Opis:
In order to determine the lithological complexes and to evaluate the prospective shale/tight gas zones, analysis of well data and a multi-well correlation have been performed. Over 30 wells were used for the analysis. Lithostratigraphic units have been verified and correlated in the wells. In some of them, TOC (Total Organic Carbon), effective porosity and lithological profiles have been determined after calibration with the laboratory analysis performed on core samples. Vast majority of the gathered data were visualized in 10 correlation lines.

Opis:
Recognition of the hydrogeological conditions of deep aquifers is possible mainly due to research carried out in deep boreholes. Such boreholes have been drilled in Poland since the 1950s. These are mainly exploration wells for hydrocarbon deposits, including research wells. Due to the purpose of these drillings, hydrodynamic and hydrochemical tests of aquifers with thermal waters are rare and carried out to a limited extent. Since 2010, there has been a clear increase in interest in the use of thermal waters in Poland. Due to the hydrogeological and geothermal conditions, the resources of these waters are made available in Poland through deep boreholes. The number of new geothermal wells has doubled in the last decade. Hydrodynamic tests (pumping, and hydrodynamic tests) and hydrochemical tests (analyses of physical and chemical properties of water, tests of the isotopic composition of water) carried out in these boreholes enable detailed characterization of the hydrogeological conditions prevailing in deep aquifers. They allow for the characterization of the pressure conditions in aquifers, the determination of the direction and velocity of groundwater flow, the duration of water in the rock massif, determination of the origin of water and presumed supply areas, as well as the hydrogeochemical characteristics of the waters. Therefore, the use of geothermal resources significantly contributes to the identification of the hydrogeological conditions of deep aquifers.

The purpose of this article is to review the possibilities of using well logging in the exploration and completion of the shale gas plays. This presentation is addressed to a broad geological community. The article was divided in two parts: the first one, already published in PG, which was focused on the borehole logging tools and methods, and the current one, which deals with the construction of petrophysical models and considers some specific aspects of well-logging application in the shale gas plays. For more inquiring readers, a comprehensive list of literature is presented. The construction of petrophysical models in the thin-bedded shale-sand Miocene gas formation of the Carpathian Foredeep is presented briefly as a possible predecessor of the methodology applicable in the shale gas plays based on domestic experiences. However, the application of well logging in shale gas formations, both at the evaluation and completion steps, differs in the methodology in comparison to conventional and even to thin-bed formations. This specificity is also discussed, where attention is focused on the quantity and quality of organic matter and its relation to gas. Low porosity and a special kind of pore space in organic shales are considered as well.

The purpose of this article is to review the possibilities of using well logging in the exploration and completion of the shale gas plays. This presentation is addressed to a broad geological community. The article is divided in two parts, the first is focused on the borehole logging tools and methods, while the second describes the construction of petrophysical models and considers some specific aspects of well logging application in the shale gas plays. For the more inquiring readers a comprehensive list of literature is presented. Well logging is the way to acquire an important geological information from the boreholes, parallel to the core data analysis. Laboratory core analysis gives most reliable and comprehensive description of rock parameters, like mineral and chemical composition, kerogen content and its maturity, porosity, the pore space structure, density, permeability etc. However, this kind of analysis is time consuming and expensive. On the other hand, well logs give less accurate and usually not directly measureable values, which must be interpreted to achieve the requested parameters. These measurements are made continuously in natural rock conditions and the results can be obtained very quickly. Proper calibration methods are necessary to link the logging data and the detailed laboratory core analyses. A wide range of well logging tools is described briefly in the paper, and the electrical, nuclear, NMR, and sonic methods are presented in more detail. Special attention is paid to the great technological progress in well logging during the last two decades. This progress allows to cope with the increasing difficulties in the reservoir evaluation. Complicated geometry of the directional borehole, thin beds, shaly-sand lithologies, low porosities, and the specific the pore space distributions are the main challenges in the shale gas plays.

