Opis:
In the operating marine diesel engines the indication diagnostics tests are usually performed through a 0.5-1.0 me ter long indication channel which delays and disfigures the pressure signal being measured. the delay depends on the engine 's speed and load. the pressure sensor itself together with an amplifler is an additional source of delay and disfigurements, so the registered pressure curve is displaced even if theTDC piston's position hadbeen estimated with the highest accuracy. when the over exploited engine is being tested the angle of delay can achieve several degrees and differ for each cylinder. in that case cylinders' load is unequal and torsional vibrations occur in the engine operation. in case when some simplifying assumptions have been adopted the part of diagnostic information is lost what could lead to a false diagnosis. in the paper the attention is focused on the mistakes which could be made in the marine diesel engine diagnostics when different TDC assessment methods are used. TDC corrections with compression pressure analysis are possible only in case when crankshaft angle position is precise. in case of measurement with constant frequency such corrections are possible only when the engine is good balanced.

Opis:
The largest amount of air pollutants is produced by the combustion of fossil fuels (coal, lignite, petroleum, natural gas, etc.). Such combustion releases huge amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere (including carbon oxides (CO, CO2), sulphur oxides (SO2, SO3), nitrogen oxides (NO, NOx)) and dust, ashes and soot. Transportation is a significant share of the air pollution, mainly wheel-based transportation. The combustion process in diesel engine is very complex physico-chemically and varies in time. The process is accompanied by simultaneous exchange of heat and mass and chemical reactions. The development of internal combustion engines is made towards meeting of the increasingly stringent requirements for toxic exhaust emissions, reduction of fuel consumption, and preservation of Earth's natural resources. The problem to solve in modern diesel engines is the emission of toxic compounds. One way to reduce emissions is to use a catalytic converter positioned directly in the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine. The aim of this analysis is assessment of toxic emissions of a diesel engine with an internal catalyst. Qualitative assessment of engine emissions was determined by comparing test results of an engine with ceramic-ally coated valves against one with just conventional valves (commercial valves - without a ceramic coating). The study utilized a fourcylinder 1.9 TDI VW engine. It was expected that the use of glow plugs with an active coating would reduce the release of toxic compounds.

It is oblivious, various properties of fuels cause different thermal loads of engines. Question is, how big is this effect and what fuel compound and its property play insignificant part. This paper is focused on problem of quality of diesel commercial fuels in Polish market and it is a challenge to find answer for question mentioned above. The academic staff from Wroclaw University of Technology organized tests with different commercial fuels. Chemical and physical properties of these fuels were studied and used for investigation to define relationships between them and thermal load during simulation process. All researches were done in the lab of Division of Motor Vehicles and Internal Combustion Engines at the Wroclaw University of Technology. Tests have showed differences in chemical and physical properties of fuels, but there is no statistics effect on engine parameters. Results have not also pointed any important differences in thermal loads of engine VW1,9 TDI and its components according to different physical and chemical properties of tested fuels. It is probably because there are differences of calorific values from one side but from other hands various density and specific fuel consumption compensated these differences. To burn unit of fuel contains higher level of oxygen, engine needs lower amount of air, so it gives, for the same fuelling system, lean mixture. It causes higher temperature of exhaust gases and a bit higher exhaust losses

Opis:
The paper presents results of investigation of cylinder liners wear. The investigation was carried out on diesel engines during long lasting operation in 5 motor trucks. Cylinder diameters were measured in two perpendicular planes on four depths using 2-point bore gauge, after removal of the cylinder head. Measurements were made every 50 000 km of vehicle mileage. Such methodology of measurements enabled to determine time course and wear profile of the cylinder liners (wear value in relation to the direction and height of the liner). It was stated that increments of diameter during the first period of operation are several times higher than during the later periods, when the wear intensity is constant. It was also found that wear of the cylinder liner in the plane perpendicular to the engine axis is bigger than in the parallel plane, and that wear in the upper part of the liner is twice as big as in its middle part. Measurement scheme for the cylinder liner; histogram of cylinder liner diameters obtained in measurements after the technological running-in of the engine after mileage of 0, 50,000 km, 150,000 km and 250,000 km, wear profiles of cylinder liners in the two directions at different vehicle mileages are presented in the paper. Estimated profiles of the cylinder liner wear will be used as input data for the calculations of the blowby intensity with the use of mathematical model of PRC set.

The objective of the present work is to find out the viable substitute fuel for diesel and control of pollutants from compression ignition engines. Therefore, in this present investigation an attempt has been made to study the effect of 20% proportion of five different biodiesel diesel blend in diesel engine. The 20% proportion of biodiesel such as Jatropha, Pongamia, Mahua, Annona and Nerium and 80% of diesel and it is denoted as J20, P20, M20, A20 and N20 are used in the present investigation. The experimental results showed that the brake thermal efficiency of the different biodiesel blend is slightly lower when compared to neat diesel fuel. However, N20 blend, have shown improvement in performance and reduction in exhaust emissions than that of other biodiesel diesel blends. From, the experimental work, it is found that biodiesel can be used up to 20% and 80% of diesel engine without any major modification. The conducted experiments were conducted on a four cylinder four stroke DI and turbo charged diesel engine using biodiesel blends of waste oil, rapeseed oil, and corn oil with normal diesel. The peak cylinder pressure of the engine running with bio diesel was slightly higher than that of diesel. The experiments were conducted on a four cylinder four stroke diesel engine using bio diesel made from corn oil.

Opis:
It has been agreed to call the loads changing with time and acting in most varied constructional arrangements as well as the stresses accompanying them changeable or cyclic. Changeable stresses produce in the material a very complex entanglement of phenomena and changes depending on the value of those stresses and on the number of cycles. These are fatigue phenomena and changes. They develop successively till the element has been destroyed. This is called the element material fatigue. Thus changing loads and stresses are also called fatigue loads and stresses. The purpose of the presented work was to develop a method of comparative investigations for wet replaceable sleeves in direct contact with coolant that have been submitted to technological treatment of sub-edge zone material strengthening. The source of loads is a cyclically occurring normal component of gas and mass forces in the cylinder. The frequency of changes is a derivative of the number of strokes in the engine run and of the rotational speed of the crankshaft. Fatigue loads can be the reason why cylinder liner cracks in the edge zone. The results of the fatigue testing of the technological process of strengthening the cylinder lines sub-edge zone on crack sensitivity shows differences in the behaviour of particular samples, depending on the parameters of strengthening. The fatigue testing method can be used to evaluate the technological process of cylinder liner.

In the article, light absorption properties of the fuel oil are considered with a view to create basis for establish optical indicator of the type and quality of this kind of crude oil derivative, in this case the Diesel fuel. The organic solvent – n-hexane – was chosen as a solvent to prepare samples of dilutions of Diesel fuel in several oil concentration. Spectrophotometer Aqualog Horiba were applied to record the absorbance spectra in the ultraviolet and visual range of the light (from 240 to 600 nm) for each previously prepared samples. Obtained results allow concluding that the changes of absorbance occur primarily in the wavelength range from 240 nm to 355 nm. Moreover, the absorbance spectra are characterized by the characteristic sharp peak located at 270 nm for excitation wavelength. Spectra of absorbance were converted to spectra of absorption coefficient based on Lambert-Beer law. Due to the independence the absorption coefficient from the fuel concentration, this parameter could be used as a potential indicator to access composition and quality Diesel fuel used in the diesel engine system. Therefore, preliminary tests allow concluding that absorption coefficient for selected wavelength located at 270 nm could be a sensitive indicator for quick access to fuel quality.

The fight against global warming and Earth atmosphere pollution has been for years one of the most important tasks of governments and national economies of the European Union members. Abandonment of efforts leading to reduction mainly of carbon dioxide emission by heavy industry, electric power generation based on coal, passenger aviation and wheeled passenger transport will inevitably be leading to deterioration of health condition of our citizens. This article presents an overview of commonly used structural and technological treatments which have impact on reduction of toxic standardized exhaust pollutants in the surface transport, exemplified on SW 400 engine version of L2 / 3 and its turbocharged version 6CT 107 2/L2. The impact of: engine's adjustment parameters, catalytic afterburners, exhaust gas recirculation, modifications of injectors, turbochargers, supercharging air-cooling and particulates filter on carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and particulates emission was thoroughly examined. The parameters being compared were the results of toxicity tests according to ECE-R49 Regulation and a maximal smoke values on full-load characteristics. In conclusion, of the paper the limiting allowable values of toxic components emitted in Diesel engines exhaust gases in the following EU Emission Standards are presented.

This paper presents the results of comparative research into basic physical and chemical properties of pure diesel fuel and two types of mixtures: Camelina oil ester (Camelina oil ester content in the mixture was 10% and 15%) and diesel fuel. Camelina oil ester was used to show that it can also be used as an additive plant to diesel fuel (according to the plans of the European Union). Similarly to on a large scale used ester of rapeseed oil. The base fuel in the research was clean diesel fuel (without the addition of ester as in the case of diesel fuel available at petrol stations). The use of fuels with different physical and chemical properties to supply the diesel engine and the use of measuring equipment used for determining the parameters of fast-changing operation resulted in the determination of the operating medium average pressure during the combustion process. On the basis of the experimental pressure characteristics of heat release were identified. Analysis of these characteristics determined the proportion of total combustion phases of kinetics and diffusion, depending on the type of fuel and operating conditions. Finally, the paper shows that the fuel with different physicochemical properties has a significant effect on the combustion process. A comparative assessment of the suitability of tested mixtures for operational use was made.

In the paper, the measurement of the marine diesel engine crankshaft residual stresses is presented. The hole drilling strain gauge was chosen because of its simplicity and low cost. Moreover, deflection calculation was made for the load corresponding to its weight and the concentrated force in the chosen bearing conditions. Deflection of the journal and bending rigidity under the concentrated force was calculated as well. In that case, the crankshaft was supported in the neighbouring crank journals. The reduced stresses were calculated according to the Huber – Mises hypothesis. The residual stresses were measured in the marine diesel engine crankshaft type 12V38 after the finishing, with the hole-drilling method. It was found that the residual stresses reach the maximal value of 86 MPa, but for 50% of measuring points, the residual stresses did not exceed the value of 20 MPa. The squeezing stresses were found to be dominant. The measurement results provided important data for further consideration, especially for the correction of the bending deformation of the produced crankshaft.

A major problem in the combustion diesel engines is the different distribution of the mixture of air and fuel and also temperatures inside the combustion chamber. It helps the formation of points of the high and low oxygen concentration in the combustion chamber of the engine. In areas with a high concentration of oxygen, the combustion process produces very harmful NOx, and in places with low oxygen concentration, as a result of incomplete fuel combustion particles are created in the form of soot. This not regular distribution of the mixture of air and fuel and temperatures in the combustion chamber affect the limited maximum engine power and efficiency at his every operating cycle. One method for improving the combustion process is feeding into the engine air with high relative humidity. The study was conducted on a chassis dynamometer at the Department of Vehicles Engineering Wroclaw University of Technology. For the purposes of the study determined the external characteristics, including maximum engine power and maximum engine torque at different air relative humidity and quite similar air temperature. Analysis of the results of research shows that high air relative humidity has a positive effect on the work parameters of the diesel engine.

