We assumed that wood of trees undamaged by wind will be characterized by higher basic density than wood of damaged specimens. It was stated that wood of windthrow had lower basic density, but differences were not statistically significant. Two parts of wood: (compressed and tensioned zones) were analyzed separately. Higher density was found in tensioned zone of windthrow and in compressed zone in control trees. Similar results were obtained in samples of extreme.

Research was carried out in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands damaged by strong wind in six locations in Poland. The aim of this study was to analyse the radial variation of compressive strength parallel to grain in the wind−broken trees and neighbouring survivors. Strength tests were conducted in moisture above saturation fibre point. There were no significant differences in the radial distribution of the compressive strength between the compression side (breakage side) and the tension side (the opposite one). Either there were no significant differences between compression strength of damaged trees and neighbouring standing trees.

Opis:
Analyses were conducted on wood from twelve Scots pines from northern Poland, aged 102 to 110 years, growing on former farmland and on forest grounds. The study was an attempt to determine basic density of wood, compressive strength along the grain, bending strength of absolutely dry wood and wood with moisture content above saturation point. Desorption strengthening was determined for analyzed strength properties of wood. Wood properties were determined in terms of juvenile and mature wood zones. Generally pines growing on former farmlands were characterized by wood with higher density and slightly lower strength than pines growing on typical forest soils. Conducted investigations indicate varied structure and properties of wood tissue formed in pines growing on former farmlands, which is different from that of typical forest soils.

Opis:
The abundance and diversity of wood decomposing fungi were investigated by isolating and cultivating filamentous fungi from wood and by detection of fruit bodies of ascomycetous and basidiomycetous fungi. The objective was to study the impact of forest management on fungi in 100-year-old oak and 87-year-old Scots pine forests in Northern Poland. Fungi were found on coarse woody debris of decayed stumps and fallen logs, boughs and branches in each of the three (managed and unmanaged) examined stands. In total, 226 species of Oomycota and fungi were recorded. Oak wood was colonized by one species of Oomycota and 141 species of fungi including Zygomycota (19 species), Ascomycota (103 species) and Basidiomycota (19 species). Scots pine wood was also colonized by one species of Oomycota and 138 species of fungi including Zygomycota (19 species), Ascomycota (90 species) and Basidiomycota (29 species). In the first, second and third stages of decomposition, the oak wood was colonized by 101, 89 and 56 species of fungi respectively and pine wood was colonized by 82, 103 and 47 species respectively. Eighty three of the observed species (37%) occurred on both types of wood, while the other species displayed nutritional preferences. A decrease in the number of species with advancing decay indicates the necessity for a continuous supply of dead wood to the forest ecosystem. This supply would secure the continuity of fauna and flora and guarantee a stable forest development. The nutritional and ecological preferences of many fungal species furthermore indicate the necessity of supplying the forests with wood of different species. In commercially managed forests the results obtained here will aid in: (i) the development of strategies for effective dead wood management in the context of forest productivity and future wood stock growth, as well as (ii) finding a compromise between forest management requirements and environmental protection.

In 31 oldest pine stands situated in central and eastern Poland the age within one stand ranged between 8 and 155, on average 10−40 years. These were the stands characterised with the continuity of the regeneration process, but also two−generation stands in which the generation gap between the two generations was 60−120 years. Multi−generation stands were uncommon and the regeneration process had a „wavy pattern”. The likelihood of wood rot occurrence in trees at the age of 200 years as calculated on the basis of a 690−tree sample (age between 84 and 235 years) is 60% on average, and on more fertile sites it exceeds 70%.

