The results of studies presented in this article are an example of the research activity of the authors related to lead-free alloys. The studies covered binary SnZn90 and SnZn95 lead-free alloys, including their microstructure and complex mechanical characteristics. The microstructure was examined by both light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The identification of alloy chemical composition in micro-areas was performed by SEM/EDS method. As regards light microscopy, the assessment was of both qualitative and quantitative character. The determination of the geometrical parameters of microstructure was based on an original combinatorial method using phase quantum theory. Comprehensive characterization of mechanical behavior with a focus on fatigue life of alloys was performed by means of the original modified low cycle fatigue method (MLCF) adapted to the actually available test machine. The article discusses the fatigue life of binary SnZn90 and SnZn95 alloys in terms of their microstructure. Additionally, the benefits resulting from the use of the combinatorial method in microstructure examinations and MLCF test in the quick estimation of several mechanical parameters have been underlined.

The work presents the results of process efficiency of refining liquid copper with special refining agents and the analysis results of the influence of alloying components on the structure and properties of the chosen alloys. The research undertaken aimed at evaluation of the influence of alloying additives, such as aluminium, silicon and also cobalt in the chosen Cu-Zn alloys. The microstructures were researched with the help of light and scanning microscopy together with X-ray microanalysis to determine significant changes of mechanical properties.

The results of experimental study of mechanical properties degradation of creep resistant Ni-base alloy are presented. The material studied was subjected to long-term influence of high pressure hydrogen atmosphere at temperature 750K and 850K. The mechanical properties of specimens taken at different distance from inner surface of thick wall tube were evaluated. The results of mechanical testing showed distinct influence of the temperature on mechanical properties of Ni creep resistant alloy. Moreover, the mechanical properties of studied alloy depend on the location of the specimen with respect to the dissociated ammonia source i.e. distance from the inner surface of the chamber. The results of mechanical testing show that the higher the distance from inner surface of the chamber the better mechanical properties of studied Ni base super-alloy.

The aim of this paper was to determine the effect of heat treatment for the corrosion resistance of the ZnAl40Ti2Cu alloy under “acid rain” conditions. ZnAl40TiCu alloy after supersaturation and after supersaturation and aging was studied. Potentiodynamic studies, potentiostatic studies and studies on structure of the alloy top layer of samples after corrosion tests were carried out. These investigations indicated a significant influence of heat treatment on corrosion resistance of the ZnAl40Ti2Cu alloy. The highest increase in corrosion resistance comparing to the alloy in the as-cast condition may be obtained by supersaturation. A significant influence of the aging temperature and time on corrosion resistance was proved.

Żeliwo wysokochromowe jest powszechnie stosowanym materiałem w przemyśle górniczym i mineralnym, gdzie wymagana jest duża odporność na zużycie ścierne. Swoje dobre właściwości zawdzięcza obecności w mikrostrukturze twardych węglików. Żeliwo chromowe poddawane hartowaniu ma w praktyce osnowę austenityczną, austenityczno-perlityczną lub perlityczną. Istotnym procesem w czasie obróbki cieplnej jest tzw. destabilizacja austenitu, jest on ważny ponieważ dopiero po jego zajściu może nastąpić przemiana martenzytyczna. W zależności od szybkości chłodzenia, które następuje po procesie destabilizacji austenitu, może powstać perlit, bainit i martenzyt. Przeprowadzone badania dotyczyły określenia wpływu szybkości chłodzenia odlewów z żeliwa wysokochromowego po obróbce cieplnej, na mikrostrukturę i twardość. Badaniu zostało poddane żeliwo wysokochromowe o zawartości 27%Cr i 2,7%C. Przeprowadzono zabieg hartowania z temperatury 950 °C w czasie 4h, następnie odlewy poddano trzem wariantom chłodzenia – w wodzie, w kąpieli solnej i na powietrzu. Zbadano i porównano mikrostrukturę oraz twardość odlewów dla różnych wariantów chłodzenia.
High Chromium Cast Iron (HCCI) is widely use in mining and mineral industry, where abrasive resistance is a principal requirement. Its good properties thanks to the hard eutectic carbides occurring in the microstructure. The effect of heat treatment on HCCI was a subject of many research. High Chromium Cast Iron have an austenitic, austenitic-pearlitic or pearlitic matrix. An important process during the heat treatment is austenite destabilization, thus until after it conduct the martensitic transformation can occur. Depending on the cooling rate that follows the process of destabilization of austenite, perlite, bainite and martensite may form. The present work, aimed at studying the influence of cooling rate after heat treatment, on the microstructure and hardness. The study were carry out on samples of High Chromium Cast Iron containing 27%Cr i 2,7%C. Samples were subjected to the tempering treatment at the temperature of 950°C for 4 hours and three variants of cooling – in water, in a salt bath and on air. Examined and compared the microstructure and hardness of castings for different variants of cooling.