An important issue in construction of combustion chamber in compression-ignition engines is proper selection of its shape and size. Both features are dependent on several factors such as fuel injector location and angle, spray atomizer selection (amount of holes, their diameter and angular position), location of inlet valve and air turbulence. By doing research on prototype engine T370, an analysis of influence of combustion chamber size and its modifications going towards lip construction on flue gas toxicity was done. The diameter and depth of combustion chamber was being changed while maintaining the same compression ratio. After that, a modification of tested combustion chambers was made by creating so called “lip”, which aim was to create a swirl of injected fuel in the vertical plane. To visualize the changes in swirl, a numerical analysis of fuel injection into combustion chamber was made. In discussed study, emission tests were performed according to ECE-R49. During the research six combustion chambers with diameters 60, 63 and 66 mm (and their modification) were investigated. Tests were performed for several types of injectors and different injection timing. However, for analysis of combustion chamber size the results are presented for the same injectors but with optimized injection timing.

At the moment, there is a growing interest in low-power generating units in dispersed system. The production of energy in small units located in the vicinity of the energy recipients offers considerable benefits. First and foremost, it lowers the cost of energy production and the cost of its transfer and also makes the recipient independent from the domestic supplier. Small cogeneration aggregates will facilitate the use of energy from dispersed renewable resources. Gas self-ignition engines in cogeneration system powered with biofuels can be used in construction industry as ecological sources of heat and electrical energy, limiting the need for fossil fuels. This paper presents the possibility of using alternative fuels for internal combustion engines. It describes the possibility of using liquid biofuels separately or natural gas fuel to power diesel engines in dual fuel system. The conception of supplying low-power generator with diesel engine with natural gas to a dose of liquid biofuels test case. Pointed to the factors determining the desirability of a particular concept. Indicated the modification of the engine power to supply the natural gas generator with a dose of liquid biofuels. New technologies of extracting and using biofuels and alternative fuels are being introduced and developed for generating heat and electric energy. Studies on the use of gas and liquid alternative fuels are directly linked to research on the production of renewable and alternative energy as well as environment protection by minimizing emissions of toxic substances into the atmosphere.

Following the modern fuel market, one can notice that prices of liquid petroleum derivatives - petrol and diesel oil - which most often fuel piston internal combustion engines are increasingly higher. Similarly, the price of petroleum-derivative gas (LPG - the liquefied petroleum gas - simply speaking, a mixture of propane and butane) is also growing. Many academic and industrial institutions of science conduct research to determine whether it is possible to replace liquid petroleum-derivative fuels with some other potentially cheaper ones. It would also be beneficial if these new fuels were more "ecological" - so that their combustion products would not be harmful for the environment and if they were produced with the use of plants. Fuel stations commonly offer a fuel for diesel engines which is a mixture of fatty acids methyl esters (FAMEs) from vegetable oils, in Poland for instance from rape seeds. The paper presents a comparison of selected operating parameters of the Hatz 1B40 engine fuelled with mixtures of diesel oil or liquid bio-fuel and natural gas. Indicator diagrams, exhaust gases composition and vibration signals recorded on the engine body were analyzed. The study was conducted on the Hatz 1B40 diesel engine which is used among others in FOGO power generator sets, after replacing the original feeding system by common rail system for liquid fuels and after adding natural gas feeding system.

Combustion in a diesel engine is a complex physicochemical process, changing the time at which the events take place simultaneously heat and mass transfer and chemical reactions. The development of internal combustion engines goes towards meeting the increasingly stringent requirements for toxic exhaust emissions, reducing fuel consumption and therefore reduce carbon emissions and protect the Earth's natural resources. The problem to solve in modern combustion engines is the emission of NOx. One way to reduce the emission of toxic NOx combustion engine power is water-hydrocarbon emulsions [1]. Research combustion engines water-hydrocarbon emulsions has been its tradition. So far, attempts were carried out using an emulsion obtained by a chemical. Emulsions of oil and water can be obtained by adding various detergents to prevent delamination of the oil and water. In this article, we consider the possibility of applying a mixture of water and oil as an alternative fuel used to power internal combustion engines used in heavy road transport. This work is preliminary work, also having to check whether this is the future direction of the work. The measurements of emissions of exhaust gases and fuel consumption. After analysing the test results confirmed that the improvement of the economic and environmental performance of modern diesel engines, it can be achieved by supplying synthetic diesel or gas oil water emulsions. It was found that the use of emulsion leads to a reduction of fuel consumption and NOx emissions.

This paper presents a development of the known qualitative method for assessment of engine operation, applied to ship main diesel engine as an example. According to this interpretation engine operation can be presented as a physical quantity. In this aspect, based on the selected functional system of the engine, was assessed usefulness of the quantity for description reliability features of the system. To the analysis was applied Poisson's uniform process which made it possible to elaborate a model of run of worsening the considered system's operation taken as a random process of identical independent decreases of energy efficiency within a given time interval. The presented method is a valuable supplement for description reliability features of ship main engine what is important for realization of shipping tasks by sea. Additional advantage is versatility which makes that it can be applied to reliability analysis of any ship device or ship energy subsystem. Classification of the engine serviceability states with taking into account the assessment of its operation in energy-time aspect, schematic diagram of lubricating system of RTA48-TB engine and values of lubricating oil parameters in steady conditions for the engine load, graphical presentation of lubricating oil cooler operation graphical interpretation of the decreasing of oil cooler efficiency are presented in the paper

Opis:
The development of motorisation involves using bigger amounts of fuels. These fuels are, until now, mainly petroleum. However, the fuels of bio origin must be used as well. It follows from the necessity of ensuring CO2 balance and from the fact that oil sources sooner or later will become exploited. Not less important is the fact that, principally, it is difficult to change the proportions of petrol and diesel oil extracted from crude oil, and the use of diesel oil increases proportionally faster than petrol. Therefore, it is necessary to use bio additives in diesel oil. One of such additives is dense alcohols. The aim of the present work is to determine the energy balance of diesel engine powered by diesel oil and butanol mixture. The work field includes making of energy balance of the engine in its characteristic points responsive 13 phase ESC test as well as determining on this basis the consolidated values concerning the differences in the engine energy balance. It has been proved, that powering the engine by mineral diesel oil with doped butanol (20% v/v) does not lead to essential differences in the energy balance of the engine- which does not mean, that the essential differences are absent in the particular characteristic points of the engine. It requires more detailed explanation (in the further research works) because losses in the combustion process do not show differences, but in the other balance components the differences are shown.

Opis:
Indicating process of large combustion engines for both marine and industrial applications is performed using the indicating channels with valves. The impact of these channels on the values of parameters obtained from engine’s indication is significant. In previous studies, it had been shown that during exploitation accidental degradation of the indicating channels occurs. Carbon deposits, which appear in the channels, are limiting their patency. Leaks in channels connections are also appeared. Disregarded state of degradation of indicating channels will change the image of indicated pressure course, different for each cylinder of the engine. When cylinders are indicated using commercial instruments, the status of the channel is not in any way taken into account. At one gas compressing station in Poland, which has compressor diagnostic system, developed by the author, with stationary indicator, inverted IIR filter has been used. This filter is used to adjust the recorded waveforms of indicated pressure on motor-compressors GMVH type, and the filter coefficient is chosen to offset the associated throttling signal delay. Information about the delay of the signal is missing, however, in the case of popular portable indicators that do not use tags from crankshaft position. The paper presents a method for assessing the state of the indicating channel, based on the asymmetry measurement of compression course obtained after cut-off the fuel supply to the tested cylinder. The study model shows that leakage from the combustion chamber, interference in cooling and other defects cause only slight and predictable disruption of symmetry. The analysis of compression pressure course (without fuel delivery) immediately prior to each cylinder indication, in the case of positive verification, increases the reliability of diagnosis. In the case of negative verification, measure of the asymmetry could be the basis for the adjustment of acquired pressure waveforms and achieved from them parameters.

Indicating of large marine and industrial diesel engines is made with using indicating channels in cylinder head with valves. The impact of these channels on the value of the parameters obtained from indicating is significant. However, indicating is commonly used for comparative tests assuming that this error is the same on all cylinders of the same engine in identical conditions. As a result of operation especially in cylinders with irregular combustion process the coke occurs in the channel limits its patency. It causes changes in the image of indicated pressure. In such a situation defined parameters are subject of considerable random error. In the earlier studies on the engine Sulzer type 6AL20/24 cylinder channel failure was simulated and channel chocking symptom was observed as apparent TDC shift relative to a reference mark connected with the shaft. As part of ongoing studies attempt to reconstruct distorted pressure curve by chocked indicating channel was made. It is assumed that the channel with the valve is only connection between throttling element in the form of a channel with the much greater volume of the valve. Such a structure was modeled as IIR filter. For this type of filter, there is an unequivocal inverse transformation, which, at least in theory gives possibility to reconstruct the distorted pressure waveform. The reconstruction was carried out by selection of the filter coefficients so as to eliminate the shift of TDC. In practice it turned out that the reconstruction is not perfect. All obtained pressure waveforms are slightly noisy and distorted in the first phase of expansion. Despite this, there was a significant reduction in errors of some parameters determined from the reconstructed pressure waveform.

The aim of analysis presented in the article is results of measurements of torsional deflections of a crankshaft of three-cylinder internal combustion diesel engine. The wavelets of the run of torsional twists were processed by decomposition to harmonics using FFT. In order to exactly recognize all dynamic aspects of gas forces acting during working stroke, decomposition was done in two ways: first one relaying on records encompassing one working cycle (two revolutions), the second one based at separated periods encompassing angular an interval from TDC (Top Dead Centre) of one cylinder to TDC of subsequent in firing order. For three-cylinder engine, width of the interval is 240 degrees of crank angle. In order to obtain reliable results, torsional deflection signals acquisitions were recorded numerous times including changes of outer conditions (temperature, atmospheric pressure) and different values of the engine loads. The main goal of conducted experiments was looking for an answer of a question if exist any differences between frequency spectrums of harmonics of run of full cycle ( two revolutions) and the same cycle divided by three separate intervals. Analysis was conducted in order to state any possibility of diagnostic signals acquisition caused by abnormalities of combustion process. Results were presented in form of comparison of frequency spectra taken from full cycle and divided intervals.

