Since the beginning of colonization, Brazilian Catholicism has been characterized by borrowing elements of religious practices from the many cultures among which it operated. Syncretism has always been an important feature of Brazilian religiousness, especially in its folk dimension, including all kinds of religious festivals - not only those accepted by the Church as official forms of religious life, but also those barely tolerated or totally rejected by the Church’s hierarchy. Referring to the experiences from the field research, the author of the article presents the characteristics of the celebration of some religious holidays in Salvador da Bahia, drawing attention to how the saints of Catholic religious worship function in syncretic local culture (especially in the context of popular Afro-Brazilian cults), how these festivals were initiated, how they evolved and what kind of socio-cultural transformations they are undergoing. In this context the author pays special attention to the processes of “carnivalisation” of the Catholic religious festivities, increasing their significance in the sphere of profanum and obscuring their original religious symbolism.

This article touches on the integrative aspects of non-verbal cultural communication as exemplified by diverse pantomime genres in modern Europe. The starting point being the characteristic features of this form of art, as well as its genesis and functions in the Eastern and Western parts of the globe. Festivals, which have been rapidly developing in the world of pantomime and street art since the beginning of the 1970s, play an exceptional role in European cultural exchange. They are, however, generally ephemeral projects, often placed besides institutionalised mainstream culture, with no aspirations to become part of the EFA for example. Nonverbal cultural communication in Europe is still poorly integrated and yet maintains a remarkable diversity of genres and multi-colour forms. Such decentralisation is also the source of its strength manifested by its ease in reaching an incredibly diverse audience, the ability to obtain feedback from mass audiences, its expansiveness (taking up various spaces), its flexible approach in its quest for answers - but at the same time respecting the rudiments of the rich, native European tradition of popular culture. It seems that EU institutions nowadays notice the significant role of this type of intercultural communication, asevidencedby, for example, the Commissioner Gabriel's statement regarding a meeting with EFA representatives on 22nd June 2021. The European Union has no harmonisation competences in the area of culture, but rather solely complementary and supporting functions with regards to Member States' activities - one can count on EU sectoral support funds from the Creative Europe Programme. The subsidisation of festival, confrontation, and meeting movements related to non-verbal cultural exchange can take place (and does take place) through regions, local governments, or cultural institutions.

In the article, I present an analysis of two Tết (Lunar New Year) festivals organised by the Vietnamese living in Poland. The events, prepared by different organisations – a local branch of the Association of Vietnamese in Poland, an official organisation cooperating with the authorities of Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and pro-democratic activists – provide an insight into the community’s internal diversity. The analysis indicates that the political involvement of the organising parties influences their choice of particular style of presentation, with a profound impact on the attractiveness of the festival for the two important segments of audience: the Vietnamese youth brought up in Poland and the Polish spectators. The paper is based on fieldwork research which the author has been conducting among the Vietnamese community in Poland for many years.

The article explores social relations between festivals, consumption, and urban spaces. The study deals with two city festivals, Sea Festival and International Short Film Festival Tinklai, in post-Soviet city Klaipeda, Lithuania, over the period of 1991–2010, and impact of consumption on the geography of festivals’ locations within the city. We argue that modern festivals gradually move to those urban spaces which lost their functionality and can be easily transformed into temporary places of controlled consumption. Festivals set urban spaces for new sociality of emotional community, while physical arrangements of festival territories reproduce more general patterns of social distinctions and hierarchies. Methodological assumptions of the study come from Bourdieu’s typology of taste, De Certeau’s idea of urban space signification practices, and H. Lefebvre’s theory of urban space production.

The term “alternative theatre” assumes the conscious adoption of a critical and rebellious attitude against the existing social and political status quo. What is more, it assumes a desire by artists of the theatre to supplant the existing methods of social communication with other, more creative ways, which better contribute to the self-development of individuals who participate in the process. Here, theatrical performance signifies the wish of theatrical artists to change the structure of their contemporaries’ perception and valorisation of the world. Bearing in mind this preliminary assumptions the authors of the article focus on the selected topics: the concept of alternative theatre, the Polish alternative theatre experience as a part of universal countercultural movement, the outdoor and site specific theatre festivals as a tool for social change and the future prospects of the alternative theatre in Poland.

The purpose of the paper is a comparative critical analysis of open competition calls for proposals for the implementation of public tasks in the field of culture, art, and protection of cultural and national heritage announced by public entities, based on the analysis of e-documents such as announcements and regulations of open competition offers and results, published in the form of ranking lists, selected contests for offers from 2011–2020, from the perspective of the organizer of a classical music festival in Krakow.

