Opis:
The analysis of the sales methods and prices of the highest quality timber (wood veneer, plywood and telecommunication poles) was based on the data obtained from the General Directorate of the State Forests covering the period 2005−2009. They were supplemented by the data on sales, prices and revenues from sales, auctions and submissions obtained from the Regional Directorates of the State Forests (RDSF) in: Szczecin, Poznań, Białystok, Krosno and Lublin. The results of the submission sales organized by the Krosno RDSF and auctions organized by the Poznań RDSF in 2005−2009 were also analysed. The analyses confirm that sales of the highest quality wood through auctions and submissions give the best economic results while ensuring the optimal use of the existing resource base. Both sales methods foster rational use of valuable wood and therefore should be adopted in other RDSFs. In the years 2005−2009, the difference (increase) between wood valuation and the derived income from the auction sales organized in the Poznań RDSF amounted to 39.6%. The difference (increase) between wood valuation and the derived income from the submission sales organized in the Krosno RDSF in the same period amounted to 80.1%. The maximum prices of wood veneer obtained through auctions and submissions are higher than the prices obtained via Internet sales. Among the WA1 assortments sold in Poland in the years 2005−2009, sycamore, maple, and cherry veneer reached the highest average price per cubic meter. Among the wood species from which veneer is produced, oak veneer is the most sold species. Among the WB1 assortments sold in Poland in the years 2005−2009, pine and spruce plywood reached the highest average price per cubic meter. The prices of birch, beech and alder plywood were lower and varied by a maximum of 6.7%. Among the species from which plywood is produced, birch plywood sells bests.

The paper refers to the research on bark−dwelling thrips (Thysanoptera) on oaks (Quercus sp.) in the area of ‘Martinský les' wood that is a rare isolated refuge of natural oak wood stands Aceri tatarici−Quercetum Zólyomi 1957 being situated in lowland close to the town Senec in SW Slovakia. Arboreal photoeclectors were used for sampling corticolous arthropods at 6 various sites during the vegetation periods 2007 and 2008 in three−week intervals. Totally 1544 specimens of 35 Thysanoptera species were collected. Six of the species: Kakothrips dentatus, Thrips calcaratus, Phlaeothrips bispinoides, Hoplothrips corticis, Megathrips nobilis and Poecilothrips albopictus were observed for the first time in Slovakia. The statistic analysis PPCA was used for finding the relation between the assemblage's species composition and the age of oak trees on researched sites.

Opis:
Awareness of the importance of the presence of deadwood in forest ecosystems has increased in recent decades. Today, deadwood is not only recognized as a key element in carbon sequestration, nutrient supply and water retention, but is also known to be a reservoir of saproxylic species (species associated with the decay of wood on living and dead trees). The amount of deadwood in clear−cut forest is currently higher than 100 years ago. The issue of how much deadwood and of what quality (including size) there should be in order to promote the conservation of saproxylic biodiversity and sustainable forest management is still vivid. Mycological analyses to determine (i) structure of fungal communities in Scots pine wood debris, (ii) sources and reservoirs of fungi, (iii) nutritional preferences of fungi, and (iv) potential rate and dynamics of wood decomposition were carried out on an ‘old' and ‘fresh' wood (stumps, branches and boughs) from Jedwabno Forest District (north−eastern Poland). Fungi from 62 wood samples were isolated on two artificial media (PDA and SNA) and identified according to their morphology. Eleven species of Zygomycota, 79 of Ascomycota and 15 of Basidiomycota were detected. The majority of species (91%) colonized many samples. Only 9% of species colonized single samples only. The most common species, with high rates of colonization, included Acremonium spp., Alternaria sp., Aspergillus spp., Aureobasidium pullulans, Cladosporium spp., Epicoccum nigrum, Lecythophora spp., Mariannaea elegans, Ophiostoma + Sporothrix spp., Penicillium spp., Phialocephala spp., Phialophora spp., Phlebiopsis gigantea, Phoma spp., Sarocladium strictum, Scytalidium lignicola, Sydowia polyspora, Trichoderma spp. (mainly T. harzianum and T. viride) and Umbelopsis spp. A few species occurred only on stumps or only on branches. More species occurred on 'old' wood than on 'fresh' wood. The average level of sample colonization by a single fungal species was higher (non−significantly) on 'old' than on 'fresh' wood, and on branches than on stumps. The results show that deadwood is a habitat for many fungal species that occur in succession. The presence of deadwood in clear−cut forest and in its neighborhood is necessary for the conservation of saproxylic fungal diversity and ecological sustainability of forests.

