Opis:
This paper presents the findings of experimental research on employing ultrafiltration and microfiltration ceramic modules (150 kDa, 0.14 μm, 0.45 μm) for removal and concentration of the cationic surfactant Tequat LC90i (TEAQ) from water solutions. The filtration tests were performed at a semi-pilot installation in a crossflow regime. The feed solution parameters (surfactant concentration, pH of the treated solution, the presence of inorganic salt), and process conditions (transmembrane pressure and linear velocity) on the membrane filtration efficiency were evaluated. In all tests, very satisfactory TEAQ retention coefficients (in the range of 70–95) have been achieved. However, surfactant fouling occurred resulting in deterioration of the permeability of the modules. Modules characterized by the pore sizes greater than the size of surfactant particles (i.e., 0.45 μm modules) proved to be the most fouling resistant ones. It was also proven that process performance at high linear flow velocity can efficiently reduce the intensity of membrane pore blocking.

Opis:
This article aims to investigate in detail to what extent surfactants affect the determination of cadmium by anodic stripping voltammetry. In recent years, the production and use of surfactants have been steadily increasing, so that their concentration in environmental water samples is rising. At the same time, it is known that organic compounds, such as surfactants, often hinder the voltammetric determination of trace elements by stripping. Non-ionic (Triton X-100, Brij 35, Tween 20, Tween 60, Tween 80), cationic (CTAB, CTAC, DTAB, HPC) and anionic (DSS, SDS) compounds were selected to investigate the effect of surfactants on the voltammetric signal of cadmium. At the same time, the extent to which the addition of Amberlite resins to the analysed solution eliminates the interfering effect of surfactants was tested. Three types of Amberlite resins XAD-2, XAD-7 and XAD-16 were selected for the study and the ratio of resin weight to solution volume was determined. Finally, the determination of cadmium in surfactant-enriched environmental samples was carried out. The recoveries obtained between 95.5 and 107%, with RSD between 3.4 and 6.2%, confirm the validity and correctness of the proposed procedure All measurements were carried out by anodic stripping voltammetry using a CNTs/SGC electrode modified with a bismuth film as the working electrode.

Hydrophobic particulates, i.e. bubbles, precipitates, and coal particles are shown to exhibit similar isoelectric point (iep) values in the presence of ionic surfactants. While coal in anionic surfactant solutions exhibits negative zeta potentials in the entire pH region, coal in cationic surfactant solutions undergoes a charge reversal in alkaline pH. Adsorption and zeta potential measurements together with previously published results indicate that ionic surfactants adsorb on coal through hydrophobic bonding driven by entropy. Physicochemical similarities in the adsorption mechanisms of ionic surfactants onto the bubbles, precipitates, and coal particles are proposed to be responsible for the observed iep values and also heterocoagulation phenomena.

Opis:
In this study, the effect of medium saline water on the synergistic interaction between diesel and Triton X-100 in the flotation of oxidized coal was investigated. The results showed that the flotation yield of oxidized coal in saline water was higher than that in de-ionized (DI) water due to the promotion of diesel adsorption, which was attributed to the screening of electrostatic repulsion between diesel droplets and coal particles in saline water. Meanwhile, the flotation of oxidized coal could be significantly improved when Triton X-100 was added with diesel as a composite collector, and less Triton X-100 was required in saline water than that in DI water to achieve the same true flotation yield, indicating that saline water could increase the effectiveness of Triton X-100 in improving oxidized coal flotation. A mechanism study revealed that Triton X-100 was able to promote diesel adsorption on oxidized coal through emulsification, thus increasing the surface hydrophobicity of oxidized coal through hydrogen bonding between the headgroups of Triton X-100 and the oxygenated groups on coal surfaces. The non-ionic characteristic of Triton X-100 ensured its capability of enhancing oxidized coal flotation in both DI water and saline water.

The static magnetic field MF (0.44 T) effects on the adsorption of three surfactants: cationic bromide (DTAB) and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), and anionic sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) from their 10-3 M solutions were studied on bare and low-temperature air plasma treated glass plates. The surface properties of the adsorbed surfactants layers were determined via the water advancing and receding contact angles measurements and then calculation of the apparent surface free energy. An optical profilometer was used to determine the structure and topography of the adsorbed layers. The DTAB and SDS concentrations were below their critical micelle concentration and that of CTAB very close to its cmc. The results showed that in the case of DTAB solution (much below its cmc) a small decrease in the contact angle appeared while in CTAB (close to its cmc) an increase in the contact angle value was observed if adsorbed in the MF presence. Quite good reproducibility of the contact angle values was obtained. This was not the case for the SDS solution where the contact angle values were scattered. The reason was that the anionic surfactant did not adsorb homogeneously on the negatively charged glass surface. The contact angles and the calculated values of the work of water spreading clearly show that MF influences the structure of the surfactant adsorbed layer which was also supported by the optical profilometry images.

