Opis:
A hybrid type of apparatus is described which enables one to form a thin multi-layer film on the surface of any kind of solid substrate. In one process, the surface is treated with a high intensity pulse plasma beam which introduces the chosen kind of atoms into the near-surface layer of the substrate. In the second process, following the first without breaking the vacuum, the coating is formed by arc PVD (physical vapour deposition) process. Two examples of coatings formed on metallic and ceramic substrates are presented.

Opis:
Titanium atoms were alloyed into a polycrystalline alundum substrate using a various number of intense pulses consisting of plasma of the working gas and vapor and low energy ions of Ti eroded from electrodes of the rod plasma injector type generator. It appears that at a single pulse titanium always forms a thin metallic film not mixed with the substrate material. With increasing number of pulses the amount of titanium atoms mixed into the substrate increases, whereas the thickness of the film - decreases. Analyses of phase composition and of structural properties, as well as computer simulations of thermal evolution brought the present authors to the conclusion that increase of number of pulses leads to decrease of melting temperature of the top layer of the substrate. It has also been confirmed that metallic ions eroded from electrodes do not undergo such acceleration like working gas ions do; their energy remains on the 200-300 eV level. It is concluded that erosion of the electrode material occurs during the last phase of the discharge via the vacuum arc mechanism.

Opis:
An attempt to synthesize superconducting MgB$\text{}_{2}$ inter-metallic compound from the liquid state is presented. The process consists of two steps. In the first one, boron ions are implanted into a magnesium substrate. In the second one, the near-surface region of such system is melted by short, intense hydrogen plasma pulses without necessity of annealing in Mg vapor. A magnetically modulated microwave absorption method was used to detect superconducting regions in the obtained MgB$\text{}_{2}$ layer. Percolation between nano-regions (islands) of MgB$\text{}_{2}$ has not been observed. However, a superconducting state of the insulated islands has been experimentally proven with transition temperatures T$\text{}_{C}$ as high as 31 K.

alfa-to-gamma phase transformation in iron
expanded austenite
intense nitrogen plasma pulses
Opis:
The paper presents the results of experiments on modification of pure iron by high-intensity nitrogen pulsed-plasma treatment. The duration of nitrogen plasma pulses is approximately 1 mi s, and the energy density amounts to about 5 J/cm2. Such pulses are capable to melt the surface layer of the substrate (1- 2 mi m) and to introduce a significant concentration of nitrogen into the molten layer. Nuclear reaction analysis (NRA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy (CEMS) were used for characterisation of the treated samples. The main results of the data analysis are as follows: it has been stated that such treatment leads to gradual transformation of initial alfa-phase into austenitic gamma structure in which expanded austenite gammaN is present. Treatment with 20 pulses results in almost complete transformation and introduces a retained dose of nitrogen estimated as 5.5 × 1017 N/cm2. The susceptibility for expansion of the lattice transformed to austenite in this way is smaller than in the case when the steel subjected to conventional nitriding is originally of austenite type. The analysis of the ratio of alfa to gammaN as a function of the nitrogen content provides a firm evidence that strong repulsion forces act between the first and the second nearest-neighbour nitrogen atoms in the fcc austenitic structure formed as a result of nitriding of pure iron by intense nitrogen plasma pulses.

The results of investigation of the polycrystalline boron implanted by magnesium and argon plasma pulse treatment are presented. The four-probe electric conductivity measurements and magnetically modulated microwave absorption showed the presence of superconducting islands below the temperature of 25 K. Below T=23 K we detected the Kondo effect, a logarithmic increase in the resistivity as the temperature is lowered, due to iron impurity.

Opis:
The results of investigation of the MgB$\text{}_{2}$ inter-metallic compound with the use of boron ions implantation and plasma pulse treatment are presented. The samples were characterized by: four-probe electric conductivity measurements, magnetically modulated microwave absorption, and magnetic measurements. For hydrogen and argon pulsed plasma treatment the samples with T$\text{}_{c}$ ranging from 10 K to 32 K were obtained. The superconducting phase does not form a continuous layer since the resistivity does not fall down to zero. Apparently, separate islands of superconducting phase are connected through metallic Mg paths. All samples are still below the percolation threshold.
