Opis:
Compared with standard vessels, a slender catamaran with a semi-submerged bow (SSB) demonstrates superior seakeeping performance. To predict the motion of an SSB catamaran, computational fluid dynamics methods are adopted in this study and results are validated through small-scale model tests. The pitch, heave, and vertical acceleration are calculated at various wavelengths and speeds. Based on the overset grid and motion region methods, this study obtains the motion responses of an SSB catamaran in regular head waves. The results of the numerical studies are validated with the experimental data and show that the overset grid method is more accurate in predicting the motion of an SSB catamaran; the errors can be controlled within 20%. The movement data in regular waves shows that at a constant speed, the motion response initially increases and then decreases with increasing wavelength. This motion response peak is due to the encountering frequency being close to the natural frequency. Under identical sea conditions, the motion response increases with the increasing Froude number. The motion prediction results, that derive from a shortterm irregular sea state, show that there is an optimal speed range that can effectively reduce the amplitude of motion.

Opis:
Underwater gliders are winged, autonomous underwater vehicles that are broadly applied in physical and biological oceanography. The position of the wing has an important effect on the movement performance of the underwater glider. In this paper, the dynamic motion of a series of underwater glider models with different longitudinal wing positions are simulated, which provides guidance for the design of underwater gliders. The results show that when the net buoyancy is constant, the wing position affects the gliding angle, but does not affect the relationship between the gliding angle and the gliding speed. In addition, the farther the wing position of the glider is from the buoyancy centre, the longer it takes for the attitude of a glider to change, whether the wing is in front of, or behind, the buoyancy centre.

Opis:
In this study numerical and analytical approaches were investigated in terms of accuracy of their results, practicality of solution and ability to reproduce the main features of the parametric roll phenomenon such as loss of stability and bifurcations in parametric roll motion analysis of ships. In general, single-degree-of-freedom analytical approach is based on reducing number of degrees of freedom from 3 to 1 by using the quasi-static Froude-Krylov assumption, incorporating heave and pitch effects by means of a time varying restoring moment. On the other hand, numerical approaches to motion of six and four degrees of freedom are based on three dimensional diffraction/radiation and potential flow theories. In summary, this paper reveals that analytical approaches are sufficiently adequate to obtain accurate practical results for this relatively complex phenomenon.

The longitudinal motion characteristics of a slender trimaran equipped with and without a T-foil near the bow are investigated by experimental and numerical methods. Computational fluid dynamics ( CFD) method is used in this study. The seakeeping characteristics such as heave, pitch and vertical acceleration in head regular waves are analyzed in various wave conditions. Numerical simulations have been validated by comparisons with experimental tests. The influence of large wave amplitudes and size of T-foil on the longitudinal motion of trimaran are analyzed. The present systematic study demonstrates that the numerical results are in a reasonable agreement with the experimental data. The research implied that the longitudinal motion response values are greatly reduced with the use of T-foil.

The aim of this study is to design a controller based on Lyapunov’s direct method for fin roll stabilization systems for ships in beam seas. A third order mathematical model consisting of uncoupled roll motion of a ship and fin hydraulic system dynamics is considered. In the model, random wind force is defined by Gaussian white noise. Both controlled and uncontrolled roll motions are presented considering stall effect by roll-time history and safe basin graphics. It is observed from the results that fin control system is successful to reduce erosion percentages of safe basins and roll amplitudes.

This study aims to reduce roll motion of a fishing boat which arises from disturbing hydrodynamic effects by means of fin roll stabilizer. It is assured that roll motion with nonlinear damping and restoring moment coefficients are down to the desired level through classical PID and modified PID algorithms. At the time of sailing, stability, a very important concept, was examined using Lyapunov direct method taking initial conditions into consideration, and it was noted that the system was generally stable. In addition, NACA 0015 model was used for the fin roll stabilizer, and flow analysis was carried out with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method. In the simulation results, when the same gains were used, modified PID controller algorithms were relatively more effective compared to PID in the fin roll stabilizer system.

Opis:
In the development of ship motion control systems, software simulations or scale model experiments in pools or open water are very often carried out in the verification and testing stages. This paper describes the process of building a software wave simulator based on data gathered on the Silm Lake near Iława, Poland, where scale ship models are used for research and training. The basis of the simulator structure is a set of shaping filters fed with Gaussian white noise. These filters are built in the form of transfer functions generating irregular wave signals for different input wind forces. To enable simulation of a wide range of wind speeds, nonlinear interpolation is used. The lake wave simulation method presented in this paper fills a gap in current research, and enables accurate modelling of characteristic environmental disturbances on a small lake for motion control experiments of scale model ships.

Opis:
The article analyses excitations of a multihull vessel using stochastic formulation. The excitations which make the vessel move come from the motion of sea waves and the action of wind. The sea undulation has most frequently the form of irregular waves, and that is why it is assumed in many studies of sea-going vessel dynamics that the undulation process has probabilistic nature. In the article the dynamics of a multihull vessel is analysed using a linear model on which an irregular wave acts. It was assumed that the examined object interacts with the head sea, and for this wave a set of state equations was derived. The head sea provokes symmetric movements of the object, i.e. surge, heave and pitch.

