    The relation between art and the idea of natural selection makes the key issue of this paper. The author examines how Charles Darwin's conc ept of evolution might have affected the sphere of aesthetics. However, the author arguments against understanding of art as a side product of human progress and takes it as an independent form of human agency. The critique of various evolutionary standpoints laid out in this article holds to the standpoint that we cannot recreate with other means the moments of pleasure delivered by art. Thus it is extremely important to understand art as a form of human creativity and a neces sary part of our existence beyond biological determinism stressed out by many evolutionary thinkers.

    This article presents selected aspects of potential intersections of archeology and art, the potential resulting from it, and also threats. We presented our interpretation of the perception of this issue, which is from the archaeologist’s perspective. We referred to specific examples that refer both to our experience resulting from more than a year of cooperation between the Faculty of Archeology of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań and the Faculty of Art Education and Curatorial Studies of the University of Arts in Poznań, as well as the external sources. An attempt was made to answer the question – how archaeologists can use the knowledge and experience of artists. We focused on the example of museology and the popularization of archaeological knowledge, how to make it more attractive, and to facilitate public reception. At the same time, we presented our observations on the examples of the use of archeology by artists as inspiration.

Aesthetics is heading towards the field of post-disciplinary performance studies, allowing the creation of actions that blur the boundary between science and art in the humanities. From its function as guardian of the rules of decorum, aesthetics has become the creator of acts expressing reality in the categories of performance.

    W artykule zinterpretowany został wiersz Urszuli Kozioł Tysiąc i jedna noc, pochodzący z debiutanckiego arkusza Gumowe klocki (1957). Interpretacja uwypukla autotematyczny aspekt utworu i akcentuje znaczenie odwołania do baśni (postać Szeherezady). Sztuka tworzenia jest przedstawiona jako sztuka przetrwania, próba porządkowania chaosu i zrozumienia rzeczywistości pomimo świadomości śmierci. W omówieniu wiersza wyeksponowana zostaje właściwa mu ambiwalencja: podkreślenie wagi słowa przy jednoczesnym dystansie wobec jego gloryfikacji. Autorka artykułu porusza problem potrzeby i wszechobecności narracji.
    The article offers an interpretation of Urszula Kozioł’s Tysiąc i jedna noc (A Thousand and One Nights), originally released as part of the poet’s debut, Gumowe klocki (Rubber Blocks, 1957). This interpretation highlights the self-referential aspect of the work and accents the meaning of its references to the tale of Scheherezade. The act of creation is presented as the art of survival, and attempt to order chaos and understand reality in spite the awareness of death. In the discussion of the poem, its inherent ambivalence is brought into relief: its emphasis on the importance of the word and simultaneous distance toward the word’s glorification. The author considers the problem of the need for and ubiquity of narrative.

    Polish contemporary drama (which is represented by a range of authors, from Tadeusz Różewicz and Sławomir Mrożek, Janusz Głowacki, Wiesław Myśliwski, Eustachy Rylski, Marek Koterski and Tadeusz Słobodzianek to Przemysław Wojcieszek, Michał Walczak, Piotr Tomaszuk, Tomasz Man and Dorota Masłowska) seems to be an integral part and a special, local manifestation of profound changes that have taken place in the European and American drama of the 20th and 21st centuries. Samuel Beckett, Eugène Ionesco, Tennessee Williams, Harold Pinter, John Osborne and Edward Albee influenced Polish dramaturgy, i.e. its general concept and philosophy, in many ways. They were pioneers and patrons of this transformation, just as Miron Białoszewski was in Poland. New Polish dramaturgy continues to go in this direction while looking for modern means of theatrical expression. Marek Hendrykowski examines and describes twenty-one contemporary dramas that are collected in two volumes titled Trans/formacja. Dramat polski po 1989 roku [Trans/formation: An Anthology of Polish Contemporary Drama after 1989], which were edited by Jacek Kopciński. The author of this article searches for features and “common places” (loci communes) that are typical of this form of art.