Opis:
The article presents results of tests performed in a combustion research unit (CRU) with the two following fuels: light fuel oil (LFO) and glycerol. The CRU is a constant volume combustion chamber machine equipped with an injection system based on that used in common-rail diesel engines with electromagnetic injectors. This machine allows to compare various combustion properties between fuels for specified parameters of injection and a combustion chamber as well. As it is known glycerol is a substance which is obtained from several technological processes such as production of biofuel thus in this way it can be treated as an alternative renewable fuel. The glycerol is characterized by low heating value of 16MJ/kg and relatively high density of 1261 kg/m3. However, its heating value by volume is higher if compared to other liquid fuels. From that reason decrease in energy that can be delivered with fuel is smaller which is approximately 16% lest than for LFO. The parameters measured during this research were: pressure increase, rate of pressure increase (ROPR), ignition delay (ID), main reaction delay (MRD), main combustion period (MCP), end of main combustion (EMC), end of combustion (EC), position of max ROPR (PMR) and max ROPR. The tests were performed with different injection parameters such as injection pressure, injection duration and injection delay as well as under various conditions in the CRU combustion chamber expressed by pressure and temperature. On the basis of these tests the comparison between LFO and glycerol was done. The results were presented in diagrams. The research shows that glycerol used as a fuel, to obtain the same output power, should be injected at higher amounts. Glycerol as a fuel cannot ignite itself, hence to provide combustion the pilot injection of another fuel have to be applied.

Natural processes occurring on Earth (fires, volcanic eruptions) and human activity in the area of acquisition and processing of energy, is the cause of the continuous contaminating the atmosphere of combustion products. The combustion of fuels is and will be in the near future primary means of generating energy, including for transportation purposes. Transport is the cause of many environmental threats - emits dust and particles along with many of gaseous harmful substances and also noise and vibration. Power sources used for transport are almost exclusively equipped with internal combustion engines, among which is dominated by a diesel engines. In view of the known advantages of these motors such as high efficiency and relatively low emissions of toxic compounds in the exhaust gas, they have been accepted as the most preferred source of power motor vehicles in the coming decades, assuming that meet the requirements of future regulations regarding environmental protection. The problem to be solved in internal combustion engines is the emission of nitrogen oxides. In this paper are contained an overview of proven methods and results in the reduction of nitrogen oxides in exhaust gases by means of emulsion fuels, and forming an opinion concerning of the usefulness of such solutions in the future.

Opis:
The issues connected with the amount of lube oil in engine oil system are real problems in marine diesel engines maintenance process. The amount of lube oil in circulation influences its quality and consequently the wear of lubricated parts. That amount still changes and is connected with lubricating oil refilling strategy. The results of simulation carried out for SULZER 8S20U and PIELSTICK 12PC2-5V engines allowed to determine the influence of lubricating oil refilling strategy on the amount of lube oil in circulation. Frequent topping-up at regular intervals can be arranged to maintain the sump working capacity at the chosen percentage of the design maximum (for example 90 per cent), while a significantly delayed topping-up might allow the working capacity to be reduced to as low as about 50 per cent of the maximum. Thus a significantly reduced lubricant amount may have a disadvantageous influence on engine elements wear (i.e. piston rings, cylinder liners) and consequently cause the growth of the engine overhaul costs, although in far perspective, it would be difficult to connect that fact with the amount of oil in circulation. On the other hand in small output trunk piston engines without sump tanks, delayed topping-up and operation with minimum oil level could give some economic and ecological advantages resulting from reduced oil consumption. But in marine conditions (rolling and trim changes) it would be very hazardous for the engine safety operation.

The common demands for environmental protection in shipping are being recognized by IMO, through development of the rules with respect to SOx and NOx. This paper investigates the results of fuel injection variables, affecting cylinder process performance and exhaust gas emission. The effect of injection assembly design attributed on NO emission was estimated. The similar slow speed, large bore MAN B&W engines performance were compared. The main factors used for evaluation were: fuel consumption, rotational speed, mean and maximum in-cylinder pressures and total concentrations of NOx, CO2, O2i CO, and HC. The engines performance and NO emission were compared with conventional 6S60MC-C and latest — electronically controlled 7S60ME-C. The CFD simulation of combustion and pollutant formation was created to represent processes of a marine large bore engine. The SMC-C engine operation and standard injection nozzle design was taken as a baseline for comparison with measured NO concentration. The predicted cylinder pressures showed reasonable agreement with experimental measurements. The predictive ability of used CFD simulation package was found to be quantitatively insufficient in terms of NOx emission. However, the predicted NO emission exhibits similar sensitivity with experiment results. The quantitative set of reference data for the validation of simulation results needs to be substantially improved. The determination offuel injection and cylinder pressure history can be identified as the most important source of inaccuracy. Finally, weighted NOx specific emission factor for both engines shows close value, sufficiently placed against IMO limit presented in Fig. 11. The results are promising and show that controlled combustion process is capable of fulfilling present and future NOx emission requirements. Modern marine engines are designed with adjustable components to allow the engine to be adjusted for maximum efficiency or NOx weighted emission factor when used in particular application.

The paper is focusing on combustion characteristics for small diesel engine by using emulsified blend fuels of vegetable oil and light oil. Target is to achieve low emissions and low fuel consumption for internal combustion engines. The fuels used in this study are light oil, blend fuels [light oil + coconut oil, light oil + palm oil], and emulsified fuels [light oil + water, blend fuels + water]. Mean increasing rate of pressure is calculated from the value which subtracted initial pressure from maximum burning pressure divided by total burning time. The mean increasing ratio of pressure is calculated from the value which subtracted initial pressure from maximum burning pressure divided by the total burning time. The emissions in exhaust gas are measured with an analyzer of exhaust gas. The data of 30 tests for each engine revolutions were averaged arithmetically. Experimental approach and results have been presented by details. The main conclusions are as follows: it is possible to control the combustion behaviour by using blend fuels and emulsified blend fuels for small diesel engine; the maximum burning pressure of emulsified blend fuels increases at low engine speed; the CO emission of blend fuels is smaller than that of light oil; the NOX emission of emulsified coconut blend fuel and emulsified palm blend fuel is smaller than that of light oil; the CO emission of emulsified Coconut-Palm blend fuel is equal to that of light oil at low engine speed.

The following paper introduces us to possibility of using visualization to present running point of main marine diesel engine during ship operation. Construction development of ship marine diesel engine going towards more and more power results in large mechanical and thermal load. So ship marine diesel engines of new generation are more susceptible to damage caused by overloading than the ones of older generation. For this reason more and more attention is paid to proper operation of these main marine engines understood as the way of choosing the right parameters resulting in adequate point of engine operation. This kind of exploitation is being reflected in more and more rigorous requirements imposed by ship engine producers concerning the conditions of their exploitation. This paper presents measured parameters during engine operation and of the sometime confirming its current performance. Special attention has been paid to the measurement of torque. Measurement of torque and revolution speed of the main marine diesel engine have been linked with the possibility of visual presentation of running point of the engine. By means of research carried out of HCP Engine Test Bed it was possible to prove effectiveness of succession of measurement instruments and torque meter action. Visualization algorithm which can be used to present field of work and running point of the engine has also been tested.

Flammability limits and flame speeds of dilute-lean fuel mixtures of hydrogen (H2) and acetylem premixed with oxygen (02) and nitrogen (N2) were examined with a detailed kinetics model. These mixtures are used in a preburn in a constant volume combustion vessel to create elevated temperatures and pressures with gas compositions that represent the thermodynamic state in a diesel engine combustion chamber at fuel injection and auto ignition. A mixture of hydrogen and acetylene with combined atomic hydrogen to carbon ratio (HCR) of 1.85 was used to match that of typical diesel fuel and results are shown in comparison to a previously used mixture with a HCR of 1.17. The lower flammability limit (LFL) of the HCR 1.85 fuel mixture was found at an equivalence ratio of 0.235, while flame speed and adiabatic combustion temperatures were also predicted for post preburn product oxygen levels between O and 21 percent. Flame speeds were shown to decrease with a reduction in oxygen concentration, an increase in nitrogen dilution, while combustion temperatures increased over most of this range. Trends for this relation of flame speed and temperature are presented and a new premixed fuel mixture with an HCR of 1.85 is proposed.

The paper presents a test of a self-ignition engine equipped with high-pressure fuel-dosing system based on injection units with electronic control system. The engine was fuelled with conventional fuel and few kinds of non-converted vegetable oil. The analysis of the experiment results correlated with knowledge of their properties shows the important conclusions about possibilities, disadvantages and perspectives of the fuels usage in contemporary engines equipped with electronic control fuel-dosing system. The vegetable oils have a special place in history of automotive industry. In 1900 a great event on Word Trades in Paris was compression-ignition engine fuelled by groundnuts oil — a masterpiece of no one else like Rudolf Diesel. R. Diesel, aware of conventional fuels limitation, patented in 1892 a vegetable oil as a fuel. The NOx concentration in exhaust was measuredfor maximum engine speed (1900 rpm). The lowest emission ofmeasured compounds was observed in case of sunflower oil and rape oil "Biedronka" (65% and 75% of emission during engine work fuelled by conventional diesel oil). The highest values were detected for post frying palm oil and rape oil "Aldi" (120% of emission during engine work fuelled by conventional diesel oil).

Opis:
The pursuit of reduced greenhouse gas emissions, as well as the increased share of renewable fuels in the overall energy balance has led to a search for alternative energy sources. One of the fuels on which great hopes are set as fuel for engines is biomethane or biogas, whose main component is methane. Biogas can be obtained from different products by using different technologies, so that it has potential as a widelyavailable fuel, which is quite easy to produce. The percentage of methane in biogas depends on the technology for obtaining biogas and ranges from 35% to around 75%. The largest biogas sources can be animal farms, where it is obtained from animal excrement. Another source is sewage treatment plants and rubbish dumps, where substantial quantities of biogas are obtained as a result of natural processes occurring in waste dumping sites or sewage. Biogas can also be acquired from waste obtained from fruit and vegetable processing as well as waste from meat plants. This paper examines the possibility of using biogas as a fuel for diesel engines. In these engines, the combustion of biogas (methane) requires the application of a dual-fuel supply system in which liquid fuel initiating gas fuel selfignition will be injected into the combustion chamber along with methane. The paper also contains example results showing the effect of the methane dose on the course of the combustion process in diesel engines.

The paper provides the results of an integrated research of the energy, environmental performance and traction indicators and the characteristics of fuel feed and performance of A41, 2F511, VALMET 320 DMG and Audi 1Z highspeed, direct-injection diesel engines when converting their operation from mineral diesel D to the fatty acid esters (RRME and RRBE) and alcohol biodiesel mixtures. The researches are carried out in cooperation of the Lithuanian and Polish partners within the framework of joint scientific projects under EUREKA international scientific program „E!4018 CAMELINA-BIOFUEL”. In the light of the new EU initiatives („White Paper” 2011), 30% optimum part of RRME bio-component in the mixture with D (B30) is validated for practical use. The characteristics of fuel supply and heat generation in a diesel cylinder are under investigation; an explanation of a significant reduction in the harmful component emission (EG) and 2 to 4% increase in the fuel efficiency in case of use of B30 and B10 biodiesels is offered. The presence of the ethanol alcohol component 9E) in D-RME-E and RME-E biofuel mixtures resulted in reduction of CO and NOx emission by 10 to 12% and EG smokiness - by 20% per each 10% increase of E part. The indicated efficiency of performance was increased by 2-2.5%. The indicators of cyclic instability did not exceed the corresponding indicators in diesel operation on D. It is established that the motor properties of tested B30 and B50 biofuels based on butanol and rapeseed oil butyl ester RBE are similar to RME biodiesels and have important advantages over them: the complete solubility of alcohol component and the possibility of B30 (D-RBE) use at ambient temperature up to -30 centigrade. The motor characteristics of the second-generation biodiesels produced from the non-food raw material (Camelina Sativa oil methyl esters) are highly competitive with and even exceed by separate indicators the similar indicators of certified RME biodiesels. It is demonstrated that the conversion of diesels, including the automobile diesels with EGR electronic system, to operation on D-RRME (RME, CSME) biodiesels does not require the change of regulation characteristics of the fuel-feed system. The test of the oxidation stability of D-RME and D-CSME biodiesels performed under operating conditions on S. Lebedevas, G. Lebedeva, J. Žaglinskis VALMET 320 DMG marine diesel proved the stability of the motor, energy, and environmental performance indicators for 7-8 months' biodiesel storage without the addition of antioxidant and for 13-14 months' storage - with the addition of Ionol BS200 antioxidant.

