Opis:
A quantitative description of soil hysteretic response during drying-wetting cycles is required to improve prediction of the soil water retention model. The objective of the study is to quantify the degree of hysteresis, which is helpful to evaluate the precision of soil water flow calculation. A new procedure to quantify the degree of hysteresis is presented. The Arya-Paris model allows assessment of hysteresis effects from initial drying curves, dynamic contact angles, degree of hysteresis value, and maximum difference value between drying and subsequent wetting curves. The experimental results show that the degree of hysteresis varies with the particle size, bulk density, void ratio, initial water content, and contact angle of the soil. The new findings can be very useful in modelling soil water flows.

Opis:
.Measurements of single-kernel mass and volume made on healthy (control) and scab-damaged samples of grain of three winter wheat varieties never resulted in lower values of mean single-kernel density for scab-damaged grain. This finding, contrary to common opinion, can be explained as being a result of the comparable magnitude of relative decrease (due to infestation) of two features (mass and volume) that define single-kernel density. The discrepancy between results presented in this paper (kernel volume was determined with an air pycnometer) and the results in some other reports (liquid pycnometers used) can result from the different methods applied for kernel volume measurements: when a liquid medium is used the surface tension effect tends to overestimate the volume, especially for scabby kernels that are known to be shrivelled ie possessing voids and pores at the surface that the liquid cannot penetrate. As a consequence kernel density of scabby kernels can be significantly underestimated.

Opis:
In this study, we sought to find and employ positive effects of UV-A irradiation on cultivation and quality of microgreens. Therefore, the goal of our study was to investigate the influence of 366, 390, and 402 nm UV-A LED wavelengths, supplemental for the basal solid-state lighting system at two UV-A irradiation levels on the growth and phytochemical contents of different microgreen plants. Depending on the species, supplemental UV-A irradiation can improve antioxidant properties of microgreens. In many cases, a significant increase in the investigated phytochemicals was found under 366 and 390 nm UV-A wavelengths at the photon flux density (12.4 μmol m-2 s-1). The most pronounced effect of supplemental UV-A irradiation was detected in pak choi microgreens. Almost all supplemental UV-A irradiation treatments resulted in increased leaf area and fresh weight, in higher 2,2–diphenyl–1–picrylhydrazyl free-radical scavenging activity, total phenols, anthocyanins, ascorbic acid, and α-tocopherol.

Opis:
Concerning the contribution of fungi to soil carbon sequestration, various methods have been used to extract ergosterol from soil samples. This study aims to explore the extraction ability and applicability of commonly used methods to extract ergosterol from two contrasting soils. An agricultural soil (chernozem) and a forest soil (podzol) were extracted with different types of cell lysis such as alkaline, glass bead, and ultrasonication methods in association with simple shaking. The ergosterol concentration was measured by high pressure liquid chromatography. Regardless of the method applied, ergosterol yield was higher in podzol than in chernozem. Alkaline extraction resulted in the highest ergosterol concentrations for both soils and miniaturized glass bead extraction produced comparable results in the case of chernozem. In terms of applicability, the non-alkaline methods were simpler to conduct and less demanding of labour, chemical use and glassware and more flexible in terms of the equipment used for mechanical disruption. Despite the limit of the two soil types in the present study, only the simple shaking method was revealed to be dependent on soil type. Based on our results, we recommend the miniaturized glass bead method for agricultural soils, low in organic matter for high throughput. However, not all of the methods described allow for the proper separation of coextracted organic substances from organic-rich soil.
