    This article is a report form a study conducted among the students of two universities in Cracow. The objective of the research was to examine whether the students observe elements defined by M. Billing as "banal nationalism" in their everyday space. The author of this paper builds upon a brief analysis of space as an object of interest for sociologists and anthropologists (G. Simmel, E. T. Hall, Yi-Fu Tuan, T. Edensor, M. Augé), showing a dual continuum of the social experience of space, extending from home to not-place. An analysis of answers collected during the research allows to affirm that around 30% of the 100-person group under study distinguishes elements of what is national in their everyday space. Among the subsets of this space mentioned by the respondents, attire was brought up most frequently; next came: dishes and customs related to food consumption, means of transport, youth music, architecture and nature.

    Opis:
    The sea is certainly not one of the favourite research topics of sociology and despite a recent and new popularity among historians and geographers, the sea remains generally a stranger to contemporary sociologists. Conversely, I think that to frame and shed light on the wider theoretical implications of maritime sociology would be beneficial to all possible approaches within sociological research. In this article I intend to give my contribution to the fulfillment of the expectation of above by discussing the ways sociology can understand the sea as a truly social space, beyond any abstract dichotomies separating “grounded” societies and offshore voids. Also, I try to suggest some concrete moves to relocate maritime sociology within the wider sociological debate and to develop the heuristic potential of the sea.

    The essay critically approaches the current state and directions of changes in the university education. We see the critical point in the unconditioned endorsement by the university of the market values of intense competitiveness of global economy and the cult of the pro-market education which is its inevitable result. We would like to argue that although the university must respect economic conditions and limitations, nevertheless we fear that the ongoing process of corporatization of the university with its management strategies such as cutting costs, scanning environments for competitive purposes, re-engineering highly competitive efficiency criteria for the staff will bring about a neglect of the humanist values rooted in intellectual and social sensibility and hence undermine the social mission of the university which, apart from professional skills and research, must cultivate intellectual pluralism by providing space for intelligent conversation, sharing critical views of the present state of things thus fostering social criticism and the spirit of responsible dissent.

    Przestrzeń społeczna stanowi płaszczyznę, na której organizowane są kontakty społeczne. Dzięki Internetowi każdy człowiek może się skontaktować z każdym innym niezależnie od dzielącego ich fizycznego dystansu. Przestrzeń społeczna przybiera więc postać aterytorialnej sieci, złożonej z aktów komunikacji i wymiany informacji pomiędzy rozproszonymi na świecie podmiotami. Ten nowy rodzaj przestrzeni społecznej Manuel Castells nazwał przestrzenią przepływów. Pojawia się również przekonanie, że połączenia internetowe kreują przestrzeń alternatywną wobec przestrzeni fizycznej (określa się ją jako cyberprzestrzeń lub przestrzeń wirtualną). Współcześni badacze postulują jednak, aby nie postrzegać Internetu w ten sposób i podkreślają, że Internet jest przede wszystkim narzędziem używanym przez ludzi w codziennych praktykach. Życie codzienne jest zaś zlokalizowane w przestrzeni fizycznej. Internet umożliwia zatem komunikację na skalę globalną, ale jest często wykorzystywany w sprawach o charakterze lokalnym. Rozpatrywanie Internetu jako elementu codziennego życia pozwala więc na syntezę globalnego i lokalnego wymiaru Internetu.
    Social space is a platform for interpersonal contacts. Internet offers a new possibility of creating social space because each user might contact with any other despite geographical distance between them. Then, social space in the Internet age may be an aterritorial network composed of people’s communication and exchange of digital values. Manuel Castells named it ‘space of flows’. Moreover, Internet connections seem to create an alternative kind of space, called cyberspace or virtual space. Some contemporary social researchers suggest, however, to ‘move the Internet out of cyberspace’ because it is not an alternative space but merely an instrument used by people in their everyday practices. The people’s everyday life is always lived in a specific material place. Then the Internet makes possible global communication but at once is used in local activities. Considering the Internet as a part of everyday life provides a synthesis global and local aspects of the Internet.

