Opis:
The efficiency of a system based on porous tubes in maintaining soil water potential during water extraction by plants in growth chamber experiment was evaluated. The effect of porous tubes area, soil type and density on water flow through porous tubes as induced by various water potentials was evaluated. The rate of change of soil water potential in response to pressure change depends strongly on the area of ceramic tubes per soil volume. If rapid changes or precise control of soil water potential are needed, the area of ceramic tubes per soil volume should be large. Experiments in which porous tubes are used for maintaining water potential should reach a compromise between plant water demands and permissible disturbance caused by the presence of porous tubes in the soil environment.

Opis:
The object of this study was to determine change of natural buffer capacity of humic acids by strong buffering agents, which were phosphate ions. Studies were carried out on the humic acids extracted from peat soils. Additional information was obtained by determination of water holding capacity, density, ash and pH for peats and optical parameterQ4/6 for humic acids. Humic acid suspensions exhibited the highest buffer properties at low pH and reached maximum at pH ~ 4. Phosphates possessed buffer properties in the pH range from 4.5 to 8.0. The maximum of buffering was at pH~6.8 and increased proportionally with an increase in the concentration of phosphate ions. The study indicated that the presence of phosphate ions may strongly change natural buffer capacity of humic acids by shifting buffering maximum toward higher pH values. Significant correlations were found for the degree of the secondary transformation with both the buffer capacity and the titrant volume used during titration.

Opis:
Asahi SL stimulates plant’s vital processes like growth and development, affects physiology and biochemistry, what often leads to increased biomass accumulation and yield. However, common is opinion that application of this preparation could be beneficial only, when treated plants are grown under unfavorable conditions. Therefore the aim of this work was the assessment of the stimulatory effect of Asahi SL on Arabidopsis thaliana L. and ornamental amaranth plants grown under optimal conditions. Plants treated with Asahi SL were higher and more advanced in development, particularly generative. Biomass accumulation was greater after biostimulator application mainly due to better photosynthetic apparatus efficiency, which was manifested by (i) greater leaf area, (ii) higher total chlorophyll content and (iii) increased intensity of photosynthesis. Effect of Asahi SL on chlorophyll a fluorescence was marginal. Despite of higher transpiration and lowered stomatal resistance the RWC was almost unchanged in biostimulator treated plants what was attributed to increased water uptake. Obtained results clearly showed that Asahi SL applied on plants can also be effective and beneficial when they are grown under optimal conditions.

In the experiment eight populations of Picea abies were chosen at 100 m intervals between 500 m and 1200 m altitude a.s.l.. In each population wood core samples were collected from 14–19 trees (126 cores total), and measured using a Corim Maxi device. At four of the eight sites (every 200 m in elevation between 500 m and 1100 m a.s.l.), the diversity of ground vegetation was evaluated, and temperature was recorded at every 100 m of altitude. The highest average radial increment of spruce occurred between the altitudes 800–1000 m a.s.l., which is probably the optimum for spruce. The larger increment indices observed at higher altitudes may signify a high growth potential of spruce. It may also suggest a recent upward shift of the optimum growth zone for this tree species. In 15 phytosociological records, the presence of 148 plant species forming plant associations: Dentario glandulosae- Fagetum typicum (sub-mountainous and mountainous form) and Abieti-Piceetum, and community Abies alba-Rubus hirtus, was documented. No relationship was found between ground vegetation species diversity (expressed by Shannon-Wiener index) and levels of stand diversity. The vegetation species diversity varied with the elevation above sea level: the highest plant diversity was found at 500 m a.s.l., and decreased with increasing altitude. The potential increase in air temperatures may result in changes to the altitudinal range of many plant species including trees, and consequently in an upward shift of the boundaries of plant zones; in this case the sub-mountainous and lower mountainous forest zone. In this region, the optimal zone for Norway spruce may be restricted to the highest elevations.

Seedlings of various provenances and progenies were greenhouse grown in sand cultures with different levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium. The first experiment tested 20 provenances and the next studied 45–50 half-sib families of 9–10 provenances to establish the interaction between Picea abies genotypes and nutrition levels. Spruces of various origins differed in their nutrient requirements. In particular, seedlings from Wisła and Istebna grew better at smaller phosphorus levels. The genotype × environment interactions were significant for numerous traits when seedlings were grown at different levels of nitrogen, phosphorus and calcium, and for a few traits for potassium. The proportion of variance explained by interaction was small. Generally, the interactions were significant for a greater number of traits at progeny level than at provenance level. The results suggest that it is possible to select genotypes which are suitable for specific site conditions and genotypes which are stable over a wide range of nutrition levels.

