Opis:
The current standards in roll-over stability of off-road wheeled machines and vehicles do not include many significant factors of their design and performance (e.g. suspension type and parameters, stiffness of tires) as well as operation conditions (e.g. inclination and bearing capacity of the ground). In practice, it results in many dangerous roll-over accidents, particularly of articulated body steer vehicles, which might involve the operator’s death and/or severe damage to the machine and its surroundings. In recent years, some solutions developed and applied by particular companies aimed at roll-over stability improvement have been noticed. Unfortunately, their use appears to be not optimal and the aggregated knowledge remains usually a know-how of the company. For comprehensive explanation of this problem the Division of Off-Road Machine and Vehicle Engineering has built the innovative universal test vehicle for experimental tests on roll-over stability of off-road wheeled machines and vehicles. This unique at global level, universal test vehicle enables the undercarriage structure and properties to be optionally selected and roll-over stability to be tested on special rotary-tilting platform with on-line measurement of three components of reaction forces under each wheel. The paper presents the parameters and research potential of the original universal tests vehicle with the exemplary tests results.

Opis:
A survey was made on the available designs of guard rails, gates and other structures of the type, the "Dzik"-type vehicle might have to ram into during some operations. Basing on the conducted analyses, two typical models of those barriers were constructed. The first, rigid barrier had a form of concrete block of 6000 kg, while the flexible one was made of steel sections. Since no "Dzik" vehicle was available, a series of preliminary experiments were made on a "STAR" truck which had a similar frame and a bumper located at the same level. The vehicle was subjected to a proper load and during the experiment it impacted the constructed barriers. In the course of crash the values of most important parameters (forces, accelerations) were registered. The results obtained allowed for parametrical identification of a numerical model developed using the MADYMO software. Numerical simulations were performed for different crash speed with the numerical models of human and dummies adapted accordingly to take into consideration that the crew is supplied with bullet-proof jackets and helmets. Both the "sled-test" type numerical simulations, in which the accelerations measured in experiment were employed (after proper adjustment, for higher velocities), and simulations of the complete barrier-vehicle-occupant system were performed. Basing on the numerical simulation results the level of risk the crew is exposed to have been estimated, proving the necessity for developing a proper crew protection system. The scope of further experimental and numerical investigations, to achieve the goal, has been determined.
Oryginalne modele, opracowane dla zastosowań „cywilnych", zostały odpowiednio zmodyfikowane — uwzględniono fakt wyposażenia załogi pojazdu w czasie interwencji w kamizelki kuloodporne i hełmy.

The paper reveals peculiarities of a vehicle movement/operation on road curves when the road surface is slippery and/or snowy, with asphalt ruts. The survey of scientific works related to the lateral acceleration and movement dynamics of a vehicle is presented. Field experiments with different vehicles were carried out in winter conditions. The acceleration value and stability parameters depending on the speed of a vehicle and adhesion coefficient on road curves are analysed. Dependence of the vehicle lateral acceleration on road curves with various adhesion surfaces are given in graphical charts. Recommendations how to improve road safety by limitation of the speed in winter conditions are formulated. Finally, basic conclusions are given. Handling the vehicle on the road with the compressed snow surface (on the curve of the radius of 120 m) is much more dangerous when the adhesion coefficient of the wheels and the road is low if compared to handling the vehicle along the dry ruts at the same speed. When the vehicle moves along the curve of 120 m radius at a speed of 70 km/h, and the road surface is snowy, the lateral acceleration of 3.1 m/s2 is reached. The paper indicates that lateral acceleration of 3.1 m/s2 can be reached while moving along the snowy road with dry ruts at a speed higher in 27% (90 km/h). For improving the vehicle safety, it is recommended to have road signs on sharp turns/curves (R less than 120 m) to decrease the vehicle speed in 20 km/h.