Opis:
The increase of seakeeping performance is of particular importance for car and passenger ferries, service ships in the gas and oil extraction industry and offshore wind power farm industry, as well as for special purpose ships (including military applications). In the water areas of the Baltic Sea, North Sea, and Mediterranean Sea, which are characterised by a short and steep wave, the hull shape has a substantial impact on the operational capacity and propulsion efficiency of the ship, as well as on comfort and safety of navigation. The article analyses selected aspects of seakeeping for four variants of a selected case study vessel, indicating practical limitations of the strip method. The analysed aspects included hull heaving and pitching, added resistance, Motion Thickness Indicator (MSI), and Subjective Magnitude (SM). Experimental tests were also performed in the towing tank. Their comparison with the numerical results has indicated high inaccuracy of the strip method. What is more, the simplified representation of hull shape used in the strip method makes it impossible to analyse the effect of hull shape changes on the predicted seakeeping characteristics. Especially for the case of head wave, neglecting highly non-linear phenomena, such as slamming or head wave breaking, in strip method-based computer simulations will significantly decrease the reliability of the obtained results. When using the strip method, the seakeeping analysis should be complemented with model tests in a towing tank, or by another more complex numerical analysis, such as CFD for instance.

Side scan sonar measurement platform, affected by underwater environment and its own motion precision, inevitably has posture and motion disturbance, which greatly affects accuracy of geomorphic image formation. It is difficult to sensitively and accurately capture these underwater disturbances by relying on auxiliary navigation devices. In this paper, we propose a method to invert motion and posture information of the measurement platform by using the matching relation between the strip images. The inversion algorithm is the key link in the image mosaic frame of side scan sonar, and the acquired motion posture information can effectively improve seabed topography and plotting accuracy and stability. In this paper, we first analyze influence of platform motion and posture on side scan sonar mapping, and establish the correlation model between motion, posture information and strip image matching information. Then, based on the model, a reverse neural network is established. Based on input, output of neural network, design of and test data set, a motion posture inversion mechanism based on strip image matching information is established. Accuracy and validity of the algorithm are verified by the experimental results.

Opis:
The unmanned surface vehicles (USV) are required to perform a dynamic obstacle avoidance during fulfilling a task. This is essential for USV safety in case of an emergency and such action has been proved to be difficult. However, little research has been done in this area. This study proposes an emergency collision avoidance algorithm for unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) based on a motion ability database. The algorithm is aimed to address the inconsistency of the existing algorithm. It is proposed to avoid collision in emergency situations by sharp turning and treating the collision avoidance process as a part of the turning movement of USV. In addition, the rolling safety and effect of speed reduction during the collision avoidance process are considered. First, a USV motion ability database is established by numerical simulation. The database includes maximum rolling angle, velocity vector, position scalar, and steering time data during the turning process. In emergency collision avoidance planning, the expected steering angle is obtained based on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs), and the solution space, with initial velocity and rudder angle taken as independent variables, is determined by combining the steering time and rolling angle data. On the basis of this solution space, the objective function is solved by the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, and the optimal initial velocity and rudder angle are obtained. The position data corresponding to this solution is the emergency collision avoidance trajectory. Then, the collision avoidance parameters were calculated based on the afore mentioned model of motion. With the use of MATLAB and Unity software, a semi-physical simulation platform was established to perform the avoidance simulation experiment under emergency situation. Results show the validity of the algorithm. Hence results of this research can be useful for performing intelligent collision avoidance operations of USV and other autonomous ships.

Opis:
Simulation of the hydrodynamic performance of a floating current turbine in a combined wave and flow environment is important. In this paper, ANSYS-CFX software is used to analyse the hydrodynamic performance of a vertical-axis turbine with various influence factors such as tip speed ratio, pitching frequency and amplitude. Time-varying curves for thrust and lateral forces are fitted with the least squares method; the added mass and damping coefficients are refined to analyse the influence of the former factors. The simulation results demonstrate that, compared with nonpitching and rotating turbines under constant inflow, the time-varying load of rotating turbines with pitching exhibits an additional fluctuation. The pitching motion of the turbine has a positive effect on the power output. The fluctuation amplitudes of thrust and lateral force envelope curves have a positive correlation with the frequency and amplitude of the pitching motion and tip speed ratio, which is harmful to the turbine’s structural strength. The mean values of the forces are slightly affected by pitching frequencies and amplitudes, but positively proportional to the tip speed ratio of the turbine. Based upon the least squares method, the thrust and lateral force coefficients can be divided into three components, uniform load coefficient, added mass and damping coefficients, the middle one being significantly smaller than the other two. Damping force plays a more important role in the fluctuation of loads induced by pitching motion. These results can facilitate study of the motion response of floating vertical-axis tidal current turbine systems in waves.

Anyway, there is always problem with immediate contact between magnetic fluid and the environmental liquid. In the paper are presented results of experiments carried out with one stage rotating magnetic fluid seal operating in immediate contact with utility water. The special test procedures have been elaborated and practically used, with the aim to define main characteristics of magnetic fluid seals and to simplify experiments. These characteristics were: critical pressure, critical motion velocity and working life of the seal. Four grades of commercial, silicon based magnetic fluids of hydrophobic properties were tested in a single stage sealing system. The results of tests are presented in the form of tables and diagrams. It is concluded that hydrophobic commercial magnetic fluids could be efficiently used in rotating shaft seals however in a limited range of motion velocity.