    The social background of 'Ruch' Chorzów sports club with its concentric semi-institutional structure (from ultras via supporters to sympathizers) manifests symbols/signs understood in a very specific way. They emphasize Silesian separateness referring in different ways to the redefined identity of the Silesian club. It happens so in the situation when social and cultural indexes of this identity are gradually disappearing - fewer and fewer players in the team are Silesian homegrown of 'Ruch' Chorzów, the football squad being based to a growing extent on 'newcomers'. The process of disappearance of Silesian identity indexes - such as place of birth (of players and their parents) or ability to communicate in Silesian dialect - both among the players and the supporters is accompanied by redefinition and instrumentalization of the Silesian identity also as an element of space division/closure in Silesian cities. 'Ruch' offers then, in many cases, flexible, symbolic dimension which can be redefined and modified so freely, that it can take the forms distinctly contradictory to tradition. It doesn't mean that the manifestations of the Silesian identity shown in the article are suspended in the social vacuum. However, using quasi-traditional forms they describe and express new, postmodern reality, stressing particularly (and aggressively) the element of diversity.
    Społeczne otoczenie klubu sportowego „Ruch” Chorzów, o koncentrycznej strukturze para instytucjonalnej manifestuje szczególnie rozumiane symbole/znaki podkreślające śląską odrębność, odwołując się do zredefiniowanej tożsamości śląskiego klubu. Jednocześnie społeczno-kulturowe wyznaczniki owej tożsamości stopniowo zanikają – drużyna „Ruchu” w coraz mniejszym stopniu oparta jest na autochtonicznych wychowankach. Zanikaniu wyznaczników śląskiej tożsamości – miejsce urodzenia swoje i rodziców, umiejętność komunikowania w gwarze śląskiej – zarówno wśród piłkarzy, jak i kibiców, towarzyszy redefinicja i instrumentalizacja śląskiej tożsamości, tak że w funkcji elementu podziału/zamykania przestrzeni w śląskich miastach. „Ruch” oferuje zatem, w wielu przypadkach niezwykle plastyczną, domenę symboliczną, którą można modyfikować tak swobodnie, że przyjąć może ona postaci jawnie sprzeczne z tradycją. Nie oznacza to, że wskazane w artykule manifestacje śląskiej tożsamości są zawieszone w społecznej próżni. Tyle że posługując się quasi-tradycyjnymi formami opisują i wyrażają one nową, ponowoczesną rzeczywistość, eksponując zwłaszcza (agresywnie) element zróżnicowania.

    Opis:
    This article is devoted to analyzing how lifestyles typical in the modern world, related to migration and work, modify one's perspective on the local space in the context of a bor¬derland and become the basis for constructing a specific concept of locality. Such a concept, recognized in the researched cities of southern Poland, seems to be a regional (i.e. Central European) form of circumstances identified by R. Robertson as glocalization. The analysis of empirical material is preceded by a description of the theoretical sociological context of the researched phenomena, i.e. different ways researchers have framed space, with special attention given to relational concepts of space (M. Castells, J. Urry), which find their analogies in the empirical material. The analysis of individual interpretations of local space focuses on the issue of such representations of physical space, which underline its relational, network character. Next, the consequences of such an understanding of space for the interpretation of locality, i.e. all that can be described as close, homely, related to place, are analyzed. These consequences, termed as the extension and transgression of locality, do not follow solely from the assumptions concerning the nature of space made by the respondents. A factor responsible for reshaping their representation of locality is, first of all, migration in all its aspects and forms, i.e. emigration from the researched communities, immigration from the outside, internal and international migration, from rural to urban areas. In the specific conditions of the borderland it is possible to see that locality in the eyes of the respond¬ents crosses national and state boundaries. A vision of locality is reflexively confronted with an absolutist understanding of national and state space. In the testimonies there are visible attempts at lifting the border, contesting such an understanding of space. The choice of a relational, postmodern narration resembles the specific situation of borderland-ness of migrating persons.

    Analiza klasowa przechodzi obecnie głęboką zmianę spowodowaną falą krytyki. Z jednej strony teoria klas jest podważana przez teoretyków głoszących nadejście nowej fazy nowoczesności lub ponowoczesności, która czyni z „klasy” pojęcie przestarzałe. Z drugiej strony jesteśmy świadkami narastającego niezadowolenia z dominujących schematów klasowych (np. EGP) z powodu ich niezdolności do uchwycenia kulturowych i symbolicznych wymiarów struktury klasowej. Te okoliczności spowodowały zwrot ku nowemu paradygmatowi, tzw. kulturowej analizie klas, w dużej mierze inspirowanej pracami Pierre’a Bourdieu. Celem artykułu jest diagnoza aktualnego stanu analizy klasowej i zbadanie, jak koncepcja Bourdieu może przyczynić się do jej fundamentalnego przemyślenia.
    The field of class analysis is currently undergoing profound change spawned by the wave of criticism, both externally and internally. On the one hand, the class theory was challenged by theorists hailing the coming of a new phase of modernity or postmodernity which renders „class” an obsolete concept. On the other hand we are witnessing mounting dissatisfaction with the dominant class scheme (e.g. EGP) because of its inability to adequately illuminate the cultural and symbolic dimensions of class structure. These circumstances have prompted a turn towards new class paradigm, so-called „cultural class analysis” largely inspired by the works of Pierre Bourdieu. The aim of the article is to diagnose the state of art in class analysis and scrutinize how the work of Bourdieu can provide a more foundational rethinking of it.