    Individuals with intellectual disabilities exist fully and authentically through works of art they have created. The universalism of the language of art happens to be for them a form of expression_ and, frequently, the only form of dialogue led with the outside world. Owing to art, an intellectually disabled person has a chance to go beyond the frames of his/her hermetic world. Art can be an import_ant stimulus influencing the social perception of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Furthermore, all the activities carried out in social, artistic and therapeutic fields can support the process of social inclusion of people with intellectual deficits.

    The objective of the paper is to analyze Zbigniew Libera’s Lego. Concentration Camp from 1996, which is considered to be one of the most important Polish works of art in the 1990s. Lego exemplifies the problem of the politicality of art which consists of art’s involvement in politics. The considerations on the permeation of the fields of politics and esthetics constitute a sig- nificant part of the work of French philosopher Jacques Ranciere, whose concepts provide the theoretical foundations for the analysis of Libera’s Lego. The juxtaposition of toys with the symbol of the Holocaust raises questions about the role of art in uncovering the discourse of power as understood by Michel Foucault, the influence of public policies (cultural, educational policies and the policy towards the past) on art and the borders of commercialization and trivialization of the symbols of collective memory. Libera’s Lego is a transgressive work, representing the trend of so-called critical art in modern Polish art. The artist used artistic methods to break the cultural taboo that concerns the presentation of the non-presentable. Libera showed the past and the present, the former by re- ferring to the topic of the Holocaust, indicating the pragmatism of the Nazi system, and the lat- ter by uncovering the laws of the teaching process, carried out by means of repeating patterns. Above all, however, Libera showed that artistic activity can be a form of expressing interests and can influence the shape of public policies.

    “The Preface” was finished after the work on “Reflections of a unpolitical Man” and explains the reasons behind its creation. Thomas Mann decided that armed conflict between Germany and the West was the result of different perspectives. Democracy damages the world order and German values. The greatest advocate of democracy among Germans is the civilization’s man of letters. Mann undermines the value of his art and gives reasons for the disagreements with this revolutio-nary knowledge, which he calls “The new Pathos”. He develops the theory of the greatness of Germans as a nonpolitical nationality, recognizing Martin Luther as a reflection of this theory. He mentions the great minds of the 18th and 19th centuries to emphasize the most crucial differen- ces, seeing in himself a child of the 19th century. In conclusion, Mann claims that his opposition to democracy hastens its victory.

Autor dokonuje redefinicji problematyki zależności łączących i dzielących terminy „przeszłość”, „historia” i „mit”, wskazując na odmienność poetyki różniących się między sobą sposobów i form narracji historycznej oraz poznawczą użyteczność kategorii znaku, struktury semantycznej i funkcji znaczeniowej w refleksji badawczej nad wszelkiego rodzaju artystycznymi i nieartystycznymi przekazami dotyczącymi przeszłości.
    The text examines the complex relations between the past, history, and historical myth, in an interdisciplinary perspective, combining narratology, cognitive studies and cultural anthropology. The author redefines the interdependencies between the terms “the past,” “history,” and “myth,” pointing to the differences between the poetics of different historical narratives, as well as the cognitive potential of the category of the sign, semantic structure, and semantic function in multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research on artistic and non-artistic accounts of the past.

    In the following paper, a question was asked if archaeology needs art, precisely – in what way is this art needed? The author determines the value of the artistic act since we want to participate in this experiencing and even co-create this experience. Another issue is what we have from the contact with the art. The art is treated as continuously changing which imposes the transformations in the definition. The answer points out the proper understanding of the art functions, which is as using. It is significant when indicating various connections and transfers between art and other academic disciplines. It helps to notice mutual connections and relations, also with archaeology.

