Opis:
This work presents electrophoretic seed globulin data obtained for 173 accessions representing nine Vicia species of the section Faba, which were already investigated for electrophoretic seed albumin patterns (PRZYBYLSKA, ZIMNIAK-PRZYBYLSKA, in press). Electrophoretic analysis of seed globulins was performed using sodium dodecyl sulphate - polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). In the examined material totally 38 well-defined polypeptide bands, in the relative molecular mass range of 19-61 kDa, were distinguished. The presence/absence of particular bands was recorded for each analysed individual. The electrophoretic data were used for hierarchical grouping of the examined taxa, based on calculated Bhattacharyya distances. V. bithynica proved to be the most distinctive member of Vicia section Faba. In turn, V. faba was clearly different from species of the V. narbonensis complex. Taxa of this complex formed two clusters: one consisting of V. narbonensis varieties and another - of the remaining species. In the latter group, V. serratifolia appeared to be rather distantly related to V. eristalioides, V. galilaea, V. hyaeniscyamus, V. Johannis and V. kalakhensis. The obtained results are compared with the corresponding seed albumin data and discussed with reference to taxonomie relationships in Vicia section Faba.

Opis:
Populus is a genus that contains numerous taxa that are often difficult to identify. They are grouped into six sections which are mainly based on the differences in the structure of flowers and leaves. Nevertheless, other features are also of great importance in identifying individual sections. In this paper, individual sections are characterized. Two subsections within the Populus section (syn. Leuce Duby) are distinguished, due to the clear differences between white poplars and aspens. The sections are as follows: sect. 1. Abaso Eckenw. (mexican poplar), sect. 2. Turanga Bunge (arid and tropical poplars), sect. 3. Leucoides Spach (bigleaf poplars), sect. 4. Aigeiros Duby (cottonwoods and black poplar), sect. 5. Tacamahaca Spach (balsam poplars), sect. 6. Populus, with two subsections: 6a. Populus (white poplars) and 6b. Trepidae (Dode) Tamm (aspens).

Opis:
Although intraspecies researches within the black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold) have a long tradition, the intraspecies taxonomy, classification and chorology are still unclear. Among the numerous reasons that have caused this situation the most important are: the absence of a study that would completely cover the whole range of this species, the impossibility of connection of results of the existing detailed studies of certain areas, and the high variability of traits which have been used so far. Since the characteristics of the molecular systematic techniques could make possible the research free of the mentioned shortages, the intention of this study was to determine the relationships among nine populations of black pine using the random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). The obtained results were compared to the recent results of the morphological and anatomical analysis of the leaves of the same populations. The RAPD results clearly divided the Croatian populations from populations of Austria (subsp. nigra) and Turkey (subsp. pallasiana), while among Croatian populations, as in previous study, the existence of several groups (subsp. illyrica, subsp. dalmatica and transitional population between them) was noticed. It is assumed that the optimisations conducted in this study will finally make possible estimating the relationships on the level of the whole range of the black pine and the classification based on molecular traits that are probably less dependent on environmental influences than it has been the case with the characteristics mostly used so far.

Opis:
The field of physical (activity) and health education, or whatever it is called in any one of the world’s countries, has undergone a “determined” but often “confused” development in the 20th century. After Sputnik went up in 1957, the field sought help from a variety of disciplines (e.g., kinesiology) and professions (e.g., management) in an attempt to truly define itself. Building on what Arthur Steinhaus (George Williams College) stated were its four “principal principles” in the early 1950s, the author asserts that some 14 “principal principles” of the field can now be affirmed. Searching for consensus, a proposed taxonomy for “developmental physical activity in exercise, sport, and physical recreation” is offered here for consideration as the field moves along in the 21st century. The author argues that the field also needs to make available to the professional practitioner a computerized inventory of generalizations that represents a distillation of the field’s scientific and scholarly literature.

