The current market environment is affected by several fundamental changes. A large number of these affect manufacturing companies the most. They are forced to continuously reduce their costs, improve the quality of service to their customers and adapt to a highly competitive environment. However, environmental requirements for production processes have become increasingly important in recent years. These are underpinned by legislative changes that put enormous pressure on manufacturers. Often, environmental requirements can also determine the economic success of a manufacturer. The areas that have a significant environmental impact include metallurgical technologies. These are currently predominantly based on the use of coke, which is produced from high-quality hard coal. The mining of raw materials also has significant environmental impacts. The article deals with analysing downstream production processes regarding their environmental impact. These are the areas of mining, ore processing and iron and steel production. These areas can be seen as downstream production stages. Iron ore processing and iron and steel production often occur within a single production organisation. Therefore, a possible overall optimisation in handling environmental impacts and treating pollutants can be assumed. The secondary objective of the paper is to analytically assess the potential reuse of the produced waste in production processes. The article is based on the research results carried out in a selected metallurgical enterprise in the Czech Republic.

This paper emphasizes the role of universities in encouraging ecological initiatives for sustainable development. We characterized the origin of sustainability and its consistency with the Constitution of the Republic of Poland. Moreover, we present ecological education as the concept of lifelong learning in the spirit of respect for the natural world. The examples of pro-ecological higher education initiatives were described, such as Poznan School of Logistics (“EKO-LOG” programme), Jan Kochanowski University of Kielce and the University of Social and Medical Sciences in Warsaw (education of ethnic minorities), Andrzej Frycz-Modrzewski Krakow University and the University of Agriculture in Krakow (Friend of the National Park educational program) as well as the AGH University of Science and Technology (continuing education). It has been shown that schools and universities play a major role in environmental education not only for children, but also adults. It is worth mentioning that the potential and clout of universities should be continuously employed in the environmental movement.

Sustainable development is closely related to animal welfare. Animal welfare is defined as a condition in which the animal cope with the conditions in which it lives. The animal is in good condition if (as scientific evidence suggests) is healthy, does not suffer discomfort, is well-nourished, safe, able to express innate behavior, does not feel pain, fear or anxiety.The issue of animal welfare has been regulated in a number of legal acts. At the EU level, these issues are primarily regulated by the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union and a series of directives. At the Polish level, environmental protection has been regulated in the Constitution of the Republic of Poland, without mentioning animal rights. This matter is regulated in detail by the Act on the Protection of Animal Rights.De lege ferneda, we should consider greater guarantees related to compliance with the law and sanctions related to inhumane farming of livestock or inhuman killing.

International trade and globalization are among the two most important prerequisites for the country’s economic development. The country’s active involvement in world trade leads to greater openness exacerbates many contradictions that are summarized in the principles of the economy, in particular the face trade-offs (between efficiency and equity). Despite the fact that these issues become accustomed to being considered in the socio-economic, the exhaustion of natural resources requires its implementation to the ecological dimension. There could be pointed several aspects of environmental dimension of international economics: implementation of borrowed outdated technologies and the attraction of investments by the availability of cheap labor; dependence on the mining and export of minerals and raw materials; filling the internal market with cheap and insufficient quality goods ctr. Thereby the participation in contemporary international economic relations needs to take into accounts also the environmental aspects and ecological factors for the effective development in the long-term perspective.

Financial markets are undergoing a transformation process, which is determined by the growing impact of non-financial risk, particularly the threat of climate change. Financial institutions, taking into account the effects of climate risk on their operations, take several adjustment measures to reduce the impact of this risk. These activities result from the applicable regulations and legal conditions on the one hand and initiatives undertaken by and for financial institutions on the other. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a strong stimulus determining activity for the climate. The implementation of the SDGs is monitored at the level of Member States. The SDGs are integrated into public policies, and their assumptions are present in the decisions of financial and non-financial sector entities, which affects the allocation and the flow of financial capital. The article aims to show changes in the functioning of financial markets in the conditions of climate change risk and also through the prism of sustainable development goals. The paper uses the triangulation method (apart from conventional research methods).

The next generation of managers emerges as a consequence of the environmental changes that affect the world economies. In this paper is presented the profile of the new type of manager adjusted to the current world trends: the ecomanager. While ecomanagement refers to strategies implemented to minimize or eliminate the adverse effects of human activities on the environment, ecomanagers are those develop and implement environmental policies in all the management activities and in the entire workflow of the organization. In this paper is presented an example of implementing ecomanagement in a Korean shipping company and there are presented specific ecomanagement strategies and actions regarding both onshore and offshore activities.