Opis:
The research has been performed on roots of Vitis vinifera, cv. Himrod, obtained from seedlings grown under chill stress conditions (+10oC in the day and +7oC at night), under optimum conditions (+25oC in the day and +18oC at night) and from seedling which underwent a recover period after the chill stress treatment. The purpose of the study has been to determine quantitative and qualitative changes in phenolic compounds as well as to demonstrate changes in antiradical properties of extracts from grapevine roots, which appeared as a result of chill stress and during recovery under the optimum conditions following the stress. Phenolic compounds from grapevine roots were extracted using 80% acetone. The total content of phenolics was determined by colorimetry. The content of tannins was tested by precipitation with bovine serum albumin. The reducing power as well as DPPH• free radical and ABTS+• cation radical scavenging activity of the extracts were also tested. In order to identify phenolic compounds present in the extracts the RP-HPLC technique was employed. The tested material was found to contain tannins and three identified phenolic acids: ferulic, caffeic and p-coumaric ones. The latter occurred in the highest concentrations (from 4.46 to 6.28 µg/g fresh matter). Ferulic acid appeared in smaller amounts (from 1.68 to 2.65 µg/g fresh matter), followed by caffeic acid (from 0.87 to 1.55 µg/g fresh matter). Significantly less total phenolic compounds occurred in roots of seedlings subjected to chill stress. However, the total content of these compounds increased significantly in roots of plants which underwent recovery after chill stress. Concentration of tannins was determined by two methods. The content of condensed tannins was depressed in roots as a result of low temperature stress, whereas the content of condensed and hydrolysing tannins (determined via the BSA method) rose under chill stress conditions. A significant increase in tannins in root extracts (determined with both methods) was found during the recovery process after the stress. The three identified phenolic acids appeared in grapevine roots as ester-bound compounds. It has been demonstrated that the content of phenolic acids significantly fell as a result of low temperatures, but increased during recovery after chill stress. The weakest ability to scavenge DPPH• and ABTS+• free radicals as well as the reducing power were shown by the extract obtained from grapevine roots from the seedlings subjected to chill stress. Both free radical scavenging activity and reducing power were observed to increase considerably during recovery after stress. This seems to prove that during the recovery process following chill stress the synthesis of antioxidative compounds in grapevine roots is much more intensive.

Przeprowadzono wstępne badania, dotyczące wpływu różnych dawek NaCl (poziomów zasolenia), dodawanych do podłoża glebowego na kinetykę wzrostu trzech klonów Salix viminalis L. W czasie wegetacji rośliny dwukrotnie podlewano roztworami chlorku sodu o stężeniach: 0 (kontrola); 1; 1,5; 2%. Miarą wzrostu były przyrosty długości i grubości pędów; oznaczono też suchą masę roślin.
Preliminary studies were conducted on the effects of various doses of NaCl (salinity levels) added to soil on the growth kinetics of three clones of Salix viminalis L. During vegetation the plants were treated twice with the solution of sodium chloride at the following concentrations: 0 (control); 1; 1.5; 2%. Growth was measured with increases in shoot length and thickness; dry matter was also determined. The growth process was best described with quadratic function. The highest elongation growth dynamics was noted for Bjor clone at 1% salinity level. At the same salinity the greatest stem thickness increase was observed in Jorr and Tora. As far as the dry matter yield was concerned, Jorr was found to be most tolerant to saline stress, while Tora – least tolerant.

Opis:
Plant growth throughout the world is often limited by unfavourable environmental conditions. This paper reports results of a study on long- and short-term osmotic stress (−0.5 MPa) followed by a recovery on in vitro translational capacity of polysomes and on the composition of polysome-associated proteins in germinating pea (Pisum sativum L.) seeds. Here we show that, under osmotic stress, cytoskeleton-bound polysomes were charaterized by the highest translation activity, which may be indicative of an important role that this population of polysomes plays in the synthesis of the so-called “stress proteins”. We also find out that in response to osmotic stress, new proteins (22.01, 96.47 and 105.3 kDa), absent in the unstressed sample, associated with the total pool of polysomes, whereas the protein of 22.95 kDa, which was present in the embryonic tissue of seeds germinating under unstressed conditions, disappeared. These changes may have affected both the stability and the translational capacity of polysomes.

This study describes the effect of watering on the mycorrhizal development and growth of Scots pine seedlings in a bare root nursery. Seedlings of Scots pine, grown under nursery conditions on natural soil (loamy sand) and soil + litter, were subjected to two different watering regimes for five months. During this time, measurements of soil water potential were made. Seedlings grown in natural soil and subjected to drought conditions were of significantly greater shoot height and volume and they had one mycorrhizal morphotype more than watered seedlings. However, irrigated seedlings subjected to excessive watering possessed greater mycorrhizal colonization: 46% on natural soil and 72% on soil + litter, while non-irrigated seedlings had 36% and 67% levels of mycorrhizal colonization, respectively.