Continuous monitoring of diesel engine performance under its operating is critical for prediction of malfunction development and subsequently functional failure detection. Analysis of Instantaneous angular Speed (IAS) of the crankshaft is considered as one of non-intrusive and effective method of detection of combustion quality deterioration. The paper contains presentation of attempt of monitoring of piston engine’s crankshaft torsional vibrations by measurement of Instantaneous Angular Speed at free and power output ends of the engine. It is assumed that calculation of differential value of angular distance run between both ends in the same time shall give the picture of torsion angle magnitudes and phases of the peak values. Fir carrying out such measurements, high frequency of sampling was required. The angular speed measurements is to be done utilising two optical sensors for reading and two perforated discs mounted at shaft’s ends playing the role of speed signal emitters. In the paper is presented description of the measurement system and explanation of its mode of work. It is also shown analysis of measurement accuracy, way errors elimination and method of signals runs filtration. Presented results of experiment derives from test cycle carried out using laboratory stand of Gdynia Maritime University equipped with 3- cylinder self - ignition engine, powering electric generator.

The paper presents results of the experiment focused on evaluation of records of runs of the engine in good condition as a reference for subsequent detection of faults of fuel system of medium speed diesel engine. The aim of research was determination of limits of instantaneous angular speed's spread spotted between random starts of the engine, without any fault condition simulation. Due to fine variation of the load setup and different ambient condition, every record of angular speed of independent starting, despite of attempts to sustain the same load and rotational speed value, presents some deviations between runs. Having on mind utilization of such measurement as a template for further comparison, is crucial to find out how random changes of ambient conditions and accuracy of revolutionary speed setup affect the IAS magnitude course. The answer was got in way of registration of numerous runs of the test engine after independent starts and hand adjustment of required RPM’s. The experiment was carried out at laboratory stand in GdyniaMaritimeUniversity, equipped with diesel engine Sulzer 3AL 25/30 driving electrogenerator. Sulzer 3AL 25/30 is three cylinder, medium speed, four stroke marine diesel engine, with maximum output 400 kW at 750 rpm. This paper presents the results of comparative research on basic physical and chemical properties of pure diesel fuel and two types’ mixtures of Camelina oil ester (Camelina oil ester content of the mixture was 10% and 15%) and diesel fuel. Application of these mixtures has different physicochemical properties to power supply diesel engine, made it possible to detect existing differences in the injection process (pumping and spraying). The analysis of the injection process has been defined through experimental graphs of the fuel pressure in injection line and registered height of the needle injector. With the knowledge of these two fast-changing engine parameters and loadvelocity conditions, there were calculated: fuel flow speed from nozzle, range and fuel spray disintegration time and the average critical diameter of the droplets. In the final part of the article it was shown, that the fuel with different physicochemical properties has a significant impact on the injection process. There were also made a comparative assessment of the suitability test compounds for use in service.

Increased weight and greater requirements, regarding manoeuvring opportunities need extension of the power of combustion engines determining their powertrain units. In case of the family "W" engines, following developmental versions came into existence as a result of the modernization of the earlier version, among others thru the optimization of the combustion process, applying of the supercharging, as well as strengthening of the internal construction, which made it possible to carry greater thermal and mechanical loads. The subjects of the study were pistons made from composite materials of the small hysteresis of the alloy mounted on the S12-U combustion engine. In the novel construction of the piston, the outline of the overcoat was modified, the shape of the combustion chamber, the hole for the piston pin, grooves for the piston rings and shape of internal surfaces remained unchanged. A characteristic feature of the novel piston is the smaller hysteresis of the coefficient of thermal expansion composite alloy, alfa of which the pistons were made, whereas a so-called hysteresis is the difference of the coefficient alfa, which occurs during warming and piston cooling, and takes place during working of the piston in the combustion engine. The smaller hysteresis of the coefficient alfa makes the decreasing clearances between piston and cylinder possible, what has a beneficial influence on work parameters of the combustion engine, especially under conditions of partial loading of the engine. Basic parameters of the engine for the maximum torque characteristics and load characteristics are the object of the paper.

Article describes the operation issues of contemporary injection systems of Diesel engines. Common-rail system has been used since 1997, and since then there has been a significant evolution in its construction. In this aspect, there are changes in generations of high-pressure injection pumps and fuel injectors as well as methods of steering them, but exploitation problems are the same. The most prone to malfunction elements of the system are the fuel injectors. Their task is to distribute and to spray of the fuel in the combustion chamber of engine. Common Rail fuel injectors generate few injection dosages in the one work cycle. The rate of injection is depended on the design of the steering valve. One very important parameter of fuel injector is fuel injection delay time. If the time from control start of fuel injector to begin injection is shorter then it causes generation of greater number of injection dosages. Pollutants in fuel in the form of various amorphous solids of the size an even few microns cause the decrease of operating parameters of injector, which adversely affects the operation of the engine. Article shows contemporary fuel injectors, the methods of their examination, the types of fuel pollutants and their impact on fuel injector work.

The results of investigation of 1,9 TDI engine (285 Nm, 85 kW, type AJM without any modification) equipped with injection units supplied conventional diesel fuel (ON) or B100 fuel (RME) have been presented in article. Investigations have been realized at the engine speed of 2000 rpm and variable load within the range of 0 to 275 Nm. The pressure, temperature and heat release velocity runs have been subjected to analysis. Particular attention has been paid to the release of the heat used for the effective work and internal energy increase of the working medium (enthalpy) during combustion inside the engine cylinder versus the crank angle for both investigated fuels. It was found among the others that mentioned fuels differ in the heat release, heat velocity and the maximal combustion temperature, which for the B100 fuel is bigger than for the conventional diesel fuel. Bigger combustion dynamics of tested biofuel (compared with standard diesel fuel) results higher concentrations of Nitrogen Oxides NOx in exhaust gases. The easiest way is of course the use of the later start of fuel injection biofuels and/or increase the exhaust gas recirculation EGR. These treatments, however, result in a worsening of the energy performance of the engine. It was concluded also that the combustion of RME works properly at higher engine loads. Then reduce the negative difference between the combustion of biofuel (RME) and standard Diesel fuel.

The article describes processing method of a signal, coming from torsional deflections of an internal combustion piston engine’s crankshaft, registered using two optical encoders ETNP-10. Standard measurement and recording set ETNP-10 enables recording of Instantaneous Angular Speed values encompassing 10 revolutions of the crankshaft, what is equal to 5 cycles of four-stroke engine. That time duration is sufficient for analysis of changes of angular speed caused by, for example, malfunction of fuel injection valve, but is insufficient in case of observation characterized by low frequency changes with period of fluctuations, lower than 0.8 sec. Short time for recording makes impossible following of instantaneous angular speed deviations caused by magnitude modulation of engine’s load value. In the article is presented an algorithm written in MATLAB environment, which allows processing of the data recorded using the recorder DAS 1600 Sefram. The recorded this way signals have around 26 seconds' duration of engine work. Data acquired from two encoders mounted at opposite sides of the shaft, in form of square magnitude signals are transformed into instantaneous speed and subsequently to instantaneous angular shift, what is basis for torsions calculation. In the article is also presented method of elimination of systematic error due to assumed method of averaging. Finally, some examples of results of torsional deflection measurement and analysis are presented.

Opis:
Application of active coating inside of an self-ignition engine may have an important impact on several stages of combustion process: fuel cracking, fore-flame phase, combustion phase and secondary combustion phase [7]. Investigations of such construction are very rare in the literature - especially of hydrocarbons emission. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are known to have mutagenic and carcinogenic effect on humans [2, 6, 7]. One of the most important anthropogenic sources of these substances is motorization (especially diesel engines). The paper presents results of measurements of PAHs emissions from SB3.1 self-ignition engine with Pt active coating application inside. The catalyst was applied on engine valves surface. Zirconium ceramic was chosen as a coating for catalyst application (also because of its thermo-insulating properties). Because of unstable parameters of self-ignition engine work (pressure and temperature jumps), PAHs were extracted from two phases: gas phase and solid phase (particle matter - PM). A chromatographic method of PAHs identification and analysis, because of their low level of concentration in exhaust gases, needed to be supported by sample purification and enrichment stages [40]. It has been found that a significant decrease of total toxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons concentration in engine exhaust gases for engine with Pt catalyst application. The catalyst application causes also changes in relative concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Transport is a major source of the particle pollution (PM). Combustion engine particulate emissions have the potential cause adverse health effects. These effects include cancer and other pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases. A substantial proportion of the number of particles, but not the mass, is ultrafine. For example – one million particles of 100 nanometers size with a unit density of 1 g/cm3 have a mass of approximately 0.0005 g. The paper includes research results of mass and number concentration of nanoPM for 1.9 TDI VW exhaust gases fuelled by standard diesel. The measurements were performed for ambient air and 3 different point of engine work (idle speed, low and high load at 2000 rpm). For nanoPM measurements was used Electrical Low Pressure Impactor ELPI from DECATI, was found, among other things, that the biggest mass concentration was at 0.1-10 μm of PM diameter but the biggest number concentration was at 0,01 – 0,1 μm and thus for the size of solid particles of at least an order of magnitude smaller than the mass concentration. The biggest the negative differences in the mass concentration occur in the exhaust gases of the RME fuelled engine (in comparison with diesel fuel) at engine idling when the smallest injection pressure and temperature inside the engine cylinder exist and the oxygen availability is also the lowest (because of the small charging pressure and high EGR rate). Such measurements are important not only in terms of utilitarian but also in cognitive sense – for determining the effect of the engine construction parameters and/or regulating the engine (or the fuel composition) on the mass and the number of nanoparticles emitted in the exhaust gases.

