Let A be an analytic family of sequences of sets of integers. We show that either A is dominated or it contains a continuum of almost disjoint sequences. From this we obtain a theorem by Shelah that a Suslin c.c.c. forcing adds a Cohen real if it adds an unbounded real.

The above question was raised by Teodor Przymusiński in May, 1983, in an unpublished manuscript of his. Later on, it was recognized by Takao Hoshina as a question that is of fundamental importance in the theory of rectangular normality. The present paper provides a complete affirmative solution. The technique developed for the purpose allows one to answer also another question of Przymusiński's.

The aim of this paper is to prove that derivations of a C*-algebra A can be characterized in the space of all linear continuous operators T : A → A by the conditions T(1) = 0, T(L∩R) ⊂ L + R for any closed left ideal L and right ideal R. As a corollary we get an extension of the result of Kadison [5] on local derivations in W*-algebras. Stronger results of this kind are proved under some additional conditions on the cohomologies of A.

Let A be a C*-algebra. We prove that every absolutely summing operator from A into $ℓ_2$ factors through a Hilbert space operator that belongs to the 4-Schatten-von Neumann class. We also provide finite-dimensional examples that show that one cannot replace the 4-Schatten-von Neumann class by the p-Schatten-von Neumann class for any p < 4. As an application, we show that there exists a modulus of capacity ε → N(ε) so that if A is a C*-algebra and $T ∈ Π_1(A,ℓ_2)$ with $π_1(T) ≤ 1$, then for every ε >0, the ε-capacity of the image of the unit ball of A under T does not exceed N(ε). This answers positively a question raised by Pełczyński.

Given two n-tuples $a = (a_1,...,a_n)$ and $b = (b_1,...,b_n)$ of bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space the question of when there exists an elementary operator E such that $Ea_j = b_j$ for all j =1,...,n, is studied. The analogous question for left multiplications (instead of elementary operators) is answered in any C*-algebra A, as a consequence of the characterization of closed left A-submodules in $A^n$.

We show that every n-dimensional smooth algebraic variety X can be covered by Zariski open subsets $U_i$ which are isomorphic to closed smooth hypersurfaces in $ℂ^{n+1}$.
As an application we show that forevery (pure) n-1-dimensional ℂ-uniruled variety $X ⊂ ℂ^m$ there is a generically-finite (even quasi-finite) polynomial mapping $f:ℂ^n → ℂ^m$ such that $X ⊂ S_f$.
This gives (together with [3]) a full characterization of irreducible components of the set $S_f$ for generically-finite polynomial mappings $f:ℂ^n→ℂ^m$.

We consider the structure of Carathéodory balls in convex complex ellipsoids belonging to few domains for which explicit formulas for complex geodesics are known. We prove that in most cases the only Carathéodory balls which are simultaneously ellipsoids "similar" to the considered ellipsoid (even in some wider sense) are the ones with center at 0. Nevertheless, we get a surprising result that there are ellipsoids having Carathéodory balls with center not at 0 which are also ellipsoids.

Let A be a closed linear operator in a Banach space E. In the study of the nth-order abstract Cauchy problem $u^{(n)}(t) = Au(t)$, t ∈ ℝ, one is led to considering the linear Volterra equation (AVE) $u(t) = p(t) + A ʃ_{0}^{t} a(t-s)u(s)ds$, t ∈ ℝ, where $a(·) ∈ L_{loc}^{1}(ℝ)$ and p(·) is a vector-valued polynomial of the form $p(t) = ∑_{j=0}^n 1/(j!) x_j t^j$ for some elements $x_j ∈ E$. We describe the spectral properties of the operator A through the existence of slowly growing solutions of the (AVE). The main tool is the notion of Carleman spectrum of a vector-valued function. Moreover, an extension of a theorem of Pólya in complex analysis is obtained and applied to the individual "Ax = 0" and "Tx = x" problem.

$(s_{jk}: j,k = 0,1,...)$ be a double sequence of real numbers which is summable (C,1,1) to a finite limit. We give necessary and sufficient conditions under which $(s_{jk})$ converges in Pringsheim's sense. These conditions are satisfied if $(s_{jk})$ is slowly decreasing in certain senses defined in this paper. Among other things we deduce the following Tauberian theorem of Landau and Hardy type: If $(s_{jk})$ is summable (C,1,1) to a finite limit and there exist constants $n_1 > 0$ and H such that $jk(s_{jk} - s_{j-1,k} - s_{j-1,k} + s_{j-1,k-1}) ≥ -H$, $j(s_{jk} - s_{j-1, k}) ≥ -H$ and $k(s_{jk} - s_{j,k-1}) ≥ -H$ whenever $j,k > n_1$, then $(s_{jk})$ converges. We always mean convergence in Pringsheim's sense. Our method is suitable to obtain analogous Tauberian results for double sequences of complex numbers or for those in an ordered linear space over the real numbers.
