Opis:
The ‘Little Medic’ project has been carried out at Poznan University of Medical Sciences for six years. It enjoys great popularity. Every year, about 400 pupils from primary schools from Poznan and the surrounding area in the age of 6–12 participate in it. The study aims to present the organizational specificity of the ‘Little Medic’ project, and the opinions about it expressed by teachers participating in the project with their students. At the end of each academic year, teachers take part in an anonymous survey summarizing and assessing the project. The first part of the article presents the method of the ‘Little Medic’ project organization. In particular, it describes the elements distinguishing the project from other children’s universities in Poland. The second part presents the analysis of evaluation data collected during the six years of the project. Long experience in running classes for children as part of the ‘Little Medic’ project allows for conclusions about the usefulness and innovativeness of this form of lesson conduct, and the survey results confirm the high level of teachers’ satisfaction with the proposed way of organizing classes.

The Children’s University of Interesting History has been a part of Warsaw educational market for six years. The case study included in the paper illustrates the university’s unique methods and attitude towards students. The author analyzes different teaching methods and educational goals concerning every university group, from the youngest students – Observers and Explorers, by Travelers and Researchers up to the oldest – Creators. Such a diversified approach allows building the coherent vision of history. Teaching this vision is the basic concept of the Children’s University of Interesting History, which is also visible in practice. Referring to what Leszek Kołakowski says, one may call such approach a translation project.

Opis:
The article describes the history of a specific type of the University of the Third Age which was developed in Poland and spread out to other countries in the region. The author describes the genesis of this type of education as well as the criteria which governed changes in educational institutes for seniors. Above all, the article discusses the innovative solutions, education practices, and trends which initiated the post-2000 boom in adult education in Poland. The author summarizes and structures the experience gained while working as the Director of the University of the Third Age at the University of Wroclaw in years 2006–2016, with particular reference to the national and international perspective. Remarks of the reflexive practitioner are compared and contrasted with ultra-local trends and take the form of meta-analysis. The results lead to one fundamental conclusion – in Poland a specific model for the education of seniors was formed. We may describe it as bottom-up, democratic, holistic and flexible.

Opis:
The application of computer-based technologies in academic education has at least three decades of history and experience. In some study fields, it has been present since the very beginning, while in others it has become a necessity only in recent years. The ongoing technological revolution is disrupting the traditional professions with fundamental changes and – in some cases – even with the threat of disappearance of jobs. The finance and accounting professions are expected to undergo a technological change in the near future. While the changes are visible at the corporate level, university education seems to lag one step behind. We conducted a study among the students and graduates of the finance and accounting line of studies at the Cracow University of Economics. Using regression analysis, we investigate the perception of the usefulness of courses providing knowledge on new technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI). We use a unique Polish setting, which is a leader in terms of outsourcing services. Our findings show that both students and graduates are aware of the importance of technological change. The courses teaching basic subjects are essential, but the current expectations are much higher in terms of the application of new technology based on AI in finance and accounting.

This article presents the results of a qualitative study on the transformation of self-perception of older women and their functioning under the influence of educational activity at the university of the third age. The goal of the study was to identify the process of changes in self-perception and perception of one's old age under the influence of activity related to the participation in the UTA. The studies employed case study with in-depth interview (IDI). The results are presented from two points of view - one of an expert - Dean and lecturer at the UTA over the course of two years, and one of older women participating in UTA classes. The analyses show that the participation of female seniors in this form of education influenced on changes in both the perception of the process of one's ageing and the way of functioning, and also significantly improved the quality of their life in various aspects. The ability to self-learning should be shaped from the very beginning of school education. It is a very important skill, because it is used in higher education, where the learner explores and analyzes the problems in cognitive purposes. According to the results of empirical research, conducted by the authors among the students of University of Lodz since 2008, students are becoming more and more erratic, need contacts with academics, have a lower level of motivation to self-study. The research also shows that the percentage of students who don't have the ability to self-learning is rising. Students are neither prepared to study at university nor to be active self-educators in the later stages of life. The purpose of the paper is to indicate the need for changes in the system of higher education, which are necessary to make students active self-learners who will be ready to develop goals, methods and techniques of learning. Those changes should be about creating conditions for students to develop their ability to self-learning and preparing them to self-development in later stages of life. The theoretical part of the article was based on literature studies. The authors used books, articles and internet publications about self-learning and Polish universities. The empirical part of the paper contains the results of empirical research conducted by the survey technique. These research were carried out between 2008 and 2012. The respondents were students of the Faculty of Management, University of Lodz.