    This text is an attempt at a sociological description of the phenomenon of street trading as a form of (in)visible presence in the public space of the city. Street traders are (in)visible in the sense that, in breaking the legal regulations setting the frame for public visibility, they must be invisible to the apparatus of power in order to avoid fines and ensure their ability to achieve their aims, their livelihoods. On the one hand, street traders balance on the edge of the law, transgressing the public order, and on the other hand, they are active creators of its (in)visible portion, metaphorically speaking—protesters against the established socio-cultural structures but in reality people seeking the means to survive.

    Participatory budgeting has become an important element of empowerment of the residents in the process of spatial planning in Polish cities. The citizens gained the right and a concrete tool to implement their ideas on how to change the city spaces. Many of the projects of participatory budgeting are the results of serious negligence in basic infrastructure in the cities. On the other hand, some of them are an expression of great ingenuity and innovative approach of the citizens to the modernization and arrangements in urban spaces. The civic projects improve quality of life and increase the utility value of public spaces. The main aim of the paper is to review and classify tasks changing public spaces under the formula of participatory budgeting. The research in a form of diagnosis enables to present the directions of participatory budgeting. It helps to monitor and evaluate the social impacts in the process of city space transformations. The subject of analysis are participatory budgets in Łódź and Katowice based on editions in 2015/2016 and 2016/2017.

    The paper demonstrates selected communicative phenomena characteristic of the Polish high school classroom, i.e. classroom communicative inertia and students’ communicative snippiness, which are assumed to originate, inter alia, from the popularity of Internet social networks, the language of which has been partly shaped by such globalising tendencies as the rise of the dominant position of the English language and Anglo-Saxon culture. The remedy for the aforementioned negative aspects of classroom communication may be sought among the premises underlying the concept of the transcommunicator. It is assumed that the above theory should be applied to English language teaching and learning in Poland.

    Celem opracowania jest wartościowanie kierunków podążania przez Unię Europejską do regionalnej spójności społecznej złączonej ze spójnością gospodarczą i terytorialną. Przeprowadzona analiza potwierdza tezę, że paradygmat wzrostu ekonomicznego nie sprzyja regionalnej spójności społecznej. Szanse poprawy tej spójności leżą w równoważeniu przestrzeni zamieszkiwania w myśl koncepcji rozwoju trwałego, które akcentuje rolę infrastruktury osadniczej w tym zakresie. Rynkowy mechanizm wzrostu w wersji liberalnej nadal kładzie się cieniem na rozumowaniu gremiów UE w zakresie analizowanym w tym opracowaniu. Przemawia to za zasadnością podejścia badawczego konfrontującego przeszłość z naukowymi wyobrażeniami dotyczącymi odleglejszej przyszłości w celu unaoczniania przesłanek zmiany paradygmatu dalszego rozwoju.
    The aim of this paper is the valuation of the directions of the EU towards regional social cohesion coalesced with economic and territorial cohesion. The analysis confirms that the paradigm of economic growth is not conducive to regional cohesion. Opportunities to improve this cohesion lie in balancing the living space in accordance with the concept of sustainable development, which emphasizes the role of the settlement infrastructure in this area. Market growth mechanism in the liberal version continues to affect the reasoning in the EU bodies in the area. This speaks for confronting the past with the scientific models of the future in order to highlight the rationale of paradigm change.

    The article is an attempt to outline the theoretical and methodological refl ection on public history in the context of some conceptual models and concrete examples of case studies. Considering discursive situations, suppositions, suggestions and interpellations on the enlightenment postulate with regard to public history (including the issues: magistra vitae, emancipatory project, affi rmative history, emotive revolution, critical discourse in the public space, modus art based research) I deal with the issues: what is actually the content of public history: history or memory? Does the enlightenment postulate with regard to public history turn memory into history? Are we dealing with some project concocted by the intelligentsia and scientifi c elite? What are the current trends in the implementation of critical discourse in public history?