Since the crisis of the real economy in 2008, an intense discussion about the need for changes in the economy, supported by a number of declarations on the global scale, has been developed. The analysis of the causes and effects of the economic downturn and the challenges of the future have had a huge impact on this state of affairs. As a result, some states have taken action to remedy the situation. Many of them were aimed at structural changes in production, consumption and environmentally friendly investment. At the same time, the concept of "low carbon economy" and "green economy" gained importance. The aim of this paper is to present the role of the state in the economy in terms of creating conditions for a green economy. The thesis of the publication is: implementation of structural changes related with creating a green economy requires involvement of the state.

W artykule przedstawiono wieloaspektowe ujęcie urbanizacji w kontekście zrównoważonego rozwoju samorządowej jednostki terytorialnej. Najogólniej ujmując urbanizacja pojmowana jest jako proces koncentracji ludności w miastach. Proces ten wpływa na stan środowiska przyrodniczego. W artykule podano przykłady oddziaływania poszczególnych kategorii urbanizacji na środowisko. W celu ustalenia skali i dynamiki zmian dodatkowo, korzystając z ogólnodostępnych danych statystycznych, przedstawiono sytuację w województwie śląskim.
The article presents some aspects of the urbanization process in sustainable development of municipal activities. Generalizing urbanization is defined as the concentration process ofthe inhabitants in towns and cities. The process influences environment. In the article some examples of the influences were presented for particular categories of urbanization. Moreoverfor establishment ofthe scalę and dynamism of changes analyses for Silesian voivodship on the based of statistic data was realized.

Od czasu kiedy powołana przez Zgromadzenie Ogólne Narodów Zjednoczonych Światowa Komisja do spraw Środowiska i Rozwoju w 1987 roku wprowadziła do oficjalnego obiegu termin "rozwój zrównoważony" minęło 20 lat. Podczas konferencji na szczycie ONZ pod hasłem Środowisko i Rozwój w Rio de Janeiro w 1992 r oficjalnie przyjęto filozofię rozwoju zrównoważonego jako wykładnię dalszego rozwoju ludzkości. Uzgodniony wtedy dokument Globalny Plan Działania Agenda 21 w paragrafie 36 zobowiązuje wszystkie państwa-strony porozumienia do "Promowania nauczania, kształtowania świadomości i szkolenia w zakresie rozwoju zrównoważonego i ochrony środowiska". Przy przygotowywaniu podsumowania osiągnięć w 10 lat po Rio przeprowadzono analizę wdrażania zasad rozwoju zrównoważonego w krajach sygnatariuszach Agendy 21. Wyniki prezentowane podczas kolejnego Szczytu ONZ na Temat Rozwoju Zrównoważonego w 2002 roku w Johannesburgu wskazywały, że również w dziedzinie edukacji i społecznej świadomości postępy są mniejsze niż należałoby się spodziewać. Dlatego też powierzono UNESCO przygotowania do oficjalnego ogłoszenia na lata 2005-2014 ogólnoświatowej Dekady Edukacji dla Rozwoju Zrównoważonego. W grudniu 2002 Zgromadzenie Ogólne NZ podjęło stosowną decyzję zobowiązując wszystkie państwa do przystąpienia do Dekady. Celem tej wielkiej międzynarodowej inicjatywy jest promowanie takiej edukacji, która będzie służyła wdrażaniu zasad rozwoju zrównoważonego kładąc nacisk zarówno na aspekty środowiskowe jak i ekonomiczne i społeczne oraz ich pełną współzależność. Dekada ma być wzmocnieniem i inspiracją dla wspólnego poszukiwania nowych programów i zadań oraz ustalania nowych standardów edukacji niezbędnych w stawianiu czoła podstawowym problemom ludzkości. Rozwiązywaniu wielu z tych problemów są również poświęcone równoległe programy UNESCO, które wspólnie się uzupełniając stawiają sobie zadania określone jako Cele Milenijne ONZ. W artykule omówiono dotychczasowe osiągnięcia i problemy we wdrażaniu Dekady EZR prezentowane na międzynarodowych konferencjach (w Bonn w 2006 r. i Berlinie w 2007) organizowanych przez UNESCO. Przedstawione są też polskie inicjatywy związane z przebiegiem Dekady min. działania Polskiej Grupy Roboczej do spraw Dekady EZR powstałej z inspiracji Centrum Badań nad Środowiskiem Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego i objętej honorowym patronatem Polskiego Komitetu UNESCO.
It has been twenty years since the Commission on Environment and Development established in 1987 by the UN General Assembly has introduced the term of "sustainable development". During the UN Summit Conference launched under the title "Environment and Development" in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, the philosophy of sustainable development has been officially adopted as a basis for the future development of human population. The agreed document - Global Action Plan Agenda 21 in its paragraph 36 obliges all party-states to agree on promoting education, developing awareness and training in the area of sustainable development and environmental protection. While summarizing the 10-year accomplishments achieved since the Rio Conference, an analysis of the sustainable development principles implementation has been carried out for the signatory countries of the Agenda 21. The results presented at the Johannesburg 2002 Summit on Sustainable Development showed that also in the area of education and rising public awareness the advancements are less successful than originally planned. Therefore UNESCO was requested to announce a worldwide Decade on Sustainable Development Education for the years 2005-2014. In December 2002 the UN General Assembly made a decision committing all states to join the Decade initiative.The objective of this international effort is to promote education that facilitates implementation of the sustainable development principles with special attention to the environmental and economic aspects as well as their mutual relationship. The decade is aimed to become a support and inspiration for seeking new education programmes and standards needed to face the challenges of the key problems of humanity. There is also a number of parallel, complementary UNESCO programmes which jointly address the tasks are referred to as UN Millenium Goals The article presents the up-to-date achievements and issues in the implementation of the Decade initiative presented at the international UNESCO conferences in Bonn in 2006 and Berlin in 2007. Polish initiatives related to the Decade are also presented including the activities of the Polish Working Group on the Decade SDE established by the Center of Environmental Research at the Warsaw University and under the honorary patronage of the Polish Committee of UNESCO.