Microstructure change of the metals and alloys as a result of variable crystallisation conditions also by mind of cooling rate change influence the mechanical properties. In this work there are presented the interdependences between the cooling rate, chemical composition and microstructure of the cast aluminium alloy Al–Si–Cu as a result of the thermo-derivative analysis, using the UMSA (Universal Metallurgical Simulator and Analyzer) device. An important tool for the microstructure evaluation of the Al type AC-AlSi7Cu3Mg alloy was the light and electron scanning microscopy technique.

The effect of heat treatment of the plastically worked 7000 series Al-Zn-Mg aluminium alloy system on its stress-corrosion resistance is examined. For the same chemical constitution, the effect of heat treatment on mechanical and corrosion properties of Al-Zn-Mg alloys systems is remarkable. It was proved that a parameter having significant effect on corrosion properties of the alloy is the rate of alloy cooling after heat treatment. This conclusion is confirmed by observation of structural forms which fully reflect mechanical and corrosion properties of the alloy.

The Mg-RE alloys are attractive, constructional materials, especially for aircraft and automotive industry, thanks to combination of low density, good mechanical properties, also at elevated temperature, and good castability and machinability. Present paper contains results of fatigue resistance test carried out on Elektron 21 magnesium alloy, followed by microstructural and fractographical investigation of material after test. The as-cast material has been heat treated according to two different procedures. The fatigue resistance test has been conducted with 106 cycles of uniaxial, sine wave form stress between 9 MPa and 90 MPa. Fractures of specimens, which ruptured during the test, have been investigated with scanning electron microscope. The microstructure of specimens has been investigated with light microscopy. Detrimental effect of casting defects, as inclusions and porosity, on fatigue resistance has been proved. Also the influence of heat treatment's parameters has been described.

The article examines the impact of changes in homogenization temperature in the hardening process on the microstructure of aluminum alloys. The research samples were cast from AlSi10CuNiMn alloy produced by gravity casting technology in metal mold. Subsequently, the castings were subjected to a heat treatment. In an experiment with changing temperature and staying time in the process of homogenization. The microstructure of the alloy was investigated by methods of light and electron microscopy. Examination of the microstructure has focused on changing the morphology of separated particles of eutectic silicon and intermetallic phases. The analysis of intermetallic phases was supplemented by an analysis of the chemical composition – EDS analysis. Effect of heat treatment on the properties investigated alloy was further complemented by Vickers microhardness. Investigated alloy is the result of longtime research conducted at the Faculty of Production Technology and Management.

Heat treatment is the most suitable technique for altering the microstructure and, consequently, it is possible to create the optimal balance of corrosion resistance and mechanical strength in a material by carefully regulating the conditions during the heating process. The present work aims to investigate the effect of heat treatments (annealing) at (300°C) at different times (10, 20, and 30 hr) on the magnesium alloy. How the Mg17Al12 phase influences the corrosion behavior of AZ91D magnesium alloy was quantified in different solution (SBF, Lactic and Ringer). It was able to construct an extensive range of Mg17Al12 phase volume fractions by varying the annealing period. The corrosion potential of many specimens with varied proportions of the Mg17Al12 phase was evaluated. The results of the conducted tests manifested that the material's resistance to corrosion greatly improved with an increase in the volume fraction of Mg17Al12 phase. The effect of heat treatment on the microstructure was analyzed using transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The SEM photographs evinced that the amount of β-Mg17Al12 phase decreased significantly, with the distribution occurring at the grain boundaries and with increasing the time of annealing, resulting in a highly saturated α-grain. The XRD validated the all material peaks of phases that are present. The corrosion test behavior of AZ91 alloy in the simulated body fluid (SBF), lactic, and Ringer solutions was investigated through electrochemical measurements, the result was elucidated as measured along the Tafel slope, and the corrosion current density of all heat treated samples was lower than that of the as-cast sample. The measurement of hardness (HV) demonstrated that the hardness decreased to (64.5 HV0.5) during the heat treatment. The result antibacterial efficiency was revealed that AZ91 at 30 hr was best then as cast against the bacteria E.coli.

