POLES IN THE UK
MIGRATION
MOBILITY
Opis:
This article is concerned with issues of travelling home in narratives of migration, drawing particular attention to the journey itself, which I examine as an increasingly important aspect of overall personal mobility. Freedom of circulation within the European Union made the borders inside the EU space less important to those who have the right of free movement. More recently, the expansion of the EU in 2004 and the availability of cheaper, more frequent and more accessible air travel connections, has allowed for new forms of mobility, based on more frequent return visits for Eastern Europeans, who have gone to work and live in Britain. In recent years, the “visiting friends and family” (VFR) mobility type has been the fastest growing segment of inbound air traffic in the UK, accounting for almost half of all trips within European Union (CAA Passenger Survey 2006). Drawing on the narratives and interview data with “new” Polish migrants in England, this paper argues that the social content of migrant mobility and visits home is of increasing importance. Many Polish migrants in England are now dependent on this form of mobility not only for sustaining social ties, but also in case of negotiation of their social status and displaying the achievements of migration. I argue, amongst other things, that the visit home is also a fundamental part of new mobility patterns and a crucial stage in the negotiation of migration itself. I am suggesting that the ways in which the journey home and the distance between England and Poland are encountered by Polish migrants, are critical to their understandings of migration. Because of the figurative proximity between Poland and England and “when desired” nature of their movement, Polish migrants are placed in a position of privilege and control regarding their mobility.

Opis:
This article analyses the factors that determine changes in the occupational position between the first and the current job in Spain among Polish immigrants residing in the Community of Madrid. The main objective is to establish if, and to what extent, working in gendered ethnic niches has an impact on occupational mobility in the host country. Combining quantitative and qualitative research methods, the data reveal stark differences in the occupational mobility of male and female populations. Compared to males, females experience higher inter-sectoral, and lower occupational mobility. Furthermore, the analysis shows that upward mobility depends on the opportunities offered by the structure of each sector, as well as on gendered productive and reproductive roles. Among men, the likelihood of upward mobility is not increased by entering or abandoning the ethnic niche. In contrast, women who left the niche between their first and current job in Spain have higher probabilities of upward occupational mobility. Because women with children often depend on the convenience of the flexible schedules in the domestic service sector, this niche is more often abandoned by women who have no children or who are highly motivated (with a higher level of education).

Opis:
The article reflects on the role of mobility within transition to adulthood process. It will present the results of research focusing on the transitions to adulthood of representatives of the generation born at the beginning of the 1980s in Poland. This boom generation experienced both the transformation from a communist to a capitalist state, as well as the joyful and hopeful moment of Poland’s accession to the EU in 2004. Post-2004, faced with high unemployment, the representatives of this age cohort decided to leave Poland en masse in search of employment opportunities. Based on biographical interviews with young Poles born in the early 1980s and living in Poland, the article reflects upon the meaning of mobility and migration experiences in their young age. What was mobility impact on different transition to adulthood trajectories – employment, family or independent living? How has it affected the concept of adulthood? In the article, the mobility experience will be looked upon through the lenses of theories of youth studies, which is a recent trend in analyzing young people’s mobility or migration. The article points to the three meanings of mobility: mobility as an experience of semi-independence, mobility as time to gain adulthood, and mobility as a celebration of youth. As the experience of this cohort is unique in the historical sense, it is also exemplary for the growing importance of mobility in transitions to adulthood.

Opis:
I explore how working-class Polish parents come to identify with their new localities despite their limited command of English, building just a few, but necessary bridges into the English-speaking community, e.g. by learning to decipher letters from children’s schools, or attending English masses in the weeks between Polish ones. Despite the apparent sparseness of these ties, parents who have lived in Bath or Bristol for a few years already feel quite strong attachments to the local area and are not interested in moving elsewhere in England. Feelings of wanting to stay put are enhanced by parents’ exhaustion after the period of intense mobility by all parties while only the husband was working in the UK. Simultaneously, parents – usually both from the same place in Poland - maintain close ties with their original home locality. This is the only place to which they would consider return. Different family members are attached to that Polish locality to different degrees, but it seems uncommon for one to persuade the rest of the family to go back.