Opis:
The water supply for Wolsztyn town and the surrounding villages is located in the Warsaw-Berlin ice-marginal valley near the village of Wroniawy. In the early 1990s, a method of groundwater treatment in the aquifer (Hydrox method) was implemented on this water capture. The implementation was preceded by application of a pilot study at one of the wells of the Wroniawy well-field in 1978. Based on the positive results of the pilot study, the method was implemented over the entire well-field, currently consisting of 8 wells that extract waterfrom the ice-marginal aquifer with a yield of approx. 7000 m3/day. The method is usedfor more than 25 years and allows for the efficient removal of iron and manganese, and for the improvement of water quality in relation to colour, ammonia nitrogen and oxidability. Positive effects are achieved despite major changes in water chemistry in operating conditions related to the inflow of water ofpoor quality from the central part of the ice-marginal valley andfrom Wroniawy village. Moreover, application of the method allows for the long-term operation of wells (the oldest wells have been working for more than 20 years) under adverse hydrochemical conditions. The positive effects of treatment, as well as the positive economic effects as compared to traditional treatment, are achieved through the use of appropriate technical solutions and, above all, by proper observance of technological regimes recognized by the operator under hydrogeological supervision. Positive results obtained on the Wroniawy well-field are worth promoting, taking into consideration the fact that implementation of the method in Poland in some cases was improperly conducted, without hydrogeological supervision, which did not allow for obtaining good treatment effects.

Rocks characterized by an increased kerogene transformation ratio, which is an important indicator of hydrocarbon generation in petroleum exploration, generate more radiogenic heat as well. The goal of this paper was to evaluate radiogenic heat (A) in several boreholes drilled through Zechstein and Carboniferous deposits of the Brońsko Reef. Based on spectral gamma ray and Litho-Density Logs measurements, the quantitative concentration of radioactive elements including uranium, thorium and radioactive isotope of potassium (40K) was evaluated. These data along with bulk density were subsequently used to calculate the radioactive heat. The calculations were performed for boreholes B-2, B-3, B-4 and B-8, located in central part of the reef. Increased values of A appeared characteristic for the Main Dolomite, Zechstein limestone and Carboniferous deposits with high share of shales.

The capture area from which groundwater flows to a well and well resources are very important features of groundwater intake. Usually they can be determined on the basis of well pumping test data and using Theis-Jacob's equations. However, evaluations of the above mentioned features are sometimes needed at a preliminary stage, before pumping tests are performed and when equation parameters are still not available. Three pieces of useful advice are here proposed for such cases, namely: using Dupuit's equations for superposition instead of the Theis-Jacob's ones; using a computer program instead of superposition construction by hand; applying a probabilistic approach, using spreadsheet for choosing the suitable groundwater resource value from those obtained by means of different deterministic methods. To explain these tips, some examples regarding an unconfined aquifer are presented.

Results of NMR well logging and laboratory experiments were analyzed. The testing material comprised NMR data from the Upper Jurassic carbonates formation from a well located in the western part of the Carpathian Foredeep. Qualitative analysis of the T1 (longitudinal) and T2 (transverse) distributions from the NMR well logging was performed to illustrate differences in the plots regarding time position and amplitude of peaks in sandstones, carbonates and claystones. Quick identification of the reservoir zones in the borehole section was highlighted. Porosity values from NMR laboratory experiments, helium pycnometer measurements and NMR well logging were compared and the differences were explained emphasizing additional information derived from discrepancies. Permeability was calculated based on the NMR laboratory experiment results comprising free water, capillary-bound water and clay-bound water. NMR permeability calculations were compared with the results of Zawisza formula calculations and results presented by Halliburton Co. The permeability results were different, but the trend of the changes was similar. The analysis shows that NMR logging is very useful in the qualitative and quantitative interpretation of reservoirs despite the difference between the point laboratory results and continuous curves of logging outcomes. The final conclusion is as follows: to complete proper interpretation of very informative NMR laboratory and well logging data the full information about calibration of measurements should be available.

