Opis:
The effect of high-energy electron irradiation on the structure and properties of the graphite steels have been investigated. It has been shown that single- and multicycle irradiation allows the improvement of hardness and ductility (≈ twice). A partial dissolution of the graphite, carbides redistribution, and refinement of the grain size allow the formation of the favorable surface structure after irradiation.

Accurate allocation of neural impulses to the same phase (i.e. phase locking) in the auditory system, ceases for frequencies above 5 kHz. However, some recent works suggest that it may have a much higher value. A discrimination of harmonic complex and inharmonic complex sound, formed using sound harmonic complex, in which all components were shifted towards higher frequency by the same number in hertzs, was analyzed. Fundamental frequency was $F_0$=1 kHz and signals were bandpass filtered by a fixed filter center frequency of which was $11F_0$ and bandwidth $5F_0$. Discrimination threshold was $\Delta F=0.089F_0$ for 10 normal-hearing subjects. However, replacing the sinusoidal components with the noise bands brought about a significant increase in thresholds. The largest increase was observed for 700 Hz bandwidth. The replacement of sinusoidal components with noisebands reduces information conveyed by phase locking. The differences in excitation pattern for harmonic complex and inharmonic complex signals, for the average threshold, did not exceed 0.7 dB. Therefore they could not be a useful cue for harmonic complex and inharmonic complex discrimination. A simplified model of phase locking showed that the substitution of sinusoids with bands of noise significantly reduced number of intervals between successive neural spikes corresponding to the virtual pitch of harmonic complex and inharmonic complex sounds. This degradation of discrimination suggests that the main source of information about the pitch of harmonic complex and inharmonic complex, especially for sinusoidal components, was the phase locking.

The current study is a continuation of experiments presented by Sęk and Bukała (Acta Physica Polonica A 123, 1106 (2013)). The purpose of the present study was to investigate frequency discrimination of amplitude modulated high frequency carriers. Using 2AFC procedure, the subjects were presented with two observation intervals of which the first interval contained four pulses of the same high frequency signal (called SSSS), while in the second interval (called SHSH) the second and fourth pulses had higher frequencies values (i.e. shifted upwards by Δ f). The carrier frequency (in S pulses) was fixed and equal to 10 kHz. Modulation rates were equal to 100, 200, 337, 500, 600, 733, and 800 Hz. The value of the modulation rate was limited to keep all components of the sinusoidal modulation within one auditory filter (17% of the center frequency) centered at the carrier frequency. Two different types of modulation were used: a simple sinusoidal modulation with the modulation depth m set to 100%, and a logarithmic modulation with the modulation depth m set to 50 dB. Results indicate a strong relationship between frequency discrimination threshold and modulation type. The thresholds are significantly higher for logarithmic modulation in comparison to sinusoidal modulation. Amplitude modulation as well as logarithmic modulation applied to the high frequency carrier cause significant increase in the frequency discrimination threshold. For high frequency sinusoidal signal carriers (i.e. close to 10 kHz), frequency discrimination thresholds do not depend on amplitude modulation rates up to about 800 Hz. In general, the excitation pattern mechanism was a primary cue enabling frequency discrimination of modulated and unmodulated signals to compare with the mechanism based on the temporal fine structure. However, the excitation pattern was not the only mechanism responsible for the frequency discrimination.

Diodes manufactured on the wafers of single-crystalline silicon uniformly doped with phosphorus are studied. The wafer resistivity was 90 Ω cm. Xenon ions were implanted into the diodes from the side of the $p^{+}$-region (implantation energy 170 MeV, fluence Φp from $5 \times 10^7$ to $10^9 cm^{-2}$). It is shown that the formation of a continuous irradiation damaged layer with the thickness of the order of magnitude of the average projective range creates prerequisites for the negative differential resistance in the current-voltage characteristics of the irradiated diodes.

Opis:
Silicon diodes irradiated with helium ions with energies of 4.1, 6.8 and 8.9 MeV are studied. It is shown that the mechanism determining the behaviour of frequency dependence of complex electric module and correspondingly the behavior of impedance of diodes irradiated with helium ions in the frequency region 3-200 kHz is a recharging of vacancy complexes localized in the space charge region.

The diodes manufactured on the wafers of single-crystalline silicon uniformly doped with phosphorus are studied. The wafer resistivity was 90 Ω cm. Krypton ions are implanted to the side of the $p^{+}$-region of diodes (energy 107 MeV, fluence Φp from 5 × $10^7$ to 4 × $10^9 cm^{-2}$). It is shown that recovery charge $Q_{rr}$ is inversely proportional to the square root of the irradiation fluence value Φp. When the fluence increases, the part of the recovery charge Q_{rrA}, due to the high reverse conductance phase, decreases faster than the value $Q_{rr}$.

Metals are one of the most widely used types of engineering materials. Some of their properties, e.g. elastic constants, can be directly related to the nature of the metallic bonds between the atoms. On the other hand, macro- and microstructural features of metals, such as point defects, dislocations, grain boundaries, and second phase particles, control their yield, flow, and fracture stress. Images of microstructural elements can be obtained by modern imaging techniques. Modern computer aided methods can be further used to obtain a quantitative description of these microstructures. These methods take advantage of the progress made in recent years in the field of image processing, mathematical morphology and quantitative stereology. Quantitative description of the microstructures are used for modeling processes taking place under the action of applied load at a given temperature and test (service) environment. These model considerations can be illustrated on the example of an austenitic stainless steel, which is an important material for power generating and chemical industry. Reports recently published also show that properties of materials can be significantly modified by the effect of free surface. Examples of such situations include environmental effect on the mechanical properties of materials. Data for an austenitic stainless steel is used to discuss contribution of the free surface to the mechanical properties of metals.

