Opis:
VI międzynarodowe porównanie wiarygodności trzech najważniejszych metod analitycznych stosowanych do wykrywania napromieniowanej żywności zorganizowano w 2015 r. pod auspicjami Ministerstwa Zdrowia i Hiszpańskiej Agencji Bezpieczeństwa Żywności i Żywienia (AESAN) oraz Krajowego Centrum Żywności (CNA). W badaniu zatytułowanym „Międzynarodowe badanie porównawcze metodami Tl, PSL i EPR, 6 runda” brało udział dziewiętnaście specjalistycznych laboratoriów z kilku krajów europejskich. CNA jest doświadczonym laboratorium, posiadającym akredytację do wykrywania napromieniowanej żywności metodami thermoluminescencji (TL), fotostymulowanej luminescencji (PSL) i spektroskopii elektronowego rezonansu paramagnetycznego (EPR).
Under the auspices of the Ministry of Health and the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) the National Food Centre (CNA) in 2015 has organised the 6th international exercise for testing the reliability of three most important analytical methods used for the detection of irradiated food. The study named ”Intercomparative exercise for quality assurance on Tl, PSL and EPR Irradiated food detection methods, 6 th Round” assembled nineteen specialized laboratories from several European countries. The organizing institution CNA possess accreditation for the detection of irradiated food and is experienced in thermoluminescence (TL), photostimulated luminescence (PSL) and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR). It is also the case with most of participating laboratories. Presently the spectrum of food products found in the market is significantly extended and many of this products were not tested or validated whether their radiation treatment is detectable. This is a strong argument for the need of the organization of intercomparative studies as the present one.

The stable and complex EPR signals produced by the action of ionizing radiation on crystalline L-sorbose (C6H12O6) separated from rowan berries (Sorbus aucuparia) were studied. Isothermal heating of the samples at the temperature close to the melting point of L-sorbose (140°C) results in the modification and simplification of the EPR signal involved. In the EPR signal of heated L-sorbose, the isotropic quartet was distinguished. In the differential spectrum obtained by subtraction of normalized spectra of unheated and heated L-sorbose, the isotropic doublet was identified in addition. The DFT fitting offers the probable assignment of the EPR signals to specifi c radical structures.

The association between the lung cancer and indoor radon exposure in Russian population was investigated. The average indoor radon concentration for each region was estimated using the annual reports issued by the Saint-Petersburg Ramzaev Research Institute of Radiation Hygiene for the period 2008–2013. The average standardized lung cancer mortalities among males and females were estimated using the reports of the Moscow Hertzen Cancer Research Institute for the period 2008–2012. The relative risk (RR) was estimated as a ratio between the average mortality within seven exposure intervals and background mortality. The slope factors of linear dependence between the indoor radon exposure and lung cancer RR are 0.026 (–0.11÷0.17) and 0.83 (0.52–1.12) per radon concentration 100 Bq/m3 for males and females, respectively (with 90% confidence interval). The obtained results can be explained by the confounding effect of tobacco smoking. Significant excess risk of lung cancer in female population can be associated with radon exposure and low prevalence of smoking.

Two-temperature electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements, applied to determine the relative contributions of paramagnetic centers – fulfilling and not-fulfilling the Curie law, were carried out. The measurements were made on the macerals – exinite and vitrinite, separated from clarain of the Polish medium- -rank coal (85.6 wt% C). The two-temperature EPR measurements, presented in this work, were performed respectively, at temperatures: T1 = 293 K and T2 = 173 K for exinite, and T1 = 293 K and T2 = 153 K for vitrinite. The relative contributions X of spins not-fulfilling the Curie law present in the studied macerals were calculated. A comparison of different methods of calculating the relative contributions of paramagnetic centers – fulfilling and not-fulfilling the Curie law, present in exinite and vitrinite studied by EPR was made.

Stability of sugar born radicals separated from irradiated Iranian dried raisins and from D-fructose by Sigma Aldrich has been studied at room temperature by EPR and PPSL methods in a period of 360 days. It has been proven for the first time experimentally that the complex EPR spectrum of irradiated sugars is changed in time and after heating. Hence, this made it possible to distinguish spectral lines of two specific radicals contributing to the formation of multicomponent spectra, recorded in both time dependent and heating experiments. The radicals measured by EPR and energy traps detected by PPSL decay at room temperature in a similar way, suggesting a similar distribution of both species in sugar crystallites. We think that our experimental approach might be useful to study interrelation between the formation and trapping of radicals and energy accumulated in crystalline matrices. In order to achieve the isolation of individual sugars from fruits the extraction and specific separation procedures have been adapted with the use of methanol, ethanol and water solvents. Our results clearly show that radicals induced by radiation in fruits (with fructose born radicals as major constituent) are stable enough at room temperature for easy identification of irradiated raisins using the EPR method.

