Opis:
Compression ignition engines have no possibility for self-regeneration of DPF and regeneration requires additional energy for soot combustion (additional fuel or electric energy) after some period of the engine work as a result of closing of substrate pores by soot. The innovation method takes into account a self-regeneration of diesel particle filter by use of special heat recovery system. The paper shows one of possible design of DPF self-regeneration. The exhaust temperature behind the turbine and catalytic converter is very low and for an increasing of gas temperature before DPF, the heat from soot combustion can be used. The preliminary studies show a possibility of using the special design of DPF with heat recovery system. The paper presents results obtained from simulations based on one-dimensional model of such system and analysis of increasing the heat recovery ratio by change of geometry of DPF. The gas heat exchange formulas between DPF and the heat exchange model are partly included in the paper. The preliminary results of calculations show the possibility of increase of exhaust gases in front of DPF about 20%, which enables a continuous regeneration of DPF. Heat recovery ratio is depends on soot combustion rate on the wall of DPF monolith. The method enables to recover some part of energy which is lost in the conventional DPF. The paper is a part of further work in European project FP6 IPSY.

Opis:
Current and future air quality is a worldwide concern, which has resulted in both a continuous tightening of emissions legislation for vehicles and a parallel tightening of fuel specifications. The automotive and oil industry across the globe especially in EU, USA and Japan have in each case made considerable efforts to understand the relationship between vehicle emissions, urban air quality, engine technologies and fuels, and to meet the more and more stringent legislation. The supply of automotive fuels today is based almost entirely on petroleum. The quality requirements of diesel fuels become more and more stricter and it will continue in the next decades, because the clean engines need clean fuels. Therefore, fuels of low emission become significant factor in reducing toxic emission which pollutes the environment. With the introduce of low sulfur diesel fuel, the effect of sulfur become less significant. Other fuel properties such as aromatics content i.e. composition thus becomes more important. From this aspect it is investigated the affect of simultaneous addition of mono+-, di+ - and tri+-aromatics into low-sulfur diesel fuel. Obtained results show that aromatics composition has the effect on diesel exhaust emission.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of on-road exhaust emission tests of passenger car fitted with diesel engine, and a DPF (diesel particulate filter). Under such conditions the author could determine the actual vehicle emissions. The tests were performed on a road portion of a fifty kilometres or so - these tests provide information on the on-road emissions and are a basis for their ecological evaluation. For the measurement of the exhaust emissions the authors used a portable exhaust emissions analyzer SEMTECH DS by Sensors Inc. The analyzer measured the concentration of the exhaust components at the same time measuring the exhaust mass flow. The measurements of the particulate matter (mass) were done with the use of particle analyzer by AVL. The obtained data were used to calculate the relations that characterize the influence of the dynamic engine parameters on the exhaust emissions. These properties were taken into account indirectly using the whole range of speeds and accelerations of the vehicle (engine speeds and loads of the engine) for the preparation of the matrices of the emissions rate. The used data were averaged within individual speed and acceleration ranges thus obtaining the characteristics of the share of operation in individual ranges and the characteristics of the emission matrices of the individual emission components. The above results served for defining of the emission level indicator of the vehicles that can be used for classification of vehicle fleet in terms of their emission level.

The influence of oxygenated diesel fuel containing n-butanol on a passenger car exhaust emissions was tested over the NEDC transient cycle. The tests showed that a diesel fuel/butanol blend, containing 10% of n-butanol, caused a significant decrease in PM and smoke emissions, had no effect on NOx and CO2 emissions and brought about higher CO and HC emissions. The most favourable fact resulting from the butanol application as diesel fuel component is that it produces desirable changes in PM/NOx trade-off.

Opis:
The results of CFD modelling a dual fuel diesel engine powered with both methanol and diesel fuel is presented in the paper. Modelling was performed with 20 and a 50% energetic share of methanol in the entire dose. The analysis was conducted on both the thermodynamic parameters and exhaust toxicity of dual fuel engine. It was found that the various share of methanol influences the ignition delay of the combustion process and after start of main phase of combustion, the process occurs faster than in case of the diesel engine. It was found that the time of 10-90% burn of the fuel is much shorter than it is in the diesel engine. The dual fuel engine was characterized by higher indicated mean pressure in the whole range of diesel fuel injection timings. While analysing toxic exhaust emission from the dual fuel engine powered with methanol, it was found that the rate of NO formation was significantly higher than from the diesel engine. The combustion process in the dual fuel engine occurs more rapidly than in the conventional diesel engine, which contributes to form areas with high temperature, and in combination with presence of oxygen from the air and oxygen bonded in the methanol, promotes the NO formation. In the case of the dual fuel engine, it was found that soot emission was reduced. The engine running with diesel injection start at 8.5 deg before TDC, the soot emissions were more than twice lower in the dual fuel engine, while the emission of NO was much higher.

