykańskimi wpisała się umowa ramowa (Accord-cadre) w sprawach wspólnego interesu (sur matières d’intérêt commun) zawarta 6 listopada 2012 r. z Republiką Burundi. Traktat ten, obejmujący preambułę, 22 artykuły oraz aneks, reguluje szeroki wachlarz spraw interesujących obydwie strony. Stanowi znaczący, jak się wydaje, instrument służący wzajemnemu, obustronnie wzbogacającemu dialogowi kultury z wiarą. Preambuła umowy, obejmująca siedem akapitów, wskazuje cel, przesłanki i okoliczności jej zawarcia. Uzgodnienia zawarte w Umowie ramowej, zawarte w poszczególnych artykułach, dotyczą następujących spraw: zasady ogólne, sprawowanie kultu Bożego, nominacje kościelne, przestępstwa duchownych i osób zakonnych oraz sekrety: spowiedzi i zawodowy, dobra materialne kościelnych osób prawnych oraz duchownych, budownictwo sakralne i kościelne, posługiwanie się przez Kościół środkami przekazu, małżeństwo, zrzeszanie się wiernych, prowadzenie przez Kościół placówek oświatowych i wychowawczych, prowadzenie przez Kościół instytucji dobroczynnych, udział finansowy Państwa w działalności Kościoła na rzecz narodu, opieka duszpasterska nad zaangażowanymi w siłach zbrojnych i bezpieczeństwa oraz nad przebywającymi w zakładach i instytutach zamkniętych, postanowienia końcowe. Należy mieć nadzieję, że umowa Stolicy Apostolskiej i Republiki Burundi, uchylając rozdźwięk między Kościołem a kulturą plemienną tego kraju, stanie się – w jakiejś mierze – skutecznym narzędziem inkulturacji na kontynencie afrykańskim.
Among quite a long catalogue of agreements concluded by the Holy See with African states after the Second Vatican Council there is the framework agreement (Accord-cadre) on mutual interest (sur matières d’intérêt commun) concluded on 6 November 2012 with the Republic of Burundi. The treatise consisting of the preamble, 22 articles and the annex regulates a wide range of matters of interest to both parties. Apparently it is a considerable instrument aimed at mutual dialogue of the culture and faith, which enriches both parties. The preamble of the agreement composed of seven paragraphs features the objective, rationale and circumstances of its conclusion. The arrangements included in particular articles of the Frame- work Agreement deal with the following issues: general matters, exercise of the God’s cult, church nominations, crimes committed by the clergy and members of religious orders, the secret of confession and professional secret, material goods of ecclesiastical legal persons and the clergy, sacral and church buildings, the use of the mass media by the Church, marriage, congregating of the faithful, running educational and fostering facilities by the Church, running charitable institutions by Church, the state’s financial contribution in the activities pursued by the Church for the nation, ministerial care over persons engaged in armed and security forces and over persons staying in closed facilities and institutes, final provisions. It should be hoped that while bridging the differences between the Church and country’s tribal culture the agreement of the Holy See and the Republic of Burundi will become to some extent and effective tool of inculturation on the African continent.

