    Let A be an analytic family of sequences of sets of integers. We show that either A is dominated or it contains a continuum of almost disjoint sequences. From this we obtain a theorem by Shelah that a Suslin c.c.c. forcing adds a Cohen real if it adds an unbounded real.

    We investigate the sequential topology $τ_{s}$ on a complete Boolean algebra B determined by algebraically convergent sequences in B. We show the role of weak distributivity of B in separation axioms for the sequential topology. The main result is that a necessary and sufficient condition for B to carry a strictly positive Maharam submeasure is that B is ccc and that the space $(B,τ_{s})$ is Hausdorff. We also characterize sequential cardinals.

    The problem of description of the set Per(f) of all minimal periods of a self-map f:X → X is studied. If X is a rational exterior space (e.g. a compact Lie group) then there exists a description of the set of minimal periods analogous to that for a torus map given by Jiang and Llibre. Our approach is based on the Haibao formula for the Lefschetz number of a self-map of a rational exterior space.

    We are interested in a topological realization of a family of pseudoreflection groups $G ⊂ GL(n,{\sym F}_p )$; i.e. we are looking for topological spaces whose mod-p cohomology is isomorphic to the ring of invariants ${\sym F}_p [x_1,..., x_n]^G$. Spaces of this type give partial answers to a problem of Steenrod, namely which polynomial algebras over ${\sym F}_p $ can appear as the mod-p cohomology of a space. The family under consideration is given by pseudoreflection groups which are subgroups of the wreath product $ℤ/q ≀Σ_n$ where q divides p - 1 and where p is odd. Let G be such a subgroup acting on the polynomial algebra $A:= {\sym F}_p [x_1,..., x_n]$. We show that there exists a space X such that $H*(X;{\sym F}_p )≅ A^G$ which is again a polynomial algebra. Examples of polynomial algebras of this form are given by the mod-p cohomology of the classifying spaces of special orthogonal groups or of symplectic groups.
     The construction uses products of classifying spaces of unitary groups as building blocks which are glued together via information encoded in a full subcategory of the orbit category of the group G. Using this construction we also show that the homotopy type of the p-adic completion of these spaces is completely determined by the mod-p cohomology considered as an algebra over the Steenrod algebra. Moreover, we calculate the set of homotopy classes of self maps of the completed spaces.

    We describe an obstruction theory for an H-space X to be a loop space, in terms of higher homotopy operations taking values in $π_*X$. These depend on first algebraically "delooping" the Π-algebras $π_*X$, using the H-space structure on X, and then trying to realize the delooped Π-algebra.

    We investigate the completely Ramsey, Lebesgue, and Marczewski σ-algebras and their relations to the Baire property in the Ellentuck and density topologies. Two theorems concerning the Marczewski σ-algebra (s) are presented.

     THEOREM. In the density topology D, (s) coincides with the σ-algebra of Lebesgue measurable sets.

     THEOREM. In the Ellentuck topology on $[ω]^ω$, $(s)_0$ is a proper subset of the hereditary ideal associated with (s).

     We construct an example in the Ellentuck topology of a set which is first category and measure 0 but which is not $B_r$-measurable. In addition, several theorems concerning perfect sets in the Ellentuck topology are presented. In particular, it is shown that there exist countable perfect sets in the Ellentuck topology.

    This is a non-standard paper, containing some problems in set theory I have in various degrees been interested in. Sometimes with a discussion on what I have to say; sometimes, of what makes them interesting to me, sometimes the problems are presented with a discussion of how I have tried to solve them, and sometimes with failed tries, anecdotes and opinions. So the discussion is quite personal, in other words, egocentric and somewhat accidental. As we discuss many problems, history and side references are erratic, usually kept to a minimum ("see ..." means: see the references there and possibly the paper itself). The base were lectures in Rutgers, Fall '97, and reflect my knowledge then. The other half, [122], concentrating on model theory, will subsequently appear.