This study describes the megaspore assemblages from the Ryabinsk Member of the Vokhma Formation of the Moscow Syneclise. The genus Otynisporites is emended, three new species, Maexisporites meditectatus, M. rugulaeferus and Otynisporites maculosus, are erected, and one new combination, Maexisporites grosstriletus, is proposed. Megaspore descriptions relate the gross morphology and fine structure of the exine surface of thirteen taxa. From the appearance of the exine surface and ornamentation processes, it appears that some forms currently included in certain genera according to their morphological features do not belong to them. The assemblage from Sholga is evidently of low diversity at the generic level, possibly reflecting the end-Permian biotic crisis. The composition of the megaspore assemblages indicates their Induan age.megaspores taxonomy palynostratigraphy Triassic Induan Russia

This is the first Paratethyan record of a minute scallop species Parvamussium fenestratum (Forbes, 1844). The species was found in Middle Miocene (Upper Badenian) clayey deposits in the Surzha borehole, the Ukrainian Carpathian Foredeep Basin. Examination of other Parvamussium specimens stored in the Museum of the Earth in Warsaw and in the Hungarian Natural History Museum in Budapest revealed further Paratethyan records of Parvamussium fenestratum. These specimens, previously referred to Parvamussium felsineum (Foresti, 1893), were identified in the Middle Miocene faunas of Poland (Monastyrz and Długi Goraj, Roztocze Hills) and Hungary (Makkoshotyka, Tokaj Mts.). In the Mediterranean Neogene this extremely rare species has been reported from the Lower Miocene (uppermost Burdigalian) of Italy and from the Lower Pliocene (Zanclean) of Spain. Research on the Oligocene-Miocene succession in the Paratethys has shown representatives of Parvamussium Sacco, 1897 to be moderately abundant in clayey facies in different basins and the genus is regarded as biostratigraphically important. Data on the distribution of other Paratethyan and Neogene Mediterranean Parvamussium species viz., Parvamussium bronni (Mayer, 1861), P. duodecimlamellatum (Bronn, 1831), P. felsineum (Foresti, 1893) and P. miopliocenicum (Ruggieri, 1949) are reported. Finally, palaeobiological and palaeobiogeographical characteristics on the genus Parvamussium Sacco, 1897 the Early Cretaceous to Recent time span are described.

Opis:
Revision of the Silesian bear fauna, based on material from 152 sites, mainly cave and karstic localities, and also archaeological and open-air sites, shows the presence of 13 forms and species. These records encompass the last 16.5 Ma and may be divided into five main morphophyletic groups. The oldest bears, represented by the genera Ballusia and Ursavus, are dated to 16.5-11 Ma, and belonged to the stem forms of the subfamily Ursinae. After a break of 6 My, the earliest members of the genus Ursus appeared, and all known Pliocene bears in Silesia belong to the genus Ursus were identified as Ursus minimus. They represent one or two migration events. Additionally, between 3.6 and 3.2 Ma, a single occurence of Agriotherium insigne was recorded from the Węże 1 site. A few Early Pleistocene bear records are represented by U. etruscus, which was a probable ancestor of both arctoid and spelaeoid bear lineages. The oldest representative of Ursus ex gr. arctos known so far and assigned to U. a. suessenbornensis is known from one latest Early Pleistocene (1.2-0.9 Ma) locality, while other Polish records of this form require confirmation. The first occurrence of U. deningeri, the oldest taxon within the U. ex gr. deningeri-spelaeus lineage, was recorded from ~700 ka deposits in Silesia. During the pronounced cold period of MIS 12, the Scandinavian ice sheet covered almost the entire modern territory of Poland, with the exception of the Sudetes and the Carpathians. The accompanying drastic faunal turnover led to the formation of the pan-Eurasian Mammoth Fauna at ~460 ka. At that time a characteristic member of this fauna, the steppe brown bear Ursus arctos priscus, a specific ecomorph adapted to live in open grasslands, appeared in this region. It survived until the beginning of MIS 1, when modern Ursus arctos arctos appeared in Silesia and survived to the present day. U. deningeri was the most common bear during the Middle Pleistocene, while the first records of U. spelaeus spelaeus appeared since MIS 7. The latter form was replaced by U. ingressus during the Late Pleistocene (~110-100 ka). Spelaeoid bears totally dominated the cave assemblage, and finally vanished between 27 and 24 ka.