Opis:
This paper reports oil agglomeration of fine metal-bearing shale particles in the presence of cationic (dodecylamine hydrochloride) and anionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate) surfactants and their mixture. The experimental results demonstrated that there was a strong relationship between zeta potential, hydrophobic coagulation, oil agglomeration and particle hydrophobicity in the presence of cationic surfactant, whereas shale neither coagulated nor agglomerated in the presence of anionic surfactant. Addition of either anionic or cationic surfactant in emulsification of a bridging oil increased the size of agglomerates and reduced the concentration of surfactant used in the suspension. The results pointed to synergism between cationic and anionic surfactants in oil agglomeration. Based on the results obtained from this study, the mechanism of oil agglomeration of shale in the presence of ionic surfactants and their mixture was elucidated.

The usefulness of micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) for copper ion removal was evaluated. The experiments were performed in a semi-pilot installation in a cross-flow regime with the use of ultrafiltration modules (5 kDa and 10 kDa). The first stage of the tests included copper ion removal in the classic UF process. During the next step, anionic surfactant (sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate, SDBS) was added to the feed solution in a wide range of concentrations. The effect of copper and surfactant concentrations on separation efficiency and permeate flux was evaluated. It was found that MEUF enables high copper ion removal. Depending on surfactant concentration in the feed solution, the average copper concentration in the permeate was in the range from 0.02 to 0.08 mM (feed solution 0.79 mM). Surfactant rejection was strongly dependent on its concentration in the feed; the highest retention was obtained when surfactant was in the form of micelles, i.e., for concentrations exceeding the CMC.

Opis:
The present work contributes to the analysis of the effect of electrolyte and pH on the adsorption of dicephalic N-dodecyl-N,N-bis[(3-D-aldonylamido) propyl]amines (aldonyl = gluconyl and lactobionyl) at the air/water interface. The headgroup of these surfactants consists of two amide groups connected by a central tertiary amine, which may be protonated in an aqueous environment. We performed measurements of surface tension isotherms of aqueous solutions of the studied dicephalics in the presence of NaCl and NaOH and applied the STDE model for evaluation of the experimental results. They showed that the adsorption of the surfactants at the air/water interface was pH- and electrolyte- dependent, since addition of NaCl and NaOH had different effects on the surface activity and critical micelle concentration values (CMC). The theoretical model reflected well the surface tension isotherms obtained for a broad range of surfactants concentration, confirming the theoretical predictions concerning the protonation of tertiary amines, which was additionally supported by the measurements of solution pH.

Opis:
The attachment of bubbles and particles represents one of the sub-processes in froth flotation among others (e.g. collision and detachment). The main interactions present at short distances in such a bubble-particle system are the van der Waals and electrostatic double layer interactions combined in the DLVO theory. In this study, the special features of the attachment process were discussed with a focus on flotation. For the van der Waals interactions, the Hamaker constants were calculated with the help of Lifshitz´ macroscopic theory as a function of the separation distance for specific material combinations. A specific material system (PbS-Water-Air) was used to demonstrate the implementation of bubble-particle attachment of the proposed modelling framework. The effects of additional surfactant/collector and air layers on the solid interface were presented. This framework of layered systems showed that the sign of van der Waals interaction could be turned from repulsive to attractive without the need to extend the DLVO theory. The thickness of the layer as a function of collector adsorption between a particle and a bubble is suggested as a modelling parameter in bubble-particle attachment efficiency.

The adsorption capacities of 205.2 mg/g for AY219, 36.5 mg/g for RB21 and 18 mg/g for DY142. The potentiometric titration and Doppler laser electrophoresis methods enable determination of sign and magnitude of charge located in both the surface and the slipping plane layers around the solid particles. The structure of electrical double layer was determined in the AST88 systems without as well as with dyes and with mixed dye + surfactant adsorbates.

The catalytic activity of 6TG was confirmed by the decrease of overall enthalpies of activation. The fouling phenomenon of porous polymeric ultrafiltration and nanofiltration membranes was investigated during the purification of solutions containing surfactants. The effects of surfactant type, concentration, and membrane pore size on process performance were evaluated. The highest intensity of membrane fouling was caused by micellar solutions, resulting from the coexistence of monomeric and aggregated surfactant forms. A significant role of hydrophobic/hydrophilic interactions between surfactants and the polymer surface in membrane fouling was proved. Interpretation of the theoretical fouling model showed that cake formation is the dominant fouling mechanism of membranes.
