Opis:
In this study, DPPH radical scavenging activity, ABTS radical cation decolorization assay, FRAP reducing power, total phenolic content, total flavonoid content and phenolic compounds of leaves of plants, grown in Afyon/Turkey were investigated. These plants were poppy, daisy, dandelion, manger, chickweed, black chicory and white chicory. Phenolic acids including gallic acid, ferulic acid, chlorogenic acid, coumaric acid, ellagic acid, vanilic acid, caffeic acid, cinnamic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid and flavonoids including catechin, apigenin, naringin, rutin and quercetin amounts in leaves were determined. Among plants leaves, leaves of daisy and manger had statistically highest DPPH value and leaves of poppy and dandelion had statistically highest ABTS value, while leaves of White chicory had statistically highest FRAP value, total phenolic content and total flavonoid content. Leaves of black chicory and white chicory had higher phenolic compounds compared to that of other plants. These results suggest the using of these leaves as sources of natural antioxidants.

Opis:
The aim of this project was to compare the effect of Rhizobacterium rhizogenes infection, and subsequent hairy root induction, on the antioxidant capacity of in vitro root cultures derived from two tomato cultivars differing in flavonoid biosynthetic potential. Tomatoes and especially processed tomatoes are rich in lycopene ,which is one of the most powerful antioxidants. Antioxidan capasity of normal (wild) roots from Kumato and Cherry seeds and transformed roots from infected cotyledons with agrobacterium was determined by the DPPH metod. The results presented in this paper indicate that the normal roots extracts and extracellular had higher antioxidants capasity than transformed roots but antioxidant capasity was higher in the extracellular than in the roots extract. Standard deviation was higher in extracellular than roots extract. This experiment was valuable because antioxidants protect human body against oxidative stress which can cause many diseases such as diabetes and accelerate the aging process of the organism.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine total phenolic and flavonoid contents and to evaluate the antioxidant activities of two honeys and one propolis sample, collected from the region of Laghouat (South of Algeria). Total phenolic content were determined by using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent as gallic acid equivalent, while flavonoids content was assessed by means of the AlCl3 method as Rutin equivalent. Antioxidant activities of the honeys and propolis were examined by two different methods, namely, scavenging of free radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and reducing power. The antioxidant activities were compared with standard antioxidants such as Ascorbic acid, BHT and Trolox. The highest level of phenolic was 2385 mg Gallic acid per 100g sample, the highest level of flavonoid was 379 mg Rutin per 100g sample, while the highest protein content was 1177 mg per 100g sample, DPPH (0.026 mg/ml) and TEAC (0.0015) were detected especially in the propolis sample, indicating that it holds good antioxidant properties. A strong positive correlation was found between phenolics, flavonoids, DPPH and TEAC, indicating that in addition to total phenolic content, flavonoid and protein concentrations are good indicators of the antioxidant potential of propolis and honey.

Opis:
Spirulina platensis is a microalga that contains a lot of secondary metabolites and is utilized as a dietary supplement. It can inhibit fat peroxidation better compared to the chemical antioxidant. Laboratory-scale closed reactor system was designed for Spirulina cultivation. This research aims to analyze identified secondary metabolite (Phytochemical contents) and the antioxidant activity or value of Inhibition Concentration 50% (IC50) of the fresh lab-scale cultivated Spirulina platensis. The antioxidant content was evaluated using DPPH method (1,1–diphenyl-2-pikrilhidrazil) on various sample concentrations as well as using Vc (Ascorbic Acid) as a positive control. The principle of hydrogen absorption by free radicals from antioxidants was demonstrated with the absorption value using a spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 517 nm. The results show that Spirulina platensis lab-scale cultivation was resulting in 5.0±0.01 g/10.0 L wet basis on the 10th day. The results show that Spirulina platensis has positive compounds of flavonoid, steroids, triterpenoids, phenolic, and saponins. Fresh Spirulina platensis has a value of IC50 647.045 ppm and Vc as a positive control has the IC50 of 2.085 ppm. The potential as a source of natural antioxidants was categorized as a very weak capacity. Therefore this study can be concluded that Spirulina platensis cultivated in Laboratory-scale has a potential to act as antioxidant candidate.

Opis:
Pulses are a vital source of plant-based proteins and amino acids for people around the globe and should be eaten as part of a healthy diet to address obesity, as well as to prevent and help manage chronic diseases such as diabetes, coronary conditions and cancer; they are also an important source of plant-based protein for animals. Pulses provide protein and fibre, as well as a significant source of vitamins and minerals, such as iron, zinc, folate, and magnesium, and consuming half a cup of beans or peas per day can enhance diet quality by increasing intakes of these nutrients. The present attempt deals with comparison antioxidant activities of various sprouts of selected pulses. The β-carotene, ascorbic acid, total antioxidant activity, total phenol and flavonoid content of black gram (Vigna mungo), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), desi chickpea (Cicer arietinum), and yellow mustard (Brassica alba) seeds and their sprouts (48 h) were determined. The parameters selected reflect the antioxidant capacity with respect to the dietary antioxidants (β-carotene, ascorbic acid) which were noted to be highest in chickpea sprouts and black gram sprouts respectively. The highest antioxidant activity in terms of % DPPH inhibition (49.837 ± 0.61 % ) and flavonoid content ( 211.06 ± 8.17 mg/100g ) was observed in cowpea sprouts. The highest total phenol content was noted in yellow mustard sprouts (58.45 ±6.67 mg/100g). Inclusion of pulses in the diet is a healthy way to meet dietary recommendations and is associated with reduced risk of several chronic diseases including cancer. Long-term randomized controlled trials are needed to demonstrate the direct effects of pulses on the cancer like diseases.

Opis:
The date palm (Phoenyx dactylifera) consisted, for the people of southern Algeria, as tree of providence. Dates and their extracts are also used for many centuries as a medicine against allergy, inflammation, constipation and gastro-protective; they also have a high antibacterial and antioxidant activity. However, no studies are conducted to evaluate the extract from the leaves of date palm (Phoenyx dactylifera) in point of view of phytochemical composition, antimicrobial and the antioxidant activity. In this study, we have determined the phenolic compounds, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of methanolic extracts from three varieties of leaves tree. According to the results the leaves extracts have very important values for polyphenols (215.24 to 156.46 mg GAE / g DW) and high antioxidant activity (324. 45 to 206.21 mg GAE / g DW), Diphenyl-1 picrylhydrazyl radical-scavenging activity (IC50 = 2.98 to 4.83 μg / ml); also the three extracts reveal a considerable antimicrobial potency and antifungal considerable activity, the diameter of inhibition is 35.2 to 39.5 mm (concentration 50 mg/ml) for Candida albicans ATCC 90026.
