- Natural waters in mountain areas are characterized by a high coloured matter content and turbidity, especially during heavy rains and snow melting. A conventional treatment train for mountain water, which consists of filtration and disinfection, is insufficient to provide drinking water of appropriate quality. To eliminate this drawback it is necessary to include coagulation as a unit process. The present paper describes a pilot-scale study into the influence of temperature on the efficiency of conventional treatment. The paper also shows an attempt to explain the difficulties encountered when carrying out volume coagulation at decreased temperatures. Winter temperatures have an adverse effect on the coagulation process. Although they do not inhibit the hydrolysis of the alum coagulant, and even though the alum hydroxide floes are able to remove organic substances from water - the flocs themselves have a short life and dissolve.