Opis:
Process of designing of vehicle suspension as a combination of springs and dampers is a very complicated task. In general it requires designing system respecting good ride comfort and good handling at the same time. It is obvious that these two aspects are dependent also of the type of the road on which vehicle is riding. Especially it is important in city buses which are workplaces for bus drivers and each day are transporting thousands of people. Bus suspension system is quite different from car suspension. Because of the mass and size instead of traditional springs, pneumatics springs are used. In some cases, values of damping and stiffness of the spring are adjusted to the proper road in a real bus while driving. It is necessary nowadays to have a virtual assessment that can simulate "bus suspension behaviour" to abstracted suspension parameters such as springs and dampers characteristics. In this paper a multibody model of city bus suspension has been presented. Multibody models are the best way of simulation of dynamic behaviour of the vehicle. Simulations showing how different types of the road affect the structure of the vehicle have been performed. Such prepared model can be then use as an input for optimization of the bus suspension in terms of ride comfort, handling, or even passengers' safety.

The condition of shock-absorbers is one of factors influencing the in active-safety technology which help drivers to control of their vehicles in the motion. It stuck in the drivers' consciousness, that the damage of the shock-absorber causes the elongation the braking path and the lowering of the drive comfort. The remaining consequences of the worse conditions of shock-absorbers they are not known for the drivers' generality. This impinges on the vehicle motion parameters, its steerability and directional stability. The results of investigations and the analyses of the inefficient shock-absorber influence on vibration damping and the motion of the car were introduced in the presented work. The damping coefficients of the shock-absorber and their change during the exploitation were defined on the basis of test-bed investigations. Road tests were carrying over, on the basis which, try to catch the influence of fault on steerability and the directional stability of the vehicle motion. Road tests were carry over on the A class car. There was compared behaviour of the efficient vehicle and with the worn out shock-absorber. To comparison coefficients various tests are proposed. The road tests were carrying out on A class car with the 4WD driving system, equipped with the drive stability system. Results from individual tests were introduced on graphs.

Road safety is an important social issue. Hence, changes in road traffic rules have a large influence on travel safety improvement. One of the major issues to be addressed is the speed limit of motor vehicles and radar speed measurements. Moreover, road traffic rules impose the obligation to wear safety belts during driving, carrying children in car safety seats and they put a ban on drink driving as well as driving under the influence of other intoxicating substances that have a negative influence on the driver’s physical condition and driving skills. This study analyses changes in traffic rules and provides assessment of the way they affect road traffic safety in Poland. The study presents an analysis of the issues connected with road vehicle operation and safety of the passengers including: wearing safety seat belts, use of children car safety seats, vehicle lighting, speed limit. Such issues as the proposed changes in breathalyzer use and implementation of safety systems to provide road users with safety have been addressed.

Opis:
An important issue, which should be taken into account while analyzing the dynamics of vehicles moving along an uneven road surface, is the proper representation of its real shape. Two mathematical models of the road surface - continuous and discrete were considered in the method presented in this paper. These models were used in the computer simulations of dynamics of a special vehicle with a high gravity centre, which moved along an uneven road surface. The simulations were carried out using the worked out program package, in which four main modules could be differentiated such as: preprocessor, solver, postprocessor and 3D animation. This package was implemented combined with the Blender graphics environment – in authors’ opinion it is an innovative approach. Owing to this models of uneven road surface (theoretically of any shapes) can be built and they are input data for both the solver and animation modules. Additionally, the Blender tool can be used to prepare 3D objects, which are used in the animation process of the moving model of a vehicle. According to the authors', developed program package developed on the basis of the mathematical models for the analyzed vehicle and road surface can be interesting for engineers designing special vehicles. By performing different types of the computer simulations, the engineers can improve the vehicle being built and reduce cost of its road test.

Opis:
The automotive industry is one of the fastest developing branches in the world. From year to year on the roads appear more and more cars. In the modern vehicles, better and more efficient technologies reducing exhaust emission are applied. However, the cars are still the leading source of air pollution, especially in towns and cities. Car exhaust gases have adverse effect on the human health, because they form so-called “low emission”. It means that they are released into the troposphere at the people living height. As a result, people are exposed to the direct and long-lasting contact with the fumes. Therefore, precise assessment is very important to the vehicles’ impact on the quality of the atmospheric air. The review of the evaluation methods of the impact of vehicles on the air quality was presented in the paper, with special regard to the mathematical dispersion modelling of the exhaust gases. In particular, NOx emission by sector in Poland, changing NOx emissions from road transport in Poland in the years 2000-2009 with regard to the change in the number of cars, vertical cross-section of a typical symmetric urban street canyon are presented in the paper.

