Opis:
During the first two decades of the twenty-first century, we can observe an unprecedented shift in the practice of theatrical translation and a revision of the role of the theater translator. Nowadays, scenic translation methods, including surtitling, put in question the traditional perception of the key concepts of translatology such as translator, equivalence, translation process and methods or even the text. In this paper, based on the theoretical works, the voices of the researchers and theater professionals, the author discusses the status and roles of the theatrical translator as well as the challenges of his activity in the context of the modern theories of theater translation.

This paper concentrates on the translation of the text-image interaction in postmodern and multimodalpic turebooks for children, as illustrated by the Polish translations of Hervé Tullet’s picturebooks. The sophisticated and artistic vision of this author-illustrator raises questions about methods and criteria to be adopted by anyone who wishes to translate the delicate balance between what is told by the verbal and pictured by the visual. In particular, as the present analysis reveals, the translator’s interventions in the original text-image interaction cannot be regarded as intersemiotic translation, but as undesired explicitation limiting the creative actions of the active child-reader.

Translation
Opis:
Traditionally, literary translation was discussed in terms of form and content dichotomy. Yet when we take a closer look, translation is a complex phenomenon inscribed in a particular social and cultural space. In this article we investigate translation from three different perspectives: linguistic, social, and hermeneutical. The first focuses on the interlinguistic transfer, the second on the society that regulates professional behavior, while the last approach gives insight into the translator's subjectivity able to question the social order and defend transgressive practices of translation.

The aim of this article is to provide an answer to the question about the current state of advancement of computer-assisted translation tools. We assume that several decades of research in the field carried out by the EU institutions in the context of the European integration process have provided the most advanced computer-assisted translation tools available in the biggest translation service in the world, i.e., the Directorate General for Translation of the European Commission. The present work therefore focuses on the following three main types of CAT tools employed by the EU translators: translation memory tools, terminology management tools and machine translation tools. The same types of tools, offered by the EU providers, i.e. SDL and SYSTRAN, are also used by translators working outside the EU structures. We can therefore presume that the EU translation services set work standards which are then accepted by all professional translators. For that reason, in order to define the most probable directions of future development of these tools, this article also reports the current research conducted by the EU in the CAT tools field.

This paper discusses the stages of the translation process and their ideological features. Teaching translation, which includes an explanation and a simulation of the whole process, is supposed to acquire a new ideological dimension since it takes place in the classroom. The translation process is defined as a series of negotiations and decisions made by several “ideological subjects” involved in carrying out a particular translation service. The simulation of this process is suggested as a didactic method of teaching translation and indicated as a useful introduction into the market of professional translation. The study emphasizes a more active performance of students in learning translation. It also includes some didactic recommendations and explanations of the ideological burden always present in the practice of translation. The paper is mainly based on the Manipulation School approach in Translation Studies.

The introduction of translation technologies, especially translation memory software, has had a significant impact on both the translator’s professional practice and the target text itself. Apart from the fact that he or she must translate in a non-linear fashion due to the design of translation memory systems, the translator is now called upon to increase output and, in many cases, recycle what has already been translated by others. As a result, the translator, used to having full control over his or her text, is in some regards losing control over the translation process, which brings him or her to reflect on the quality of the final product and, in turn, on the transformations the field of specialized translation is undergoing. In this paper, I will present the results of an important ethnographic study conducted in three Canadian translation environments. I will focus mostly on the effects translation technologies and newly implemented practices have had on the quality of specialized texts destined for the Canadian market, where most of the specialized texts produced in French are in fact translations. Special attention will be given to the comments made by specialized translators during semi-directed interviews.

This paper intends to study the phenomenon of calqued translation from French into Polish "euro-language". Its main part is focused on different derivation products, in particular: created in the process of prefixation and pseudo-prefixation (called also: telescoped wordsformation) French EU-terms and their Polish translations. The formal and semantic analysis allows to distinguish their lexicogenic structure differences and some categories of calqued translation procedure. The main purpose is to show how the morphological calque functions in contact of two families of different (Roman and Slavic) languages. However, as important for EU-affairs, some English and German equivalent terms are also added, in order to foreground the universality of calque procedure in the principal EUworking languages word-formation.

