Many patterns found in natural language syntax have multiple pos-sible explanations or structural descriptions. Even within the cur-rently dominant Minimalist framework (Chomsky 1995, 2000), it is not uncommon to encounter multiple types of analyses for the same phenomenon proposed in the literature. A natural question, then, is whether one could evaluate and compare syntactic proposals from a quantitative point of view. In this paper, we show how an evaluation measure inspired by the minimum description length principle (Rissa-nen 1978) can be used to compare accounts of syntactic phenomena implemented as minimalist grammars (Stabler 1997), and how argu-ments for and against this kind of analysis translate into quantitative differences.

Opis:
W artykule przedstawiono zastosowanie miary średniokwadratowej do detekcji krawędzi między dwoma obszarami izotermicznymi. Badania symulacyjne przeprowadzono w oparciu o prosty matematyczny model krawędzi. Miara średniokwadratowa została zastosowana jako miara rozproszenia sygnału w obszarze krawędzi. Detekcje położenia krawędzi przeprowadzono metodą poszukiwania maksimum z zastosowaniem aproksymacji miary rozproszenia funkcją ciągłą. W symulacjach uwzględniono wpływ zakłóceń na dokładność przedstawionego algorytmu lokalizacji krawędzi.
The paper deals with an application of mean square measure to the edge detection between two isothermal areas. Simulation tests were based on a simple mathematical model of the edge. The mean square measure has been used as a measure of dispersion of edge neighbourhood. Edge location estimation has been conducted searching maximum value of the dispersion of samples by means of continuous function approximation. Simulation tests with and without noise have been carried out.

Przedstawiono syntezę sześciu podstawowych podejść do oceny miary niedokładności pomiaru, w szczególności do obliczeń tzw. niepewności pomiaru - od podejścia deterministycznego po najbardziej uniwersalne podejście naturalne - symulację Monte Carlo. Przedstawiono też zarys sposobu generowania liczb pseudolosowych o trzech rozkładach prawdopodobieństwa rzadziej stosowanych w analizie dokładności pomiaru.
Synthesis of six essential approaches to evaluation of measurement inaccuracy measure, especially to calculation of so-called measurement uncertainty, from a deterministic approach to the most versatile and natural one - Monte Carlo simulation, is presented. A sketch of a generation method of pseudo-random numbers with three, rarely used distributions, is presented as well.

The impact of negative factors on human comfort and ergonomics is of great im portance. Therefore, modern science takes measures to limit, minimize or reduce to zero their impact on the workplace. This article describes the negative conditions at work in underground coal mining along with the use of a developmental measure. It will be used to assess the hazard status of the underground workstation.

The Strait of Istanbul, 17 nautical miles long, is one of the main routes of international maritime trade. Connecting the Black Sea countries with other countries of the world, the Strait is the second busiest waterway in the world in terms of international ship traffic. In addition to busy sea traffic, limited geographical conditions also make it difficult to navigational safety. The Strait of Istanbul is the only chokepoint that stands out with the risk of maritime accidents on the primary routes of world maritime trade. This situation poses a risk for both the transiting ships and the city of Istanbul, which has a dense population around it. Some of the accidents that took place in the recent history have caused worldwide concern due to the environmental pollution they cause. Considering the advantages provided by the developing shipbuilding technology and today load capacity of the ships, a disaster that will occur in a possible accident today will cause much greater destruction than in the past. In this direction, it has become a necessity to examine the accident profile in the strait in order to develop effective accident prevention measures and to strengthen the level of navigational safety in the region. In this study, maritime accidents that occurred in the Strait of Istanbul over a 16-year period were discussed in terms of their types and the response time of tugboats to a possible accident was examined.

The objective of the paper is to evaluate the energy efficiency performance of industrial plants based on energy audit measures using dynamic Data Envelopment Analysis. The paper demonstrates a three-stage DEA based on slacks-based measure approach to evaluate the energy efficiency of U.S. industrial plants. Also, a 3-step approach to select relevant variables to be employed in slacks-based measure model. The paper has revealed inefficiencies of industrial plants, which were considered as efficient ones examined individually in energy audit procedure. The results indicate that half of analyzed plants are not performing at high energy efficiency, given a total of 6 facilities were operating efficiently. It shows that these industrial plants appear to have the potential to reduce their energy use and cost. Moreover, the results were enriched with the additional analysis of input excesses and output shortfalls and further suggestions for improving energy efficiency are provided.

