Multicultural education is a cross-cutting theme in the state educational programme ISCED 1 – primary education. In primary education, multicultural education can be taught as a separate subject or it can be included in other ongoing subjects. When applying multicultural education it is also important that the teacher doesn’t have prejudices against any ethnic group or nationality. He/she should also use appropriate methods that lead to pupils becoming more tolerant.

Opis:
Meaningful development of productive text competence in pupils of primaryschool age should be based on a detailed analysis of their intuitive conceptualisation of particular text models (narration, description, explication,argumentation), their characteristics and the method of creating text. In this paper we, therefore, focus on an analysis of 8-year-old children and their preconceptions of narration. The findings from the interviews with this group of 8 year-old children are presented in relation to the capacity of a particular pupil to create a narrative text. Utilising the intervention program Self-Regulated Strategy Development (Harris & Graham), we point out the pitfalls in developing the narrative competence of children. In doing so, it is essential to take into consideration the pupil’s conceptual, procedural, and metacognitive knowledge of text production.

Mathematical education at the pre-primary stage sets out its aims which are predominantly focussed on the area of developing the cognitive side of the child’s personality. This area becomes the focus of relevant curricular documents for mathematical education, on the one hand, and influences the actual teaching of mathematics in practice, on the other. Meaningful and effective cross-curricular mathematical education opens a new space for developing the emotional and social skills of the child. The above aspect of mathematical education has the potential to become a determining factor in creating a positive attitude towards mathematics.

The paper concentrates on the historical and contemporary context of the teaching profession. The authors focus on the history and present times of primary school teacher training in the former Czechoslovakia, and in Slovakia, particularly at the Faculty of Education, University of Presov in Presov. They detail important factors which influence the profession – especially socio-political situations, opinions of professionals (experts), the structure of study programmes and strategic planning. They point out that there have been significant changes in teacher training in recent years.

This paper is focused on the preconceptions of children at a preschool age on the topic of the air and the weather. The aim of the paper is to identify and describe the given preconceptions, to further analyse and interpret them and, on the basis of this, to propose investigative activities which would develop these preconceptions of the children. A structured interview was used as the method to find out the preconceptions among the children.

Here’s one option for the diagnosis of literacy which is appropriate for use by children in pre-primary and primary education. At the same time, we present the results of research aimed at diagnosing literacy, which we have implemented for children of preschool age. The diagnosis is based on an innovative concept of understanding literacy and diagnosis, which is in Slovakia so far very little-used. We built a diagnostic tool through the application of digital technologies. We consider this a most effective and entertaining possibility for the diagnosis of children.

Opis:
The aim of this contribution is to assess selected aspects of the development of early childhood education and primary education in the Slovak Republic (SR) during the last twenty years in the context of the process of the transformation of the Slovak education system. Our aim is to emphasise: 1. The formation of a legislative framework for education reforms in SR; and 2. the development of a curriculum for early childhood and primary education. The contribution outlines various mechanisms for curricular transformation which are dependent on mutual configurations and the characteristic components of this difficult process. In the contribution we name the basic factors determining the conditions for the preparation, the implementation process and the assessment of results of education reform in early childhood and primary education. At the end of the article we offer suggestions which we feel could lead to the successful modification or further implementation of education reform in the Slovak Republic.

The paper explores the possibilities for developing reading comprehension by a pupil in primary education in the Slovak Republic. The need for scientific research into developing reading literacy in Slovakia, with its educational implications, is growing as a result of the unsatisfactory state of the current educational context. In this paper, we present an educational strategy focused on the development of comprehension of an informational text in primary school pupils. The strategy is based on the outcomes of previous research on the effectiveness of developing text comprehension on the basis of parallel stimulation of linguistic and cognitive processes. The presented stimulation programme offers a model for school education and for teachers how to proceed with the systematic development of comprehension of an informational text. At the same time, we offer the presented strategy for developing the reading literacy of a pupil for comparison with educational strategies in different countries.

In the context of contemporary reality, the issue of multicultural education is becoming more and more popular. Therefore, the purpose of the article is two-fold: to discuss Banks’ vve dimensions of multicultural education and to share some ideas on how these dimensions are or can be used to assist teachers in integrating multicultural content into their primary foreign language classrooms. Moreover, one section of the paper is devoted to the vgure of Professor James. A Banks, who is widely regarded as a founder of multicultural education. Moreover, the professor’s own rewections on the dimensions of interest expressed in the interview conducted by Tucker in 1998 are presented. Finally, having recognised the importance of early multicultural education, the author of the article concludes that primary foreign language teachers should not hesitate and encourages them to start preparing their students to become unbiased global citizens.