QUANTITATIVE APPROACH
Opis:
The social and geographical mobility, including international migration, interlink and interplay but are approached by different research methods. This article makes an effort to combine these approaches of researching mobility. The studies on social and occupational mobility of migrants may relate to, at least, three dimensions: (1) between sending and receiving countries (a comparison of the pre-departure and during migration socio-occupational positions of migrants); (2) in the receiving country (socio-occupational positions of migrants are compared to those of natives); (3) in the sending country (a comparison of the pre-on-post migration socio-occupational positions of migrants). The article considers the third approach. First part relates to the critical analysis of various approaches of researching social mobility and international mobility. In the following, as based on the nearly two decades of studies of Centre of Migration Research, University of Warsaw, various options of analyses of occupational careers of international migrants have been presented. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches have been taken into account in this article. Therefore, this article made possible an analysis of pros and cons of both approaches and brought an evidence that they complement each other while studying occupational careers of migrants.

Opis:
Poland’s accession to the EU exponentially increased the mobility of its citizens and changed the geography of Polish migration to Western Europe. Poles go abroad to improve their livelihoods: to work, earn competitive wages, and to study. Post-accession migrants hail mainly from small communities. The paper is based on empirical research in a small community of Wronka in the West Pomeranian Voivodship. The goal of this case study was to reconstruct the history of labour mobility of Wronka’s residents, identify migration paths of their families, and analyse the effects of labour migration on the sending community. Departing from the customary analytical lens, this study analyses Polish mobility from the point of view of the sending, not the destination community. In the context of Wronka, mobility has become the norm in this previously immobile community centred around the state-owned farm, and appears to be a strategy used to cope with social, economic, and political change.

The basis for this research is 38 interviews with mobile PhDs candidates. It is shown that general knowledge about these programs is limited but positive, as the programs are known for their prestige. Universities and colleagues are the main distributors of information. Th e majority of our sample are not taking part in such programs and have no concrete plans to do so. This may be connected to their status as early-career scientists and their uncertain future.

Opis:
Surprisingly little is known about the developmental years of the Protestant Reformer John Calvin, yet scholars agree that experiences in Calvin’s youth were critical to shaping his theology. It is possible that insights from TCK studies can aid Calvin scholars? Calvin does fit the profile of a TCK. He spent his teenage years living away from his family home in a distinct cultural enclave. Furthermore, he not only thought of himself as one foreign or apart, he exhibited a number of TCK characteristics. Assuming Calvin was a TCK, it is possible to analyze his personality, his theology, and his scriptural interpretation through the lens of modern socio-scientific research on highly mobile populations. Such analysis illumines the insights of Calvin scholars who have already identified Calvin’s experience of cultural and geographic mobility as the root of his patterns of social behavior, theological concepts such as an emphasis on the sovereignty of God, and his empathy with scriptural narratives involving pilgrimage. More importantly, the usefulness of TCK research in studying John Calvin suggests that modern socio-scientific studies of highly mobile populations may be equally valuable to historians working on other groups or individual or in other fields.

YOUNG POLISH PEOPLE
Opis:
‘Mobility’ is a zeitgeist of the European Union. European enlargement and the removal of borders in Central and Eastern Europe has reinvigorated geographical mobility in Europe while the extension of neo-liberal economic reform across the region has been said to offer opportunities for social mobility to a new demography. The right to spatial and social mobility in the EU is described as enhancing freedom, opportunity and choice for large numbers of people living in Central and Eastern Europe, yet the reality for many people living and working across borders in the EU is marked still by poverty, uncertainty and immobility. How do we conceptualise this inequality within a discourse of ‘free movement’ and ‘equality of opportunity’ in Europe? In this paper I will discuss theories of mobility that have shaped the discourse on mobility and immobility in the EU in recent times. I will explore the ways in which this discourse has contributed to an almost immutable acceptance of the EU as a ‘mobile space’. Adding to this I will present some early empirical findings from case studies in the Edinburgh, Scotland and Krakow, Poland to show that the everyday experiences of young Polish people who negotiate the invisible borders of the EU to find ‘opportunities’ has many dimensions, raising further questions about how ‘mobility’ is perceived and enacted by young Polish people living and working in the UK.

Opis:
This article concernes Third Culture Kids (TCKs), i.e. persons, who due their parents’ work spent a significant period of their childhood or school years in a different country than that of their parents. Due to the fact that in today’s globalizing world more and more people experience working abroad and many of them are accompanied by their families, the issue of the consequences of such a mobile and multicultural childhood becomes extremely important. The author has conducted 53 biographical interviews with adult Third Culture Kids. The biographical consequences of moving in one’s childhood are analyzed in a few spheres: professional life, social relations, psychological problems, and identity construction. TCKs are most often from the families of diplomats, professionals working abroad on contracts, employees of international firms. The vast majority of them has tertiary education and chooses a career which gives independence, the possibility to travel and capitalize cultural competences, which one has acquired thanks to his or her upbringing. Unfortunately, such a lifestyle since childhood is associated with the risk of psychological (ranging from the lack of embeddedness to depression) and social (e.g. sense of alienation, difficulties in engaging in deeper relations) problems. Building a coherent and long-lasting identity is also a challenge for Third Culture Kids. The author describes means of dealing with the above-mentioned problems.