The silumins are the aluminum alloys with the silicon as the main alloy addition. These are one of the most common types of casting alloys based on aluminum. They are widely used in technologies of casting such as sand casting, chill casting or pressure die casting. As their main characteristics we can include: very good castabillity, corrosion resistance, high mechanical properties and good thermal and electrical conductivity. Thanks to all these properties, the cast aluminum alloys have been used in various industries such as: automotive, engineering, heat exchangers or conductive elements. The last application requires a specific conditions of the process and the optimal chemical composition of the alloy, which allows to obtain high values of conductivity. The paper presents a study covering the impact of silicon content and heat treatment parameters on the electrical conductivity and mechanical properties (hardness HB) hypoeutetic silumin alloys such as AlSi11Mg, AlSi7Mg and AlSi5Mg. The aim of the study was to determine the optimal conditions for heat treatment parameters of various alloys providing to the most favorable mechanical and electrical properties.
Siluminy, czyli stopy aluminium z głównym dodatkiem w postaci krzemu, są jednymi z najczęściej stosowanych typów stopów odlewniczych na bazie aluminium. Są one wykorzystywane w szeregu technologiach odlewniczych takich jak: odlewanie piaskowe, kokilowe czy odlewanie nisko lub wysoko ciśnieniowe. Do podstawowych własności tej grupy stopów możemy zaliczyć bardzo dobrą lejność, odporność na działanie środowiska korozyjnego, wysokie własności mechaniczne oraz dobrą przewodność cieplną i elektryczną. Dzięki tym własnościom, główne zastosowanie odlewów z siluminów to przemysł samochodowy, maszynowy, elementy konstrukcyjne, wymienniki ciepła czy elementy przewodzące prąd elektryczny. Ta ostatnia aplikacja wymaga zapewnienia szczególnych warunków procesu technologicznego oraz odpowiedniego składu chemicznego stopu, tak aby uzyskać wysokie wartości przewodnictwa. W pracy przedstawiono badania obejmujące wpływ zawartości krzemu oraz parametrów obróbki cieplnej na przewodność elektryczną i własności mechaniczne (twardość HB) siluminów podeutektycznych typu AlSi11Mg, AlSi7Mg oraz AlSi5Mg. Celem badań było określenie optymalnych warunków obróbki cieplnej poszczególnych stopów umożliwiających uzyskanie najkorzystniejszych własności mechanicznych i elektrycznych.

In the dissertation it has been shown, that so called „time-thermal treatment” (TTT) of the alloy in liquid state, as overheating the metal with around 250°C above the Tliq. and detaining it in this temperature for around 30 minutes, improves the mechanical properties (HB, Rm, R0,2). It was ascertained, that overheating the AlSi17Cu5Mg alloy aids the modification, resulting with microcrystalline structure. Uniform arrangement of the Si primeval crystals in the warp, and α(Al) solution type, supersaturated with alloying elements present in the base content (Cu, Mg) assures not only increased durability in the ambient temperature, but also at elevated temperature (250°C), what is an advantage, especially due to the use in car industry.

In recent years, improvement of casting magnesium alloys welding technology has resulted in an increase in the number of publications on this topic. The symptom of this trend is to replace traditional construction materials of magnesium alloys. Magnesium alloys of Mg-Zn-RE-Zr group are used in the automotive, aerospace and defense industries, mainly as gravitional casts to sand moulds or die-casting. Casting defects often appear in these casts (misruns, micro-shrinkage, cracks). The welding technologies are most often applicable to repair of casts, mainly nonconsumable electrode welding in the inert gas cover. The premise of this research work was to define structure and mechanical properties of welded joints of magnesium alloy EZ33A-T5. For this purpose, were attempted trails welding and conducted non-destructive testing, metallographic and strength mechanical tests allowing to assess the properties of welded joints. Evaluation of properties of welded joints was possible by carrying out welding trials and execution of non-destructive tests and metallographic. Research of the microstructure was used with the methodology and test procedures for the quantitative evaluation of the structure of welded joints which was developed in the Department of Materials Science of Silesian University of Technology.

The influence of solution heat treatment at 385°C over 10 h with cooling in water on the structure, hardness and strength of the ZnAl22Cu3 eutectoid alloy is presented in the paper. The eutectoid ZnAl22Cu3 alloy is characterized by a dendritic structure. Dendrites are composed of a supersaturated solid solution of Al in Zn. In the interdendritic spaces a eutectoid mixture is present, with an absence of the ε (CuZn4) phase. Solution heat treatment of the ZnAl22Cu3 alloy causes the occurrence of precipitates rich in Zn and Cu, possibly ε phase. Solution heat treatment at 385°C initially causes a significant decrease of the alloy hardness, although longer solution heat treatment causes a significant increase of the hardness as compared to the as-cast alloy.

Opis:
Modification of alloys is an important part of the metallurgical process, and this also applies to aluminum alloys, particularly for Al-Si (silumins). As a modification of the material we can utilise the modification using the selected element or heat treatment of alloys, or a combination of both processes. One of the elements that it is possible to modify the alloy of Al-Si used is antimony (Sb). The paper examines the possible effect of the modification of that element and heat treatment on the final structure of the alloy AlSi9CuMnNi and other selected properties after machining. In the experiments three castings from the alloy AlSi9CuMnNi were made without modification, three castings with the modification and without heat treatment, three castings with modification and without heat treatment, and three castings with modification and heat treatment. The described experiment and analysis are part of extensive research undertaken at Faculty of Production Technology and Management, J. E. Purkyně University in Ústínad Labem.