In practical diesel engines it is to achieve a low emission and low fuel consumption under from low to high load operation conditions. Several techniques were developed for the low emission and high efficiency, such as Homogeneous Charge Compression-Ignition Engines and the blend fuels. Nevertheless, there are only few data available for reducing the emissions and fuel consumption of small diesel engines by using blend fuels. This experiment has been carried out to examine the influence of alcohol blend fuels on combustion characteristics for small diesel engine. The fuels used in this study are light oil (Standard), ethanol, propanol and butanol. The combustion behaviours, such as the emissions in exhaust gas (NOX, CO, CO2, O2 concentration), fuel consumption rate are observed. The main conclusions are as follows: 1) it is possible to control the combustion behaviour by using alcohol blend fuels for small diesel engine, 2) the fuel consumption of at any alcohol blend fuels is bigger than that of light oil, 3) the net thermal efficiency of some alcohol blend fuels (E5P5, P5B5, E5B5) slightly increases than that of light oil, 4) the NOx emissions for all the alcohol blend fuels are smaller than that of light oil, 5) the CO emissions are remarkably bigger than that of light oil under from low to middle engine load without the ethanol 10% addition.

Opis:
Biodiesel is one of biodegradable and renewable fuel, which is originated from vegetable oil or animal fats. Different fuel properties of biodiesel produce different combustion characteristics which slightly differ to mineral diesel. Combustion studies on palm-biodiesel and mineral diesel were conducted using a multi-cylinder diesel engine operating at medium engine load at 2500 rpm. The engine was water cooled inline four cylinder diesel engines without exhaust gas recirculation system. Cycle-to-cycle variations of peak cylinder pressure and mean indicated pressure of the test fuels were determined for the combustion characteristics of diesel engine. In-cylinder pressure data for the 200 consecutive cycles were determined using a Kistler pressure transducer and recorded into a combustion analyser. Three different engine loads: 20%, 40% and 60% were selected in this study with a constant engine speed of 2500 rpm. The results show that at lower load, in-cylinder pressure variations for palm biodiesel were lower compared to mineral diesel. However, at medium and high loads, palm biodiesel has dominated the peak cylinder variations. Different combustion cyclic variations for mineral diesel and B100 are observed and generally influenced by psychochemical properties differences including viscosity and density of fuel.

The paper presents possibility of applying the theory of semi-Markov processes for probabilistic description of load spectrum for diesel engines employed for ship propulsion, so for main engines. The considerations include output power characteristics for this kind of engines. The characteristics have enabled formulating a four-member set of states of the process of load on the engines. The theory of semi-Markov processes has been applied for describing the real process of loads on the mentioned engines. This theory has made possible building a model of the engine loads in form of a continuous-time semi-Markov process with a four-state set of values. Properties of a Darboux continuous function, which allow considering the engine loads as the discrete-states and continuous-time processes, have been used to build the model. In consequence a limiting distribution of the occurring process of successive states of engine loads could be determined. The distribution is the probabilities of staying a sea-going ship main engine in successive states of load. The distribution is characterized by the spectrum of loads on this kind of engines. The presented model can be developed by taking into account many states of the process of main engines loading as the need is to make such a probabilistic description of the process that provides possibility of rational control of the operating process.

The article presents bench test results of a four-stroke, four-cylinder, naturally aspirated, DI diesel engine operating with neat JP-8 fuel (J) and its blends with Diesel fuel (D) in following proportions by volume: 90/10 (J+10D), 70/30 (J+D30), 50/ 50 (J+D50), 30/70 (J+D70), and 100% diesel fuel (DF). The purpose of the research was to analyse and compare changes occurred in the autoignition delay, combustion events, engine performance efficiency, emissions, and smoke of the exhaust when running on JP-8 fuel, jet-diesel fuel blends, and diesel fuel at a full (100%) engine load and speed of 1400 min–1 at which maximum torque occurs and rated speed of 2200 min–1. It was found that the start of injection (SOI) and the start of combustion (SOC) occurred earlier in an engine cycle and the autoignition delay decreased by 9.0% and 12.7% due to replacement of aviation JP-8 fuel with diesel fuel at a full load and the latter speeds. Maximum in-cylinder pressure was 6.8% and 4.0% higher when operating with diesel fuel, whereas brake thermal efficiency was 3.3% and 7.7% higher, and brake specific fuel consumption 2.8% and 7.0% lower when using fuel blend J+D50 compared with the respective values measured with neat JP-8 fuel. Emissions of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) were 13.3% and 13.1% higher from a straight diesel running at speed of 1400 min–1, and 19.0% and 19.5% higher at a higher speed of 2200 min–1. The carbon monoxide (CO) emissions and total unburned hydrocarbons (HC) decreased 2.1 times and by 12.3% when running with fuel blend J+D70 at speed of 2200 min–1 compared with those values measured with jet fuel. Smoke of the exhaust was 53.1% and 1.9% higher when using fuel blend J+D10 than that of 46.9% and 70.0% measured with jet fuel at speeds of 1400 and 2200 min–1. The engine produced 34.5% more smoke from combustion of fuel blend J+D70 at the low speed of 1400 min–1, but smoke converted to be 11.3% lower when operating at a higher speed of 2200 min–1.

The paper presents the requirements to be met by diesel engines and their components, in particular pistons for engines of military vehicles. These requirements are related to the mass of modern military vehicles, which has greatly increased. Materials for the piston should have a good strength properties and low hysteresis of thermal expansion coefficient α across the range of operating temperatures, good resistance to galling, low abrasion, low coefficient of friction and good functional properties. On the clearance of the piston in the cylinder, the coefficient of thermal expansion α and its hysteresis has a decisive influence. The paper includes information on the piston working clearances, the requirements for pistons materials, their chemical composition, standard materials for the forged pistons, for the cast pistons (silumin alloys) and for the composite pistons. The paper presents the changes in coefficient of thermal expansion for the alloy in the raw state and after heat treatment and pistons made of new composite material prior to motor testing and after these tests. The completed new pistons have a lower coefficient of thermal expansion and lower hysteresis α, which allows reducing the running piston and cylinder clearances with the resulting effects.

It is assumed that elements of Exhaust Gases Cleaning Systems creates additional resistance along fumes duct and can affect energetic process of combustion. In the paper are presented results of researches aimed on detection and recognition of dumping effect in the exhaust pipeline using devices dedicated for engine’s torque and angular speed measurement. The experiment was carried out in test stand of Gdynia Maritime University; equipped with one-cylinder, low speed engine working in two-stroke mode. Effect of increasing of gas flow resistance was achieved by installation of shutters in cross-section of exhaust pipe. The shutters diminished active flow „window“ for 50% of normal crossection area of the exhaust pipe The plan of measurements encompasses registration of Instantaneous Angular Speed of the engine’s shaft and parallel registration of Instantaneous Value of Shaft Torsion, what reflect fluctuation of torque. Value of angular speed and toque enables exact calculation of power produced by the engine. Experiment included measurements at different levels of engine’s load and with changes of mean rotational speed. Angular speed and shaft’s torsion were measured and recorded using system ETNP-10 which is based on optical sensor and set of toothed discs. That method gives high accuracy of angular speed and torsion measurement. Results of experiment are presented as difference of related curves of values’ variations of angular speed and torsion occurring at the propulsion shaft connecting the engine and the water brake.

The manuscript presents the analysis of influence of fuel spray angle on NOx fraction in the exhaust gas emitted from marine 4-stroke diesel engine. Analysis is based on computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model designed because of the motion mesh of combustion chamber of the marine engine cylinder and air inlet and exhaust gas ducts. Presented model consists of models of fuel injection into combustion chamber, breaking-up and evaporation of the fuel, mixing with air and turbulent combustion with heat transfer to construction elements of the engine cylinder. Mentioned CFD model is validated according to boundary and initial conditions taken from direct measurements. The chosen research object is laboratory 4-stroke turbocharged Diesel engine with direct injection of the fuel and mechanically controlled of both cylinder valves and the injector. The conclusion from the analysis is that the increase of fuel spray angle causes the increase of maximum speed of kinetic phase of the combustion and the decrease of maximum speed of diffusion phase of the combustion. The effect of this is the increase of maximum combustion pressure and the decrease of maximum combustion temperature. The result of presented changes in combustion process is the increase of NOx fraction in the exhaust gas. It should be noted that extended increase of the fuel spray angle cause close-up the fuel spray to the cylinder heads wall and the decrease of NOx fraction in the exhaust gas.

Checking and tuning of the fuel injection valves opening pressures, fuel valves timing and exhaust or inlet valves clearances is a common practice in high-speed marine diesel engines maintenance. Cost lowering tendency in engine maintenance schedules and unmanned vessel's propulsion plants need new approach to these old and reliable procedures. Conventional maintenance methods for engine valve gear mechanism depend on valve clearances checks between valve stem and rocker arm and valve timing diagram checks on crankshaft flywheel. But how to observe valves' timing diagram on working engine and what is the difference between static and dynamic valves timing diagram and in the end how engine load and speed changes disturb observed parameters? Answers for these and other questions for high-speed marine diesel engines MB820 type are given in this paper. Dynamic valve gear timing diagrams are indispensable to perform an accurate engine tuning. A new original diagnostic and tuning method for high-speed marine diesel engine MB820 is presented in the paper. In the principle this method based on measurements of: internal cylinder pressure curves and on vibration signals. Typical diagnostic methods which based on vibration signals analysis are sensitive to engine load and speed changes. Researches presented in this paper were focused on the possibilities and differences of the dynamic timing diagram assessing at engine rated load and when idling.

The main aim of the above mentioned research was to show the influence of the fuels on the change of self-ignition delay angle for different rotational velocity conditions of the engine and for maximum volumetric dose of ignited fuel. The research was performed using a dynamometer test stand equipped with measurement system of fast-changeable needle lift of injector and the pressures of working substance. Before starting the investigations, selected physicochemical properties of researched fuels were determined that significantly influence that parameter of the combustion process. At the end of the article the conclusion of experiments and simulations results referring to selfignition delay angle are analysed.

Operation of ship propulsion system is associated with realization of definite operational goals. If to elements of the system the operational reliability strategy could be applied, the situation would be very simple as existing conditions would unambiguously determine application of means being on hand. However decision to reject application of the strategy (even if hypothetical) becomes obvious with a view of necessity of ensuring an acceptable level of safety to ship and environment as well as presence of associated formal and legal limitations. Therefore complexity of operational reality makes that means intended for operation may be used in various ways. Objectivity and rationality in making decision, assumed optimal in given conditions, forces to apply an evaluating (quantitative) approach to the problem, hence to search for such their parameters (indices) which, in a given decision situation, can be deemed most adequate. To precisely determine the task it is necessary to specify also its duration time, apart from conditions in which it will be realized. When considering propulsion engine, i.e. the main element of ship propulsion system, especially important becomes not only the problem which amount of energy could be at one's disposal but also within which time interval it could be delivered. Therefore apart from applying the commonly used reliability indices, it seems sensible to consider the operation in such evaluating approach as it could be determined by energy and time simultaneously.