In this paper the author demonstrates the limits of audio description in the transfer of the humorous effects of a film comedy which constitute the “semantic dominant” of this kind of production. The analysis is illustrated by examples from Philippe de Chauveron’s film, À bras ouverts (2017). In this form of intersemiotic translation, the lack of certain visual data can block the possibility of understanding the comic by blind or visually impaired people. The author tries to propose some solutions to this problem in the form of creative audio description.

Translation of political discourse is one of specialized translation central issues. In this kind of translation, not only are translators required to be familiar with both terminology and phraseology of the field in question, they are also compelled to be a walking encyclopedia due to the diversity of topics that could be dealt with in such texts. Thus, the translation of political discourse proves to be an uphill battle putting a huge responsibility on the translator’s shoulders who must be ultracautious when trying to choose the most appropriate and accurate equivalents, for such texts are highly sensitive and any tiny mistake can lead to conflicts, even wars, between nations. The scope of this paper is to examine the process of this type of translation and explore the dilemma of whether or not to consider the translation of political discourse as a kind of specialized translation.

In the world 2.0, dominated by Big Data and transmedia, the figure of a translator who is alone with the complexities of the text seems to be replaced by group translations. Our era, which has become “cocreative”, “co-participative”, promotes collective behavior (such as coworking and crowdsourcing), also those in the field of translation. The practice of joint translations may take the form of funsubbing, which amateur translators are passionate about, but it is increasingly entering university walls (joint translations of the plays or participatory transcription of G. Flaubert’s manuscripts). It is possible that the meaning to be conveyed is no longer the main driver of the activities of this new generation of collaborating translators and that there are also other goals that collaborating translators put together. This article is an attempt to describe and understand this new translation practice and its role in disseminating knowledge and culture.

Many books designed for international distribution combine text blocks and images. Their layout offers hybrid messages organized on the visual space of a double page. Texts both in the original language and in translation must fit into limited spaces or boxes positioned around illustrations. Thus, translators practice multimodal translation, writing texts that preserve or enhance the cohesion between visual and textual messages. This skill requires some training. Unfortunately, while theoretical writings on pragmatic translation acknowledge its intersemiotic nature, few training programs address this aspect. The creation of a course on multimodal translation would be a valued addition to any translator training program. The concept of a hybrid translation unit offers a way of structuring material to introduce both intersemiotic and multimodal translation in professional curricula. The author draws on her professional experience to discuss the role of illustrations in grasping meaning through practical examples. She suggests generalizable translation strategies to strengthen text-image cohesion, or even generate text from images alone, while adapting the book in translation to its intended readership.

The audiovisual text constitutes an inherent and obvious whole, the components of which, being linked to each other and entering into different types of relations and interactions, contribute to the construction of its meaning. This article presents a study of cases where visual information influences decisions made by the translator and ultimately sometimes changes the translation of dubbed dialogues. In the analysis, the following examples are distinguished:– those in which, under the influence of the image, the translator modifies the source text (compared to the original version) by adapting it to the visual contents of the audiovisual document, or by adding information to the target text;– one in which, under the influence of the image, both the author of the original version and the translator modify one of the elements of a given idiomatic expression. In this regard, contemporary computer-animated films (such as « Shrek 2 », « Madagascar » and « Monsters, Inc. »), aimed at all types of audiences and translated for dubbing, where the visual component plays a prominent role, represent interesting cases.

The oral character inherent to a theatre and the hybrid or multilingual character of modern French Canadian literature invests it with functions that pertain strictly to the spoken word and that translator must take into account. This paper examines translation strategies proposed and applied in English and Standard-French translations of the play "Le Chien", written by Franco-Ontarian playwright Jean-Marc Dalpé. In the play "Le Chien" the hybrid character of language and abundance of swearwords constitutes a symptom of inability to communicate of protagonists and animality of their discourse. This specificity, crucial in terms of interpretation of the play, is the major obstacle in translator’s work because he needs to target the specific, English and French-speaking audience which is unilingual and doesn’t have the same cultural experience.
