Opis:
The author of the article concentrates on Silesian regionalists, primarily on the Silesian Autonomy Movement, its social activity as well as political, cultural, and social perception of this activity. Silesian regionalism was a considerable surprise for many Poles. For some of them, the postulates proposed by the Movement seem not only unprecedented in the history of Poland but also threatening the territorial integrity of the country. Public discussions about the Movement are dominated by emotions, not factual arguments, and lack scientific view on the matter. The article aims at filling at least a part of this gap.

Opis:
The specifics of Polish Romantic Reflection on race and cognate notionsThe one and basic characteristic feature of Polish Romantic reflection on race was that it associated race with tribeness. Such a reduction of the notion ‘race’ to ethnicity resulted from the then known definition of nation as a multiethnic and multicultural community which constituted the superior and the superb form of organizing the societal world, as well as from weakness of scholarly reflection in the field of physical anthropology. For Polish Romantics, race was not an objective category that on the basis of exiting physical differences enabled a division of humanity into permanent and clearly delimitated phonotypical populations. Race was identified with tribeness and related to a long gone past when the human kind merely created primitive social ties based on kinship of blood. However, what is really binding people is not biological criteria but spiritual semblance: communion of thought, feelings, and purpose. Color of skin or shape of skull do not determine a given populace’s brain capacities; in fact what counts only is cultural and civilization factors. For Romantics, in their thought a Eurocentric attitude dominated, although it was devoid of clearly racist connotations. Superior and inferior races, if existed at all, appeared only in the context of a level of development of civilization, that is, merely temporarily, because every race was able to achieve the level of the most developed races or even a higher one. Specyfika polskiej refleksji romantycznej nad rasą i pojęciami pokrewnymiSpecyfika polskiej refleksji romantycznej nad rasą miała jedną zasadniczą cechę – utożsamienie jej z plemiennością. Jeśli istniały rasy niższe i wyższe, to tylko w kontekście stopnia zaawansowania w rozwoju cywilizacyjnym, a zatem czasowo, gdyż każda z nich mogła dojść do poziomu tych najbardziej rozwiniętych, a nawet je przewyższyć.

Next to the language, history (or rather historical memory) or inhabited a territory of the common name, religion is considered as one of the determinants of ethnic identity. Ethnicity happens to be context-sensitive, because of certain ethnic characteristics such as language, customs, traditions, while religion manifests themselves in particular situations. Ethnicity – which is particularly evident in modern times – is multidimensional, because of many ways we can distinguish or define social groups. Religion, in turn, can be treated as a cultural system. This article deals with the role it plays religion (understood as a system of meanings, as a cultural system) in shaping the identity of an ethnic minority – Kashubs. Kashubians, an ethnic minority living in northern Poland, speak a regional – Kashubian. They are predominantly Catholic, and the Catholic religion plays a significant part in their lives (even today). This article presents the meaning of pilgrimage in the creation of Kashubian group identity.

Zamenhof was one of the few thinkers who noticed the impossibility of a just dispensation between ethnicities and religions in the Russian Empire. He aspired to present a social system where national actions could run in the most natural way and where no one has the right to rule on behalf of the nation. In Zamenhof ’s opinion multiculturalism composed of different ethnical groups inhabiting the same territory is a social phenomenon just as a class system. However, if class system relates to social antagonisms in the matter of possession, then ethnicity is the most important element of segmentation where neither ownership, class nor political criteria are distinctive as ethnicity is a natural and culturally established social bond. Zamenhof rejected all political Jewish programs of his age and created his own program called Hillelism (which was directed at Jews and which he later abandoned) which after modification was renamed as Humanitarianism. Precisely this proposition has many common characteristics with multiculturalism avant la letter.

