W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań ostrzałem pancerzy z warstwami o różnych grubościach: płytek ceramicznych (Al2O3, SiC, B4C, AlN), warstw metalowych (aluminiowych, RHA), polietylenu, laminatów lub tkaniny aramidowej. Badano również nowy rodzaj spiekanych płytek z materiałów na bazie faz międzymetalicznych NiAl, wytwarzanych metodą wysokotemperaturowej egzotermicznej reakcji syntezy proszków. Testowane pancerze wytwarzano techniką odlewania lub poprzez łączenie poszczególnych warstw za pomocą klejenia i laminowania. Uzyskano zdolność ochronną przed ostrzałem pociskami przeciwpancernymi kalibru 12.7 mm typu B-32 dla pancerza z płytkami Al2O3, SiC, AlN oraz NiAl10Ni i NiAl10NiSi w osnowie stopu Al. Przeprowadzone badania ostrzałem modeli pasywnego pancerza przestrzennego, z zastosowaniem ceramiki Al2O3, SiC, B4C, (o grubości 8÷10 mm) wykazały skuteczne zatrzymanie 7.62 mm pocisku typu B-32 dla pancerzy o parametrach: grubość ~20 mm, masa 44 kg/m2 dla Al203, 38 kg/m2 dla SiC oraz 32 kg/m2 dla B4C.
The article presents the results of firing test of armour reinforced with layers of different thickness made from ceramic plates, metal (aluminium, RHA), polyethylene, laminates, and aramid fabric. Plates of new type sintered from materials based on the intermetallic phases of NiAl produced by high-temperature exothermic reaction of powder synthesis were also studied. The tested armour was made by casting or by joining individual layers with glue and lamination. The strength necessary to protect the armour against firing with B-32 armour piercing projectiles of 12.7 mm calibre was obtained for armour plates made of Al2O3, SiC, AlN, NiAl10Ni and NiAl10NiSi incorporated in an Al alloy matrix. Studies of the firing test of passive spatial armour models made from the Al2O3, SiC, B4C ceramics (with the thickness of 8÷10 mm) showed effective stopping of 7.62mm calibre B-32 AP projectiles in armour of the following parameters: thickness ~ 20 mm, weight 44 kg/m2 for Al203, 38 kg/m2 for SiC and 32 kg/m2 for B4C.

The paper includes results of firing tests of the steel plates with nano-structures, i.e. bainitic NANOS-BA® and maraging of size 50x50x5-10 mm, 100x100x5-10 mm and 150x150x5-10 mm, placed on the armour plate RHA (Rolled Homogenous Armour) type Armox 500T or Armox 600T of size 500x500x10 mm, so called "witness plate". There are also presented results of firing tests of the composite space panels CAWA-3+ and CAWA-4 for protection of light armoured vehicles against the anti-tank ammunition type B-32 of 12.7 mm and 14.5 mm calibre. The space panels of size 3300x17.2-22 mm and 254x300x17.2-22 mm were placed at the distance L< 150 mm from the protected thin armour RHA type Armox 500T of 8 mm thickness. These panels included, among others steel plates with nano-structures (of size from 150x150x5-10 mm to 300x350x7-8 mm), i.e. bainitic NANOS-BA® and maraging, armoured steel plates and light metal plates. Effective stopping Af se projectiles in the tested panels was achieved without any traces of the projectile impact on toe RHA plate of 8 mm thickness.
Artykuł zawiera wyniki badań ostrzałem płyt ze stali nanostrukturalnych, tj. bainitycznych NANOS-BA® i maraging o wymiarach 50x50x5-10 mm, 100x100x5-10 mm oraz 150x150x5-10 mm umieszczonych na płycie pancernej RHA (Rolled Homogenous Armour) typu Armox 500T lub Armox 600T o wymiarach 500x500x10 mm, tzw. płycie "świadek" Przedstawiono również wyniki ostrzałów kompozytowych paneli przestrzennych CAWA-3+ i CAWA-4 do ochrony o opancerzonych pojazdów przed przebiciem pociskami przeciwpancernymi B-32 kalibru 12.7 mm i 14.5 mm. Panele przestrzenne o wymiarach 300x300x17.2-22 mm i 254x300x17.2-22 mm umieszczono w odległości L < 150 mm od ochranianego cienkiego pancerza RHA typu Armox 500T o grubości 8 mm. Panele te zawierały między innymi płyty ze stali nanostrukturalnych (o wymiarach od 150x150x6-10 mm do 300x350x7-8 mm), tj. bainityczne (NANOS-BA®) i maraging, stalowe płyty pancerne oraz płyty z metali lekkich. Uzyskano skuteczne zatrzymanie tych pocisków w badanych panelach bez śladów uderzenia pocisku na płycie RHA o grubości 8 mm.