The work consists of two interrelated parts. The first one presents general issues relating to sustainable development. There are examples of the road investments, in which the problems arising from the lack of a general approach to environmental principles and consequently sustainable construction occurred. In the second part, on the examples of culverts and bridges, selected technical cases are discussed. The aim of the paper is to characterize the inconsistencies appearing during the bridge design process and maintenance in accordance to environmental categories. Several examples of the road-bridge investments carried out in the last decade have created the basis to formulate some opinions and questions. The difference between the approach of bridge engineers and that of environmental ones to the concept of animal transition is shown on the grounds of implemented technical and environmental standards. The existing problems are of dual nature, the first group being very general aspects i.e. concerning the concept of ecology, while the other one involves detailed tasks, e.g. shaping the image of a bridge. Several questions of great significance have been formulated and addressed to ecologists. The answers are indispensable for bridge engineers to solve technical aspects of the proper, sustainable design of environment-friendly bridges. Last but not least, the suggestion to use bridges as places for monitoring the environment in their surroundings is presented. This research work might be crucial for further good cooperation of bridge engineers and environmental ones.
Praca zawiera dwie powiązane ze sobą części. W pierwszej zaprezentowano ogólne zagadnienia z zakresu zrównoważonego rozwoju. Przywołano przykłady inwestycji drogowych, przy których wystąpiły problemy wynikające z braku zrozumienia uwarunkowań zrównoważonego rozwoju, co przełożyło się na problemy budowlane. W części drugiej, stosując przykłady z budownictwa mostowego, poddano dyskusji wybrane problemy techniczne. Celem pracy jest omówienie nieścisłości w kategoriach środowiskowych, pojawiających się w trakcie projektowania mostów, rzutujących na ich utrzymanie. Kilka przykładów spośród prowadzonych w ostatnie dekadzie inwestycji drogowych stworzyło platformę do formułowania opinii i stawiania pytań. Różnice między podejściami inżynierów mostowych a środowiskowych pojawiają się wyraziście przy projektowaniu przejść dla zwierząt. Przedstawiono je, wykorzystując stosowane standardy techniczne i postulaty ekologiczne. Istniejące sprzeczności są dwojakiego rodzaju. Z jednej strony obowiązują bardzo ogólne zasady ekologiczne, podczas gdy z drugiej występują elementarne zadania projektowe, czyli np. projektowanie geometrii lub szerzej – obrazu mostu. W tym szczegółowym zakresie sformułowano kilka ważnych pytań adresowanych do ekologów. Odpowiedzi na te pytania są kluczowe dla projektantów, po to by rozwiązywać problemy mostowe właściwie, tj. by projektować funkcjonalne, zrównoważone i przyjazne środowiskowo obiekty drogowe. Na koniec poruszono problem monitorowania środowiska, z wykorzystaniem przepustów, mostów i wiaduktów. Powstałe zbiory danych mogą utworzyć bazę do prowadzenia badań o charakterze ilościowym, a takie wyniki będą owocować dobrą współpracą inżynierów środowiskowych i mostowych.

