Opis:
The purpose of this article is to report a study aimed at systematic assessment of the functionality of commercially available software for the automatic generation of area cartograms. The issue of the wide choice of algorithms developed over the years for generating various types of surfaces has also been raised. Cartograms (called also anamorphic maps) are constructed by changing the surface area of each spatial unit in step with the corresponding value of the mapped thematic variable (area cartogram) or changing accordingly the distance between the preselected focal point and other points on the map (distance cartogram). Depending on the shape of mapping units, the following three types of area cartograms can be distinguished: - proportional symbol cartograms were the original shapes of mapping units have been replaced with simple geometric shapes such as squares, rectangles or circles (for example, Dorling Circle Cartograms, square cartogram); - continuous regular cartograms where the shapes of areal units on the map resemble the actual shapes of the mapped units but their boundaries have been geometrized to consist of perpendicular sections; - continuous irregular cartograms where the shapes of areal units on the map resemble the actual shapes of the mapped units but unit boundaries are not straight lines. Cartograms can also be constructed to preserve spatial contiguity (continuous cartograms) or not (noncontinuous cartograms), with the latter often preserving the underlying neighborhood relationships to some degree. While constructing area cartogram, one needs to decide first the type of a surface to be developed, and therefore, the algorithm to be applied. The next step in map construction is the choice of software, where tool selection depends often on the predetermined type of the cartogram. The study surveyed five programs for the construction of area cartograms – all available free of charge. Each of those software tools was used to generate area cartograms portraying data from the 2010 presidential election in Poland. Two groups of area cartograms where generated for the purpose of this study: maps of the entire Poland by voivodships, showing the number of valid votes cast for the two presidential candidates in each voivodship, and maps of the Mazowieckie voivodship by county, portraying the number of valid votes cast for the individual candidates in each county. The subsequent in-depth assessment of surveyed programs took into account eleven criteria including the number of cartogram types that might be developed using each program, availability of tools for the proper legend construction and display, possibility of supplementing the cartogram with complementary choropleth maps, the option for inserting map labels, the type of spatial data that can be used in the software (reference to points, lines, polygons) and so on. The study has demonstrated that the tool included in the ArcGIS (Cartogram Utility for ArcGIS) best met the survey criteria scoring 9 points. The application Scape Toad placed second (7.5 pts.), while MapViewer 7 came third (6.25 pts.). When generating cartograms in the available GIS programs, one should also pay attention to the visual qualities of the generated maps, and in particular, to the resemblance of shapes of spatial units on the map to the their actual geographic boundaries. Since the shape outlines obtained on the map vary depending on the underlying geodetic reference system, the best coordinate system for the mapped area should be selected. However, if such system cannot be used within a given cartogram generating tool, then the obtained cartogram should be exported and refined with some general software package for graphic editing.

Opis:
W artykule omówiono programy komputerowe, służące do automatycznego opracowywania kartograficznych anamorfoz powierzchniowych.

Istnieje zatem pilna potrzeba skutecznego i szybkiego sposobu likwidacji skażeń biologicznych.
Objective: The objective of this paper is to present the methods of disinfection of so-called “sensitive” surfaces, non-susceptible to decontamination processes, using gaseous hydrogen peroxide. Introduction: Technically and technologically, decontamination is a very difficult process, as decontaminated surfaces should be safe for use by people and environment after the process is completed. This concerns mainly rooms, devices, documentation and specialised equipment. Nowadays, rescue teams or military groups face a very high risk of contamination. The system of crisis response in our country has the means and technologies for decontamination using so-called wet methods (the active substance exists in the form of an aqueous solution or an organic mixture) which, however, are unfit for the decontamination of documents (paper materials), specialist equipment and electronics. Irrespective of the aid provided to those injured, the effective decontamination of materials, devices and clothing should also be carried out. This process has to be effective so that secondary contamination is prevented, and should also be able to restore the affected equipment and materials to their original state. One of the practical methods for dealing with this problem involves the application of gaseous (vaporised) hydrogen peroxide and the construction of a mobile decontamination device. Methodology: The methodology for the determination of the biocidal effect of gaseous hydrogen peroxide is based on the following standards: PN-EN 13697, PN-EN 14561, PN-EN 14562. Yeast-like fungi (Candida albicans) and mould (Aspergillus niger) were used as test substances. The impact of the decontamination process on stationery was assessed through the visual inspection of the materials and the quality of their handwriting quality or print. Document scans were compared. Conclusions: Advancements in biotechnology stimulate processes which may replace the technologies currently used as less effective and more harmful to the natural environment. Along with the increase in the number of “users” of biotechnology, genetic engineering, microbiology, molecular biology, etc., there is a greater probability that an uncontrolled release to the environment occurs or biomaterials are used for terrorist or criminal purposes. An urgent need is therefore apparent for the effective and fast eradication of bio-contaminations. The use of vaporous hydrogen peroxide appears to be a viable decontamination method for surfaces which are otherwise resistant to such processes if delivered with traditional methods. The studies revealed inter-material compatibility between stationery, varnish coatings, plastics, and electronic, optical, and optoelectronic components.

