Opis:
This paper presents the attempt of sustainable development assessment for one of the poorest regions of the European Union (EU), Lublin Voivodeship in Poland, during its first decade in the EU, i.e. 2004-2013. Our analyses, performed for all pillars of sustainability: social, economic and environmental-technical, were based on sustainable development indicators (SDIs). The set of 21 sustainable development indicators, based on freely available statistical data, was proposed in this paper. The SDIs for Lublin Voivodeship were compared to values for Poland and the European Union. The special attention was put to assessment of sustainable development diversification between urbanized and rural areas of Poland and Lublin province. Our analyses showed than both, Poland and Lublin Voivodeship, clearly developed during the last decade but their sustainable development is still endangered and slowed down by several causes. Moreover, the value of most tested sustainability indicators was significantly below the European mean.

Opis:
Sustainable development has undergone an important evolution over recent years. It has been used not only as a tool to decide among several options in research programs but also in political decisions. However, how can we measure if something is sustainable or not? It seems that Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is the most powerful technique to objectively describe and determine the sustainability of a new project, idea, change in established lines, etc. However, some important aspects are lacking today in LCA, for instance, experimental data on environmental impact related to emission factors. In sustainable development, global warming is presented today as the major reason to carry out sustainability studies. Although global warming is, of course, an important reason for attaining sustainability, it is not the only reason. In this work, relevant aspects related to two important topics involved in modern sustainable development, sustainable tourism and waste management are briefly introduced.

Opis:
Investments towards sustainable development are vital for the future and they must be carefully planned to deliver immediate and long-term benefits. Hence, the ability to communicate the forms of impact of sustainable investments to local societies, people, investors and other stakeholders can provide a competitive advantage. However, the assessments are often under pressure to demonstrate short-term effects rather than emphasise the long-term impact. In addition, indirect and intangible forms of impacts should not be measured solely in economic terms. This paper proposes an assessment framework to support the integrated economic and social impact assessment of sustainable investments aimed at improving physical and socio-economic wellbeing. The framework is demonstrated in two case studies: new construction and renovation investments in affordable housing and social impact investment in sustainable development. The investments in the case studies are evaluated, selected and prioritized not only in terms of money but also with regard to sustainability, social acceptability and their overall impact on society, as a whole. The results indicate that a systematic integrated assessment of monetary and non-monetary factors can be successfully combined with the sustainable development decisions.

One of the forms of providing information on sustainable development is education on the primary, secondary and university level. It is therefore important how well and how deep the term „sustainable development” is known and whether it is correctly understood by the students. The research results indicate that there are differences among university students concerning the knowledge of the topic while the graduates of the secondary schools, despite the fact that they learnt this term, do not fully understand it.

W artykule podjęto próbę dokonania przeglądu wybranych metod oceny bioróżnorodności na poziomie gatunkowym i ekosystemowym oraz przedstawiono niektóre metody oceny bioróżnorodności na poziomie krajowym, międzynarodowym i globalnym.
Biodiversity is usually discussed on three levels: of genetics, of species and ecosystems. Biodiversity may be evaluated as an economic, biological, ethical or social good as well. One of main principles of the sustainable development is preserving biodiversity. To achieve this goal, biodiversity monitoring, evaluation and its protection are crucial. Biodiversity is not easy to assess in spite of many attempts. Usually the presence of chosen species, ecosystems (forest, field, water etc.), landscapes (in the case of regions) or protected areas including Natura 2000 (at national level) are used as indicators of biodiversity. According to the Eurostat, biodiversity is assessed by bioindicators such as: chosen birds, fish species and protected areas. Some other methods of biodiversity assessment are also used, from local level (biological site, like forests) to global one (for example indicators used by WWF). These methods are mainly qualitative, but some authors try to estimate costs of biodiversity loss or preservation. The main aim of the paper is an attempt to present chosen indicator methods and measures of biodiversity assessment (at different levels).

“One planet, one main goal: good life for all”: it could be a motto of sustainable world. Sustainability is global mega trend in all fields of life to promote prosperity protecting our planet. Sustainable development is a requirement and a priority for all people all over the world. It is defined as development of the current world with a view to the future generations. In 2015, the UN Member States established Agenda 2030, including seventeen “Sustainable Development Goals”, SDG, which should be realized by 2030. Objectives scope all areas of life, namely quality of human life, ecosystem, world peace or partnerships. Each goal has an environmental context. According to the “United Nations Environment Program” (UNEP), Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a perfect method in the context of the environmental dimensions of the SDGs. The concept not only concerns the effects of the process/production system or the product/service but also all stages of its life (from cradle to grave), considering the carbon, environmental, consumer or biodiversity footprints. LCA is the only comprehensive eco-innovation indicator and policy implementation technique of sustainable development in companies in terms of eco-efficiency and eco-products. This mini review provides a survey of the current state of knowledge on sustainability and sustainable development as well as the relevance of new holistic methodology bridging SDGs with LCA, on the base of the newest scientific worldwide literature.