The paper presents results of the calculation, based on simplified engine model, aimed on prediction of IAS (Instantaneous Angular Speed) of the crankshaft fluctuations under faulty engine condition. Gas forces were calculated basing on results of in-cylinder pressure measurements which were used as inputs to the dynamic model. Mass forces were calculated basing on technical particulars of the engine Sulzer 3Al 25/30.Measurements of the incylinder pressure was carried out at laboratory stand in Gdynia Maritime University, equipped with diesel engine Sulzer 3AL 25/30 driving electro-generator. Sulzer 3AL 25/30 is three cylinder, medium speed, four stroke marine diesel engine, with maximum output 408 kW at 750 rpm. In order to evaluate of IAS model utility for diagnostic prediction of the engine behavior, two kinds of malfunctions of engine’s fuel system were simulated. First malfunction was fuel leakage from high pressure line; the second was partly plugged injector’s nozzle. Construction of high pressure fuel pump enable to fuel leakage simulation. The engine was run out at load 250 kW what is around 65% of nominal. Results of all measurement were smoothed in order to eliminate a noise using SG (Savitzky – Golay) filter. Results of fault condition modeling were compared with healthy engine model and with results of in -cylinder pressure diagrams, in order to create a map of deviations from normal condition.

At rated 2200 min–1 speed, the use of treated jet fuel leads to smoother engine performance under all loads and the maximum cylinder pressure gradient lowers by 9.4% as against that 15.9 bar/deg of base diesel. The minimum brake specific fuel consumption (bsfc) for F-34 and treated F-34 fuels decreases by 4.8% and 3.5% at 1400 min–1 speed and increases by 2.7% and 3.7% at 2200 min–1 speed compared to 249.5 g/kWh and 251.8 g/kWh values of base diesel. Maximum NO emissions produced from fuels JF and JF+0.12vol% decrease by 11.5% and 7.0% at 1400 min–1, and 17.1% and 17.3% at 2200 min–1 speed compared to 1705 ppm and 1389 ppm emanating from the normal diesel. Maximum CO emissions produced from jet fuel JF and JF+0.12vol% decrease by 39.3% and 16.8% compared to that 4988 ppm produced from base diesel running at 1400 min–1 speed. At 2200 min-1 speed, the ecological effect of using fuel F-34 fuel decreases and the CO sustains over the whole load range at the same level and increases by 2.5% and 3.0% with regard to the normal diesel operating under high load. The HC emission also is lower by 78.3% and 58.8% for low and high loads compared to 230 ppm and 1820 ppm of the normal diesel running at 1400 min–1 speed. The smoke opacity ,generated from fuels JF and JF+0.12vol% sustains at lower levels over the all load range with the maximum values decreased by 14.6% and 8.1% with regard to 94.9% of the normal diesel operating at 1400 min–1 speed. The test results show that military F-34 fuel is a cleaner-burning replacement of diesel fuel and suggests fuel economy with reduced all harmful species, including NO, NO2, NOx, CO, HC, and smoke opacity of the exhausts.

The paper presents the results of lubricating properties tests of Titan Truck Plus 15W40 motor oil. Tested oil was used in Caterpillar 3512B high-speed engines, which propelled the tug boat. The lubricating properties parameters were determined for fresh oil and used oil samples. Builder of Caterpillar 3512B engine recommends lubricating oil change after every 1000 hours of operation. Lubricating oil samples were taken from engine oil system after 342 hours of service and after 1024 hours of service, it means just before lubricating oil change. The test results were collected by means of a four-ball extreme pressure tester T-02 according to Polish Norm PN-76/C-04147. The following lubricating properties parameters were determined: weld load Pz, maximum nonseizure load Pn, seizure load Pt and load wear index Ih. Investigations showed that for used oil samples maximum nonseizure load and seizure load increase but weld load and load wear index decrease. These results indicate that used oil has higher boundary layer resistance (better antiwear properties) but worse antiseizure properties, which are determined in hard working conditions of the sliding node elements. In author’s opinion, worsening of the antiseizure properties results of solid impurities presence, which come from lubricating oil deterioration process. To verify that thesis the detail analysis of the tested oils chemical content has been made. Spectrol Q100 spectrometer, which can specify content of 24 chemical elements in the lubricating oils was used for this purpose.

The paper presents the results of research of the influence of clogged injector nozzles in fuel injection system on the shape of heat release characteristics. The study was conducted on a laboratory four-stroke marine engine, type Sulzer 3Al 25/30, with nominal power Ne = 408 kW at nominal rotational speed n = 750 rpm. The study was carried out according to active experiment plan, during which the engine failure of the injection system was simulated. Simulation of loss of patency of injector nozzles (clogged) was to completely clog two holes of nine injection injector nozzle holes with a diameter of 0,325 mm. Measurements were made at a constant engine speed of 750 rev/min for five loads: 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 kW. Measurements of pressure of combustion were performed by means of tensometric sensors of Spice Company. Based on measured pressure curves heat release characteristics were determined. The algorithm allows the determination of net heat release rate q and the net generated heat Q characteristics. Based on the obtained results it can be concluded that significant improvement in the diagnostic use of indicator diagrams can be obtained by using heat release characteristics. These characteristics are correlated with the process of fuel injection and the injection pump operation. As demonstrated in the work of analysing the heat release rate q, it is possible to infer diagnosis on the technical condition of the fuel injection system.

Opis:
The need to limit greenhouse gases emissions and to increase the share of renewable fuels in the general energy balance forces people to look for new alternative energy sources. Methane or biogas, in which methane is the main combustible component, is one of such fuels, which is believed to be a promising diesel engine fuel. It is worth emphasizing that biogas might be believed to be one of the cleanest fuels due to the fact that it can be produced from waste, which in normal conditions decomposes releasing methane into the atmosphere. Methane (biogas) combustion in diesel engines requires a dual-fuel feed system, in which the liquid fuel initiating auto-ignition will be injected into the combustion chamber. It comes as a consequence of a relatively high spontaneous combustion temperature of methane, which is not able to self-ignite in the chamber without an external source of ignition. This article presents a concept of constructing an integrated laboratory control system, which will provide optimal feed control of complex composition gaseous fuel and of the injection of an appropriate pilot dose of a liquid fuel into the combustion chamber. The solution proposed to control a dual-fuel diesel engine, which was mounted on the test bed, enables performing comprehensive diesel engine research, ensuring not only stable working conditions for the engine, but also granting an opportunity to smoothly regulate the composition of the artificial biogas which feeds the engine and to control basic parameters of the liquid fuel pilot dose.

In the present paper the results of investigations into the degradation mechanizm of thermal barrier coating (TBC) applied in spark ignited and naturally aspirated diesel engines are presented. The TBC comprised 0.09 mm thick NiCrAlY bond coat and 0.36 mm thick Al2O3-40%TiO2 top coat. The coating was atmospheric plasma sprayed on piston heads, inlet and outlet valves and engine head. Top coating was heavily damaged in thermal fatigue tests and in exploitation test on spark ignited engine. The mechanism of damage was spalling of the outermost layer of ceramics. Porosity of the ceramic coating increased significantly which made the coating permeable to the products of combustion and thus facilitated corrosion attack on bond layer. Spalling of coating did not increase wear of piston rings and sleeves. X-ray diffraction studies proved high phase stability ofAl2O3-40%TiO2 top coat. Al2Or40%TiO2 APS sprayed coating cannot be considered the alternative top coat to currently used ZrO2-8%Y2O3in engine applications. Thermal barrier coating based on Al2O3-40%TiO2 can not be used for adiabatization of diesel or spark ignited engines. Al2O3-40%TiO2 based TBC can be used in less demanding applications.

The practical design of the marine engine multi in-cylinder pressure acquisition system has been presented. The system operational properties and measurement methodology is aimed the online marine diesel engine applications. The design of engine combustion pressure recording system is based on piezoelectric sensors set that comprises quartz pressure element and charge amplifier, mounted on the indicator pipes, equipped with valves. The required crank degree signal is obtained from shaft encoder that is installed on the test bed engine shaft-line (free end of the hydraulic break). The encoder's TDC dedicated reference pulse is able generate simultaneously at the cylinder 1 and 6 in TDC position. The accuracy of the static crankshaft position calibration was evaluated. Additionally, a complex timing system was developed for individual cylinder TDC and crankshaft positioning definition. Before real time data acquisition starts, the number of engine cycles is defined for recording and the first pulse of each crankshaft revolution is used as trigger signal, so that all instantaneous pressure and crank angle signals acquisition can be started at the identical crankshaft position. The method provides required numbers of combustion cycles to be measured for time domain averaging and off line processing.

In the paper has been presented the analysis of diagnostic utility of signals, deriving from torque (measured value is an instantaneous shaft's torsion angle, torque value is subsequently calculated basing on shaft's steel Kirhoff's modulus or Young's modulus values) and angular acceleration of the propulsion shaft. All measurements has been carried out using photo optic torque meter ETNP-10, which was installed at the propulsion shaft run by two-stroke low speed marine diesel engine. In order to distinguish diagnostic signals, measurements of healthy engine run and subsequently simulations of a failure by one cylinder cut-off (suspending of a fuel pump) were done. Analysis of torque, revolutionary speed, angular acceleration were and subsequently, in order to distinguish spectral attributes of above functions, fast Fourier transform of speed waveforms were carried out. Diagrams presented in the paper shows comparison of mentioned above signals' waveforms. The most significant influence of simulated combustion process deviation at a signal's variation was noticed when rotational speed and angular acceleration of the shaft were considered. Acquired results of research and measurements are to be a subject of further analysis in order to define representative symptoms and diagnostic values corresponding to propulsion system and engine failures.

Opis:
In general, the performance of a ship in service is different from that obtained on shipyard sea trial. Apart from any differences due to loading conditions, and for which due correction should be made, these differences arise principally from the weather, fouling and surface deterioration of the hull and propeller. The influence of the weather, both in terms of wind and sea conditions, is an extremely important factor in ship performance analysis. Consequently, the weather effects needs to be taken into account if a realistic evaluation is to be made. The primary role of the ship service analysis is a standard of performance data, under varying operational and environmental conditions. The resulting information, derived from this data, becomes the basis for operational and chartering decision. In addition, the part for the data records is to enable the analysis of trends of either the hull or machinery, from which the identification of potential failure scenarios and maintenance decisions can be derived. The traditional method of data collection is the deck and engine room log records, and this is the most commonly used method today. In terms of data processing and capabilities, this method of data collection is far from ultimate, since involves significant data distortion risk. Instrumentation errors are always a potential source of concern in performance analysis methods. Such errors are generally in the form of instrument drift or gross distortion of the reading. However, these can generally be detected by the use of trend analysis techniques. The procedure for the evaluation of the ship's service performance, that relies on proven methods of main propulsion engine service data analysis used and applied for container vessel - small feeder. The vessel is equipped with indirect main propulsion, driven by means of modern medium speed engine. The different approach demonstrated to achieve the reliable and accurate main engine performance. The difference in developed engine power has been found, that corresponds well to registered sea trial results and engine retrofitting reports done, in order to limit the effective power.