The paper presents principles of designing and examination results of superclean high-strength new generation maraging steel for composite armours protecting against piercing with small-calibre armour-piercing (AP) projectiles. The research concerns maraging steel of yield strength ≥ 2,5 GPa and suitable toughness required to achieve high resistance of armour to piercing with AP projectiles. Three base compositions of maraging steel (MS) of yield strength 400 ksi, 500 ksi and 550 ksi with different content of alloying elements Fe, Ni, Co, Mo, W, V are described. The process of vacuum melting of the concerned steels was presented as well as further processing, i.e. homogenizing treatment, hot working, machining, solution treatment, ageing and grinding in order to prepare plates with dimensions of 50 × 50 × 10 mm. The manner of perpendicular firing at the aforementioned plates placed on a stand with RHA armour "witness" plate is presented. Moreover, demonstrated are also the visible results of maraging plates firing with 12,7 mm B-32 type armour-piercing incendiary projectiles on RHA plates. Also shown are the images of scans performed using an electron microscope of maraging plates' fracture surface generated by firing.

Opis:
Results of tests of mechanical properties and resistance to perforation with small-calibre armour-piercing projectiles for new designed grades of nano-precipitates hardened steels have been presented. The results comprise of mechanical properties essential for materials used in armour and microstructure which influences the mechanisms of piercing. Plate segments of high-alloyed maraging steels and low-carbon Ni-Mo steels were produced using semi-industrial lines for melting, casting and thermo-mechanical treatment. Plate segments were produced with the use of different parameters of final heat treatment in order to achieve a wide range of mechanical properties. Preliminary assessment of the protection capability concerning piercing was carried out based on the results of firing tests with 12.7 mm B-32 incendiary projectiles at square steel plates of 50÷150 mm in dimension and of 5÷10 mm in thickness placed on an RHA (Armox 500T and Armox 600T) "witness" plate. A minimal thickness of plates which protected the "witness" plate and did not fragment was determined. The microstructure in the area of the projectile impact was examined. The usability of newly designed grades of steel in layered armour and the possibilities of the production of these plates from the steel in domestic steel plants were pointed out.

