Opis:
Rectifier columns are considered to be a critical component in petroleum refineries and petrochemical processing installations as they are able to affect the overall performance of these facilities. It is deemed necessary to monitor the operational conditions of such vessels to optimize processes and prevent anomalies which could pose undesired consequences on product quality that might lead to huge financial losses. A rectifier column was subjected to gamma scanning using a 10-mCi Co-60 source and a 2-inch-long detector in tandem. Several scans were performed to gather information on the operating conditions of the column under different sets of operating parameters. The scan profiles revealed unexpected decreases in the radiation intensity at vapour levels between trays 2 and 3, and between trays 4 and 5. Flooding also occurred during several scans which could be attributed to parametric settings.

In order to develop a possible Ga-labeled glucagon (GCG) compound for imaging studies, biosynthetic glucagon (GCG) was labeled with [67Ga]-gallium chloride after conjugation with freshly prepared diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid dianhydride (ccDTPA). After solid phase purification of the radiolabeled hormone, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and instant thin-layer chromatography (ITLC) showed a radiochemical purity around 95 per cent in optimized conditions (specific activity = 296–370 GBq/mM; labeling efficiency 85 per cent). Preliminary in vivo studies (IDźg–1 per cent) in male wild-type rats showed heart:muscle, liver:muscle, lung:muscle and stomach:muscle ratios to be 5.53, 2.9, 7.56, 3.69, 3.2 (in 5 min), respectively while after 2 h liver:blood, lung:blood and spleen:blood ratios were 14.21, 16.86 and 7.8, respectively. The data suggests 5 min post injection, the tracer is accumulated in GCGR rich tissues which is in agreement with biodistribution studies and reported GCG receptors (GCGRs). The results of the present study can possibly offer a candidate for non-invasive imaging of glucagon receptor related diseased and malignancies such as glucagonoma.

Due to interesting role of dihydropyridines in cardiovascular diseases and drug resistance studies and lack of a fluorine-18 labeled imaging agent for L-type calcium channel studies, this study was designed. [18F]Dimethyl 2-(fluoromethyl)-6-methyl-4-(2-nitrophenyl)-1,4-dihydropyridine-3,5-dicarboxylate 2 was prepared in no-carrier-added (n.c.a.) form from a starting brominated compound in one step at 80°C in Kryptofix2.2.2/[18F]. Compound 2 was administered to normal rats via their tail veins for preliminary biodistribution studies and the ID/g% of the labeled compound was determined up to 3 h post injections. Coincidence images were obtained in rats 5 to 120 min. Radiofluorination on bromo precursor gave a fluorinated compound in 95% radiochemical purity and a 8% yield shown by RTLC and HPLC. Biodistribution studies showed that the tracer is accumulated in the heart in the first few minutes, followed by metabolism resulting in very soluble 18F-containing metabolites eliminated through the urinary tract. In coincidence images, the target organ was shown to be the heart. Lung had high accumulation possibly due to the presence of Ca2+ channels and/or hydrolyzing enzymes showing a significant myocardial uptake at 120 min. The data demonstrates a significant agreement with the reported L-type calcium channels throughout the animal body. To our knowledge, this is the first example of 18F-DHPs in the literature.

Targeting apoptosis is an interesting issue in molecular imaging and various modalities have been presented. However, recent experiences in nuclear pharmacy demonstrated the application of small tracer molecules is more desired. This work was conducted for production of a radiolabeled copper complex, i.e. 61Cu-oxinate as a potential PET tracer for apoptosis imaging in oncology. Cu-61 was prepared by natural zinc target irradiation with 22 MeV protons (150 miA) via the natZn(p, xn)61Cu nuclear reaction with a yield of 3.33 mCi/miAh. In order to obtain the best labeling method, optimization reactions were performed for pH, temperature and concentration followed by solid phase extraction. Biodistribution of the tracer was studied in wild-type and fibrosarcoma bearing mice. Under the optimized conditions, radio-thin-layer chromatography (RTLC) and HPLC showed radiochemical purities of 99.99% and 97% respectively (with a minimum specific activity of 16 Ci/mM). Biodistribution of the tracer in fibrosarcoma bearing mice demonstrated a significant tumor uptake after 3 h. Tumor:blood and tumor:muscle ratios were 2.0 and 6.0 after 3 h, respectively.

Opis:
In this work, the establishment of a technology for HgI2 purification and crystal growth is described, aiming at a future application of this crystal as a room temperature radiation semiconductor detector. Two methods of crystal growth were studied in the development of this work: (1) physical vapor transport (PVT) and (2) saturated solution from dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO) complexes. In order to evaluate the crystals obtained using each of these methods, systematic measurements were carried out for determining the stoichiometry, structure, orientation, surface morphology and impurity of the crystal. The influence of these physicochemical properties of the crystals developed was evaluated in terms of their performance as a radiation detector. The best response to radiation was found for the crystals grown by the PVT technique. Significant improvement in the performance of HgI2 radiation detector was found, purifying the crystal by means of two successive growths by the PVT technique.