Opis:
The abundance and diversity of wood decomposing fungi were investigated by isolating and cultivating filamentous fungi from wood and by detection of fruit bodies of ascomycetous and basidiomycetous fungi. The objective was to study the impact of forest management on fungi in 100-year-old oak and 87-year-old Scots pine forests in Northern Poland. Fungi were found on coarse woody debris of decayed stumps and fallen logs, boughs and branches in each of the three (managed and unmanaged) examined stands. In total, 226 species of Oomycota and fungi were recorded. Oak wood was colonized by one species of Oomycota and 141 species of fungi including Zygomycota (19 species), Ascomycota (103 species) and Basidiomycota (19 species). Scots pine wood was also colonized by one species of Oomycota and 138 species of fungi including Zygomycota (19 species), Ascomycota (90 species) and Basidiomycota (29 species). In the first, second and third stages of decomposition, the oak wood was colonized by 101, 89 and 56 species of fungi respectively and pine wood was colonized by 82, 103 and 47 species respectively. Eighty three of the observed species (37%) occurred on both types of wood, while the other species displayed nutritional preferences. A decrease in the number of species with advancing decay indicates the necessity for a continuous supply of dead wood to the forest ecosystem. This supply would secure the continuity of fauna and flora and guarantee a stable forest development. The nutritional and ecological preferences of many fungal species furthermore indicate the necessity of supplying the forests with wood of different species. In commercially managed forests the results obtained here will aid in: (i) the development of strategies for effective dead wood management in the context of forest productivity and future wood stock growth, as well as (ii) finding a compromise between forest management requirements and environmental protection.

Opis:
Wymaga ona zastosowania skomplikowanych i wyrafinowanych urządzeń pomiarowych.
Studies of forest ecosystems are essential to assess their impact on the global balance of CO2. They are already held in many European countries such as Germany, Finland and Czech Republic. Also in Poland, the first measuring station started, where they carry out measurements of gas and heat exchange between the atmosphere and the forest and biomass measurements. It is located in Tuczno Forest District. To assess the magnitude of net carbon flux of forest ecosystems the eddy covariance method is commonly used. It requires quite complicated and sophisticated measuring equipment. Measurement of aboveground biomass, and thus the quantity of CO2 deposited under the forest can be complementary to the results obtained by the eddy covariance method. Estimation of forest biomass may be carried out both traditional and modern techniques using remote sensing. These tests are carried out, inter alia, using innovative techniques of terrestrial laser scanning, supplemented by airborne laser scanning, high resolution digital photos and orthophotomap and hemispherical photos.

Opis:
The article presents an analysis of the birch market in Poland in 2008−2012, including the acquisition (supply) of birch wood, the income structure, prices of birch wood, the structure of birch wood recipients and the volume of purchased timber. The necessary materials were obtained from the Forest Data Bank (BDL) and the State Forests Information System (SILP). The S2 wood assortment representing more than 54% of all assortment groups is most often harvested in Poland. Next come M1 representing 14%, as well as S4 and WC – each with share slightly exceeding 11%. The vast majority of the harvested and handled birch wood is in the group of medium−sized assortments S representing 66%, and in the group of small−sized assortments M representing 14%. Birch wood classified as large−sized W totals 20%. Similarly, timber assortments from group S2 also generate the largest portion of revenues (over 50% of total revenues from birch wood sales). High fluctuations in the prices of certain groups of birch wood assortments constitute a significant problem from the point of view of both the State Forests and wood consumers. A possible reduction in the supply of wood of this species in the future may deepen this phenomenon. Average sales prices of birch wood on the Polish market are lower than the prices obtained by timber producers in the neighbouring countries. The price differences in favour of foreign timber producers reach up to 20% and relate to roundwood in different quality and size classes. The exceptionally high technical quality of birch wood in our country does not translate to higher prices per cubic meter of raw timber in the domestic turnover. The sharp increase in the demand for a special type of fibres for the manufacture of many products characterized by exceptional strength (i.e. products from polymers) and textiles with special insulating properties, as well as the production of certain grades of paper and board, will stimulate the consumption of birch wood in the future.