The paper presents mechanical and physical properties measured in static conditions, and some properties determined in dynamic conditions, of plates of new nano-composite bainite-austenite (NANOS-BA) steel to be used for construction of armours. Firing tests of NANOS-BA steel plates fixed on a base plate of RHA (Rolled Homogenous Armour), Armox 500T and Armox 600T steel, carried out by means of 12.7 mm B-32 projectiles have demonstrated that in the conditions of tests, NANOS-BA steel shows better protective properties than 500BHN and 600BHN – grade commercial plates. NANOS-BA steel plate of minimum 5 mm thickness has protected Armox 500T and Armox 600T plate from piercing. Quantitative effects were assessed of firing the NANOS-BA steel plates of 50 x 50 mm and 100 x 100 mm surface dimensions, and thickness in the range of 5÷10 mm, as well as sets of the NANOS-BA steel plates of 100 x 100 x (4÷8) mm dimensions, arranged in layers on the base plate. It was determined that ballistic limit V50 for NANOS-BA plate of 6.0 mm thickness, for the 7.62 x 51 mm M61 AP (Armour Piercing) projectile, amounts to 797±10 m/s. Based on the analysis which compared results of tests carried out with the application of various parameters it was estimated that the value of V50 obtained for NANOS-BA steel is higher than the parameters of the highest grade steel plates offered in the global market. The tests imply that NANOS-BA steel is a prospective material for armour construction which can enable to reduce weight of armours and/or to improve their protective parameters in comparison with the presently used structures. Due to very high protective capability, monolithic plates of NANOS-BA steel can be used as one of the layers of the composite armour.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań morfologii i mikrostruktury obszarów odkształconych dynamiczne w ostrzelanych pociskami płytkach z dwóch nowych gatunków stali nanokrystalicznych. Badania wykonano na próbkach z nanokompozytowej stali bainityczno – austenitycznej (stal NBA) i ultrawytrzymałej stali maraging (stal MAR). Oceniono efekty ostrzału testowych płytek ze stali nanokrystalicznych. W ostrzelanych płytkach z obydwu stali w sąsiedztwie krawędzi krateru stwierdzono strukturalne efekty odkształcenia osnowy. W strefie odkształcenia powstały adiabatyczne pasma ścinania oraz mikropęknięcia. Średnia twardość adiabatycznych pasm ścinania w stali NBA jest wyższa od średniej twardość osnowy tej stali, natomiast w stali MAR stwierdzono efekt odwrotny - średnia twardość adiabatycznych pasm ścinania jest niższa od średniej twardości osnowy tej stali.
Results of investigation of morphology and microstructure in dynamically deformed areas of fired with projectiles plates made of new grades of nanocrystalline steels have been presented. Investigation was carried out on specimens of nanocomposite bainite – austenite steel (NBA steel) and ultrastrength maraging steel (MAR steel). Effects of firing at test plates of the nanocrystalline steels have been assessed. In the plates of the both steels tested by firing in areas close to edge of the crater structural features of matrix deformation were found. In the deformation areas adiabatic shear bands and microcracks formed. Average hardness of adiabatic shear bands in NBA steel is higher than average hardness of matrix of this steel while in MAR steel an opposite effect was found – average hardness of adiabatic shear bands was lower than average hardness of matrix of this steel.

Paper presents the results of numerical research on the influence of the movement conditions (velocity and various types and parameters of obstacles) on the level of dynamic loads of the body shell and the vehicle crew of the basic version of Wheeled Armoured Personnel Carrier (Wheeled APC) ROSOMAK. The research work was aimed at analysis of the dynamic loads resulting from the overcoming various terrain obstacles. Kinematic constraints acting on suspension used during tests were random and deterministic, e.g. sine, cosine, triangle as well as mixed, imitating fallen tree trunk on smooth surface. Simulations were carried out with the genuine proprietary software for numerical analysis of dynamics of multi-axis vehicles equipped with independent suspension. The paper consists description of the mathematical model of multi-axis vehicle, deterministic and random generated inputs and range of performed tests. Time courses of displacement, velocity, vertical and angular (longitudinal and transverse) accelerations were determined for chosen parts of vehicle. Paper also contains time courses of deflection for every suspension wheel and dynamical reactions of the ground as well as selected time charts and cumulative statistics. Finally paper presents conclusions formulated about dynamic loads of APC ROSOMAK depending on parameters and types of obstacles and vehicle velocity.

The work presents selected results of experimental research on special purpose vehicles used on military training grounds, and bench tests of their main structural elements. The results are connected mainly with identifying the main vibration parameters of those vehicles (regarding weight, resilience and damping), and with the assessment of the level of dynamic loads. The more output data experimental research provides, the more input data we have for designing models. Determined in laboratory tests, weight parameters (regarding weight and moments of inertia), coefficients of stiffness and damping, as well as selected resilience and damping characteristics, are applied in the process of creating the numerical models of assemblies, systems, and complete vehicles. The numerical models created are subject to full verification in order to minimize the differences between the real objects and their representations. The models are applied in multivariate simulation tests of the existing design solutions, upgrading them, or creating new designs. Due to a certain sensitivity of the range of special purpose vehicles, the results of experimental tests and simulation analyses presented in the work are mainly qualitative rather than quantitative.