Opis:
The aim of this work was to determine selected physical properties of wheat grain which are of significance in transport, separation and storage processes as well as to assess the correlations between them and the technological properties of wheat. The grain of two wheat varieties (Eta and Banti) which are popular in Poland was used as research material. The tested properties included: vitreousness, test weight, thousand kernel weight, true density, geometric parameters (thickness, width, length), static friction coefficient of wheat kernels against steel and glass, protein and gluten content and the Zeleny sedimentation value. The grain of the investigated wheat varieties differed in most physical and technological properties. The average length, width and thickness kernels were 6.31 mm, 3.31 mm and 3.03 mm for vr. Banti and 6.05 mm, 3.33 mm, 2.97 mm for vr. Eta. The test weight ranged from 75.68 (Banti) to 78.29 kg • hl-1 (Eta), the thousand kernel weight from 36.3 (Eta) to 39.2 g (Banti) and vitreousness was from 13 (Banti) to 81% (Eta). A correlation between the physical and technological properties of wheat was found. The vitreousness of the wheat grain was positively correlated with protein content (the correlation indices were 0.58 for Banti variety and 0.67 for Eta) and the volume was positively correlated with the true density of grain (r = -0.69 Eta, r = -0.64 Banti). The static coefficient of the friction of wheat grains of two structural materials (metal or glass) is insufficient to predict its technological properties.

Opis:
This paper analyzed the effect of moisture content on selected physical properties of Astoria variety wheat grain using six levels of grain moisture content (14%, 16%, 18%, 20%, 22% and 24%). The following were determined for each level of moisture content: angle of repose, static angle of repose (SAR), bulk density and thousand kernel weight. The friction coefficients for four different construction materials (CEF) were also determined: acid-resistant steel, wear-resistant steel, plastic (PPLD) and rubber. It was found that an increasing moisture content in grains was accompanied by an increase in the thousand kernel weight, angle of repose, SAR, as well as the CEF against each of the surfaces used in the study. The highest value of the CEF was recorded for a rubber surface (0.782) and the smallest was for a polypropylene surface (0.443). The highest values of the angle of repose and the SAR were recorded for the grain with the highest moisture content: 37.15o and 39.44o, respectively. An increase in the moisture content in kernels reduced their bulk density from 79.870 kg · hl–1 (moisture content: 14%) to 68.783 kg · hl–1 (moisture content 24%).

Opis:
Introduction: Family is the basic institution providing informal care to elderly and disabled individuals. Purpose: To present care situations encountered by persons providing home care to an elder, the caregivers’ needs for support and the factors determining their satisfaction with the care they provide. Materials and methods: The study was conducted at the Geriatric Ward of the Hospital of the Ministry of Interior in Bialystok among 105 home caregivers of the elderly. A diagnostics survey was based on an original survey questionnaire and the COPE Index. Functional capacity in the elderly (N=100) was determined based on the Barthel ADL (activities' in daily living) Index and the category of nursing care (category, I-III). The analysis covered also the pressure sore risk assessment (the Norton Scale). Results: The analysis based on the Barthel ADL Index showed that over 30.0% of the elderly individuals were given up to 40 points in the nursing assessment (seriously disabled). Almost all patients – 97.0% qualified to the 3rd category of nursing care. 64.0% of the elderly had an increased risk of pressure sore development (the Norton Scale). The problems connected with providing home care listed by caregivers included the lack of time, disability of the elder and locomotion difficulties. The analysis based on the Cope Index showed a positive relationship between the caregiver’s age (r=0.216), education (r=0.196), the distance from the elder’s home (r=0.216), the quality of received support (r=0.554), and the satisfaction in the care provided. Conclusions: Caregivers reported the need for different forms of support. Higher education, longer distance from home and the quality of received support were significantly associated with higher satisfaction with caregiving.

Opis:
Fish are most often considered as a rich source of valuable fat, although sometimes the high quality of fish meat protein is also emphasized, but there is comparably little information on the mineral composition of fish meat. Chemical composition, caloric value and health safety of fish as food depend on many factors, of which the rearing conditions are most influential. Aside from environmental conditions, production technology is a major determinant of the quality and nutritional value of trout. In this study, the influence of a farming technology on the content of minerals in the muscle tissue of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum) netted in various Polish regions has been assessed. Fish were caught in autumn 2010 and 2011 and spring 2011, at 3 farms with a water flow-through system and 3 farms with water recirculation. The trout muscle tissue contained: 188.4 - 518.4 mg kg-1 of calcium, 306.9 - 338.1 mg kg-1 of magnesium, 464.0 - 718.2 mg kg-1 of sodium, 4.5 - 6.9 mg kg-1 of zinc, 2485.7 - 2823.6 mg kg-1 of phosphorous, 4261.2 - 4615.4 mg kg-1 of potassium, 3.0 - 9.4 mg kg-1 of iron and 0.09 – 11.74 mg kg-1 of copper. The farming technology influenced the content of calcium, sodium, zinc, iron and copper but had no effect on the content of magnesium, phosphorous and potassium in rainbow trout muscle tissue. Trout farmed in water recirculation systems contained higher amounts of most elements than the fish reared in water flow-through systems. The season of sample collection (date of netting) also affected the content of sodium, zinc, phosphorus, iron and copper. The fish farming site (localization of the farm) determined the content of most of the minerals except magnesium. Rainbow trout is a good source of phosphorous and potassium in a human diet, significantly covering the daily demand for the elements.