Vaccinium macrocarpon Ait. –the cranberry of the Ericaceae family is cultivated mostly on high peat bogs. In Poland exist a good climatical conditions and considerable acreage of acid soils for cranberry growing. Cranberries can be consumed solely after processing, mostly as juice and sauce. Cranberries are beneficial for the human organism because they are a good source of vitamin A, B1, B2 , B6 and C, flavonoides, organic acids and other substances. Experiments on investigation of 6 cultivars of the American large fruited cranberries were begun in 2004 at the research plantation of Department of Genetics and Horticultural Plant Breeding in Felin, near Lublin. Seedlings were planted out at spacings of 50×50 cm in specialy prepared beds filled with sphagnum peat. During the experiments the following indices were evaluated: growth rhythm, length of horizontal shoots, number of vertical shoots per 1 m², number of flowers and berries per 1 m² in 4 – fold replications, weight of 100 berries and vitality of pollen. Over two years cultivars ‘Pilgrim’ and ‘Cropper’ had the highest yield (average 662 g and 611 g per 1 m², respectively). ‘Stankavich’ had the lowest yields of all 6 cultivars (average 95.5 g). ‘Pilgrim’ and ‘Cropper’ had the largest fruit size (average 1.55 g and 1.51 g, respectively), ‘Stankavich’ the smallest (av. 0.57 g), and ‘Le Munion’, Nr 20 and ‘Stevens’ were intermediate in fruit size. Interaction clone × year proved to be important in the case of such characteristics as: annual increment of shoots, number of flowers per 1 m², number of berries per 1 m² and weight of berries. The number of grains with alieve cytoplasm was the greatest in ‘Cropper’ and ‘Pilgrim’ cultivars.
Podczas dwuletnich badań najlepiej plonowały odmiany ‘Pilgrim’ i ‘Cropper’ (średnio 662 g i 611 g z poletka o powierzchni 1 m²). Najniższy plon zebrano z roślin odmiany ‘Stankavich’ (średnio 95,5 g). Odmiany ‘Pilgrim’ i ‘Cropper’ charakteryzowały się najwyższą średnią masą pojedynczego owocu (odpowiednio 1,55 g i 1,51 g), najdrobniejsze owoce zebrano z roślin odmiany ‘Stankavich’ (0,57 g), natomiast odmiany ‘Cropper’, ‘Le Munion’ i Nr 20 wytwarzały owoce średniej wielkości. Największą liczbę żywotnych ziaren pyłku oszacowano w przypadku odmian ‘Cropper’ i ‘Pilgrim’.

Opis:
There is increasing number of trees dying in large urban agglomerations. The problem is mostly pronounced in the case of street trees. In Polish cities, apart of pollutions generated by traffic, an important factor that causes death of trees is high salt concentration as a result of winter salt application for de-icing of streets. The aim of the study was to assess the growth of limes (Tilia cordata) planted along highly trafficked Warsaw street and exposed, among others, to salt in a form of saline aerosol. The assessment of shoot length, tree height and crown volume, based on the photographic method of the three increment assessments, showed very restrained growth of the studied limes. In the years 2006-2008 the trees performed so poorly as in similar period of 2003-2005 and grew worse than limes form natural habitats. In 2009 we even observed decrease in size of street trees as compared to 2008 which suggests both very bad condition of street habitats and the studied trees. Salt concentration measured on the surface of tree buds and shoots (EC) was higher in street trees than in trees from natural habitats, which indicates that saline aerosol is the source of sodium chloride. We observed highly diversified reactions of individual trees to the whole complex of street conditions. It is therefore recommended to select for propagation individuals from among most tolerant and vigorously growing plants (genotypes) to be used in street planting.

Opis:
Based on a three-year field experiment under controlled condition in Ji’nan, China, the effects of peanut growth on the variation in the abundance and community structure of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and archaea (AOA) before and after peanut growth were investigated through quantitative PCR and cluster analysis of terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism. Our results show that the community composition of AOA and AOB was greatly affected by the peanut growth leading to the decreased abundance of AOA and increased abundance of AOB. Furthermore, AOA and AOB community structures varied before and after peanut growth. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that all AOA and AOB community sequences were clustered into the uncultured group. Altogether, the results suggested that the abundance of AOA and AOB in soil and their community compositions can be greatly affected by the peanut growth.

Opis:
Hyacinthoides hispanica (Mill.) Rothm. is a valuable bulbous ornamental plant grown in parks and gardens. It comes from the Iberian Peninsula, hence its cultivation under Polish conditions may be inefficient. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of growing conditions and foliar feeding using phosphorous fertilizer on the growth and decorative qualities of H. hispanica. It was found that the pine bark layer effectively protected the plants from freezing, which had a beneficial effect on their growth and flowering characteristics. Flowering of plants grown without the mulch was minimal, which clearly indicates that mulching of the soil under H. hispanica can be necessary. Plants grown using the mulch produced more and longer leaves, and also formed more inflorescences and fruits as well as longer inflorescence stems. The addition of peat to the soil did not favour the growth and decorative qualities of H. hispanica, while foliar nutrition with phosphorous had a positive effect. In addition, the decorative values of H. hispanica were influenced by the interaction of soil mulching with bark and foliar feeding. Plants grown in this combination had more inflorescences, which were higher, composed of more flowers in the inflorescence and reached a greater diameter than non-fertilized ones. Tested cultivars of H. hispanica differed in their features of growth and flowering.