Military vehicles are used less intensively than the civil ones, and many types of the vehicles used by the army are stored for a long time. Therefore, this type of vehicles can be used even for a dozens of years. Due to the constant development of technology, used armament and military equipment has to be adjusted to current needs. The above applies also to recovery vehicles, including field workshops. This work analyses the level of safety and comfort of the crew of the modified field workshop (Sarna II) when the vehicle is moving under various conditions. The scope of improvement included two seats inside workshop for the transportation of the crew members. Experimental research involved measuring the accelerations on the seats of the crew and the noise inside the vehicle body. The assessment was conducted on the basis of the highest value of 8-hour of the exposure to the whole body vibrations A(8). The accelerations acting on the seats were determined mainly by the kind of the road, its roughness and the speed of the vehicle. The occupational risk connected with the exposure to the mechanical vibrations was in most cases assessed to be low or moderate. The risk was assessed to be high only when the vehicle was moving on the dirt road. Results of experimental researches indicated that passengers travelling in the body of Sarna II workshop, mounted on the underbody of STAR 266M2 vehicle, have ensured proper conditions of transport, both in terms of exposure to mechanical vibrations and to the noise.

The extortions that result in the vibrations of a hull of the combat vehicle have an impact on the tracked combat vehicle during the off-road driving. They may have a negative impact on the crew, internal equipment, shooting accuracy. A level of the hull loads depends on quality of the suspension system, which main responsibility consists in minimising an amplitude of the vibrations. Therefore, it is necessary both to improve a structure of the suspension system, and its components, as well as their optimisation. The tests of the driving smoothness of the vehicle and quality of the suspension elements can be realised both within a frame of the model tests and while driving in the real conditions. The assessment criteria of the driving smoothness are directly related to the negative influence of the vibrations to the human body. The suspension quality should be assumed both upon an execution of the vehicle prototype, and during the design or modernisation phase. It results both in reducing the time, and minimisation of the costs and risk related to the structure development. The model tests enable to evaluate the driving smoothness and comfort prior to an execution of the prototype. The tests on the test tracks in the final phase of the development are carried out in order to evaluate the driving smoothness.

Since the beginning of the 90’s, a scientific team in the Motor Vehicle and Transport Institute of the Mechanical Department in the Military University of Technology, has been involved in the model and experimental tests of the existing structures of the military vehicles (tanks, combat infantry vehicles and wheeled armoured carriers) in the aspect of their modernization. A part of works is related to the military vehicles included in the army’s equipment and the other parts are related to newly designed vehicles. In both cases issues related to the behaviour of selected assemblies and the whole vehicle, structure during threats posed by the reality of contemporary battlefield or armed symmetric or asymmetric conflicts are analysed. Selected effects of the tests and analyses will be presented mostly within the qualitative scope due to the data sensitivity. Contemporary design of military vehicles requires involvement of various research methods and specialized calculation software. The results obtained during performed various experimental tests make a valuable basis for verification of numerical models used in design process and multi-option simulation calculations.