Opis:
The common demands for environmental protection in shipping are being recognized by IMO, through development of the rules with respect to SOx and NOx. This paper investigates the results of fuel injection variables, affecting cylinder process performance and exhaust gas emission. The effect of injection assembly design attributed on NO emission was estimated. The similar slow speed, large bore MAN B&W engines performance were compared. The main factors used for evaluation were: fuel consumption, rotational speed, mean and maximum in-cylinder pressures and total concentrations of NOx, CO2, O2i CO, and HC. The engines performance and NO emission were compared with conventional 6S60MC-C and latest — electronically controlled 7S60ME-C. The CFD simulation of combustion and pollutant formation was created to represent processes of a marine large bore engine. The SMC-C engine operation and standard injection nozzle design was taken as a baseline for comparison with measured NO concentration. The predicted cylinder pressures showed reasonable agreement with experimental measurements. The predictive ability of used CFD simulation package was found to be quantitatively insufficient in terms of NOx emission. However, the predicted NO emission exhibits similar sensitivity with experiment results. The quantitative set of reference data for the validation of simulation results needs to be substantially improved. The determination offuel injection and cylinder pressure history can be identified as the most important source of inaccuracy. Finally, weighted NOx specific emission factor for both engines shows close value, sufficiently placed against IMO limit presented in Fig. 11. The results are promising and show that controlled combustion process is capable of fulfilling present and future NOx emission requirements. Modern marine engines are designed with adjustable components to allow the engine to be adjusted for maximum efficiency or NOx weighted emission factor when used in particular application.

Currently, the Baltic Sea States suggests a proposal to designate the Baltic Sea as an Emission Control Area for nitrogen oxides, in accordance with Annex VI of MARPOL73/78. The emission would be estimated on the data produced by the AIS (Automatic Identification System) system that is compulsory for ships. Therefore, exhaust emission of the ships' can be computed using the actual speed and main propulsion shaft power. Mostly, main propulsion engines' exhaust emission is dependent to realistic performance and can be determined. The research plan has been prepared, aimed an evaluating the main propulsion engine performance and emissions. In cooperation with the ship owner, the experimental program onboard the container vessel, equipped with latest large bore, two-stroke, and slow speed MAN B&W electronic controlled engine was carried out. The records set of vessel speed and related engine shaft power, fuel consumption and exhaust emission for container vessel is formed. Taking into account; main engine performance, types of fuel and other input data, the emission factors were determined for ship sea service state. Main engine shaft power estimation and measurement setup, examples of main engine shaft power, the shaft power equation coefficients density, example of main engine service operation, fuel oil consumption group, the ship speed estimated form, example of main engine area operation influenced by weather conditions are presented in the paper.

In 2008 the International Maritime Organization - IMO decided to strengthen the requirements for new ships from 2011 - Tier II. However, for Emission Control Areas (ECAs), such as the Baltic Sea, stringent rules will apply from 1 January 2016 for new ships - Tier III. The new standards introduce restrictions on exhaust emissions from diesel engines - NOx and SOx. The paper presents proposal of new design an existing exhaust gas system of experimental marine diesel engine, which is situated in the Laboratory of Maritime Academy in Szczecin. The conception is due to meet to new environmental regulations. Arrangements of exhaust line, CFD model of the SCR reference plant, CFD model - inlet and outlet boundary conditions, pressure loss model for the catalytic elements, simulation results - streamlines, velocity distribution, reaction progress distribution ate presented in the paper as well design description of system of laboratory- 4-stroke and turbocharged engine. . The means of the reduction systems are based on conventional marine exhaust gas installation that includes noise silencer and soot-catcher. The after-treatment methods do not introduce significant changes in engine arrangement and operation. A new gas purifying system should be installed in the engine exhaust gas system.