The Catalan language is a language of romance group, closely related to Occitan. It is the only official language in Andorra, but it shares the status of official with Spanish in the Spanish Autonomous Communities of Catalonia, Valencia and Balearic Islands. It is not recognized as official in the Autonomous Community of Aragon in Spain, the Northern Catalonia in France and the Italian city of Alguer. However it is partially used in the latter as it remains the traditional language of the territory of the Catalan Countries. Depending on the formal status and history the situation of the language differs in many aspects including education, the possibility to use in the public situations and the knowledge. The article deals briefly with these questions on the basis of official statistics as well as the research of the author of the article.

The author states that nationalism is not connected directly with language, but for ethnicity it is one of the basic concepts. Language identity reveals not only from the status characteristics in the context of discourse within post-Soviet countries, but also as a way of influence on social consciousness. Finally, the paper discusses the way of how the meta-language shapes the thinking stereotype about identity.

This article aims at analyzing the linguistic aspect of ethnicity from the perspective of anthropological linguistics (Fedorak 2017). We interpret an ethnic stereotype as an idealized cognitive model (ICM) consisting of metonymic submodels containing properties stereotypically attributed to a given ethnic group. Each of the subset models can serve as a basis for creating an attributive ethnonym, i.e. an ethnic name that refers to a particular attribute assigned to the target group. Although contemporary attributive ethnonyms are mostly seen as dysphemisms, it is ultimately context—taking into account situational, social and cultural determinants—that determines their axiological charge.

The challenge of political instability in Nigeria has defied all solutions till date. The National Youth Service Scheme introduced in 1973 and the Federal Character principle entrenched in the Constitution since 1979, among others, have failed to engender peace and stability in the polity. Judging from this, this paper offers a possible explanation for the seeming failure of all efforts to combat the monster of political instability in Nigeria since independence. Given the fact that most Nigerian leaders and commoners alike are always quick in reverting to some proverbs to rationalize their actions or inactions; five of the most widely acclaimed causes of political instability in Nigeria were examined vis-à-vis some selected Yoruba proverbs. This was done against the backdrop of a Yoruba proverb: Owe lesin oro, oro lesin owe; b’oro ba sonu, owe la fi n waa. (“A proverb is like a horse: when the truth is missing, we use a proverb to find it”). A thorough analysis reveals that political instability in Nigeria has its philosophical foundations well entrenched in the spirit of selected Nigerian proverbs and concludes that political stability may continue to elude the country as long as citizens indulge in hiding under the cover of the letters and spirit of selected Nigerian proverbs to perpetrate evil in governance.

The aim of the study is to comprise in one work the cyclicality and ethnic and religious continuity of the Petroşani Depression between 1850-2011. In the second half of the 19th century, the depression was subjected to cycles of colonization that had consequences for the ethnic and religious structure. The ethnic and religious continuity was preserved throughout this period, even though after 1930, some of the settlers remigrated to their birthplace. Compared to the late 19-century censuses, the herds have fallen to 2011, but none of the ethnics and confessions have completely disappeared. The statistical data used were taken from the literature mentioned during the work and on the online platform of the National Institute of Statistics. The geographic information systems were used to achieve the geographical position map at the county and national level of the Petroşani Depression.

Opis:
The article points to the significance of emotion and nostalgia for the place of origin, which is passed on from generation to generation, in reinterpreting group identity within caste-based communities of the Konkani-speaking people in Kochi, South India. Konkanis came to Kochi from Goa in the sixteenth century. When they settled in Kochi, they established traditional communities localised around their temples. Nowadays, through formal and intentional actions of activists belonging to the Konkanis, the concept of their own identity has changed from understanding it on a local level — as a community of people they know from direct, everyday interactions to seeing it as an imagined community of people associated with Goa and speaking the Konkani language. On the one hand, these actions are based on an imaginary past and an alleged connection with the place which they came from five hundred years ago; on the other hand, they constitute an attempt to regain respect and social status among the local Malayalees, with whom Konkanis never fully assimilated. Emotions associated with the past are re-evoked, re-lived and internalized. They have a double function. Firstly, they serve as a strategy for achieving certain political objectives, that is, having the Konkani speaking people recognized as significant political actors. Secondly, they help determine what is important for the community. Understanding the nature of these intergroup relations as well as identity issues turns out to be possible by drawing on the emotional landscape in the field of research.