Higher Education Institution (HEI)
Opis:
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, digital transformation has significantly accelerated in many industries, including somewhat slow-changing higher education. The epidemic situation pushed students, faculties, and administrators to experiment to a much greater degree with online classes, digital cooperation, and virtual student services. For the majority of the academic community, this situation created a completely new reality. Indeed, the digital experience in higher education was for some community members quite challenging, if not traumatic. Fairly soon, however, the digital experiment proved successful in many areas. In some cases, even more effective than conservative practices. The Virtual University Concept (VUC) has been a topic of debate for quite some time, but only now has it found a receptive audience in all sectors of the academic community. In the following articles, the authors will attempt to conceptualize the virtual university as an innovative way to address contemporary challenges for Higher Education Institutions (HEI), specifically their ability to identify, create and capture value for students. The concept of the VUC is grounded in a literature review, the professional experience of the authors, as well as the student survey, which was conducted in one of Cracow’s private colleges. The authors have listed fundamental areas of focus that need to be addressed before attempting to model the VUC. They include the technical and technological capacity of a HEI, faculty development, cost management, innovation, and students' and employers' value perceptions. All this must be done with the goal of providing value to key stakeholders at a reasonable cost. All the authors' inquiry streams seem to suggest that if well designed and implemented, the VUC can be a source of significant value to students and therefore should be considered in HEI expansion and turnaround strategies.

Opis:
An analysis of literature shows that higher education institutions can actively influence the development of students' cultural intelligence (CQ) and thus express their social responsibility. The article's main aim is to diagnose the level of cultural intelligence among students of public economics universities in Poland and to determine the relationship between CQ and factors such as field of study, degree, and gender. This article was developed using research methods such as literature analysis, organizational documentation analysis, participant observation, and a Computer-Assisted Web Interview (CAWI) survey. The respondents were second-year full-time students, both bachelor and master’s degree, of two majors: Management and International Economic Relations (in Polish Międzynarodowe Stosunki Gospodarcze – MSG for short). The study shows that the cultural intelligence of students of public economics universities in Poland is relatively high. No influence of gender on CQ was determined. Contrary to assumptions, it was not observed that MSG studies influence students' CQ development. The correlation between the degree of reflection and the level of cultural intelligence differs depending on the field of study. At each of the three universities studied, no significant differences were found in the overall level of cultural intelligence between students of the two studied majors.

The author of this paper provides a detailed discussion on the idea of teaching foreign languages to children and youth in the aspect of developing bi- and multilingualism. The main aim of this article is to present the concept of concurrent foreign language learning that has been pursued by the Mały Poliglota Children’s University at the Faculty of Philology at the University of Szczecin (Poland) since 2012. The article involves a description of the concept of the Mały Poliglota Children’s University with due account of the latest research in the field of language education and guidelines of modern language policy (in the European Union and in Poland). The paper presents methodological solutions which have been applied and the obtained implementation results. Moreover, the author refers to the specificity of teaching in a unique region of Poland, namely, West Pomerania, a border area, and discusses local conditions that affect the suggested foreign language teaching offer. The main idea of the creators of the Mały Poliglota Children’s University is to promote and develop the child’s and young people’s multilingualism by allowing them to participate in regular professional language classes organized at a higher education institution, conducted by well-qualified language instructors – academic teachers, and implemented based on the original curricula. The project concept covers concurrent teaching of two foreign languages supported by cultural and general development activities. Educational offer of Mały Poliglota currently involves the following language groups: English and Russian, German and Spanish, and Norwegian and Italian. This offer not only makes the Mały Poliglota Children’s University stand out in the market of language classes for the youngest in Szczecin but is also unique in Poland. The described principles are currently implemented as part of the Mały Poliglota Children’s University project, co-financed by the European Union with the funds of the European Social Fund (project no. POWR.03.01.00-00-U032/17).

Open Educational Resources (OER) are training materials and tools that support both learning and teaching. This phenomenon is inextricably linked with a broader concept - open education, which calls for the removal of barriers to teaching so that learners can acquire knowledge following their educational and training needs. The aim of the article is to familiarize the readers with the idea of open educational resources, the legal and organizational foundations crucial for their creation and development, as well as the latest initiatives undertaken in the field of OER dissemination. In the first part of the article, the authors explain the concept and role of open educational resources in the teaching process. Then, they present selected initiatives implemented by members of the European Network of Open Education Librarians (ENOEL) and the results of a survey conducted among European academic libraries by SPARC Europe. The analysis of publications, the content of legal documents, reports, and recommendations made it possible to precisely define the meaning of open educational resources for their users. The multifaceted nature and scale of the activities confirm that modern teaching can develop faster based on open educational materials.