The work considers changes occurred in the features of the supporting structure in three categories of cars, namely: with the self-supporting body, framed body an intermediate structures between these two solutions. The area of analysis includes the length of deformation (crush) of the front al part of the car after collision with a rigid obstacle (barrier). The range of deformation is a significant factor of the passive car safety and indicates the efficiency of fulfilling the protective function for the passengers. The work shows absolute and relative (percentage and unit) variations of the car deformation, depending on the year of manufacture, including the period of 1980 - 2010. Marked trend lines indicated general nature of the deformation range variations together with the improvement of the car supporting system structures. The course of the trend line has been calculated on the basis of average deformation length values, calculated in defined periods of vehicle manufacture. Selected sections of time result from the division of the period of analysis 1980 - 2010 into six parts. The analysis of the deformation length of the frontal part of passenger cars, SUVs and pickups has been combined with simultaneous evaluation of total car length variations and their weight values. The car weight directly affects the kinetic energy of the impact so it has a significant influence on the range of deformation of the car front during collision with an obstacle.

Road accidents with participation of the children are of particular nature. According to surveys, the older children at the age of 8-12 years are often transported in cars in a wrong way. They are usually fastened with seat belts designed for adult passengers. In order to make the seat belts safe for a child, they should be used together with a booster cushion or a high back booster seat. This paper presents the test results and analysis of dynamic loads affecting a child in the back seat of a passenger car during a frontal collision. The car body was accelerated to a speed of about 48 km/h and then it was suddenly stopped in a time of about 100 ms. The analysis was carried out on the basis of results of experimental tests performed at the collision station in the Automotive Industry Institute in Warsaw. The attention was paid to the influence of protection device type on the P10 dummy, representing a child at the age of about 10 years. Three child protection options during a collision were considered: the dummy was sitting directly in a car seat, on a booster cushion and on a seat. The dummy was fastened with standard seat belts. Evaluation of the protection device influence on the dummy loads was given in association with the operation of the seat belts. During evaluation, the indexes of biomechanical resistance of a human body to the impact load effects were used. They made the basis for the evaluation of the child injury severity risk.

Road safety was and still is one of the real hazards for human society all over the world. In order to manage the problem of excessive road death toll at the both sides of Atlantic two independent initiatives were started in 1970 in the USA in the US Department of Transportation. The paper describes the genesis of intergovernmental European initiative named EEVC, its history, participants and scope of former and current scientific research related to improvements in vehicle design safety. The work was started from the careful analysis of accident statistics data including the severity of accident. The important feature of EEVC working groups is participation of car industry researchers enabling wide verification of scientific achievements. For specific items, it is also shown the practical profit based on knowledge coming from EEVC research. Most important items resolved by EEVC were in-depth study of multidirectional impact mechanics, development of anthropometric dummies, pedestrian safety, passive/active safety interaction, rear under run protection etc. The influence of change in vehicle design appears important for all road users the vulnerable persons including. The relation to other similar international initiatives was pointed together with the future direction of activity and relation to National and International (UN ECE and EC) legislative bodies. The Polish input to EEVC research was described since in 2002 Poland started its participation.

Human body motion during a road accident usually results from the effect of forces of inertia. The analysis of that motion, particularly displacements towards the vehicle interior have significant practical aspect as it facilitates conclusions concerning the mechanisms of danger and injury formation. At the same time, the analysis provides direct indications regarding the improvement of passive safety equipment. The paper presents the time-space diagrams of motion of dummy’s head, neck, torso and hips – the driver of a frame chassis vehicle, identified on the basis of results of the measurements registered in frontal barrier impact and the frame-by-frame analysis of videos recorded during the course of experiment. Courses of these diagrams were associated with acceleration measurement results and forces affecting the parts of the dummy. The experiment showed the complex nature of the influence on the dummy caused by the forces of inertia after a collision of the vehicle with an barrier, vehicle body motion against the frame, reactions in the safety belts, friction on a seat and contact reaction of the vehicle interior equipment. At the same time, it presented the possibilities of indicating the courses of speed variations and dummy displacement as well as significant limitations of calculation possibilities that result from a fact that the process of the impact on the vehicle interior elements is hard to describe.