Celem artykułu jest analiza okoliczności narodzin dokumentalistyki muzycznej oraz wskazanie źródeł języka filmowego, którym po dziś posługują się jej twórcy. Przedmiotem dociekań są zarówno tradycyjne dokumenty muzyczne, tzw. rockumentaries, jak i filmowe rejestracje koncertów oraz festiwali. Badając genezę powstania muzycznego kina faktów, autor szczególną uwagę poświęca aspektom technologicznym, a także ich oddziaływaniu na kształt oraz estetykę dzieł zaliczanych do tego nurtu. Rozważania koncentrują się wokół klasycznych tytułów powstałych w duchu direct cinema, ponieważ to właśnie w kinie bezpośrednim Kicka odnajduje źródła większości cech dystynktywnych współczesnej dokumentalistyki muzycznej.
The aim of the article is the analysis of the rise of music documentaries and defining the source of the film language employed by its creators. The subject of research are both traditional film documentaries, the so called rockumentaries, and film recordings of concerts and festivals. Through examining the genesis of the musical fact based cinema, the author devotes special attention to technological aspects, as well as their impact on the shape and aesthetics of the works of art belonging to this genre. The considerations revolve around classic titles created in the spirit of direct cinema, because it is direct cinema that Kicka defines as the source of the most distinctive features of contemporary music documentary.

The article analyses the royal proclamation of Ferdinand VI in Cusco (Peru) which took place on 23 September 1747, on the birthday of the king. A reconstruction of the celebration was possible thanks to two sources: the city chronicle written in the mid-eighteenth century by Diego de Esquivel y Navía and an occasional print containing a description of the ceremony by José Antonio Santander (1748). The article discusses three aspects of the presented celebrations. First of all, it presents the general context, i.e. the problem of festival celebrations related to the royal family as a part of the Spanish crown policy. Secondly, it details artistic issues related to the celebrations. It includes a description of the artistic setting with the features of occasional architecture and ephemeral painting. Finally, the article examines the local, social and political contexts of the celebrations, read as a manifestation of the city’s emancipation efforts based on the emphasis of Cusco’s antiquity and its rich imperial tradition in the Pre-Hispanic period.

The main goal of this paper is to show the strategies of dealing with the pandemic circumstances chosen by three of the city’s festivals: EtnoKraków/Crossroads, Sacrum Profanum, and Unsound. Emerging from their diverse approaches is a new hybrid festival formula, which brings with it brand new challenges. These include: new models of interaction between organisers, artists, and audiences; reorganisation of festival space; new patterns of audience accessibility and new forms of exclusion/openness; opportunities and barriers for (virtual) cultural exchange; and finally, a recalibration and blurring of the public and private dimensions brought about by the new types of festival experience. Indeed, it could even be argued that the live event sector is facing significant change in the very concept of “liveness”. The analysis is based both on existing data concerning processes of music festival production and consumption (press articles, reviews, and reports) and semi-structured interviews with artistic directors, managers and producers of the selected festivals, held in 2020/2021.
Głównym celem niniejszego tekstu jest przedstawienie strategii radzenia sobie z sytuacją pandemiczną wybrane przez trzy krakowskie festiwale: EtnoKraków/Crossroads, Sacrum Profanum i Unsound. Z ich różnorodnych podejść wyłania się nowa, hybrydowa formuła festiwalu, za którą idą zupełnie nowe wyzwania. Wśród nich można wymienić: nowe modele interakcji między organizatorami, artystami i publicznością; reorganizacja przestrzeni festiwalowej; nowe wzory dostępu dla publiczności nowe formy wykluczenia i otwarcia; okazje i bariery dla (wirtualnej) wymiany kulturowej; i wreszcie, nowe typy przeżycia festiwalowego spowodowały zmianę i zatarcie granic między wymiarami publicznym i prywatnym. W rzeczy samej, można nawet twierdzić, że sektor wydarzeń na żywo jest skonfrontowany ze znaczącymi przemianami samego rozumienia pojęcia "żywości". Analiza jest oparta zarówno na danych zastanych dotyczących procesów produkcji i konsumpcji festiwali muzycznych (artykuły prasowe/recenzje, raporty), jak również pół ustrukturyzowanych wywiadach z dyrektorami artystycznymi, menadżerami i producentami wybranych festiwali, przeprowadzonych w 2020/2021.

Artykuł jest recenzją książki Marcina Adamczaka Kapitały przemysłu filmowego. Hollywood, Europa, Chiny (2020). Autor monografii opisuje w niej sposoby funkcjonowania współczesnego rynku filmowego. Książka składa się z trzech rozdziałów dotyczących: hollywoodzkiego systemu kinematograficznego, od jego początków do czasów obecnych; europocentrycznego podsystemu festiwalowego opartego na budowaniu prestiżu społecznego, kulturowego i symbolicznego; oraz wzrastającej roli Chin w pejzażu współczesnej produkcji i dystrybucji filmów. Książka zawiera też propozycje metodologiczne, które mogą być wykorzystywane w dalszych badaniach dotyczących nie tylko działania rynku filmowego, ale również innych przemysłów kreatywnych, choć nie sposób przewidzieć, czy w świecie postcovidowym rynki te będą funkcjonowały według zasad opisanych w książce Adamczaka.
Review of Marcin Adamczak’s book on the functioning of the modern film market: Kapitały przemysłu filmowego. Hollywood. Europa. Chiny [Capitals of the Film Industry: Hollywood. Europe. China] (2020). The book consists of three chapters, which describe: the Hollywood cinematographic system from its beginnings to the present day; the Eurocentric festival subsystem based on building social, cultural and symbolic prestige; and the growing role of China in the landscape of contemporary film production and distribution. The book contains also methodological proposals, which can be used in further research concerning not only the functioning of the film market, but also other creative industries, although it is impossible to predict whether in the post-covid world these markets  will function according to the rules described by Adamczak.