Artykuł zawiera najważniejsze rezultaty projektu pt. „Technologie wytwarzania supertwardych materiałów nanostrukturalnych ze stopów żelaza oraz ich zastosowanie w pancerzach pasywnych i pasywno-reaktywnych” UDAPOIG.01.03.01-00-042/08-05, zrealizowanego w okresie w okresie 1.02.2009 – 31.08.2013 przez Instytut Metalurgii Żelaza (lider konsorcjum) oraz Wojskowy Instytut Techniczny Uzbrojenia (członek konsorcjum). Celem projektu było opracowanie gatunków stali o strukturze nanokrystalicznej przeznaczonych do zastosowania w konstrukcji pancerzy chroniących przed przebiciem pociskami przeciwpancernymi oraz opracowanie modeli pancerzy zawierających warstwy z opracowanych gatunków stali. Do badań wytypowano trzy rodzaje materiałów: superczyste wysokowytrzymałe stale maraging, wysokowęglowe stale bainityczne o strukturze nanokrystalicznej oraz dwufazowe nanokrystaliczno – amorficzne stopy żelaza. Zaprojektowano nowy gatunek stali ultrawytrzymałej (oznaczony NANOS-BA) o składzie chemicznym 0,6%C-1,8%Si-2,0%Mn + dodatki Cr, Co, Mo, V, zapewniającym wytworzenie nanostruktury składającej się z nanolistew bezwęglikowego bainitu i austenitu resztkowego. Opracowano wytyczne do przemysłowej technologii wytwarzania blach ze stali NANOS-BA o grubości z zakresu 4÷20 mm i ich obróbki cieplnej. Po fi nalnej obróbce cieplnej właściwości mechaniczne blach NANOS-BA są następujące: Rm >1,9 GPa, R 0,2 >1,3 GPa, A5 > 14%, HV10 > 600. Zaprojektowano zmodyfikowane gatunki ultrawytrzymałych stali maraging w klasach od MS350 do MS550 i parametry niestandardowej obróbki cieplnej zwiększającej ciągliwość oraz nową stal umacnianą wydzieleniowo o obniżonej w stosunku do stali typu maraging zawartości pierwiastków stopowych, oznaczoną NANOS-3D. Opracowano skład chemiczny stopu na bazie żelaza Fe-10%Mo-3%Cr-3,2%C-1,2%B charakteryzujący się zdolnością do morfizacji przy stosunkowo małej szybkości chłodzenia ze stanu ciekłego (rzędu 102 ºC/s). Zbudowano i uruchomiono stanowisko laboratoryjne do topienia i odlewania stopów na bazie Fe w formie elementów o grubości do 5 mm wykazujących strukturę nanokrystaliczno-amorficzną. Osiągnięcie poziomu pozwalającego na uzyskanie wyrobów amorficznych o wymaganym zespole właściwości do zastosowań przemysłowych wymaga dalszych badań. Opracowano modele numeryczne do symulacji oddziaływania pocisków z pancerzem z blachy stalowej na bazie programów LS-DYNA i AUTODYN. Na podstawie wyników badań ostrzałem stwierdzono, że zdolność ochronna płytek ze stali NANOS-BA i ze stali maraging o zoptymalizowanych właściwościach jest wyższa od zdolności ochronnej płyt stalowych o najwyższych parametrach dostępnych obecnie na rynku. Oceniając właściwości mechaniczne, poziom ochrony balistycznej, koszty wytwarzania i możliwość uruchomienia produkcji w kraju, do przemysłowego wytwarzania elementów pancerzy wytypowano stal nanobainityczną NANOS-BA. Zaprojektowano konstrukcję oraz opracowano dokumentację konstrukcyjną i wykonawczą modułu pasywnego pancerza warstwowego w wersji produkcyjnej, zawierającego warstwę z opracowanej w projekcie stali NANOS-BA.
The most important results of the project ”Technology of production of superhard nanostructured Fe–based alloys and their application in passive and passive-reactive armours” UDA-POIG.01.03.01-00-042/08-05, carried out in the period of 1.02.2009 – 31.08.2013 by Instytut Metalurgii Żelaza (lider of the consortium) and Wojskowy Instytut Techniczny Uzbrojenia (member of the consortium) are reported in the paper. The main goal of the project was to develop new nanostructured steel grades intended for application in armour constructions protecting against anti-tank ammunition as well as to develop armour models containing layers made of the developed steel grades. Three types of materials were chosen for investigation: ultra-clean high-strength maraging steels, high-carbon bainitic steels with nanocrystalline structure and dual-phase nanocrystalline – amorphous iron alloys. A new grade of medium alloy ultra-strength steel (named NANOS-BA) containing 0.6%C-1.8%Si-2.0%Mn + additions of Cr, Co, Mo, V allowing to form the nanostructure comprising nano-laths of carbideless bainite and retained austenite was developed. The guidelines and preliminary parameters of industrial technology for manufacturing of 4-20 mm thick plates from NANOS-BA steel were worked out. After the final heat treatment the plates characterised with the following properties: Rm >1.9 GPa, R 0.2 >1.3 GPa, A5 > 14%, HV10 > 600. Modified grades of ultra-strength maraging steels of classes from MS350 to MS550 were designed and parameters of non-standard heat treatment increasing the toughness were proposed and a new precipitation strengthened steel grade named NANOS-3D, containing lower amount of alloying elements in comparison with maraging steels was designed. A composition of iron – based alloy Fe-10%Mo-3%Cr-3.2% C-1.2%B characterised with amorphisation ability at relatively low cooling rate of about 102 ºC/s was developed. Experimental facilities for melting and casting of Fe – based alloys with nanograined – amorphous structure in the form of up to 5 mm thick components was designed and commissioned. Manufacturing of several millimetre thick metallic alloys with amorphous structure is a new method in the world and achieving the level allowing to get the products of required set of properties for industrial applications needs further research to be undertaken. Numerical models based on LS-DYNA and AUTODYN programmes to simulate the interaction between projectiles and the armour made of steel plate were developed. From analysis of the fi ring tests results it was found that the protection ability of specimens made of NANOS-BA steel and maraging steels with the optimised properties was higher than the protection ability of the steel plates with the highest currently available parameters. Based on assessment of mechanical properties, level of protection ability, manufacturing costs and possibility of starting domestic production, nanobainitic steel NANOS-BA was selected for industrial production of armour components. The construction design and technical specifications enabling industrialproduction of a module of the passive layered armour containing a NANOS-BA layer were worked out.