Opis:
The study was conducted in the Polish (Roztoczanski National Park) and Ukrainian (Rava-Rus'ka Landscape Reserve and Yavorivskyi National Park) parts of the Roztocze region. In each of these locations three research areas were established in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands under similar ecological conditions. The purpose of this study was to carry out a survey of possible scenarios for pine stand dynamics in the Polish and Ukrainian parts of Roztocze using the FORKOME model. A control scenario was compared with four other climate change scenarios (warm dry and warm humid; cold dry and cold humid) for a period of covering the next 100 years. Using the control scenario, the FORKOME model predicted that for the next 100 years pine stands will dominate in terms of biomass and number of trees. The warm-dry and warm-humid climate scenarios resulted in slightly reduced biomass of pine stands. However pine would still maintain its dominance, although with a noticeable increase in beech and fir biomass. Nevertheless, in term of the number of trees during the second half of the simulation, it is beech and fir that dominate stand 1 in Roztoczanski National Park. Under the climate cooling scenario (cold dry and cold humid), the biomass of pine and spruce would increase during the next 100 years. Pine trees that would dominate in terms of their numbers, although the number of spruce individuals also tends to increase. The results presented in the paper indicate that the FORKOME model is very useful when investigating different climate changes scenarios in the Roztocze region.

Opis:
Integrating the economic aspects of forest management (cost) with ecological elements of timber production (habitat type) significantly contributes to a better understanding of forest growth and utilisation. The type of silvicultural treatments and forest habitat types determine number of economic activities carried out in the stands and have an important impact on the associated costs. The aim of the study was to describe the impact of silviculture treatments and types of forest habitat on unit timber harvesting cost. We summarised the cost of timber logging depending on the harvest practices and types of habitats. In total, costs of treatments performed on the 2.5 thousand ha area were analysed. Obtained results were combined in relation to average unit costs of raw timber logging from individual habitats and silviculture treatments such as late cleanings and thinnings. The studied impact was assessed with standard deviation (SD) based on the assumption that the higher its value, the more important role of silvicultural treatments and forest habitats in defining the cost of raw timber harvesting. Our study showed that both factors (type of forest habitat and silvicultural treatment) had an effect on variability of timber logging costs. Comparing deciduous and coniferous habitats, higher costs were reported for the latter one. The highest unit cost of timber logging was found on the fresh coniferous habitat, while the lowest on the wet mixed forest. Moreover, the highest cost was reported for timber raw material harvested from late cleanings and the lowest from late thinnings. SD of the average cost of timber harvest ranged from 12.67 to 13.53 PLN depending on the silviculture treatments and from 0.68 to 2.39 PLN depending on the forest type. Our findings are important preliminary steps in broader study regarding revenues generated from forest stands growing on different habitats. Eventually it would help in assessing the profitability of economic activity that depends on environmental conditions of forest management.

The variation of the fibre structure indices was determined for silver birch. The examined trees came from north−eastern Poland, which is the largest source of raw material of this species. Wood samples were taken for measurement from trees aged 45 and 70 years that grew in the fresh deciduous forest habitat. Fibre structure indices measuring felting, flexibility, rigidity, rigidity according to Runkel as well as Mühlsteph's and compactness indices were selected as the basic fibre pulp properties and subjected to statistical analysis. A significant effect of the location and age of trees on all wood fibre structure indices except for the effect of age on the compactness index was found. The studies also showed a significant, simultaneous effect of tree location and age on the mean values of all analysed indices of silver birch wood fibre structure.

Opis:
Pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) is the most valuable deciduous tree species in Poland. For almost 30 years, an oak decline resulting from stress factors leading to a decrease of tree vitality in the long-term has been observed. The aim of the present study was to determine the proportion of leaves infected by the fungus Erysiphe alphitoides, the cause of powdery mildew, in post-flood oak stands situated in the Forest District Wołów (51°32’N, 16°62’E) as well as to evaluate effects of powdery mildew with respect to the oak decline. In order to record the powdery mildew incidence, we selected three trees in each of the ten investigated oak stands, and 200 leaves were collected from the upper part of the crowns. The percentage of infected leaves as well as the reduction of carbon assimilation capacity was assessed. Furthermore, we evaluated the average reduction of carbon assimilation capacity and the percentage of withering branch tips in 25 adjacent trees. Incidences of powdery mildew were observed in seven out of the ten stands. The maximum tree damage did not exceed 22% leaf infection and mean defoliation within the study areas ranged from 18% to 61.4%. Non-withering branch tips were observed in one post-flood area as well as in one area situated outside the flooded region. Within the remaining areas studied, the average proportion of withering branch tips ranged from 0.4% to 13.8%. Statistical analyses showed that differences between the investigated stands with regard to the rate of powdery mildew occurrence were not significant. Correlating the means, however, revealed a relationship between powdery mildew incidence and branch tip withering. This relationship is a possible indication of the ongoing oak dieback. No statistically significant relationship between tree defoliation and powdery mildew incidence was found. The lack of statistical significance, as observed here, implies that water stagnation within the investigated stands had no effect on Erysiphe alphitoides infection.