Artykuł stanowi próbę semiotycznej interpretacji fenomenu ukraińskich Czerniowiec. Kontekstem metodologicznym jest zarówno tradycja semiotyki kultury (zwłaszcza tartusko-moskiewska szkoła semiotyczna), jak i współczesne jej kontynuacje (np. socjosemiotyka czy studia wizualne). Dzięki połączeniu tych perspektyw analiza miasta jako systemu znaków nie ogranicza się wyłącznie do jego historii, ale także do zupełnie współczesnej sytuacji miasta, które chciałoby odgrywać na nowo rolę ważnego ośrodka wielokulturowej Europy i angażuje w tym celu rozmaite podmioty (politycy, artyści, mieszkańcy, turyści, ale także badacze miasta). Pojęcie centralne rozważań stanowi palimpsest, rozumiany jako wielowarstwowy tekst miasta, ale przede wszystkim jako tekst żywy. Semiotyczna analiza miasta-palimpsestu polega bowiem na odczytywaniu znaków jego przeszłości, ale także na interpretacji ciągłego pisania znaków nowych, widocznych zarówno w przestrzeni miejskiej, jak i w narracjach o mieście tworzonych dzisiaj – turystycznych, marketingowych, politycznych czy literackich (ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem Międzynarodowego Poetyckiego Festiwalu Meridian Czernowitz). Miasto-palimpsest jest zatem miastem rozumianym jako swoiste dzieło sztuki, które – z jednej strony – wymaga interpretacji zaszyfrowanych w nim sensów, z drugiej – w rozmaity sposób aktualizuje te sensy w procesie ponownego budowania swej marki.
The article is an attempt of a semiotic interpretation of the phenomenon of Ukrainian city, Chernivtsi. The methodological context is the tradition of the cultural semiotics (especially the Tartu-Moscow school of semiotics), as well as its current continuations (e.g. sociosemiotics or visual studies). Thanks to the combination of these perspectives, the analysis of the city as a sign system is not limited to its history, but also to the completely contemporary situation of the city, which would like to play anew role of an important multicultural center of Europe and engage various entities for this purpose (politicians, artists, inhabitants, tourists but also city researchers). The central concept of considerations is palimpsest, understood as a multi-layered text of the city, but above all as a vivid text. The semiotic analysis of the city-palimpsest is based on reading the signs of its past, but also on the interpretation of the continuous writing of new signs, visible both in urban space and narratives about the city created today – touristic, marketing, political or literary (with particular emphasis on The International Poetry Festival “Meridian Czernowitz”). The city-palimpsest is thus a city understood as a work of art, which on the one hand requires the interpretation of senses encoded in it, and on the other hand it updates these senses in a different way in the process of rebuilding its brand.

An organization, thanks to the right marketing strategy, can better adapt to its environment, which is a key element of strategic management. Therefore, this article addresses the issue of consumer behaviour relative to festivals. The first part of the paper features a brief description of consumers of music, film, and theatre festivals in Poland based on surveys, and the second part describes cultural consumers’ market behaviour. The researchers collected data for this study on N=891 consumers of five Polish festivals in 2016/2017.
W firmach zorientowanych na marketing, konsumenci znajdują się w centrum uwagi, a rozpoznanie ich zachowań rynkowych i preferencji jest punktem wyjścia w procesie kształtowania strategii marketingowej. Organizacja, dzięki odpowiedniej strategii marketingowej, może lepiej dostosować się do swojego otoczenia, które jest kluczowym elementem zarządzania strategicznego. Dlatego w artykule rozważano kwestię zachowań konsumenckich w odniesieniu do festiwali. Pierwsza część artykułu zawiera krótki opis konsumentów festiwali muzycznych, filmowych i teatralnych w Polsce, a druga część w oparciu o badania ankietowe, opisuje zachowania rynkowe konsumentów usług kulturalnych. Autorzy zebrali dane do tego badania na próbie (N = 891) konsumentów pięciu polskich festiwali w roku 2016/2017.

The Romans practiced magic in their private and public life. Besides magical practices against the property and lives of people, the Romans also used generally known and used protective and healing magic. Sometimes magical practices were used in official religious ceremonies for the safety of the civil and sacral community of the Romans.
Die Römer praktizierten Magie in ihrem privaten und öffentlichen Leben. Neben magische Praktiken gegen das Eigentum und das Leben von Menschen, verwendeten die Römer auch allgemein bekannte und verwendete Schutz- und Heilmagie. Manchmal wurden magische Praktiken in offiziellen religiösen Zeremonien zur Sicherheit der bürgerlichen und sakralen Gemeinschaft der Römer angewendet.