Opis:
Scots pine is the dominant forest tree species in Poland covering 58.0% of the forest area and constituting 61.1% of timber resources. Theoretically, all types of cuttings can be used in pine stands, but the purpose of the paper is to analyse the share of the main groups of assortments obtained from such stands with the use of: clear, group and gradual cuttings. It should be remembered that all types and forms of cutting are ideological, and the choice of a particular system should be determined by the silviculture goal. We used the data from the years 2012−2014 to conduct the research. The analysis covered Scots pine stands from all forest districts of the State Forests National Forest Holding, in which this species had a share of 80 to 100%. We analysed clear (I), group (III) and gradual (IV) cutting systems. Over 3.1 million hectares of mono−species pine stands was analysed. Numerical data was obtained from the database of the State Forests Information System. The studies took into account the assortments that actually occurred in a given subclass of age, divided into the type of cuttings, aggregated into three categories: small, medium and large−sized timber. In Poland, in mono−species Scots pine stands, mainly I and III cutting systems (about 97% of analysed stands) were used, the remaining types of treatments were sporadic. The largest share of harvest was characterized by the pulpwood assortment in harvesting I and III and the sawmill wood in the IV cutting system. With age, a decrease in the proportion of small−sized assortments and a gradual increase in the share of large−sized assortments was observed, while in the case of medium−sized assortments, the culmination of the share occurs at the age of 35−45 years, in all the analysed cutting systems. The course of the fraction of sub−classes in the case of large and medium−sized assortments in I and III cutting systems was similar.

Opis:
Scots pine wood is widely used in many branches of the wood industry. The possibility to select the raw material quality according to the specific processing needs corresponding to different uses is related with the issues of the standardisation, which comprises classification based both on the dimensions of processed assortments as well as their defects and traits of anatomical construction. In the last two decades of economic transformations in Poland, there has been increasing importance of the standardisation process because of the trade between the European Union (EU) member−states. EU−membership involved gradual adjustment to the rules of round wood trade, which are applicable in the old EU member−states. Many international certification institutions as well as the Polish Committee for Standardisation were involved in the process of standardisation. The experience of northern and western European countries generated a very complex classification system, which partly matched the national standards. There are differences in the description of Scots pine wood characteristics and defects in the domestic standards and technical conditions concerning this timber trade, which is of key importance to the Polish wood industry.

The aim of the study was to collect and present in a synthetic way the current state of knowledge on wood quality and factors affecting its fluctuations. Selected research papers presented in this study refer to Scots pine – the most important forest−forming species both in Poland and our part of Europe. Presented relationships between selected wood properties and characteristics of trees on the one hand and methods adopted in the management policy indicate that it is possible to modify wood quality on standing trees. In the future the utilization of these properties in forest economy is probably going to facilitate meeting the growing requirements of the wood market, especially in case of valuable assortments.

Opis:
Siberian yellow pine (Pinus sibirica Du Tour.) has increasingly appeared in the merchant offers on the market of raw wood materials in Poland. However, the knowledge of the technical characteristics of its wood is still insufficient for it is based primarily on the data and experiences from abroad, often from the literature of the former USSR. The main aim of this study was to determine selected physical and mechanical properties of Siberian yellow pine wood such as linear and volumetric shrinkage, compressive strength along the fibers, the tensile strength along the fibers, the tensile strength across the fibers, static bending and modulus of elasticity, flexural dynamic and impact strength, hardness, resistance to splitting and cleavage amd shear strength. Futhermore, the resistance to decay caused by Coniophora puteana (Schum., Fr.) Karst., as well as the examination of the wood structure, assessing the dimensions and arrangement of the structural elements in particular were conducted. The results show that Siberian yellow pine wood has a number of similarities to Scots pine wood in terms of the structure. The wood is very light, with a density of 391 kg/m3 and very soft (Janka hardness on transverse cross section 23 MPa). The mechanical properties of Siberian yellow pine wood are closely related to its density and much lower when compared with Scots pine. Shear strength equalled to 67 MPa, static bending strength – 65 MPa and compression strength along the fibers – 49 MPa. The durability to brown rot fungus of Siberian pine wood is comparable to Scots pine (3rd class according to PN−EN 350−2:2000).
