Opis:
The present study was designed to assess phytostabilization strategies for the treatment of soil co-contaminated by increasing levels of copper with the application mineral amendments (chalcedonite, zeolite, dolomite). From the results it will be possible to further elucidate the benefits or potential risks derived from the application of different types of mineral amendments in the remediation of a copper contaminated soil. A glasshouse pot experiment was designed to evaluate the potential use of different amendments as immobilizing agents in the aided phytostabilization of Cu-contaminated soil using ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). The content of trace elements in plants and total in soil, were determined using the method of spectrophotometry. All of the investigated element contents in the tested parts of L. perenne were significantly different in the case of applying mineral amendments to the soil, as well as increasing concentrations of copper. The greatest average above-ground biomass was observed for soil amended with chalcedonite. In this experiment, all analyzed metals accumulated predominantly in the roots of the tested plant. In general, applying mineral amendments to soil contributed to decreased levels of copper concentrations.
Niniejsze badania zostały przeprowadzone w celu oceny procesu wspomaganej fitostabilizacji gleby zanieczyszczonej wzrastającymi dawkami miedzi przy zastosowaniu dodatków mineralnych (chalcedonit, zeolit, dolomit). Największy przyrost biomasy zaobserwowano w przypadku dodatku do gleby chalcedonitu. W przeprowadzonym eksperymencie miedź gromadziła się głównie w korzeniach rośliny testowej. Zastosowanie dodatków mineralnych miało tendencję do zmniejszania całkowitej zawartości miedzi w glebie, w porównaniu do kontroli.

Opis:
The short-term effect of aided phytostabilization of heavy metalcontaminated soil on microorganisms under outdoor field conditions was tested. Heavy metal contaminated soil from a mining site was amended with lignite, lime and two commercial fertilizers and vegetated with grass Festuca arundinacea. Results demonstrated that the amended phytostabilization approach of Pb-Cd contaminated soil gave a positive change on the native microbial populations evaluated by culturable techniques during the first 28 weeks of the experimental period. In the end of the experiment, the number of bacteria, actinomycetes and fungi increased in treated soil about 16-fold, 10-fold and 2-fold, respectively. Changes in the biodiversity of bacterial populations were evaluated by the Ecophysiological Index (EP) and the Colony Development Index (CD) for oligotrophs and copiotrophs. During the experimental period slower growing microorganisms (K-strategists) predominated. The application of amendments to the soil led to an increase of the CD index in both copiotroph and oligotroph populations after 28 weeks. EP, CD, bacteria, actinomycetes and fungi increased in the treated soil. Traditional microbiological methods based on culture techniques can be used to evaluate the biological quality of the phytostabilized heavy metal-contaminated soil.

Opis:
A laboratory experiment lasting for 90 days was conducted to examine the interaction between a remediation plant, Gossypium hirsutum, and the petroleum contaminated soil. Root indices and 9 various types of soil enzymatic activities in two separate groups were determined. Results showed that compared to the uncontaminated control, the growth of cotton roots was slightly strengthened at the pollution level of 1000 mg-kg-1, while seriously inhibited at the pollution level of 2000 mg-kg-1 and 4000 mg-kg-1. At the same pollution level, all studied soil enzymatic activities except alkaline phosphatase were markedly higher in the group with plants than in the group without plants which may indicate that the content of nutrients essential for plant growth as well as the activities of microorganisms capable of degrading contaminants were both enhanced in soils planted with cotton, therefore conducive to the increase of the overall fertility level and the degradation of pollutants in the petroleum contaminated soil.

Opis:
Suitability of various substrates for anaerobic biodegradation of DDT in contaminated soil was tested in lab-scale tests with granular sludge inoculation. Use of carbohydrate-based substances such as starch, sucrose, molasses and whey resulted in acidification, which in extreme cases inhibited DDT removal. A large amount of phosphate buffer prevented pH drop for starch, but not for sucrose. Better results were obtained with calcium carbonate as a buffering agent, which also had little effect on soil salinity. Very good effectiveness of biodegradation was achieved using sodium lactate which, however, caused alkalinisation of the soil, perhaps due to accumulation of sodium carbonate. Alkalinisation did not occur when calcium lactate was used instead. Experiments also demonstrated that Tween 80 surfactant could be successfully used as a substrate, without experiencing problems with pH control.

Opis:
The study was conducted on three specially prepared test areas along main streets of Bialystok. The experimental plots were sown with two lawn grass mixtures: Eko and Roadside, and three doses of sewage sludge 0.0 (control), 7.5 kg/m2 and 15.0 kg/m2 were used. The calculated bioconcentration factor made possible to determine the mobility of the various metals from the soil solution to the aerial parts of plants. The obtained results showed that the plants absorbed Cd, Zn, Cu easier than Pb and Ni suggesting a high mobility, in particular of Cd, Zn, Cu, and reflects the easiness extraction of those metals by plants. Significant correlations between concentrations of metals in soil and grass were observed, nickel in soil was significantly correlated with Cd, Zn and Cu in plants, while the Zn content in soil with the level of Cu in plants.

Opis:
The study deals with the removal of residual contaminants Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) from soil using surfactants sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate, and Triton x-100. Surfactants were used with and without chelating agent ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). SDS (10 mM) was the most effective surfactant for removing metals. Replacing distilled water with SDS enhanced metal removal by the factor of 5.5, 28.8, and 29.1 for Cu(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II), respectively. SDS with EDTA was efficient in removing metals. Interaction of metal ions with respect to adsorption and desorption were also studied.