At the beginning of 2015 a research study, which covered the main unconventional hydrocarbon (shale gas) basins in Poland, was completed. The study was coordinated by the General Directorate for Environmental Protection. Field studies and analysis were carried out by the consortium led by Polish Geological Institute – National Research Institute, in collaboration with University of Science and Technology AGH in Cracow and Gdañsk University of Technology. Seismometric monitoring was conducted by the Central Mining Institute. The involvement of more than 60 specialists with interdisciplinary knowledge and international experience has provided high-quality results. The aim of the study was to analyze environmental impact of shale gas exploration, taking into account differentiated geological, geoenvironmental, land use, and technological data. The scope of the study included, among others: the groundwater and surface water, landscape, nature conservation forms, soil, noise and ambient air. The study was performed in 7 exploration areas around 7 different wells and included environment baseline study. The results show that there is no long-lasting, significant impact of shale gas exploration on the environment.

Opis:
This article deals with a significant issue of environmental protection of oil and gas deposits that have recently drawn a considerable attention. The presence of old insufficiently sealed or entirely unsealed wells, formerly serving a purpose of oil and natural gas extraction, pose a significant threat to the environment. In the South Moravia region of the Czech Republic (an area of hydrocarbon extraction both in historical and recent times), there is a significant amount (hundreds) of production wells. It is very difficult or often even impossible to find information in archival materials on the cease of extraction from these wells and on the system of abandonment procedures applied. During the recent surveying and re-abandonment works, it was found that many wells had been abandoned inadequately and unprofessionally, and numbers of wells still have not been abandoned at all. This poses a considerable risk to the South Moravian landscape, especially to the sources of drinking water and to agriculture (to the Protected Area of Natural Water Accumulation - CHOPAV, Morava River Quaternary). Furthermore, it is a significant threat to the areas where extremely valuable biotopes occur. This article discusses the possible disposal of these ecological hazards to the areas of hydrocarbon deposit occurrences through recycling of old drawing wells as potential pollution sources of soil and water. Similar problems have certainly appeared in the Polish territory, where intense extraction took place at a far greater number of deposits, and where the wells already operated in the 19th century, in days gone by when there was little knowledge of abandonment procedures and little awareness of proper old well sealing.
W artykule omówiono ważny problem ochrony środowiska w rejonie złóż ropy i gazu, którym ostatnio poświęcano wiele uwagi.

Opis:
The Polish Carpathian Foredeep Basin (PCFB) is the northern compartment of a foreland basin system that surrounds the Carpathian orogenic belt. The axis of the eastern part of the PCFB plunges gently towards SE, where the Miocene basin-fill succession exceeds 2000 metres in thickness. The Miocene succession developed in shallow marine ramp settings and is subdivided into 3 lithostratigraphic units: sub-evaporitic (onshore-to-nearshore), evaporitic, and supra-evaporitic (offshore-to-estuarine). The upper unit includes a siliciclastic series (Upper Badenian–Sarmatian), which constitutes the main segment of the succession. It displays an asymmetric, shallowing-up trend, expressed by the following sequence: hemipelagic-turbiditic-deltaic-low-energy nearshore-to-estuarine facies associations. Sediment accummulation in the basin has been significantly overprinted by higher-frequency cyclicity and encloses several genetic stratigraphic sequences bounded by MFS surfaces. An early phase of the basin development was characterised by high-rate subsidence and slow-rate sedimentation (hemipelagic facies). The turbiditic facies association identified within the Sieniawa–Rudka area resulted from southward progradation of a submarine fan/prodeltaic depositional system, mainly fed from the northern and north–western continental margins of the basin. An overall SE–ward palaeoslope inclination controlled the main phase of the deltaic progradation, which had gradually replaced the turbiditic systems. The late deltaic phase was characterised by ENE palaeotransport directions. The final phase of the basin filling took place in shallow-water, low-energy, nearshore-to-estuarine environments. In the early stage of the basin development, a complex system of NW–SE elongated basement pop-ups and flower structures in the Miocene succession were produced by reactivation and inversion of Mesozoic basement faults. The growth of these positive structures modified local subsidence patterns and affected the organisation of depositional systems of the siliciclastic series. A narrow elevation of the RyszkowaWola High (RWH) gradually grew above one of the pop-up structures. Complex structural-stratigraphic hydrocarbon traps developed along the RWH, due to interaction between the growth of local faults and the development of the successive depositional systems. Tidally-modified delta-top and estuarine facies are the most common hydrocarbon hosts within individual sequences of the „deltaic” segment of the succession..