Opis:
The dominating carbohydrates in fruits are monosaccharides like fructose, glucose, sorbose and mannose. In dehydrated fruits, concentration of monosaccharides is higher than in fresh fruits resulting in the formation of sugar crystallites. In most of dried fruits, crystalline fructose, and glucose dominate and appear in proportion near to 1:1. Irradiation of dried fruits stimulates radiation chemical processes resulting in the formation of new chemical products and free radicals giving rise to multicomponent EPR signal which can be detected for a long period of time. For that reason, it is used as a marker for the detection of radiation treatment of dried fruits. It has been found that EPR spectra recorded in dried banana, pineapple, papaya, and fig samples resemble the EPR spectrum obtained by computer addition of fructose and glucose spectra taken in proportion 1:1. The decay of radiation induced EPR signals proceeds in dried fruits fast during the first month of observation and becomes much slower and almost negligible after prolonged storage. However, it remains intense enough for EPR detection even one year after processing. The radiation induced EPR signal is easily detected in dried fruits exposed to 0.5 kGy of gamma rays. Thus, the EPR method of the detection of irradiated fruits can be used for the control of dried fruits undergoing quarantine treatment with 200–300 Gy of ionizing radiation.

Detergents at waters inducing negative changes for biological degradability and water general quality. Some authors have evidenced a considerable amount of anionic surfactant and toxic effects into natural water and effluents related to detergents. The objective of the study was to apply electron irradiation for reducing toxicity, and for degradation of surfactants. To quantify surfactant LAS determination as MBAS (metylene blue active substances) was applied. The capacity of radiation to reduce surfactants was evidenced for real effluent and for water solution containing sodium dodecyl sulfate, linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS), separately. An electron beam accelerator (EBA) 1.5 MeV was the radiation source. Anionic surfactant solutions as well as real effluents resulted in less toxic samples after irradiation. Toxicity was evaluated for Vibrio fischeri and Daphnia similis. An important decline of total anionic surfactant was observed after irradiation to doses: 6.0 kGy and 20 kGy (surfactant in water solutions and effluents, respectively). To conclude, EBA irradiations accounted for 88% to 96% less toxic surfactants solutions and effluents and 68% to 96% for MBAS compounds decomposition.

In this connection the diversity of radioisotopes distribution in nature can be observed. The key aim of the presented work was to ascertain the presence of radioactive elements and their decay products in the environment. Nuclides were emitted by selected conventional coal-fired power plants located in the south of Poland. The samples from the neighbourhood of three power plants and a sample from “clean” territory were measured. Additionaly, we measured the concentration of 137Cs istotope descended from the Chernobyl disaster.

The HBT radii extracted in pp and pp collisions at SPS and Tevatron show a clear correlation with the charged particle rapidity density. We propose to explain the correlation using a simple model where the distance from the initial hard parton-parton scattering to the hadronization point depends on the energy of the partons emitted. Since the particle multiplicity is correlated with the mean energy of the partons produced we can explain the experimental observations without invoking scenarios that assume a thermal fireball. The model has been applied with success to the existing experimental data both in the magnitude and the intensity of the correlation. The model has also been extended to pp collisions at the LHC energy of 14 TeV. The possibilities of a better insight into the string spatial development using 3D HBT analysis are discussed.

Opis:
The concept of closed nuclear fuel cycle seems to be the most promising options for the efficient usage of the nuclear energy resources. However, it can be implemented only in fast breeder reactors of the IVth generation, which are characterized by the fast neutron spectrum. The lead-cooled fast reactor (LFR) was defi ned and studied on the level of technical design in order to demonstrate its performance and reliability within the European collaboration on ELSY (European Lead-cooled System) and LEADER (Lead-cooled European Advanced Demonstration Reactor) projects. It has been demonstrated that LFR meets the requirements of the closed nuclear fuel cycle, where plutonium and minor actinides (MA) are recycled for reuse, thereby producing no MA waste. In this study, the most promising option was realized when entire Pu + MA material is fully recycled to produce a new batch of fuel without partitioning. This is the concept of a fuel cycle which asymptotically tends to the adiabatic equilibrium, where the concentrations of plutonium and MA at the beginning of the cycle are restored in the subsequent cycle in the combined process of fuel transmutation and cooling, removal of fission products (FPs), and admixture of depleted uranium. In this way, generation of nuclear waste containing radioactive plutonium and MA can be eliminated. The paper shows methodology applied to the LFR equilibrium fuel cycle assessment, which was developed for the Monte Carlo continuous energy burnup (MCB) code, equipped with enhanced modules for material processing and fuel handling. The numerical analysis of the reactor core concerns multiple recycling and recovery of long-lived nuclides and their influence on safety parameters. The paper also presents a general concept of the novel IVth generation breeder reactor with equilibrium fuel and its future role in the management of MA.
