Opis:
As fuel injection pressures keep rising, questions focus on additional benefits to be gained from the considerable efforts to achieve and handle the fuel pressure increments. The aim of fuel injection processes is to support the mixing of fuel molecules with oxygen. The steps towards this goal include fuel atomization, evaporation, heat transfer from air into the liquid or vaporized fuel together with transport of fuel for best air utilization. Engineering degrees of freedom include the parameters of the fuel injection system and handling of in-cylinder gas conditions. The paper describes basic high pressure flow processes, spray propagation, evaporation and combustion and the mixing of flame clouds with in-cylinder air for oxidation of high temperature soot particles. Experimental evidence of such processes is derived from laboratory flow tests as well as from optically accessed engines operated under conditions relevant for todays passenger car and heavy duty engines.

Opis:
The present study describes selected issues associated with the emission level in toxic exhaust gases and fuel injection timing. The study was focused on the following types of fuels: Diesel oil (the base fuel) and the other fuels were the mixture of fatty acid methyl ester with Camelina (L10 – diesel fuel with 10% V/V FAME of Camelina and L20 – diesel fuel with 10% V/V FAME of Camelina) was used. Fuel injection advanced angle was set for three different values – the factory setting – 12° before TDC, later injection – 7° and earlier injection – 17°. The most important conclusion is that in most measurement points registered in the same engine operating conditions, the concentration of fuel NOx in L10 and L20 increased but PM emissions decreased which is caused by active oxygen located in the internal structure of the fuel. This fact contributes to the rise in temperature during the combustion process. At the same time factory settings of the angle makes NOx emissions lower and close to reference fuel.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of the diesel engine research on the energy performance, components of exhaust gases and smoke and parameters related to the supply system for VW 1.9 TDI working in 2 modes: with standard, non-cooled EGR system, and without this system. All of measurements were carried out on the some engine speed – 2000 rpm (speed of maximum engine torque) and various engine loads. It was found that the serial engine control unit switches the EGR system off above 150 Nm engine load (Momax = 295 Nm). In this range of load the engine running with EGR is characterized by higher fuel consumption (lower total efficiency) ca. 5%, compared with engine without EGR. Concentration of NOx in exhaust gases was lower up to 45% but, at the same time, exhaust gas smoke and concentration of carbon oxides were strongly increasing. It can be seen that EGR system increases the temperature (up to 110°C) and changes the composition of air-exhaust gas in the intake manifold. One of reason of this fact is self-changing start of injection. Additional effect of EGR is lower air pressure behind turbocharger, because the flow of exhaust gases (into EGR) is taken before the turbine.

The paper presents the problem of the impact of external distortions originating on laboratory test stands on the results of measurements of fast-varying diesel exhaust gas temperature. It has been stressed how significant the aspect of the test stand adaptation is during an experiment to ensure the smallest possible impact. This paper, however, focuses on the methods of mathematical processing of a signal recorded during experimental research of a real object. The most significant parameter requiring filtering is the fast-varying exhaust gas temperature in the engine exhaust channel. Methods of mathematical processing adequate to this type of distorted signal have been presented, particularly those that can be used in the Matlab environment and consisting in averaging of the obtained curves of temperature changes. The results of the application of these methods have also been presented on actual curves recorded during laboratory tests and their evaluation has been made.

Opis:
The paper presents a method of classification of locomotive Diesel engine states basing on vibration signals taken from an engine body and using chosen statistical parameters calculated for the original signal and it wavelet multiresolution components. The researches presented in the paper concern estimation of an engine states before and after a general repair. The target application of the presented researches is an on-line diagnostic system which can complement standard OBD systems. To this purpose the applied methods should not base on complex analysis of some spectral, time-frequency or scalogram plots but rather on choosing single diagnostic parameters which are suitable for the fast on-line diagnostic. The results have showed the significant difference in distinguishing of engine work before and after a general repair using some chosen statistical parameters applied to vibration signals.

Opis:
Use of alternative fuels in compression ignition engines is the topic for many studies. This paper presents the results of lubricity, calorific value, viscosity, surface tension and density of a ketone blend with diesel to use as a fuel in compression ignition engine. Analyses of fuel properties are vital due to their effect on fuel system. In addition, this study is related to the development of future biofuels and it indicates the effect of oxygen double bond in molecular structure of ketones on important fuel properties. Cyclopentanone which has cyclic molecular structure was used; it can be produced from lignocellulosic biomass through various processing ways. This ketone was blended with diesel fuel at 10% vol. Results from fuel properties tests were compared to the conventional diesel fuel. In the next step this blend was tested in a research diesel engine to analyse its combustion behaviour and emission characteristics of exhaust gases; these results were compared with ultra-low sulphur diesel fuel. Results showed that cyclopentanone, as an additive to diesel, improved surface tension and density of the fuel but in contrast had negative effect on viscosity, lubricity and calorific value of the fuel, but still in the standard range. Combustion behaviour of this fuel in the diesel engine also showed longer ignition delay of ketone blend and also that gaseous emission such as CO and THC are higher than from diesel fuel and NOx emission is less than from conventional diesel fuel combustion.

