At the beginning of 2015 a research study, which covered the main unconventional hydrocarbon (shale gas) basins in Poland, was completed. The study was coordinated by the General Directorate for Environmental Protection. Field studies and analysis were carried out by the consortium led by Polish Geological Institute – National Research Institute, in collaboration with University of Science and Technology AGH in Cracow and Gdañsk University of Technology. Seismometric monitoring was conducted by the Central Mining Institute. The involvement of more than 60 specialists with interdisciplinary knowledge and international experience has provided high-quality results. The aim of the study was to analyze environmental impact of shale gas exploration, taking into account differentiated geological, geoenvironmental, land use, and technological data. The scope of the study included, among others: the groundwater and surface water, landscape, nature conservation forms, soil, noise and ambient air. The study was performed in 7 exploration areas around 7 different wells and included environment baseline study. The results show that there is no long-lasting, significant impact of shale gas exploration on the environment.
