Opis:
Mechanically harvested crops must be erect (lodging resistant) to facilitate harvest. Stem lodging changes canopy structure, increases disease pressure, reduces yield, and reduces harvest efficiency in pea. A number of studies have examined the traits that cause lodging susceptibility, but the relative impact of each trait is difficult to determine. A great need exists in pea breeding to develop a working model to explain lodging resistance. This study used the flexure formula to predict the amount of lodging variation explained by some of the major traits. Datasets from pea indicate that the percent variation explained by this lodging model is ~58%, and this model can be used to predict the relative impact of an increase in load, height, stem diameter, stem wall thickness, or yield on lodging susceptibility. This study indicates that plant height is strongly correlated with lodging susceptibility, but stem diameter is positively correlated with lodging resistance. Stem wall thickness appears to have no major effect on lodging resistance, which has not been previously reported in pea. Any doubling in plant height would also double the amount of stem material, but stem stress is expected to increase fourfold. A doubling in stem diameter is expected to increase the amount of stem material by fourfold and decrease stem stress by eightfold. The results of this study indicate that plant breeders should focus on increasing basal stem diameter to increase lodging resistance.

Opis:
Methane emission from a wetland was measured with the eddy covariance system. The location of the system allowed observation of methane efflux from areas that were covered by different vegetation types. The data presented in this paper were collected in the period between the13th of June and the 31st of August 2012. During the warmest months of the summer, there was no strong correlation between methane emissions and either the water table depth or peat temperature. The presence of reed and cattail contributed to a pronounced diurnal pattern of the flux and lower methane emission, while areas covered by sedges emitted higher amounts more with no clear diurnal pattern.

Opis:
Resistance of material to airflow is an important factor to consider in the design of a dryer or an aeration system. The airflow resistance of soybean was determined with the modified airflow resistance apparatus. It was found that pressure drop increased with increase in airflow rate, bulk density, bed depth and decreased with moisture content. Modified Shedd equation, Hukill and Ives equation and modified Ergun equation were examined for pressure drop prediction. Airflow resistance was accurately described by modified Shedd equation followed by Hukill and Ives equation and modified Ergun equation. The developed statistical model comprised of airflow rate, moisture content and bulk density could fit pressure drop data reasonably well.

Opis:
In order to understand the roles of abscisis acid in soybean exposed to UV-C radiation, soybean seedlings were exposed to UV-C radiation and ABA was applied. The chlorophyll content, active oxygen metabolism and flavonoids content of soybean seedlings were investigated. The present study revealed that UV-C radiation significantly attenuated the chlorophyll content and suppressed PSII activity. It was observed that the contents of H2O2, malondialdehyde and O2 - were markedly increased, and the activities of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and catalase were enhanced, so were the flavonoids content, whereas the seedling height and biomass were significantly reduced. ABA application improved the activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase and the contents of flavonoids, decreased the contents of H2O2, MDA and O2 -, and also increased the chlorophyll content and enhanced PSII performance, thus enhancing biomass accumulation. The results suggested that ABA alleviated UV-C damage to soybean seedlings by reducing ROS generation and enhancing antioxidase activity. The isoflavones daidzin and genistein were significantly responsive to UV-C.

Opis:
In this research, sterile soil columns with different contents of biochar made from apple-tree residues (0, 1 and 5% w/w) at three levels of water filled pore space (40, 60, and 80%) were set up in the laboratory to study nitrous oxide diffusion and binding processes. The results indicated that nitrous oxide emission can be effectively mitigated at 5% biochar regardless of soil water content. However, 1% biochar stimulated nitrous oxide diffusion compared to the other biochar treatments, which was opposite to expectations due to the stronger aeration than adsorption effect, while 0% had a suppression effect between 1 and 5%. Nitrous oxide emissions increased with increasing water filled pore space due to concomitantly decreasing biochar tortuousity at high water content. The increase of nitrogen from 1.11 to 1.50% on the biochar surface in the 5% treatment, and from 1.11 to 1.46% in the 100% biochar treatment, suggested that the main abiotic mechanisms for mitigation of nitrous oxide emission is adsorption and subsequent reactions with C = C bonds on appletree biochar surfaces since C = O and C-O bonds both increased and C=C/C-C/C-H declined.

Opis:
The aim of the present study was to reveal an effective extraction procedure for maximization of the yield of steviol glycosides and total phenolic compounds as well as antioxidant activity in stevia extracts. Ultrasound assisted extraction was compared with conventional solvent extraction. The exami-ned solvents were water (100ºC/24 h) and 70% ethanol (at 70°C for 30 min). Qualitative and quantitative analyses of steviol glycosides in the extracts obtained were performed using high performance liquid chromatography. Total phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and radical scavenging capacity by 2, 2-azino-di-3-ethylbenzothialozine-sulphonic acid) assay were also determined. The highest content of steviol glycosides, total phenolic compounds, and flavonoids in stevia extracts were obtained when ultrasound assisted extraction was used. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was correlated with the total amount of phenolic compounds. The results indicated that the examined sonication parameters represented as the probe diameter (7 and 22 mm) and treatment time (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 min) significantly contributed to the yield of steviol glycosides, total phenolic compounds, and flavonoids. The optimum conditions for the maximum yield of steviol glycosides, total phenolic compounds, and flavonoids were as follows: extraction time 10 min, probe diameter 22 mm, and temperature 81.2oC.

Opis:
For a herbaceous species, the inverse of the fresh leaf surface density, the Hughes constant, is nearly conserved. We apply the Hughes constant to develop an absolute method of leafarea measurement that requires no regression fits, prior calibrations or oven-drying. The Hughes constant was determined in situ using a known geometry and weights of a sub-set obtained from the fresh leaves whose areas are desired. Subsequently, the leaf-areas (at any desired stratification level), were derived by utilizing the Hughes constant and the masses of the fresh leaves. The proof of concept was established for leaf-discs of the plants Mandevilla splendens and Spathiphyllum wallisii. The conservativeness of the Hughes constant over individual leaf-zones and different leaftypes from the leaves of each species was quantitatively validated. Using the globally averaged Hughes constant for each species, the leaf-area of these and additional co-species plants, were obtained. The leaf-area-measurement-by-mass was cross-checked with standard digital image analysis. There were no statistically significant differences between the leaf-area-measurement-by-mass and the digital image analysis measured leaf-areas and the linear correlation between the two methods was very good. Leaf-areameasurement- by-mass was found to be rapid and simple with accuracies comparable to the digital image analysis method. The greatly reduced cost of leaf-area-measurement-by-mass could be beneficial for small agri-businesses in developing countries.

Some data of the physical properties of ginkgo nuts at a moisture content of 45.53% (±2.07) (wet basis) and of their kernels at 60.13% (± 2.00) (wet basis) are presented in this paper. It consists of the estimation of the mean length, width, thickness, the geometric mean diameter, sphericity, aspect ratio, unit mass, surface area, volume, true density, bulk density, and porosity measures. The coefficient of static friction for nuts and kernels was determined by using plywood, glass, rubber, and galvanized steel sheet. The data are essential in the field of food engineering especially dealing with design and development of machines, and equipment for processing and handling agriculture products.