Opis:
In 2014, an intercomparison exercise of passive radon detectors under field conditions in the Marie Curie’s tunnel belonging to the Lurisia spas complex (Lurisia, Piedmont, Italy) has been held. Radon activity concentration in the tunnel was measured with six radon active monitors, previously calibrated at ENEA-INMRI facilities. In the present paper, a synthesis of the metrological aspects of the intercomparison is given. Indeed particular attention was paid to metrological characterization of radon monitors and their response upon ambient conditions. Correction factors have been defined to be applied when measurements are performed in severe environmental conditions. In particular, it has been found that monitors are particularly sensitive to the effect of air density: the AlphaGUARD (AG-SAPHYMO, GmbH) effi ciency decreases with the air density, while for the MR1 PLUS (Tesys, Italy), the opposite applies. When the reference monitors were placed into the Marie Curie’s tunnel, to the recorded average radon concentrations correction factors were applied. After the correction the difference between data coming from AG and MR1 PLUS is within the 1.7%.

Opis:
In recent years a large number of radon intercomparison exercises has been organized; most of them took place in radon chambers, in reference atmosphere of the parameter to control (i.e. radon gas) under temperature, humidity and atmospheric pressure stable conditions. In 2014, in the tunnel belonging to the Lurisia spas complex (Lurisia, Piedmont, Italy), with natural high concentrations of uranium and radon gas, an intercomparison exercise has been held to give to radon measurement services and laboratories the possibility to test their passive systems under field conditions, which are less controlled and much more challenging. The response of laboratories was very positive: 46 participants from 10 European countries and 3 non-European countries. Generally about 80% of results of participants were considered acceptable even if it was observed a global trend of a substantial underestimation of the actual radon concentration.

The samples to be imaged were located outside the Plasma Focus chamber, about 1 m away from the chamber wall. A high-sensitivity, fast-response commercial radiographic film was used as a X-ray detector. Experimentally obtained images are presented showing a very high penetration power of the X-ray beam, demonstrating that the presented compact-chamber Plasma Focus is suited for introspective visualisation of pieces manufactured on metal.

Human recombinant insulin was successively labeled with [67Ga]-gallium chloride after conjugation with freshly prepared cyclic DTPA-dianhydride (ccDTPA). The best results of the conjugation were obtained by the addition of 0.5 ml of an insulin pharmaceutical solution (5 mg/ml, in phosphate buffer, pH = 8) to a glass tube precoated with DTPA-dianhydride (0.01 mg) at 25°C with continuous mild stirring for 30 min. Radiothin-layer chromatography (RTLC), instant thin-layer chromatography (ITLC) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) showed overall radiochemical purity higher than 96% in optimized conditions (specific activity = 300 500 MBq/mg, labeling efficiency 77%). Preliminary in vivo studies with normal rats were performed to determine the biodistribution of the radiotracer up to 110 h. They showed a high liver uptake of the tracer which is consistent with other reported radiolabeled insulins.

Opis:
A large amount of naturally occurring radioactive materials in the form of by-products or waste is produced annually by the growing activity of the oil and gas industry. Solid scale, sludge and produced water are typical residues contaminated with natural radionuclides from the uranium and thorium series, particularly 226Ra and 228Ra. The observed specific activities of these radionuclides are in the ranges up to 3700 kBq/kg and up to 168 kBq/kg for solid scale and sludge, respectively. The average activities of both radionuclides exceed the exemption level of 10,000 Bq/kg recommended by IAEA safety standards. This means that TENORM wastes from the oil industry may generate radiation exposure levels which require attention and continuous monitoring during some routine operations in this industry. This exposure is mostly caused by external gamma radiation coming from the 226Ra radionuclide and its progenies.

The detonation of an (hypothetical) improvised nuclear device (IND) can generate atmospheric release of radioactive material in the form of particles and dust that ultimately contaminate the soil. In this study, the detonation of an IND in an urban area was simulated, and its effects on humans were determined. The risk of solid cancer development due to radiation was calculated by taking into account prompt radiation and whole-body exposure of individuals near the detonation site up to 10 km. The excess relative risk (ERR) of developing solid cancer was evaluated by using the mathematical relationships from the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) studies and those from the HotSpot code. The methodology consists of using output data obtained from simulations performed with the HotSpot health physics code plugging in such numbers into a specific given equation used by RERF to evaluate the resulting impact. Such a preliminary procedure is expected to facilitate the decision-making process significantly.