When evaluating or ordering alternatives concerning given multiple criteria, decision-makers often use aspiration and reservation levels for criteria, which allows them to define some reference alternatives that build a common framework for the evaluation. In this paper, new multiple criteria approach, called distances to aspiration reference points (DARP), is presented, which can be implemented in a specific evaluation or ranking problem when many different aspiration levels should be taken into consideration. One example of such problem is measuring sustainable development of countries or states within the Union. In DARP, to measure the performance of alternative (state), the notion of distances between alternative and individual or common aspiration reference points is used. To manage the problem of different reference points, a modified max-min normalisation technique is proposed. DARP application for measuring smart growth of the EU countries is conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

A microsimulation approach was carried out in this paper to evaluate the safety performance of turbo roundabouts in which the "CAVs" of connected autonomous vehicles are mixed with the "CVs" of conventional vehicles the research aims to evaluate the advantages in terms of safety and performance of turbo roundabouts. The paper shall also lead to describe the methodological path followed to build VISSIM models of turbo roundabout changing O_D matrix as real case applications, to calibrate the simulation models, and to estimate the potential conflicts when the percentages of CAVs are introduced into the traffic mix. The results, in accordance with the existing bibliography, have shown that the safety levels and the parameters that determine an improvement in the service level in a turbo roundabouts are significantly influenced not only by the geometric characteristics, but also by the distribution of vehicular flows. Therefore, it follows that in absence of crash data including CAVs, the surrogate measures of safety must be considered a strong approach to evaluate the safety performance of a roundabout so far, any road entity.

Purpose: Gratitude is an interdisciplinary concept frequently explored in positive psychology, which recognizes gratitude as one of the seven transcendent character forces that promote well-being and life satisfaction. The purpose of the conducted research was to develop the concept of gratitude toward the organization and prepare a tool to study this phenomenon. Methods: The study was cross-sectional. Participants were 802 employees from various organizations. Results: The Gratitude Toward the Organization Scale has a good internal consistency (Cronbach’s α was 0.91). Factor analysis confirmed the two-factor structure of this tool. The dimensions of gratitude toward the organization are distinguished as: (1) gratitude as a commitment to reciprocity and (2) gratitude as a moral norm. The construct validity of this measure was confirmed. Gratitude toward the organization correlated positively with job satisfaction, affective commitment to the organization, organizational justice, and perceived organizational and supervisor support, while being negatively correlated with intent to leave the organization. Conclusions: The obtained results confirm very good psychometric properties of the Gratitude Toward the Organization Scale as a valid and reliable measure for studying the gratitude of employees, which can be successfully used by researchers in Poland.

Doświadczenia pierwszych lat realizacji programów rolnośrodowiskowych pozwalają określić zainteresowanie wdrażaniem poszczególnych pakietów. Dokonano próby scharakteryzowania beneficjentów i efektów realizacji programu rolnośrodowiskowego. Jest to ważne w ocenie skuteczności programu i realizacji jego założeń oraz stanowi podstawę konstruowania założeń w kolejnych okresach programowania. Wyniki badań dowodzą, że jakkolwiek idea programu prośrodowiskowego ma dla beneficjentów znaczenie, to najważniejszym czynnikiem są dla rolników uzyskane efekty ekonomiczne i produkcyjne.
The experiences of first years implementation of agri-environmental measures in Poland allow defining the interest in implementation of individual packages. The aim of the paper was also to describe the beneficiaries and results of agri-environmental measures on the farm level. It may be essential in evaluation of the programme and should be the basis in constructing foundations for the next periods programming. The results proved that environmental aspects are important for beneficiaries but economics effects are crucial and are the most important factor for farmers. To improve natural environment and biodiversity in rural areas, the economic aspects have to be carefully considered - payments for particular agri-environmental packages must include the financial motivation.

