Opis:: Existence theorems of positive solutions to a class of singular second order boundary value problems of the form y'' + f(x,y,y') = 0, 0 < x < 1, are established. It is not required that the function (x,y,z) → f(x,y,z) be nonincreasing in y and/or z, as is generally assumed. However, when (x,y,z) → f(x,y,z) is nonincreasing in y and z, some of O'Regan's results [J. Differential Equations 84 (1990), 228-251] are improved. The proofs of the main theorems are based on a fixed point theorem for weakly sequentially continuous operators.

Opis:: The conformal mapping ω(z) of a domain D onto the unit disc must satisfy the condition |ω(t)| = 1 on ∂D, the boundary of D. The last condition can be considered as a Dirichlet problem for the domain D. In the present paper this problem is reduced to a system of functional equations when ∂D is a circular polygon with zero angles. The mapping is given in terms of a Poincaré series.

Opis:: We consider the first initial-boundary value problem for the 2-D Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation in a unit disk with homogeneous boundary conditions, periodicity conditions in the angle, and small initial data. Apart from proving the existence and uniqueness of a global in time solution, we construct it in the form of a series in a small parameter present in the initial conditions. In the stable case we also obtain the uniform in space long-time asymptotic expansion of the constructed solution and its asymptotics with respect to the nonlinearity constant. The method can work for other dissipative parabolic equations with dispersion.

Opis:: The fourth order periodic boundary value problem $u^{(4)} - m⁴u + F(t,u) = 0$, 0 < t < 2π, with $u^{(i)}(0) = u^{(i)}(2π)$, i = 0,1,2,3, is studied by using the fixed point index of mappings in cones, where F is a nonnegative continuous function and 0 < m < 1. Under suitable conditions on F, it is proved that the problem has at least two positive solutions if m ∈ (0,M), where M is the smallest positive root of the equation tan mπ = -tanh mπ, which takes the value 0.7528094 with an error of $±10^{-7}$.