Liturgia to żywy organizm, w którym Bóg wychodzi do człowieka i zaprasza go do zaangażowanego w zbawczy dialogu. Tajemnica wolności Boga i wolności człowieka spotykają się w niej i osadzone na porządku i prawie tworzą wyjątkową przestrzeń, w której uczestniczący człowiek jest w wstanie wyrazić siebie w pełni i zrealizować drogę zbawienie. Przez to spotkanie tworzy się kultura wyrazu nowego człowieka, który doświadczając Boga opisuje świat, siebie i inne osoby w Bożym kluczu. Człowiek nie tylko tworzy ale i jest również tworzony w przestrzeni swojego życia religijnego, społecznego i domowego, czyli prze kulturę. Ale kiedy ten człowiek zaczyna odrzucać Boga i zaczyna tworzyć wszystko po swojemu, to wówczas ten zbawczy, liturgiczny dialog jest utrudniony a czasem nawet niemożliwy. Twórczość w takich wypadkach często już nie ma w sobie znamienia boskości ale totalne zabarwienie antropocentryczne. Trudno wówczas szukać w niej przestrzeni liturgicznej, a czasami nawet można wyczuć jakąś wrogą, agresywnie kontestującą aurę. Wydaje się, że dziś przychodzi nam żyć w rozwiniętym świecie, który już nie żyje kulturą, ale popkulturą o intensywnym antropocentrycznym kształcie. W tekście artykułu możemy odnaleźć refleksję dotyczącą relacji liturgii, jej porządku i wolności do popkultury, w której przychodzi nam żyć. Jest to też próba odpowiedzi na pytanie, bez uzurpowania sobie praw do ostatecznych wyjaśnień i rozwiązań, jaką postawę powinien podjąć Kościół w relacji do tej mało transcendentnej przestrzeni twórczości człowieka jaką jest popkultura.
Liturgy is a living thing, in which God reaches people, and invites them to engage in a dialogue aimed at salvation. During the liturgy, the mystery of human and God’s freedom meet, and are based on law and order. Furthermore, they constitute an exceptional space, in which people are able to wholly express themselves and follow the way leading to salvation. This uncanny meeting initiates the creation of man’s cultural expressions. In fact, people who experience God describe themselves, the world around them and others through the prism of „God’s key”, and therefore they discern values and qualities praised by God. Moreover, not only do people create, but they are also created by culture in their religious, social, and family lives. Nevertheless, when someone starts to reject God and begins to devise everything by himself, the liturgical dialogue aimed at salvation becomes aggravated or even impossible. In that case, the act of creating is not influenced by God’s will, but becomes a purely anthropocentric act, which means that a person regards himself as if he was in the centre of the universe. Thereby, in such an act of creating, it is hardly possible to find an exceptional liturgical space in which God meets with a human. What is more, a hostile aura can be sensed, and it seems to call into question the almightiness of God. Hence, by looking at today’s developed world, it can be said that rather than being dominated by culture, it is controlled by pop culture, which is an expression of the contemporary people’s belief in their anthropocentricity. This article is a reflection concerning the relationship between pop culture and the liturgy, including its order and freedom. Without providing the readers with a definite answer, it also constitutes an attempt to cogitate on what the attitude of the church towards pop culture should be, considering the fact that it permeates the lives of contemporary people.

Realizacja podstawowej misji Kościoła dokonuje się poprzez munus docendi oraz munus sanctificandi. W ramach wypełniania tych zadań wspólnota założona przez Chrystusa spotka się z różnymi kulturami i zostaje włączona w proces inkulturacji. Ta ostatnia wskazuje na potrzebę budowania właściwych relacji pomiędzy wiarą i kulturą. Jej szczególnym wyrazem jest inkulturacja liturgiczna, którą można zdefiniować jako proces wprowadzania tekstów i obrzędów kultycznych do struktury kultury lokalnej. W niniejszym opracowaniu został ukazany proces inkulturacji w odniesieniu do prawa liturgicznego, jak również zaprezentowane modele inkulturacji, które są niezwykle ważne w procesie tworzenia publicznego kultu Bożego i przystosowanej modlitwy liturgicznej.
The basic mission of the Church is carried out through munus docendi and munus sanctificandi. In fulfilling these tasks, the community founded by Christ meets with different cultures and becomes involved in the process of inculturation. The latter points to the need to build proper relationships between faith and culture. Its special expression is the liturgical inculturation, which can be defined as the process of introducing cultic texts and rites into the structure of local culture. This study presents the process of the inculturation in relation to the liturgical law, as well as models of inculturation, which are extremely important in the process of creating public worship and liturgical prayer.