Opis:
Buriacka inteligencja odwołuje się do odległej przeszłości Hunów i o tysiąc lat bliższego imperium Czyngis-chana, szukając w obu przypadkach wzoru doskonałego sposobu życia. Utraciwszy ruchliwy tryb życia pod wpływem długofalowych procesów społecznych oraz przymusowego osiedlenia i kolektywizacji w latach 20. i 30. XX w., Buriaci obecnie wracają w ideologiach i formach kulturowych do idei wartości życia nomadycznego.
The article is based on intensive anthropological fieldwork in ethnic Buryatia (interviews and field observation). The author asks whether spatial mobility is natural for people’s existence, desirable both socially and psychologically, or if it occurs as an effect of economic necessity. The article concentrates on the contemporary Buryat apology of nomadic life. In search for an ideal way of living, the Buryat intellectual elite relates to the distant times of the Huns and to the, succeeding by one millennium, Genghis Chan empire. Having foregone nomadic life due to long-term social processes and forced sedentism and collectivisation in the 1920s and 1930s, Buryats presently invoke the idea of a nomadic way of life in their ideology and cultural activities.

Opis:
In Polish policy circles, despite empirical evidence to the contrary, much of Polish international migration is still debated within traditional conceptual frameworks that regard migration as a unidirectional movement from a country of origin to a country of destination, resulting in settlement or a return home. These conceptualizations however do not reflect contemporary trajectories of Polish migration, which have become much moredifferentiated after the EU enlargement leading to a diversity of migration trajectories. The article aims to explore a complex interplay between the strategies of “settling on the move” and migrants’ embeddedness in pragmatic networks, where trust, reciprocity and mistrust play a pivotal role that may lead to social inclusion or exclusion.

Opis:
This paper focuses on the identity strategies of people who experienced multiple migrations in their childhood. They are sometimes, especially in the USA, referred to as Third Culture Kids (TCK). The author claims that serial migration is connected with some challenges as well as with unique opportunities. The former encompass sense of temporariness, feeling uprooted, difficulties with building deep and stable relationships and constructing cohesive identity. Obviously not every TCK experiences this challenges, and some TCKs cope very well with them, but these are problems mentioned most often by participants of this research. On the other hand however such lifestyle enables young migrants to gain cultural and linguistic competences. In this paper identity dilemmas and strategies in three dimensions are highlighted: agency and control over one’s life, cohesion and continuity and social relations. The paper is based on 53 biographical interviews with adult TCKs of different nationalities.

Opis:
International labour migration is considered by many emigrants as a temporary venture, often planned as a short-term and/or one-time activity. Such a way of understanding work abroad has implications that make it difficult or even impossible for emigrants to return to so-called "normal life". We can even speak of falling into a trap of temporariness or a migration loop. A characteristic feature of this situation is the formation of a space with limited social control, which causes numerous problems. The article is an attempt to describe these problems, which - as they are experienced by emigrants - create, together with the situation on the domestic labour market, a set of factors conducive to falling into and remaining in a loop of temporariness.

Opis:
Emigration is a chronic structural process of the Portuguese society. The discussion and key arguments raised in this chapter are mainly focused on data from a research project on Portuguese skilled emigration. Based on the outcomes of the BRADRAMO2 on-line survey to 1011 highly skilled emigrants it can be suggested that recent phenomena in general, and the crisis that began around 2008 in particular, profoundly transformed the patterns of Portuguese emigration. Nowadays, the country faces a brain drain dynamic that is dramatically altering the profiles of national emigrants, emigration destinations, self-identity, and the strategies of those who leave the country. Academic mobility, mainly that promoted by the European Union (through grants from the Erasmus Program), created and fostered mobility flows that reinforced a latent mobility phenomenon. Once engaged in academic mobility programs, Portuguese higher education students tend to stay in the country of destination or, upon returning temporarily to Portugal, to evince a very strong predisposition to move to a country of the European Union. The profile of Portuguese high-skilled emigrants reveals a trend towards a permanent and a long-term (as opposed to a temporary or transitory) mobility, an insertion in the primary segment of the labor market of the destination countries, a predominance of professionals connected to the academic/scientific system and to professions requiring high skills, and a latent mobility (aft er a period of study in the country of destination) rather than direct mobility flows (after having entered in the employment system of the sending country).