Samples for measurement were taken from the plots with trees aged 45−50 years growing in the fresh deciduous (Lśw) and fresh mixed deciduous (LMśw) forest habitats. The following properties were subjected to statistical analysis: the average width of annual rings, wood density determined for the samples of 20×20×300 mm, 20×20×30 mm, and 30×2.66×0.1 mm in size (the last dimension parallel to grain), tensile strength parallel to grain, compression strength parallel to grain, static bending, modulus of elasticity in static bending and the coefficients of tensile strength parallel to grain, compression parallel to grain, static bending, and modulus of elasticity in static bending. The research confirmed a significant effect of the habitat on the mean values of birch wood density for all examined sample sizes, tensile strength parallel to grain, static bending and modulus of elasticity in static bending. No significant effect of the habitat on the mean values of annual ring width, tensile strength parallel to grain and the coefficients of tensile strength parallel to grain, compression strength parallel to grain, static bending and modulus of elasticity in static bending for birch wood samples was found.

Opis:
Effects of pre−planting soil preparation on the clear−cut on the community structure of soil fungi and bacteria, their possible biological activity towards Armillaria and Heterobasidion, and mortality of Scots pine trees were studied in 40−year−old Scots pine plantation in Międzychód Forest District (W Poland). Pre−planting soil preparation included: (i) deep ploughing, (ii) shallow furrowing, (iii) making holes for planting, and (iv) shallow turning of the topsoil. The soil−dilution method was used for detection of fungi and bacteria in soil. Morphotyping was used for identification of fungi. Phenotypic traits and biochemical properties were used for identification of bacteria. Molecular method, MID−66 or BIOLOG® systems were additionally applied for identification of the most common bacteria. Deep furrowing, making holes for planting or shallow turning of the topsoil before planting increased abundance of fungi and bacteria in soil 40 years after treatment. Increased abundance of fungi and bacteria was associated with increased presence of taxa considered as antagonistic to Armillaria and Heterobasidion. The highest mortality of Scots pines was observed on sites with deep ploughing or shallow furrowing before planting, while the lowest mortality was found on sites with making holes for planting or shallow turning of the topsoil. The majority of dead trees were infected by H. annosum. Moderate intervention into the soil habitat on the clear−cut site before planting of Scots pine seedlings seems to create the habitat beneficial for the future growth of trees.

Opis:
The article compares the impact of production technique, planting material, soil type and moisture on the growth of pine seedlings. The material used in the experiment comprised pines grown in containers to which controlled mycorrhization with the fungus Hebeloma crustuliniforme was applied, as well as pines that had not been mycorrhized. The seedlings were grown in pots on two types of substrate (forest and post−agricultural soil) varying in cohesiveness and fertility. Four moisture levels (20%, 30%, 40% and 50%) were adopted.

Opis:
Effects of post−harvest wood−debris utilization and pre−planting soil preparation in clear−cut forest on the community structure of soil fungi and bacteria and their possible biological activity towards Armillaria and Heterobasidion were studied in 1− and 10−year−old Scots pine plantations in Bierzwnik and Międzychód Forest Districts (W Poland). Post−harvest wood−debris utilization included: (i) removal from the surface, (ii) spread of the coarse or chipped wood−debris on the surface and (iii) mixing of the chipped wood debris with the soil. Pre−planting soil preparation included: (i) deep furrowing, (ii) shallow turning of the topsoil, (iii) ridging and (iv) no ground preparation. Removal of post−harvest wood−debris from the surface of the clear−cut land and shallow turning of the topsoil or ridging before planting increased abundance of fungi in soil of 1−year−old Scots pine plantation. Deep furrowing resulted in increased abundance of fungi and no ground preparation in increased abundance of bacteria in soil of 10−year−old Scots pine plantation. Increased abundance of fungi and bacteria was associated with increased abundance of taxa considered as antagonistic to Armillaria and Heterobasidion. Removal of the post−harvest wood debris and moderate or no mechanical intervention into the soil habitat on the clear−cut site before planting of Scots pine seedlings seems to create the habitat, which may be beneficial for the growth of young trees.