The paper aims at reminding the classic risk measures and presenting the RiskGrade measure (1994). This statistic allows comparisons between the investment risk of different financial assets and also the risk of financial investments across different regions of the World. Some advantages and disadvantages of this measure of volatility and also technical problems of using will be described. After describing RiskGrade measure, the rating of Open Pension Funds (OPFs) considering the investment risk will be created. Obtained results will be compared with the risk of selected Open Investment Funds (OIFs) - with similar assets structure - operating on the Polish asset’s market. Next part of the paper contains the suggestion of the measure of efficiency of investment based on RiskMetrics volatility.
Celem niniejszego opracowania jest przypomnienie klasycznych miar ryzyka oraz prezentacja miary ryzyka RiskGrade (1994). Statystyka ta pozwala porównywać ryzyko inwestycyjne różnych aktywów finansowych, a także ryzyko inwestycji finansowych pochodzących z różnych regionów Świata. Przedstawione zostaną wady i zalety wspomnianej miary zmienności oraz techniczne problemy jej zastosowania. Po omówieniu metodologii RiskGrade zbudowany zostanie ranking Otwartych Funduszy Emerytalnych (OFE) pod względem ryzyka inwestycyjnego. Uzyskane wyniki porównane zostaną z ryzykiem wybranych Otwartych Funduszy Inwestycyjnych (OFI) - o podobnej strukturze aktywów - działających na polskim rynku kapitałowym. W kolejnym kroku przedstawiona zostanie propozycja miary efektywności inwestycji opartej na zmienności RiskMetrics.

W ocenie efektywności spółdzielni mleczarskich Autorka zastosowała miarę Nadzwyczajnej Spółdzielczej Wartości Dodatkowej (ACAV) według Pietrzaka [2006]. Tak skonstruowana miara integruje zysk spółdzielni z ceną skupu (która zawiera ewentualną korzyść dla rolnika). Porównując ocenę ekonomiczną spółdzielni mleczarskich opartej na zysku ekonomicznym i na ACAV udowodniono znaczne rozbieżności w ocenie rezultatów ekonomicznych podmiotów spółdzielczych.
Abstract. In order to evaluate the efficiency of dairy cooperatives the author applied Abnormal Cooperative Additional Value (ACAV) measure, according to Pietrzak [2006]. The measure constructed in that way integrates profits of cooperative companies with a procurement price (which includes potential benefit to the farmer). Comparing economic evaluation of dairy cooperatives based on economic profit and on ACAV, considerable differences were proved in the evaluation of economic results of cooperative entities.

The purpose of this study was to design, validate, and test the reliability of an instrument to evaluate knowledge of nutrition, weight control and its risk. The instrument collects information regarding: socio-demographics and athletic status; basic knowledge of nutrition (the diet they follow, nutrients, supplements, energy balance, myths, hydration and habits); and weight control and risks (weight control, eating behaviors, and weight control habits). The design, validation, and testing of the reliability of the questionnaire were done in four phases: a) design and development of the instrument, b) content validation, c) instrument reliability, and d) concurrent validity. The results show that the instrument is suitable for measuring nutrition, weight control and risk knowledge in athletes. The instrument that was developed and validated in this paper can contribute to assessing how the athletes evolve through their different formation stages.

Public relations effectiveness measurement is becoming more and more important in realization of public relations activities in Poland. It has been caused by the demand from people ordering such services to achieve measurable results and simultaneous increasing usage of research in public relations, which is related to growing ‘scientification’ of this field of knowledge. Basic requirement, which should be met to measure PR effectiveness, is such planning these activities to have measureable objectives and choosing the indicators and research methods for particular PR tools. It is worth remembering that some difficulties in measurement may occur – knowing them allows to minimize inadequate measurement results. Measuring PR effectiveness allows to continue the most efficient PR activities, resign from the less effective ones and also to search new ideas how to communicate with the target groups.

Rapid development of various kinds of social networks within the Internet enabled investigation of their properties and analyzing their structure. An interesting scientific problem in this domain is the assessment of the node position within the directed, weighted graph that represents the social network of email users. The new method of node position analysis, which takes into account both the node positions of the neighbors and the strength of connections between network nodes, is presented in the paper. The node position can be used to discover key network users, who are the most important in the population and who have potentially the greatest influence on others. The experiments carried out on two datasets enabled studying the main properties of the new measure.