    W artykule przedstawiono koncepcję kontratypu sztuki oraz ocenę jej zasadności poprzez skonfrontowanie z przestępstwem obrazy uczuć religijnych. W tym celu zostały przywołane i porównane stanowiska różnych przedstawicieli doktryny – zarówno przeciwników, jak i zwolenników wprowadzenia tej konstrukcji w prawie polskim. Rozważania dotyczą konstrukcji kontratypu sztuki oraz ewentualnych skutków jego wprowadzenia. Konkluzją jest myśl, że wprowadzenie okoliczności wyłączającej bezprawność nie jest zasadne, ponieważ może się to odbyć w ramach już istniejących konstrukcji w prawie karnym, a ponadto prowadziłoby to do nieuzasadnionego uprzywilejowania artystów, w szczególności w zakresie konfliktów sztuki z wiarą, będącą jednym z najbardziej fundamentalnych praw człowieka.
    Presented article depicts the concept of justification of art as well as an assessment of its validity through comparison with the offence against religious feelings. Therefore standpoints of both the supporters and opponents of introducing this particular justification concept into the Polish legal doctrine are cited and collated. The construction of the justification of art as is and potential effects of its implementation into the Polish law are being discussed as well. Ultimately, the article concludes that introduction of this particular exception excluding the unlawfulness is not justified since it could be done within the limits of already existing constructions in the penal law. Moreover, its interpolation could lead to artists’ unjustified privilege, especially in case of a conflict with religion being one of the most fundamental human rights.

    The work entitled “Reflections of an Unpolitical Man”, written during World War I, includes an essay against the Western states. Thomas Mann compares democratic countries and the societies created after the French Revolution with the German concept of society and a country based on conservative values. Equality is set against hierarchy, the individual against the community, and a secular perspective against a religious one. Defiance of the West is based on Protestantism. The references to Nietzsche and Schopenhauer, in agreement with Darwin's theory of evolution, are advanced by the West as an argument for the conflict between rationalism and irrationalism. At the end of Thomas Mann’s work, this conflict is solved by the “principle of irony”, which gives the author the opportunity to reconcile himself with the concept of democracy. This also dominated his future work.

    Theodor W. Adorno uważał, że „muzeum i mauzoleum łączy nie tylko skojarzenie fonetyczne. Muzea są jak rodzinne groby dzieł sztuki”. Autor szkicu dochodzi do wniosku, że do tego zestawu podobnie brzmiących słów można dopisać trzecie – liceum. W szkolnych programach i podręcznikach gromadzi się teksty kultury z jakichś powodów uznane za ważne i wartościowe oraz układa w rozmaitych porządkach (na poziomie liceum głównie w porządku chronologicznym). Ta „przymusowa zbiorowa egzystencja”, zrozumiała z perspektywy akademickiej (historia sztuki, historia literatury), z perspektywy ucznia często nie ma sensu. Autor szkicu zastanawia się, dlaczego tak się dzieje i jak spowodować, by liceum nie zamieniało się ani muzeum, ani tym bardziej w mauzoleum. Jak spowodować, by to, co uznane za wartość przez specjalistów, mogło stać się wartościowe również dla niespecjalistów, poddawanych w szkole edukacji ogólnej. Szukając rozwiązań, autor szkicu wychodzi od rozważań na temat fenomenu sztuki, krytycznie ocenia najnowszą podstawę programową dla liceum, odwołuje się do prac specjalistów z różnych dziedzin (m.in. historia sztuki, socjologia, dydaktyka, filozofia) i – przede wszystkim – do samych dzieł literackich i malarskich.
    Theodor W. Adorno claimed that ‘‘museum and mausoleum are related not only phonetically. Museums are like family tombs of artwork.” The author of this text comes to the conclusion that this set of sound-alike words can be topped up with another word – high school (Polish: liceum). The ones responsible for completing school curricula and textbooks fill them up with texts of culture for some reasons considered important and valuable. They also segregate them according to various order (on high school level it is mainly a chronological order). This ‘‘compulsory collective existence”, which might be understood if we take an academic context into consideration (history of art, history of literature), very often does not make sense to high school students. The author of this text wonders why it is the way it is and what to do so that high school does not change into museum, and even mausoleum. And how to make high school students appreciate the values acknowledged by experts. Looking for the solutions, the author starts with reflections on art, expresses a negative opinion on the new high school curriculum, refers to works of experts on various fields (e.g. history of art, sociology, didactics, philosophy) and – most of all – refers to literary works and paintings.