Autorka uważa, ze artykuł był zamierzoną prowokacją, a twierdzenie, że zrównoważony rozwój jest społeczną praktyką dążenia do wszechogarniającej trwałości świata dobrego dla wszystkich form życia, które się nań składają jest obezwładniającym nieporozumieniem.
The author initiates polemics with Maria Mendel, Małgorzata Puchowska and Sylwester Zielka - authors of the article entitled "Sustainable development: "Bewitching the world" still beneficial for everybody?" published in the issue no. 3/2008 of "Problemy Ekologii". The author claims that the article was an intended provocation and a statement that sustainable development is a social practice aimed at an all-embracing sustainability of the world beneficial for all forms of life which are part of it is an overpowering misunderstanding.

Niniejszy artykuł przybliża pojęcie zrównoważonego rozwoju stosowanego w inwestycjach drogowych oraz jest wyrazem oczekiwania, że rozwiązania zawarte w systemie Greenroads zyskają popularność oraz uznanie również w krajach europejskich, w tym w Polsce.
Sustainable development become more and more popular issue, used worldwide. Its assumption can be found in the construction industry, resulting in certification of buildings, such as LEED certificate (well known in Poland) and in the road sector, for which, in the U.S. was developed the Greenroads rating system. This system is still improved and expanded by the authors. It brings many benefits to the environment, users and investors that is why it has become increasingly popular within the United States.This article presents the concept of sustainable development used in road investments and reflects the expectation that the solutions contained in the Greenroads rating system will gain popularity and recognition in European countries including Poland.

Artykuł składa się z 3 części. Pierwsza prezentuje oczekiwania społeczne w aspekcie globalnych celów ochrony środowiska. Druga omawia zobowiązania akcesyjne oraz przyszłe wyzwania w zakresie ochrony środowiska. Trzecia cześć poświęcona jest popularyzacji filozofii zrównoważonego rozwoju z wzajemnymi powiązaniami. Artykuł opisuje sytuację po rewizji Strategii Lizbońskiej (cele do 2010 r.) oraz Strategii Zrównoważonego Rozwoju UE, przed debatą sejmową nt. Polityki Ekologicznej Państwa na lata 2007 - 2010 z uwzględnieniem perspektywy na lata 2011 - 2014 oraz przed weryfikacją polskiej strategii zrównoważonego rozwoju.
The article consists of three parts. The first presents the aspirations of Polish society as these concern global objectives of environment protection, while the next describes accession commitments and new challenges relating to environment protection. The final part is devoted to the popularization of the philosophy of sustainable development in all its dimensions. The article describes the situation following revision of the Lisbon Strategy (objectives to 2010) as well as the EU's Sustainable Development Strategy, but also prior to the parliamentary debate on the National Environmental Policy for the years 2007-2010 with account taken of prospects for the years 2011-2014, as well as prior to the verification of the Polish Sustainable Development Strategy.

Opis:
The awareness of the society that it is responsible for what the nature looks like, as well as for developing human relations, results in the popularization of the idea of sustainable development. The aim of thos study is to present an analysis of the literature on the subject focused on the description of the reality and possible directions of changes in education, considering it as global challenges in three aspects of sustainable development: the economic, ecological and social. The greatest challenge today is to create a multidimensional view of a constantly deepening social and environmental crisis. The change that should be made in education should concern the processes that are aimed at combining the three aspects and at balancing their importance. The essence of education for sustainable development was shown in shaping the values, empathy and awareness that are needed to act for society, as well as the environment and the economy on a global scale.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie kierunków zmian relacji gospodarka-środowisko oraz identyfikacja powodujących je czynników w Polsce w okresie transformacji ustrojowej. Cele szczegółowe zmierzają do wyjaśnienia kierunków i przyczyn zmian presji systemu społeczno-gospodarczego na otoczenie przyrodnicze, określenia motywacji podejmowania działań reakcyjnych przez ten system oraz wskazania czynników decydujących o zmienności stanu środowiska w Polsce w badanym okresie. Ważne jest ustalenie, czy system społeczno-gospodarczy zmierza w kierunku trwałego i zrównoważonego rozwoju.
In Poland, during the transition period, economy-environment system has moved towards the demands of sustainable development. An anthropogenic pressure on the environment has been reduced and a state of environment has signifiycantly improved. These effects were achieved thanks to a strong response of socio-economic system. Changes of pressure, state of environment and response of socio-economic system allow to distinguish four phases of relationships between economy and environment during the transition period, defined as: reduce of pressure, first stabilization, fluctuation, second stabilization. There are five key factors which influenced on the economy-environment system and moved it between successive phases: changes in economy structure, institutional changes, technological and organizational changes and changes in environmental awareness and consumer behavior on the market.