This paper describes the experimental method - using non-thermal plasma reactor to cleaning exhaust gases - focused on PM compound. The demonstrator NTP reactor assembly was built as the by-pass in the real exhaust gas after-treatment system, in marine diesel engine. The reactor used to experiment is called - DBD (dielectric barrier discharge) type, The main aim of investigation was to analyze exhaust gas PM compounds under steady load of the engine. Test bench construction enables direct exhaust stream (main exhaust duet by-pass) to plasma reactor exposure with no additional components (coolers, orifices) that can change the exhaust gas properties. A new monitoring PM analyzing system, which can measure soot and SOF in low mass level, has been engaged. It consist of a diffusion charging (DC) detector with a dilution device for soot measurement, and two differential flame ionization detection (FID) method, which uses two FID detectors with separate sample lines. Exhaust emission reduction strategy for ships, Particulate Matters - PM in exhaust gas, non-thermal plasma reactor, experimental test bed and procedure, an example of reactor power measurement, test results provided into seven stages are presented in the paper.

Greater interdependence and integration among the countries worldwide have resulted in the growth of the world trade and, what follows, marine transportation. In the last few years, despite the world economic stagnation, the number of ships has increased. An increase in the marine transportation means greater air pollution caused by ships, what is of paramount importance for the port cities. One of the efficient ways of limiting the negative impact of ships lying in ports on the environment is the power supply from the local electricity stations. This will allow for turning marine power generating systems off, what will result in the emission elimination in the ship’s mooring time along with the decrease of noise and vibrations. The infrastructure of the port electric installation necessary for the ships’ supply has to be designed so as to make the operating of different ship types possible. It is complicated as all over the world ships are equipped with different electric systems. The paper deals with general issues related to common nominal voltages and frequencies for vessels which call in European harbours and their estimated power demands. Additionally, a case study of a ferry vessel, currently undergoing retrofitting for shore connections, is presented and some particulars concerning technical solutions and environmental profits are described.

One of the important design parameters for internal combustion engines is the geometric compression ratio epsilon. It is defined by the ratio of the maximum volume of the combustion chamber Vmax at the bottom dead centre (BDC) piston position and a minimum volume of the combustion chamber Vmin at the top dead centre (TDC) piston position. Conventional engines have this parameter set unchangeable, what is not the solution ensuring optimal benefits coming from the heat release in the combustion process, especially under altering conditions of load and speed in which they perform powering the road vehicles. It is reflected mainly in exhaust emission problem. Despite a considerable progress, further improving the ecological and energetic performances of the piston engines faces severe system limits, elimination of which requires major changes in engine design, including conversion the fixed compression ratio into the flexible one. For such innovative engine designs with so-called variable compression ratio VCR feature the geometric compression ratio parameter is as the one of the operation regulators. Due to the new development prospect the paper scope is an analysis and showing some results for the impact of compression ratio on the emissions of selected exhaust harmful components for a direct injection diesel engine. The schematics and prototype solutions for VCR technology are briefly presented too.

Opis:
The ship "Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI)" has been formulated by the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) as a measure of the CO2 emission performance of ships. The ship EEDI is calculated based on characteristics of the ship at build, incorporating parameters including ship capacity, engine power and fuel consumption. Shipping is responsible for CO2 discharge of approximately 3.3% global emission and despite being an energy-efficient transport means, compared with other transport modes, there are opportunities for increasing energy efficiency. The EEDI requires a minimum energy efficiency level (CO2 emissions) per capacity mile (e.g. tonne mile) for different ship type and size sectors. With the level being tightened over time, the EEDI will stimulate continued technical development of all the components influencing the energy efficiency of a ship. The paper presents an overview of EEDI calculation method for container vessels and results of experimental approach. The experimental process results through comprehensive analysis of operational data, from modern container vessel, equipped with direct main propulsion unit have been introduced. Ship operators have already been implementing energy efficiency operational measures and set goals for reducing the energy consumption of their fleet. Performance and savings are not always monitored and reported. However, it can be foreseen that such activity when is successfully promoted, reduction of CO2 emissions can be achieved.

The internal combustion engine plays a vital role in transportation, industry, and shipping. However, diesel as one of the main fuels for internal combustion engines, caused many environmental and human health problems. In order to solve the problems, more researchers have been committed to the research of alternative fuels. Biodiesel is a renewable, sustainable alternative fuel, and its characteristics are similar to traditional diesel. It can be mixed with pure diesel. It has been found that a mix with pure diesel in a certain ratio can effectively reduce the negative effects caused by its characteristics, improve the combustion performance, and reduce the NOx and PM emissions. This article mainly reviews the effects of the mixture of biodiesel and diesel on engine combustion characteristics and exhaust emissions, including three parts: part (1) summarizes and analyzes the biodiesel’s production and characteristics, part (2) analyzes the engine’s performance under different working conditions, and part (3) studies and analyzes the exhaust emission under different working conditions.