Opis:
The article presents experimental test results of a DI single-cylinder, air-cooled diesel engine FL 511 operating with the normal (class 2) diesel fuel (DF), rapeseed oil (RO) and its 10%, 20% and 30% (v/v) blends with aviation-turbine fuel JP-8 (NATO code F-34). The purpose of the research was to analyse the effects of using various rapeseed oil and jet fuel RO90, RO80 and RO70 blends on brake specific fuel consumption, brake thermal efficiency, emissions and smoke of the exhaust. The test results of engine operation with various rapeseed oil and jet fuel blends compared with the respective parameters obtained when operating with neat rapeseed oil and those a straight diesel develops at full (100%) engine load and maximum brake torque speed of 2000 rpm. The research results showed that jet fuel added to rapeseed oil allows to decrease the value of kinematic viscosity making such blends suitable for the diesel engines. Using of rapeseed oil and jet fuel blends proved themselves as an effective measure to maintain fuel-efficient performance of a Didiesel engine. The brake specific fuel consumption decreased by about 6.1% (313.4 g/kW·h) and brake thermal efficiency increase by nearly 1.0% (0.296) compared with the respective values a fully (100%) loaded engine fuelled with pure RO at the same test conditions. The maximum NOx emission was up to 13.7% higher, but the CO emissions and smoke opacity of the exhaust 50.0% and 3.4% lower, respectively, for the engine powered with biofuel blend RO70 compared with those values produced by the combustion of neat rapeseed oil at full (100%) engine load and speed of 2000 rpm.

Opis:
To avoid the negative effects of increasing the amount of RME in the diesel fuel (to 10%), three different additive packages were used: stabilising, cleaning, and increasing the cetane number with different concentrations. The tests were carried out using a 4-cylinder, turbocharged 1.9 TDI engine from VW. The tests were carried out for 4 fuels (comparative fuel with a content of 7% RME and 3 test fuels with a content of 10% RME, differing in the content of the additive package. It was found that each of the 3 additive packages used does not have a significant impact on fuel consumption. However, a different effect of the tested additives on the composition of exhaust gases was observed. The first package had a slight effect on reducing the NOx concentration in the exhaust, but only for small engine loads. On the other hand, the second additive pack worked more effectively only at higher engine loads (in relation to the reduction of NOx concentration in the exhaust gases). In the third packet, the amount of the cetane additive was doubled (compared to the second packet). Then, the reduction in the NOx concentration in the exhaust gas by 3-8% was obtained with reference to the comparative fuel.

Stricter requirements for power in engines and difficulties in fueling gasoline engines at the airport make aircraft engine manufacturers design new engines capable of combusting fuel derived from JET-A1. New materials used in compression-ignition engines enable weight reduction, whereas the technologies of a Common Rail system, supercharging and 2-stroke working cycle enable us to increase the power generated by an engine of a given displacement. The paper discusses the parameters of about 40 types of aircraft compression ignition engines. The parameters of these engines are compared to the spark-ignition Rotax 912 and the turboprop. The paper also shows trends in developing aircraft compression-ignition engines.

Opis:
A mathematical model of joint operation of a piston engine with pulse turbine drive, compressor as well as air supply of a diesel locomotive is presented in the article. This model in an integral part of the complex engine-generator power unit of a diesel locomotive in steady states and transient conditions, developed by the authors. The periodic process in the exhaust manifold is represented as two specific characteristic ranges which encompass the process of forced exhaust and the scavenging process. The scavenging calculation is carried out jointly with the processes taking place in the inlet manifold of the engine, including inlet devices of the locomotive. The process of forced exhaust is calculated separately from the inlet processes and doesn`t require usage of empirical coefficients of impulsiveness. Both processes are represented as systems of nonlinear algebraic equations describe in the quasi-steady flow of working fluid in the elements of the inlet and exhaust tracts. The gas-dynamic calculation of the turbine in the transition process is conducted while taking into account changes in flow angles on the rotor blades. As a result of numerical calculation of the a8S22W diesel operational indices in transient modes, a satisfactory compliance of the calculated and the experimental results was obtained.