The article presents results of a study of how immovable cultural heritage used for commercial purposes of tourism affects local communities. The study is based on data collected in direct interviews with property owners and representatives of local authorities and a questionnaire survey of local residents concerning sixteen historic buildings used as hotels, which are located in rural areas of Wielkopolskie province. It was found that the provision of additional, free cultural functions for local communities by property owners and/or local authorities exerts a greater socio-cultural impact and contributes to local, sustainable development. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that when historic buildings of this kind are used for commercial purposes it is important to ensure that they are part of the cultural experience not only for hotel guests but also for the local community. In this way, entire communities can appreciate their local cultural heritage (socio-cultural impact), which in turn strengthens cultural sustainability.

Opis:
Research background: Sustainable development is the agenda for many countries including Ukraine, which adopted it at the national level and promoted through its regions. As the country is constantly struggling with the results of the military conflict and the impact of the occupation of its part by separatists, which led to economic decrease and emergence of numerous social and environmental issues, the transition of Ukraine to sustainable development path becomes especially important. At the same time, there is no official methodology adopted by the Ukrainian government, how to assess sustainable development of its regions. Availability of objective assessments would contribute to development of the relevant policy recommendations. Purpose of the article: The purpose of the article is to assess sustainable development of the regions in Ukraine and to show the dynamics of performance of the regions before and after the beginning of the military conflict in the East of Ukraine. Methods: We suggest the methodology of calculation of the integral index of sustainable development of the regions in Ukraine. This methodology takes into account the three pillars of sustainable development concept (economic, social and environmental) and uses the data available for all Ukrainian regions from the official statistics source. In order to determine the position of individual regions in the development of the Ukrainian economy and to identify certain groups of regions according to their level of sustainable development, we apply the method of statistical grouping. Findings & Value added: The conducted analyses showed the dynamics of indicators of sustainable development of the Ukrainian regions, the performance of the regions and their affiliation to the corresponding attributive groups. The situation and interrelation of the regions in Ukraine totally changed after the beginning of the military conflict in the East of Ukraine. The Luhansk and Donetsk regions, which are directly affected by the military conflict, became the outsiders among other regions in Ukraine, though before the conflict the values of sustainable development indicators had been above the average values in Ukraine. The leaders among the regions also changed, and the difference between the leaders and the following groups became significant. The results of the analyses allowed to visualize the dynamics of sustainable development of the regions in Ukraine and define the key directions for future development.

Zrównoważony i trwały rozwój (sustainable development) został zdefiniowany jako odpowiedź na degradację środowiska przyrodniczego. Należy go rozpatrywać w równie istotnych trzech aspektach: zrównoważonego rozwoju ekologicznego (np. zmniejszenie zanieczyszczenia środowiska), zrównoważonego rozwoju ekonomicznego (np. zmiana nierozsądnych postaw konsumentów), oraz zrównoważonego rozwoju społecznego (m.in. walka z ubóstwem i niedożywieniem).
Sustainable development was defined as an answer to natural environment degradation. It should be considered in three equally important domains - sustainability of environmental development (e.g. decreasing of environment pollution), sustainability of economical development (e.g. changing irresponsible habits of consumers) an sustainability of development of societies (fighting poverty and hunger). To spread the concept UNESCO announced the document: "Decade of Education for SD" (2005-2014). The aim of this article is to popularize the vision, aim, and strategy of the Decade and to present the author's own research about the familiarity with the term 'sustainable development' in various groups of society.

Manufacturing techniques are concerned with quality, cost, productivity and sustainability. With today's environmental awareness and the pressure of the sustainability requirements, existing manufacturing techniques of heating devices are evolving into the redesign manufacturing unit processes to increase overall sustainability. Also, these techniques need a measurement method to assess processes-related sustainability performance indicators. The purpose of this paper is to stress the role of manufacturing techniques: welding, cleaning and painting in the manufacture of heating appliances (solid fuel fired boilers used renewable energy sources) in terms of incorporating into the field the concept of sustainable development. It then focuses on the environmental, technical, economical and social impact of sustainable technologies and argues for the need to ensure that the concept is being applied to the manufacture of heating devices. In this paper, author tries to propose a unified, standard scientific factory-level methodology to evaluate the influence of manufacturing techniques on the sustainability of enterprises producing heating devices. The proposed methodology in the terms of the case study is a comprehensive answer to the question of to what extent the improvements in those techniques influence the sustainable development of the enterprises. An industrial case study demonstrates that the proposed improvements can effectively influence the sustainability of enterprise. The results of this assessment can be applied to broad industry sectors, and can lead to the accepted measures and practices.