This paper presents issues related to the process of designing a 30-feet container to be used as a mobile laboratory for collecting the environmental samples and identification of biological threats. Tactical and technical assumptions for the container, taking into account the requirements of the transport and movement of the army at long distances and in the difficult areas by means of transport characterized by increased traction properties, made the starting point. A possible way of relocation on the land roads using commonly available and military means of transport, possibilities of loading and unloading using the autonomic system and automatic levelling system are described. It describes the process of creating the MES model of the supporting structure and assumptions taken for that purpose. The basic assumption included invariability of shape, geometry and dimensions of a container compared to containers recognized in the world as the standard ones. Some results of numerical calculations carried out at two stages are presented. At the first stage, the issues on the own values were solved. Frequencies of own vibrations and associated forms of vibrations were identified. At the second stage, forced container vibrations were analysed. Resistance calculations were performed for the supporting structure of the container in the aspect of evaluation of the strain condition of the whole structure, as well as its components for assumed load variants. A variability of resistance calculations takes into account such cases as the influence of the under-container trailer riding on the uneven ground, loading and unloading a container from a trailer using autonomous system, diversity of loads on the supports resulting from the change of the ground density under the supports. A preliminary analysis of container transport possibilities and transport unit traction properties have been also carried out.

The results of the experimental research on the influence of the special vehicle movement conditions on the body shell and the vehicle crew dynamic load will be presented in the paper. ROSOMAK Wheeled Armoured Personnel Carrier (Wheeled APC), the basic version, was the subject of the research. The research work was aimed at analysis of the dynamic loads resulting from the deterministic inputs and driving on the selected types of surfaces generating random kinematic inputs. The personnel carrier service conditions, measuring apparatus, and testing methods will be described. The vertical accelerations of the selected points of the vehicle, and deflection of the prime and second suspension of the vehicle left side were measured. The time and the acceleration RMS value spectrum charts for the selected implementations will be presented. The cumulative statistics will be shown in the form of a table. The conclusions regarding the influence of the road surface on the personnel carrier driver's working comfort will be formulated. The assessment of the suspension quality will be included in the conclusions. Driving on the smooth surface is comfortable. However, the road surface worsening causes decreased proficiency sense until the exposure limit boundary is reached when the vehicle drives on a poor quality cobble road with 50 km/h speed. The vehicle basic version is not fitted with the seats for assault troops, therefore the influence of the road irregularities on the centre of mass of the body shell, and the driver's and commander's seats were determined. It is recommended to make further tests on the personnel carrier combat and special versions.

Influence of pressure on the phase transition temperature T$\text{}_{C}$ and on the spontaneous magnetisation M$\text{}_{0}$ of highly Sr substituted and oxygen nonstoichiometric La$\text{}_{1-x}$Sr$\text{}_{x}$CoO$\text{}_{3-δ}$ samples was investigated. An increase in T$\text{}_{C}$ and M$\text{}_{0}$ with pressure in investigated samples was found, indicating strengthening of ferromagnetic double exchange interactions, and the expansion of volume of ferromagnetic phase as a~result of enhancement in ferromagnetic interactions in both cluster-glass and long range ferromagnetic states. We did not observe clear correlation between changes in pressure coefficient dT$\text{}_{C}$/dP and changes in the formal oxidation state of the Co ion.
