The article aims to summarize investigations which shed some light on the mechanisms of early second language acquisition and to draw from them pedagogical implications. Developing an optimal outline for foreign language teaching in early childhood should involve factors which make possible the use of inductive mechanisms of language acquisition by children.

Opis:
Internal rules of grammar exist in the language irrespective of how they are described by the linguists. This paper is an attempt to answer the question in what way internal rules develop both in the mother tongue and in instructed second language acquisition. The author refers to the hierarchy of processing procedures, chunk related and cognitively based research and demonstrates how this development may be supported in instructed second language acquisition.

The current paper refers to the particular phonetic and phonological substance of the Chinese language. The key topics include the acoustic features of tonal languages, speech sound and audio-perception, as well as some issues of acquisition of Chinese language skills and reception conditions. The difficulties in tonal phonemes identification in hearing-impaired native Chinese and in non-tonal language users learning Chinese as a foreign language inspire the scientists to research the register of tones, acoustic features of tonal languages, the fundamental frequency (F0), tone contour and duration, and the speech signal – natural and subjected to filtration.

Opis:
There is no doubt that Applied Linguistics has firmly established itself as an independent scientific field. However, there are thematic overlaps in some areas concerning other disciplines. Language Teaching Research is a prime example of how linguistic features can be applied in an instructional context. In a first step, the author investigates both the similarities and differences of Applied Linguistics and Language Teaching Research, before dealing with related topics such as second language acquisition, multilingual didactics, mediation, competences, and sensitivity regarding (foreign) language use. Finally, a response is formulated to the question of whether the field of Applied Linguistics functions as a bridge or an obstacle.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to scrutinise the determinants of heritage language maintenance and second language acquisition in immigrant speakers and assess their significance and weight.Over one hundred cases of bilingual speakers with Polish as L1 (heritage language; Polish speakers abroad) and as L2 (national language; immigrant learners of Polish in Poland) were investigated in order to better understand the linguistic changes and multilingual practices involved in the process of relocating to another country. The cases underwent quantitative and qualitative analysis. The results revealed that in most cases bilinguals are at a high risk of losing their L1, and L2 becomes their dominant language. With the dominance of L2, identification with the culture of the country of residence also increases in bilinguals. Formal instruction in L1 proves to be the most important factor in heritage language maintenance, and the preservation of a sense of identification with the heritage culture. An important role in L1 and also L2 development is played by parental support and their actions.

The present paper investigates the issue of motivation of foreign language learners. The main research question, concerning a possible link between the amount of language learning experience and learner motivation, remains unanswered. However, it turns out that a few learner characteristics which some researchers believe to correlate with language learning experience can probably serve as good predictors of foreign language learners’ motivation.

Inter-

German as a foreign language in teaching the third language
Opis:
According to F. Grucza’s anthropocentric conception of language, learning a foreign language consists in the acquisition and reconstruction of linguistic knowledge by learners, therefore nobody can be taught a language. Relations between languages can take the form of interrelations or transrelations. Does the prestige of a particular language influence the motivation or demotivation for learning it? Which perspective (inter- or trans-) is adopted nowadays in Poland for teaching German as a foreign language?

Various forms of language-activity influence the acquisition of a foreign language. In this article, the author underlines the importance of foreign-language exercises, and their effectiveness in the developing the learner’s encoding of decoded foreign-language information structures in the form of constant structure-matrices. The theories of teaching and learning drawn on in the article point to the variety of methods and degrees of foreign-language acquisition, both through cognitive exercises and through the pattern approach. Such exercises develop receptive and productive language-communication skills.

Opis:
The article investigates the use of pronouns to express subjects and objects in early acquisition of German as a foreign language. The main goal of the investigation is to shed some light on the process of development of information structure in the minds of young learners of a foreign language. The study investigates longitudinal data from children who were exposed to German in a school setting from the age of 7 or 9. The results of the empirical study show that children acquiring German in a school setting use a relatively high number of pronouns for subjects, but they rarely use pronouns to express objects. The pedagogical implication for developing an optimal outline for foreign language teaching in early childhood is the necessity to pay more attention to the development of pragmatic and discourse skills of children learning a foreign language.