Punktem wyjścia rozważań autora, czeskiego salezjanina, jest wcielone działanie Boga, które wywarło wpływ na historię narodu żydowskiego. Chrześcijaństwo zostało „wszczepione” społeczno-kulturowo w hellenizowany judaizm. Wszystkie trzy fale misji w historii chrześcijaństwa naznaczone były także różnorodnym dostosowaniem doktryny i praktyki wiary do obecnych form myślenia. W teologii XX wieku do tej adaptacji użyto terminu „inkulturacja”. Inkulturacja jest rozumiana jako wyraz zasady wcielenia w działaniu Boga. Ten sam Syn Boży, urodzony w konkretnych okolicznościach społeczno-kulturowych, stanowi też fundament wiary chrześcijan wszystkich ludów i narodów, w tym także tak zwanych młodych Kościołów. Autor rozszerza jednak ważność wcielenia daleko poza granice misji ad gentes. W tym artykule wyjaśnia znaczenie inkulturacji dla nowoczesności i postmodernizmu, a także opowiada się za uwzględnianiem zasady inkulturacji w rozpowszechnianiu już sprawdzonych i poszukiwaniu nowych duchowych dróg (sposobów życia) ze społeczno-kulturowego środowiska założyciela (zakonu lub wspólnoty życia) do innych krajów i na inne kontynenty. Inkulturation und Charisma. Überlegungen zur Einheit in der Verschiedenheit Der Ausgangspunkt der Überlegungen des Verfassers, eines tschechischen Salesianers, ist die inkarnatorische Handlungsweise Gottes, die sich in der Geschichte des jüdischen Volks auswirkte. Das Christentum wurde soziokulturell auf das hellenisierte Judentum „eingepflanzt“. Auch alle drei Missionswellen in der Geschichte des Christentums wurde durch die mannigfaltige Anpassung der Glaubenslehre und -praxis auf die aktuellen Denkformen gekennzeichnet. In der Theologie des 20. Jahrhunderts wurde dann für diese Anpassung der Begriff „Inkulturation“ gewendet. Die Inkulturation wird als ein Ausdruck des Inkarnationsprinzips der Handlung Gottes verstanden. Derselbe Gottessohn, der in die konkreten soziokulturellen Umstände hineingeboren ist, der stellt auch den Fundament Glaubens der Christen aller Völker und Nationen dar, einschließlich der sog. „jungen Kirchen“. Der Verfasser erweitert aber die Geltung der Inkarnation über die Grenze der Missionen ad gentes weit hinaus. Er erklärt in diesem Artikel die Bedeutung der Inkulturation an die Moderne und Postmoderne und plädiert auch für die Wahrnehmung des Inkulturationsprinzips auch bei der Verbreitung der schon bewährten sowie der neuen spirituellen Wege (der Lebensweisen) aus dem soziokulturellen Milieu des Gründers/der Gründerin in andere Länder und Kontinente.
The author’s, a Czech Salesian opening concept is the original effect of the God’s incarnation which had an impact on the history of Jewish nation. Christianity was injected into the specific socio-cultural stream of Hellenistic (Greek), Jewish thought. All three missionary actions were marked by being imbued with the current forms of thought and custom. In the 20th century this form of adaptation is called inculturation. This is to say that the Son of God was born into a specific socio-economic environment and not some abstract reality. This is the foundation of Christian faith in all cultures and movements known as “Young Churches.” The author, however expands this view of missionary concepts wider than that in Ad Gentes. In his article he explains the meaning of inculturation for the current and post-modern scenes. He also supports the concept for the sake of finding new “ways of life” deriving from the original idea to be applicable in other countries and continents.

The purpose of the article is to show the dynamics of evangelization in the context of the culture of the peoples living in the mountainous areas of Papua New Guinea. The starting point is the history of Christianization of these areas and the rooting of Churches of various denominations there. The analysis reveals the tools of evangelization used by Catholic missionaries to penetrate the culture and traditions of the local inhabitants, which resulted in the formation of new Christian communities.

Rok Wiary był szczególną okazją do refleksji także katechetycznej nad drogami, po których winna dzisiaj zdążać katecheza, by spełnić swój podstawowy obowiązek „czynienia świadków Ewangelii aż po krańce świata”. W sytuacji przemian kulturowo-społecznych konieczne wprost staje się zdynamizowanie nowej ewangelizacji, opartej na kerygmacie eklezjalnym przepajającym całe życie chrześcijanina, który z wiary czerpać będzie moc apostolskiej posługi.
Year of Faith was a special occasion for reflection on the catechetical ways that catechesis must try to fulfill its primary obligation “to deal with the witnesses of the Gospel to the ends of the world”. In the case of social – cultural changes it is necessary to activate new evangelization, based on the ecclesial Kerygma in Christian life to draw power from faith for apostolic ministry.