The aim of present work was to study the influence of partial substitution of Co by Mn in the LaFe_{11.2}Co_{0.7}Si_{1.1} alloy on its structure and magnetic properties. The X-ray diffraction studies revealed coexistence of dominant pseudobinary fcc La(Fe,Si)_{13}-type phase with minor fraction of α-Fe. Moreover, the increase of Mn content causes decrease of the lattice parameter and the Curie temperature. The values of magnetic entropy change obtained for both investigated alloys are almost identical and close to 12 J/(kg K) under the change of external magnetic field ≈5 T. Investigations of magnetic phase transition confirmed its second order nature in the case of both specimens.

Different grades of magnetic cobalt ferrite (Co_xFe_{3-x}O₄) nanoparticles were synthesized with various molar ratios of Fe²⁺ to Co²⁺ ions in the initial salt solutions method with using contact non-equilibrium plasma. The crystal structure and morphology of the nanoparticles are obtained from X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies. With an increase in the value of x, the saturation magnetization for the samples of CoFe₂O₄ has decreased from 150.9 emu/g to 1.2 emu/g. The dependence of the coercive force on x is extremal with a plateau maximum corresponding to the x=0.5-1.25.

In this work, we have intended to synthesize ZE41 Magnesium alloys having varying content of Ce of 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 wt.% and to investigate mechanical properties of these alloys. Alloys were produced by mechanical alloying under argon atmosphere. Structural, and mechanical properties of these alloys were investigated by means of XRD, SEM and nanoindenter analysis. From the XRD data it is found that as the Ce content increases, the crystallite size also increases. On the other hand, the hardness of the alloys decreases with the increasing Ce content. Indentation results show that the measured hardness displays a peak load dependence. Load-independent hardness was calculated by Hays-Kendall approach. As a results, it was found that Ce-doping modifies the microstructure and hardness of the alloy.

The pure Ni and Ni-S ageing systems, thermally aged and also irradiated by 5 MeV electrons at 270 K with subsequent annealing, are studied by means of positron annihilation spectroscopy. The formation of ultrafine S-rich precipitates (clusters) is observed in Ni-S during thermal ageing at about 650 K. It is assumed that these clusters do not contain vacancy-type defects and they are coherent to the Ni matrix. The positrons localize in sulphur clusters that is due to affinity-induced confinement. In irradiated Ni-S system, the mobile vacancy-S atom complexes are formed at post-irradiation annealing above 350 K (stage III). These complexes form the three-dimensional vacancy clusters (nanovoids) decorated with S atoms. The radiation induced nucleation of S-rich clusters occurs when nanovoids dissociate.

Mathematical model of formation of radiolytic products (e$\text{}_{aq}^{-}$, H, OH, H$\text{}_{2}$, H$\text{}_{3}$O$\text{}^{+}$, OH$\text{}^{-}$, Ps) in water is developed. It takes into account (1) reactions between dissolved scavengers of thermalized and hydrated electrons as well as epithermal ones; (2) ambipolar diffusion expansion of the intratrack species; (3) additional channels of Ps and H$\text{}_{2}$ formation due to appearance of weakly trapped electrons. Good agreement is obtained with experimental data on kinetics of accumulation of the products in pure water and their concentration variations in aqueous solutions.

The aim of this work was the modification of crosslink density and structure of rubber vulcanizates in order to control surface energy, mechanical strength under static as well as dynamic conditions and in consequence, tribological properties of the materials. Sulphur vulcanizates of styrene-butadiene rubber, filled with carbon black, were subjected to electron beam radiation in the range from 150 to 200 kGy. Changes in crosslink density and structure were determined applying the method of selective swelling of rubber in "hard" and "soft" solvents. The modification influences the ability of material of energy dissipation and its surface wettability. The changes are discussed from the friction and abrasion of rubber point of view.

The paper presents an analysis of surface acoustic wave delay line. The line consists of two simple interdigital transducers placed on a ST-cut quartz plate. Mid-band operation frequency of the line is 74 MHz. The line will be applied for surface acoustic wave vibration sensor. At the immovable end of the plate there are electric signal feeds to both transducers. This is the cause of increase in signal value going directly between the transducers and the cause of line losses. By means of equivalent electric model of interdigital transducer a loss analysis of the line has been made at 50 Ω load. The analysis allows to minimize line losses by matching the transducers to 50 Ω impedance. This has been practically achieved by a design of transducer geometry and configuration matching 50 Ω impedance, by means of inductance. An analysis of repeated operation characteristics of two interdigital transducers has been made. A signal going directly through capacitance between transducers and signals reflected from the edge of piezoelectric substrate have been presented. Results of theoretical analysis have been compared with experimental examinations.

The electroporation threshold was compared at various electric pulse durations for three cell lines: two non-tumor cell lines (human erythrocytes and Chinese hamster ovary cells) and one tumor cell line (rat glioma C6 cells). First, the dependences of the fraction of electroporated cells on the pulse intensity were obtained for the cells exposed to single square-wave electric pulses with the durations of 0.02-2 ms. Then, the average cell radii were measured for each cell line and the transmembrane potential induced by the external electric field was calculated. The obtained values of the transmembrane potential were in the range of 480-930 mV and decreased with increasing pulse duration. The obtained dependences of the transmembrane potential required to electroporate 50% of cells on the pulse duration were close to each other for all cell lines studied.
