Opis:
We study topological properties of a two-dimensional decorated lattice using entanglement spectrum and trace index. Using these measures, we distinguish various phases of the system predicted recently, including the quantum spin Hall effect and quantum anomalous Hall effect. The topologically trivial and non-trivial phases are identified, with assignment of a Chern number to each of the bands.

Opis:
Since 1980, more than 10 or so triplet superconductors have been discovered. Now we can put them into two separate classes. Type A consists of e.g. $(TMTSF)_{2}PF_{6}$, $(TMTSF)_{2}ClO_{4}$, $UPt_3$, $Sr_{2}RuO_{4}$, $PrOs_{4}Sb_{12}$. These triplet superconductors are characterized with the extreme smallness of the spin-orbit coupling energy $E_{so}$ (≪ Δ, where Δ is the superconducting gap). Also like superfluid $\text{}^{3}He-A$, the order parameter of these superconductors are characterized by l^ (the chiral vector) and d^ (the spin vector). In these superconductors, an Abrikosov vortex splits into a pair of half quantum vortices at low temperatures. Type $A_{1}$ comprises most of non-centrosymmetric triplet superconductors discovered recently, e.g. $CePt_{3}Si$, $CeIrSi_3$, $CeRhSi_3$, and $Li_{2}Pt_{3}B$. They are characterized by l^ and $d_{1}^\wedge + id_{2}^\wedge $ like superfluid $\text{}^{3}He-A_{1}$. The spin-orbit coupling energy $E_{so}$ is extremely large $E_{so}≈ 10^3 K$. Therefore, as noted by Frigeri et al., the Fermi surface splits for the up-spin one and the down-spin one. However, contrary to Frigeri et al., the superconductivity should occupy only the larger Fermi surface (say for spin-up). The other Fermi surface remains in the normal state. Also in type $A_1$ superconductors, an Abrikosov vortex does not split into a pair of half quantum vortices. Further all thase triplet superconductors (both type A and type $A_1$) harbor the zero mode or the Majorana fermion attached to each vortex, of which implication should be further explored.

Opis:
Fractional quantum Hall effect is a remarkable behaviour of correlated electrons, observed exclusively in two dimensions, at low temperatures, and in strong magnetic fields. The most prominent fractional quantum Hall state occurs at Landau level filling factor ν = 1/3 and it is described by the famous Laughlin wave function, which (apart from the trivial Gaussian factor) is an example of Jack polynomial. Fermionic Jack polynomials also describe another pair of candidate fractional quantum Hall states: Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states, believed to form at the ν = 1/2 and 3/5 fillings of the second Landau level, respectively. Bosonic Jacks on the other hand are candidates for certain correlated states of cold atoms. We examine here a continuous family of fermionic Jack polynomials whose special case is the Laughlin state as approximate wave functions for the 1/3 fractional quantum Hall effect.

Quantum mechanical properties of the graphene are, as a rule, treated within the Hilbert space formalism. However a different approach is possible using the geometric algebra, where quantum mechanics is done in a real space rather than in the abstract Hilbert space. In this article the geometric algebra is applied to a simple quantum system, a single valley of monolayer graphene, to show the advantages and drawbacks of geometric algebra over the Hilbert space approach. In particular, 3D and 2D Euclidean space algebras $ Cl_{3, 0}$ and $Cl_{2, 0}$ are applied to analyze relativistic properties of the graphene. It is shown that only three-dimensional $Cl_{3, 0}$ rather than two-dimensional $Cl_{2, 0}$ algebra is compatible with a relativistic flatland.

Opis:
The breakdown of the integer quantum Hall effect at high currents sometimes occurs as a series of regular steps in the dissipative voltage drop measured along the Hall bar. The steps were first seen clearly in two Hall bars used to maintain the US Resistance Standard, but have also been reported in other devices. It is proposed that the origin of the steps can be understood in terms of an instability in the dissipationless flow at high electron drift velocities. The instability is induced by impurity- or defect-related inter-Landau level scattering processes in local microscopic regions of the Hall bar. Electron-hole pairs (magneto-excitons) are generated in the quantum Hall fluid in these regions and that the electronic motion can be envisaged as a quantum analogue of the von Karman vortex street which forms when a classical fluid flows past an obstacle.

The properties of very thin (up to 16Å diameter) wires, cut out from the bulk in either zinc-blende or wurtzite material, are studied theoretically. In the total energy calculations we use ab initio methods and consider three different crystallographic growth axes for the zinc-blende and one for the wurtzite structure. We show that the most stable zinc-blende nanowires are those growing along (111) direction, however, the wurtzite structure is found to be energetically more favorable than the zinc-blende for wires of the same diameter. In addition, the band structure of the wires was calculated.

We report on exact-diagonalization studies of correlated many-electron states in the half-filled Landau levels of graphene, including pseudospin (valley) degeneracy. We demonstrate that the polarized Fermi sea of non-interacting composite fermions remains stable against a pairing transition in the lowest two Landau levels. However, it undergoes spontaneous depolarization, which is unprotected owing to the lack of single-particle pseudospin splitting. These results suggest the absence of the Pfaffian phase in graphene.

We used a theory of thermo-hydrodynamics in quantum Hall system observed on a two-dimensional system in high magnetic fields at low temperatures, to investigate the electron temperature in the linear response regime. The variation of electron temperature exhibits an antisymmetric distribution of the incompressible strips. According to this result, we obtain effects of the electron temperature on the current density distribution using a Thomas-Fermi-Poisson approximation. We observe that incompressible strips change with increasing and/or decreasing the electron temperature with regard to the lattice temperature.

Opis:
nextnano$\text{}^{3}$ is a simulation tool that aims at providing global insight into the basic physical properties of realistic three-dimensional mesoscopic semiconductor structures. It focuses on quantum mechanical properties such as the global electronic structure, optical properties, and the effects of electric and magnetic fields for virtually any geometry and combination of semiconducting materials. For the calculation of the carrier dynamics a drift-diffusion model based on a quantum-mechanically calculated density is employed. In this paper we present an overview of the capabilities of nextnano$\text{}^{3}$ and discuss some of the main equations that are implemented into the code. As examples, we first discuss the strain tensor components and the piezoelectric effect associated with a compressively strained InAs layer for different growth directions, secondly, we calculate self-consistently the quantum mechanical electron density of a Double Gate MOSFET, then we compare the intersubband transitions in a multi-quantum well structure that have been obtained with a single-band effective mass approach and with an 8-band k·p model, and finally, we calculate the energy spectrum of a structure in a uniform magnetic field.