Analizowany materiał językowy pochodzi ze Słownika nazwisk mieszkańców Piotrkowa Trybunalskiego i okolic XIX–XX wieku, autorstwa E. Piotrowicz, A. Raszewskiej-Klimas i L. Pacan-Bonarek. Ukazana została różnorodność struktur onimicznych uwarunkowana podłożem historyczno-kulturowym. Poprzez pryzmat nazwiska omówiono zróżnicowanie etniczne mieszkańców dawnego Piotrkowa. Dokonano analizy etymologicznej i strukturalnej obcych nazwisk piotrkowian. Na niepolskie pochodzenie antroponimów wskazują zarówno podstawy derywacyjne (odetniczne, odmiejscowe, odimienne i odapelatywne), jak i struktura nazwisk. W nazwiskach piotrkowian widoczne są ślady rosyjskie, ukraińskie, białoruskie, łużyckie, pruskie, litewskie, czeskie, słowackie, węgierskie, austriackie, włoskie, jidysz i inne. Obce nazwiska mieszkańców Piotrkowa ulegały różnym procesom adaptacyjnym do polskiego systemu językowego.
The analysed linguistic material comes from „The Dictionary of the 19th and 20th-century Surnames of Piotrkow and Its Surroundings’ Residents” by E. Piotrowicz, A. Raszewska-Klimas and L. Pacan- -Bonarek. The variety of onymic structures conditioned to the historical-cultural ground has been presented. The ethnic variety of the town inhabitants is shown through the prism of the surname. The foreign surnames of Piotrkow’s inhabistants have undergone an etymological and structural analysis. The derivational bases (ethnic-based, place-based, name-based and appellative-based) as well as the surnames’ structures indicate the non-Polish origin of the anthroponyms. In the surnames of Piotrkow’s residents there are Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Lusatian, Prussian, Lithuanian, Czech, Slovakian, Hungarian, Austrian, Italian, Yiddish and other traces. The foreign surnames of Piotrkow’s residents went through various adaptation processes to the Polish language system.

This essay examines the racialized rhetoric in Fan Noli’s 1916 Othello translation and the racialized performance techniques employed in A.J. Ricko’s 1953 National Theatre of Albania production. Hoping to combat racial discrimination in Albania, Noli’s translation of Othello renders the Moor an exceptional Turk whose alienation in Venice was designed to mirror the Albanophobic experiences of Albanian immigrants. Moreover, the Albanian Othello can serve as a platform for addressing ethno-racial tensions between Albanians and Turks, northern and southern Albanians, and Albanians of color and white Albanians. Both Noli and Ricko believed there was an anti-racist power inherent within Shakespeare’s play. In the end, however, the race-based rhetoric in the Albanian language, the use of blackface make-up in performance, and the logic and rhetoric of Shakespeare’s play itself challenged these lofty goals for race-healing.

The article juxtaposes representations of mothers and daughters in selected African American novels that feature near-white female protagonists: W. W. Brown’s Clotel, Or the President’s Daughter (1853), Frances E. W. Harper’s Iola Leroy (1892), Charles Chesnutt’s The House behind the Cedars (1900), and Pauline Hopkins’s Hagar’s Daughter (1902). It explores the matrilineal opposition through a formalist close analysis of the melodramatic poetics of the texts and examines the political signifi cance of such aesthetic choices. The novels expose the American history of interracial relations through their foregrounding of the mulatta protagonists and numerous scenes of anagnorisis of their multiracial identities. Simultaneously, their “erotics of politics” rewards the choice of a black spouse and thus celebrates the emergence of the self-determined black community.