One of the main anthropogenic sources of PAHs emission is motorization, especially compression ignition engines. The researches of International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) proved that some compounds from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons group are toxic for live organisms and cause damages of adrenal glands, lymphatic, circulation and respiratory systems. Because of carcinogenic properties and common occurrence in human environment benzo(a)pirene has been accepted as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons indicator. In relation to benzo(a)pirene, Nisbet and LaGoy determined relative carcinogenic coefficients (RCC) for individual polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The paper presents results of analysis of PAHs RCC emitted from SB3.1 self-ignition engine with Pt active coating application inside. The catalyst was applied on engine valves surface. Zirconium ceramic was chosen as a coating for catalyst application (also because of its thermo-isolating properties). Because of unstable parameters of self-ignition engine work (pressure and temperature jumps), PAHs were extracted from two phases: gas phase and solid phase (particle matter - PM). A chromatographic method of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons identification and analysis, because of their low level of concentration in exhaust gases, needed to be supported by sample purification and enrichment stages. It has been found that implementation of catalytic coating on valves of the engine causes decrease of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons concentration in exhaust gases, what results in decrease (in most cases) of the sum of relative carcinogenic coefficient of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

One of the main factors influencing on the optimal combustion process in a marine diesel engine’s cylinder is the fuel injection spray and the fuel atomization. The complexity of mentioned phenomena in the marine diesel engine’s cylinder may cause difficulties in their analysis. Measurement methods, allowing obtaining information about the process of fuel injection and evaporation in the diesel engine’s cylinder are qualified as optical visualization methods. It provides non-invasive measurement of parameters of fuel injection spray. The article presents the analysis of various aspects of optical measurement methods application that allow specifying parameters of fuel injection spray in the diesel engine’s cylinder. Initial studies were carried out using Mie scattering method. In addition, visualization obtained by shadowgraphy method was presented also. The constant volume chamber was used as a working area. The conventional light source was used in case of Mie scattering and a laser light source in shadowgraphy. For the lighting test was used a double-pulse Nd:YAG laser. The wavelength laser 532 nm was used. A course of the injection process was recorded by high-speed camera. The Mie scattering method allows analysing the fuel injection phenomena in macro scale. Specified geometric parameters. The shadowgraphy method allows to asses parameters of diesel fuel injection from marine diesel engine’s injector in the micro scale.

The most important reason is that knowledge in this system is not a static whole, but is subject to dynamic growth, is modified and updated. Advantages afforded by the creation of diagnostic systems based on knowledge, such as expert systems, compared to traditional diagnostic systems based on closed algorithms were characterized. The conception of knowledge management system established in the diagnostic work associated with the development of expert system for marine diesel engine diagnosis. The main elements of the developed management system are: dictionary editor, rule editor, knowledge assessment module and import and export module. Knowledge management system is also equipped with an electronic form that is used to obtain knowledge from experts, specialists in diesel engines operation. The article presents the tasks and the performance of individual components of the system. The knowledge management system enables integration within a single frame of both information collected from experts and automatically collected one. A doubtless advantage of expert system is the opportunity of updating and developing the content recorded in the database. Due to this feature, the effectiveness of the system may grow during engine operation and facilitate gaining new experience.

The paper presents results of analysis how sea waves affect variation of angular speed of a propulsion shaft of the ship during sea passage. That information is necessary to evaluate the level of credibility of measurements taken as reference value for detection of main engine combustion failures and evaluation of cylinders’ contribution to total power based on shaft’s angular speed irregularity observations. Utilization of IAS (Instantaneous Angular Speed) for diagnostic purposes is mostly based on comparison of actual state measurement with characteristics taken during healthy engine run in certain outer conditions. All variations of atmospheric pressure and air temperature have noticeable impact at instantaneous value of angular speed, they and must be considered during comparison procedure. For marine propulsion set, two weather deriving factors, having impact at angular speed of the shaft, can occur. First one is mentioned above values of air temperature and air pressure, the second one is torque variations caused by changes of propeller’s draught due to pitch of the hull. Any deviations from sampling course of angular speed are treated as malfunction symptoms. The aim of analysis was to evaluate how pitching frequency affect run of IAS and how whether omitting of that impact can lead to wrong conclusions.

Opis:
The article presents the bench testing results of a four stroke, four cylinder, direct injection, unmodified, naturally aspirated diesel engine operating on neat rapeseed oil (RO) and its 2.5vol% (ERO2.5) and 7.5vol percent (ERO7.5) blends with ethanol. The purpose of the research was to investigate the effect of ethanol inclusion in the RO and preheating temperature on bio-fuel viscosity, engine brake power, specific fuel consumption, break thermal efficiency and emission composition changes, especially NO, NO2, NOx, CO, CO2, HC and smoke opacity of the exhausts. Inclusion in the RO 2.5 and 7.5vol% of ethanol the blend viscosity at ambient temperature of 20 centigrade diminishes by 9.2 and 28.3%. During operation under constant air-to-fuel equivalence ratio gamma = 1.6, blends ERO2.5 and ERO7.5 ensure the brake mean effective pressure (bmep) lower at the maximum torque 1800 min-1 by 0.5 and 2.3% (bmep=0.770 mpa) and at rated 2200 min1 speed by 2.4 and 9.1% (bmep=0.740 mpa), correspondingly, than that of neat RO case. The bsfc at maximum torque (248.7 g/kwh) and rated power (247.5 g/kwh) for blends ERO2.5 and ERO7.5 is higher by 1.3-4.4% and 4.2-10.7% and the brake thermal efficiency lower by 0.5-1.5% and 3.3-7.6%, respectively. The tests revealed that during operation of the fully loaded engine at rated 2200 min-1 speed, ethanol inclusion in the RO up to 7.5vol% diminishes NO, nox, HC, CO2 emissions, smoke opacity and temperature of the exhausts however it may increase simultaneously NO2, NO2/NOx and CO emissions.

In 2008 the International Maritime Organization - IMO decided to strengthen the requirements for new ships from 2011 - Tier II. However, for Emission Control Areas (ECAs), such as the Baltic Sea, stringent rules will apply from 1 January 2016 for new ships - Tier III. The new standards introduce restrictions on exhaust emissions from diesel engines - NOx and SOx. The paper presents proposal of new design an existing exhaust gas system of experimental marine diesel engine, which is situated in the Laboratory of Maritime Academy in Szczecin. The conception is due to meet to new environmental regulations. Arrangements of exhaust line, CFD model of the SCR reference plant, CFD model - inlet and outlet boundary conditions, pressure loss model for the catalytic elements, simulation results - streamlines, velocity distribution, reaction progress distribution ate presented in the paper as well design description of system of laboratory- 4-stroke and turbocharged engine. . The means of the reduction systems are based on conventional marine exhaust gas installation that includes noise silencer and soot-catcher. The after-treatment methods do not introduce significant changes in engine arrangement and operation. A new gas purifying system should be installed in the engine exhaust gas system.

The paper presents results of the experiment, aimed on finding the answer whether IAS (Instantaneous Angular Speed) and angular acceleration of the crankshaft is carrying information about quality of combustion in cylinder of the diesel engine. The experiment was carried out at laboratory stand in Gdynia Maritime University, equipped with diesel engine Sulzer 3AL 25/30 driving electro-generator. Sulzer 3AL 25/30 is three cylinder, medium speed, four stroke marine diesel engine, with maximum output 408 kW at 750 rpm. In order to evaluate of IAS utility for diagnosis of the engine, two kinds of malfunctions of engine's fuel system were simulated. First malfunction was fuel leakage from high-pressure line; the second was partly plugged injector's nozzle. Construction of high-pressure fuel pump enables to simulate fuel leakage. The level of leakage was controlled by simultaneous measurement of pressure in the high-pressure tube. For simulation of injector malfunction, the chocked one was installed in second cylinder. The engine was running at different loads, starting from around 25% up to 70% of nominal. The IAS was measured and recorded by the measurement system ETNP-10, which mode of operation was based on perforated disc mounted at the shaft and photo-optic sensor counting laser impulses. Results of all measurement were smoothed in order to eliminate a noise. Measurement results of fault condition were compared with healthy engine measurements and with results of in-cylinder pressure diagrams, in order to detect all deviation from normal condition.

This paper describes the experimental method - using non-thermal plasma reactor to cleaning exhaust gases - focused on PM compound. The demonstrator NTP reactor assembly was built as the by-pass in the real exhaust gas after-treatment system, in marine diesel engine. The reactor used to experiment is called - DBD (dielectric barrier discharge) type, The main aim of investigation was to analyze exhaust gas PM compounds under steady load of the engine. Test bench construction enables direct exhaust stream (main exhaust duet by-pass) to plasma reactor exposure with no additional components (coolers, orifices) that can change the exhaust gas properties. A new monitoring PM analyzing system, which can measure soot and SOF in low mass level, has been engaged. It consist of a diffusion charging (DC) detector with a dilution device for soot measurement, and two differential flame ionization detection (FID) method, which uses two FID detectors with separate sample lines. Exhaust emission reduction strategy for ships, Particulate Matters - PM in exhaust gas, non-thermal plasma reactor, experimental test bed and procedure, an example of reactor power measurement, test results provided into seven stages are presented in the paper.

Opis:
Large seagoing vessels are one of the largest pollution sources in the sea environment world. Marine engines operate with extremely low quality fuels contaminated by sulphur and aromatic compounds. Vessels are responsible for an estimated 14 percent total nitrogen oxide emission and 16 percent sulphur oxide, respectively. Nitrogen oxides emissions cause serious problems including acid rain in local areas such as harbours' vicinity. All diesel engine manufacturers have been working on reducing on NOx from ships. This paper describes one of the experimental methods - using non-thermal plasma reactor. NTP reactor was built as the after-treatment module in exhaust gas system in marine diesel engine. Emission measurements were carried out on the engine with and without demonstrator NTP module. The main aim was to analyze exhaust gas compounds during real engine operation, in accordance with test cycles procedureD-2 and E-2 (ISO-8178 rules). The experiment test bench gives the innovative role in the development exhaust gas after-treatment technology for marine systems. One of the most promising methods to decrease the number of toxic compounds from exhaust gas is implementing of NTP reactor as after main treatment module. As the next steps a two-stage plasma-chemical process for the control of harmful compounds: non-thermal plasma reactor and catalyst is proposed. This combination should be more effective and probably gives reduction with more efficiency of harmful exhaust gas compounds.

The paper presents the results of lubricating properties tests of Marinol RG 1240 motor oil used in trunk piston marine diesel engines and modified by chemical interaction aftermarket additives – Motor Life Professional and Mind. The test results were collected by means of a four-ball extreme pressure tester T-02 according to Polish Norm PN-76/C-04147. The following lubricating properties parameters were determined: weld load Pz, maximum nonseizure load Pn, seizure load Pt, load wear index Ih and load limit of wear Goz. Investigations showed that tested chemical interaction aftermarket additives improve load wear index Ih, and seizure load Pt (in case of Motor Life Professional), simultaneously impair maximum non-seizure load Pn. Weld load Pz remains on the same level. But the load limit of wear Goz which characterises the wear resistance in extremely hard working conditions increases considerably- 542% for tested oil with the addition of 5% by volume of Motor Life Professional and 520% with the addition of 5% by volume of Mind additive. These results indicates that tested aftermarket additives can form additional boundary layer (independent of lubricating oil boundary layer) which activates in extreme working conditions (very high temperatures and loads) of the sliding node elements. That layer could protect machines elements against seizure. In authors opinion, modifying of motor oils (provided with antiwear and antiseizure additives by the manufacturer) by chemical interaction aftermarket additives can increase durability and reliability of the machine elements especially in hard working condition for example frequent starts and load changes, overloads, operation in polluted atmosphere (transport, mining, building engineering etc.).

The control of nox emissions from marine engines proves a challenge. Diesel engine manufacturers have been investigating a variety of methods with aim of reducing nox emissions. Currently, the plasma technology is undergoing rapid development in application to diesel engine exhausts. A combination of non-thermal plasma with catalysts can be referred to plasma assisted catalysts technology. This paper briefly describes research efforts aimed at non-thermal plasma reactor development for ship use with primary focus on NO oxidation condition. The part scale plasma reactor models have been designed and manufactured for the purpose of this trial. Exhaust emission plasma after-treatment module was fitted on exhaust outlet path of the marine test bed engine for fractional exhaust gas stream examination. Subsequently, the comprehensive series of trials were performed to assess the exhaust flow properties of the main exhaust channel and plasma reactor by-pass duct. Emission measurements were carried out on engine at steady-state operation. The NO reaction activity was a major task of the experiment and throughout the measurements, the engine outlet nox levels (NO and NO2) were monitored with simultaneous NO, NO2, N2O level recording after NTP reactor.

Greater interdependence and integration among the countries worldwide have resulted in the growth of the world trade and, what follows, marine transportation. In the last few years, despite the world economic stagnation, the number of ships has increased. An increase in the marine transportation means greater air pollution caused by ships, what is of paramount importance for the port cities. One of the efficient ways of limiting the negative impact of ships lying in ports on the environment is the power supply from the local electricity stations. This will allow for turning marine power generating systems off, what will result in the emission elimination in the ship’s mooring time along with the decrease of noise and vibrations. The infrastructure of the port electric installation necessary for the ships’ supply has to be designed so as to make the operating of different ship types possible. It is complicated as all over the world ships are equipped with different electric systems. The paper deals with general issues related to common nominal voltages and frequencies for vessels which call in European harbours and their estimated power demands. Additionally, a case study of a ferry vessel, currently undergoing retrofitting for shore connections, is presented and some particulars concerning technical solutions and environmental profits are described.

In the diagnostics of piston engines, including marine engines, special interest arouses use single-zone model based on indicator diagrams as a source of information. Based on the results their own research we analysed the impact on the characteristics of heat release of simplifying assumptions in the model of heat release, including constant value adiabatic exponent. In the temperature, range 300÷2800 K waveformsκ are considered to be linearly dependent on the temperature. Based on the above, for the gas temperature from 800 K to 1850 K value of the exponent κ decreases about 3%. The effect of the value κ on the course of characteristics q and Q, to the typical marine engines was shown.

The paper presents the results research related to the possibility of fuel injection pump diagnosis on the basis of indicator diagram. The study was conducted on a laboratory four-stroke marine engine, type Sulzer 3Al 25/30, with nominal power Nen = 408 kW at nominal rotational speed n = 750 rpm. The study was carried out according to active experiment plan, during which the engine failure of the injection system was simulated. Simulation of fuel pump leakage was completed by the opening of the adjusting screw on the pump discharge. As demonstrated in the work of analyzing the heat release rate q, it is possible to infer diagnosis on the technical condition of the fuel injection system.

This article describes the methodology of creating algorithms and diagnostic programs. Still in the construction of such algorithms and diagnostic creating programs mostly is used classical approach, the methodological basis can be reduced to the several basic tasks. One of them is the proper selection and minimization of diagnostic parameters. The article shows the importance of proper selection and minimization of diagnostic parameters on the example of the diagnostics of the injection system of a marine diesel engine. It was indicated to practical usefulness for this purpose calculated the values sensitivity of a given parameter. The stronger the diagnostic parameter responds to a change in the structural parameter, the greater its diagnostic sensitivity is and thus the early development of a given fault can be detected based on deviation analysis of this parameter from its reference value. Based on experimental data, FIS (Fault Isolation System) matrix was built after selecting and minimizing diagnostic parameters. Triple-valued evaluation of residues (–1, 0, +1) was used. The research was carried out on a real object – a four-stroke, mediumspeed marine engine from Sulzer. The impact of selected fault in the injection system on the diagnostic parameters was researched and a FIS (Fault Isolation System) matrix was built on this basis.

One of the important design parameters for internal combustion engines is the geometric compression ratio epsilon. It is defined by the ratio of the maximum volume of the combustion chamber Vmax at the bottom dead centre (BDC) piston position and a minimum volume of the combustion chamber Vmin at the top dead centre (TDC) piston position. Conventional engines have this parameter set unchangeable, what is not the solution ensuring optimal benefits coming from the heat release in the combustion process, especially under altering conditions of load and speed in which they perform powering the road vehicles. It is reflected mainly in exhaust emission problem. Despite a considerable progress, further improving the ecological and energetic performances of the piston engines faces severe system limits, elimination of which requires major changes in engine design, including conversion the fixed compression ratio into the flexible one. For such innovative engine designs with so-called variable compression ratio VCR feature the geometric compression ratio parameter is as the one of the operation regulators. Due to the new development prospect the paper scope is an analysis and showing some results for the impact of compression ratio on the emissions of selected exhaust harmful components for a direct injection diesel engine. The schematics and prototype solutions for VCR technology are briefly presented too.

Opis:
The ship "Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI)" has been formulated by the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) as a measure of the CO2 emission performance of ships. The ship EEDI is calculated based on characteristics of the ship at build, incorporating parameters including ship capacity, engine power and fuel consumption. Shipping is responsible for CO2 discharge of approximately 3.3% global emission and despite being an energy-efficient transport means, compared with other transport modes, there are opportunities for increasing energy efficiency. The EEDI requires a minimum energy efficiency level (CO2 emissions) per capacity mile (e.g. tonne mile) for different ship type and size sectors. With the level being tightened over time, the EEDI will stimulate continued technical development of all the components influencing the energy efficiency of a ship. The paper presents an overview of EEDI calculation method for container vessels and results of experimental approach. The experimental process results through comprehensive analysis of operational data, from modern container vessel, equipped with direct main propulsion unit have been introduced. Ship operators have already been implementing energy efficiency operational measures and set goals for reducing the energy consumption of their fleet. Performance and savings are not always monitored and reported. However, it can be foreseen that such activity when is successfully promoted, reduction of CO2 emissions can be achieved.

Opis:
The manuscript presents the model of the air flow through the air inlet duct of the marine 4-stroke engine. Presented model are computational fluid dynamic modelbased on dimensions and the construction of the real air intake duct. The measurement parameters from real object are used to the model validation. Mentioned measurements of the air flow are conducted by Venturi orifice for different loads of the engine and the different flow characteristics of the air intake duct. The results from computational fluid dynamic model are useful to calibration the orifice by setting the orifice module. The orifice module changes up to 6% of the mean values for all considered loads of the engine and throttling’s of the air intake duct. The approximation the flow characteristic for other throttling’s of the air intake duct was conducted also. The obtained approximation is useful tool to calculate the air flow to the engine for the different throttling’s than measured. Linear dependence between the air mass flow and the power of the engine at the constant engine speed was observed. The throttling of the cross section area of the air intake duct causes changing the characteristic in accordance to a second order polynomial. The maximum error of obtained approximation compared to measured values not excided 4% and mean error for all measured loads and throttling’s not exceeded 0.12%.

Opis:
This paper presents the issues related to the impact of the technical condition elements of the turbocharger system on the parameters of marine diesel engine. Turbocharger system, in addition to the injection system has a significant impact on the quality of the working process, the economics and reliability of the engine. Contamination of elements of the turbocharger system are the most common faults (24.7% of all damage to marine engines). Contamination the following relates to elements: air filters, compressor, air cooler, scavenging system elements and turbine. The detailed data follows that the contamination are usually in: flow channels supercharger – 56%, turbine flow channels – 22%, air cooler – 11%, air filter – 6%, scavenging system elements – 4%, other elements – 1%. The technical condition influence of air filter, compressor and air cooler was analyzed. The analysis was supported by the results of their own research, carried out in the laboratory on the marine diesel engine, four– stroke 3AL25/30 SULZER, supercharged turbocharger VTR160N Brown Boveri. The research was performed in the form of an active experiment to simulate contamination of particular elements of the turbocharging system. Technical condition change of the air filter, the air compressor and the air cooler have been investigated.

Opis:
The paper presents the preliminary investigations of nitric oxides (NOx) estimation from marine two-stroke engines. The Annex VI to Marpol Convention enforce to ship - owners necessity of periodical direct measurements of the NOx emission from the ship engines. It is very expensive procedure but with a low accuracy. Presented investigations show the possibility of estimation the NOx emission without direct measurements but using the artificial neural network (ANN). The paper presents chosen structures of ANN's usable to NOx emission estimation, the laboratory investigations and effects of estimation NOx emission. The paper reports the effects of investigations during different points of load the engine, with constant and changeable air/fuel equivalence ratio. The detailed results of measurement and calculation of NOx concentration in the exhaust gases of marine two-stroke diesel engine were presented. The results show that the multilayer perception neural network (MLP) is sufficient to NOx emission estimation during onboard exploitation. The MLP network with 15 neurons in the hidden layer has best accuracy for data sets collected during running the engine with speed equal 200 rpm and constant air/fuel equivalence ratio and for both considered speeds of the engine with changeable air/fuel equivalence ratio.

Opis:
The paper compares the basic parameters of the process of combustion in the Fiat MultUet 1.3 SDE 90 KM with and without an exhaust gas recirculation system, running according to load characteristics with the following engine crankshaft rotational speeds: n=l200 ipm, 1750 rpm and 3000 rpm. During testing, the engine was supplied with commercial diesel oil. The tested engine was provided with external exhaust gas recirculation consisting in supplying a specific amount of exhaust gas back to the cylinder via an EGR electric solenoid valve. The exhaust gas delivered to the cylinder was cooled. Exhaust gas is composed of inert gases that do not take part in the combustion process. This causes, above all, a lower rate of pressure increase in the cylinder and a lower heat release rate. Thanks to exhaust gas recirculation, lower maximal temperatures prevail in the cylinder, and the engine's operation is "softer." During experimental testing, the variation of cylinder pressure and chamber pressure, the injector operation control current magnitude, effective power, torque and the hourly fuel consumption, as well as the exhaust gas recirculation rate. Actual indicator diagrams plotted were used for determining the heat release characteristics, based on which the percentage fractions of the burned out fuel charge injected during one engine running cycle namely 5, 10, 50 and 90% fractions were determined. In addition, the indicator indices were determined. The paper has demonstrated the effect of exhaust gas recirculation on the processes occurring inside the cylinder in the self ignition internal combustion engine.
