Opis:
From past to the present, cultural, medicinal, landscape and culinary use of junipers has contrib- uted to it being one of the most widely distributed woody plants in the world. Therefore, it is so important that finding appropriate production methods to obtain quality seedlings in line with the usage area. In the present study, it was tried to determine the best conditions and applications on propagation by cuttings of three juniper taxa including Juniperus communis L. ‘Hibernica’, Juniperus chinensis L. ‘Stricta’, and Juniperus chinensis L. ‘Stricta Variegata’. For this purpose, two different greenhouse treatments (Greenhouse-1 with the air temperature at 20±2°C, rooting table temperature at 25±2°C and humidity level at 70±2%; Green- house-2 with the air temperature at 20±2°C, rooting table temperature at 20±2°C and humidity level at 70±2%) and different auxin applications (Indole-3-Butyric Acid, Indole-3-Acetic Acid and α-Naphthalene Acetic Acid at concentrations of 3000 and 5000 ppm) were designed. The highest rooting percentages were generally achieved in Greenhouse-1. IAA 5000 ppm treatment for J. communis ‘Hibernica’ (93.33%) and J. chinensis ‘Stricta’ (66.67%, also in Greenhouse-2) and IBA 3000 ppm treatment for J. chinensis ‘Stricta Var- iegata’ (60.00%) showed the best rooting results. This study, in which the best production conditions are investigated in some juniper taxa, is a guiding feature for the producers to ensure the sustainable utilization of junipers.

Relationship between the degree of cutting lignification and rooting ability was studied. Anatomical changes in cuttings were observed, too. The study involved azalea hybrids from groups: Gent, Rustica Flore Pleno, Occidentale and Knap Hill, which can be propagated vegetatively by shoot cuttings. The cuttings were apical parts of shoots, 7-10 cm long. They were collected at various stages of lignification. Rooting was performed in a greenhouse with controlled temperature of the rooting bed. Only the penetrating observation of mother plants allows to determine the best period of taking the cuttings. The cuttings were treated with a growth regulator, 0.5% IBA (indolebutyric acid), combined with Captan in talcum powder. Sand and peat (1:2) were used as a medium for rooting.

Large number of parental plants are required during hybridization in order to generate enough progeny needed for evaluation. Cowpea is propagated through seeds, this increases the waiting period as the plant has to complete its juvenile phase before flowering. Asexual propagation approach was employed on cowpea using the vine cuttings of flowering plants. The vine cuttings were planted in sterilized top soil and they began flowering 14 days after cutting without adding fertilizer. Success was obtained using this method which increases the rate at which the hybrids needed for multi-location trial were obtained.

All rose cultivars are propagated by asexual methods and the one of them is hardwood cuttings rooting. The aim of the study was to verify the possibility of effective propagation of shrub and pillar roses of different origin by hardwood cuttings. The shoots were collected in autumn. The cuttings were prepared and planted in spring. The rooting were conducted in open field and greenhouse. There were used commercial rooting powders containing IBA or NAA: Ukorzeniacz AB aqua, Ukorzeniacz B aqua, Rhizopon AA 020 XX, Chryzotek beige 004 XX, Ukorzeniacz – korzonek D DS. Of the ten cultivars chosen for the present experiment, only two took root effectively, with good quality rooted cuttings: ‘Excelsa’ (31.2% in open field, 56.5% in greenhouse) and ‘New Dawn’ (18.7% in open field, 14.3% in greenhouse). Using commercial rooting stimulants did not guarantee an increase in the number or in the parameters of growth of the rooted cuttings. The most effective preparation was Chryzotek beige 004 XX for ‘Poppius’ (38.0%) rooted in the open field, and for ‘Kew Rambler’ (23.5%) in the greenhouse.

Sadzonki pobierano jesienią, przechowywano i sadzono wiosną. Ukorzenianie przeprowadzono na polu doświadczalnym i w szklarni. Użyto komercyjnych preparatów wspomagających ukorzenianie w postaci pudrowej zawierających IBA lub NAA: Ukorzeniacz AB aqua, Ukorzeniacz B aqua, Rhizopon AA 020 XX, Chryzotek beige 004 XX, Ukorzeniacz – korzonek D DS.

Flowering and fruit setting was analyzed in specimens of Chamedaphne calyculata (L.) Moench growing in a natural stand in the “Sicienko” reserve in the Drawa National Park. Seed production, seed viability and shoot rooting was investigated. It was shown that Chamaedaphne calyculata has abundant flowers but sets few fruits. Numerous seeds (even up to 87) were found in fruits; however, the percentage of developed seeds was low and ranged from 17% to 45%. The viability of developed seeds was similarly low (maximum 29%). The performed germination test showed a positive effect of stratification on the breaking of seed dormancy. Obtaining seedlings from seeds sown in vitro on agar medium was a considerable success. Shoots cut perpendicularly to the shoot axis, with a 1-cm incision on the side and treated with a rooting agent, rooted 100%. Shoots which were not treated with a rooting agent, irrespective of their having been incised or not, rooted 78%.

Opis:
We examined whether peroxidase activity in cutting bases and leaves and starch content in cutting bases can be used as rooting phase markers in the elepidote rhododendron cv. 'Babites Baltais' (Rhododendron L.). Changes in peroxidase activity in cutting leaves and bases, as well as starch content in cutting bases, were determined in relation to anatomical stages of rhizogenesis in leaf bud cuttings treated with 1% indole-3-butyric acid (IBA+) or without IBA (IBA–). The pattern of change of peroxidase activity was similar in cutting bases and leaves of IBAleaf bud cuttings. Three phases of adventitious root formation were identified: induction, initiation and expression. During the induction phase peroxidase activity decreased, but no anatomical changes were observed in the cuttings. Peroxidase activity increased in the initiation phase when adventitious root initials were formed. Peroxidase activity decreased during the expression phase when adventitious root primordia developed. The starch content of IBA– leaf bud cuttings decreased during the first few days and then gradually rose to maximum, followed by a sharp reduction and another increase at the end of the experiment. The changes of starch content did not coincide with rooting phases as peroxidase activity did, and cannot be used as a rooting phase marker in rhododendrons. Adventitious root formation did not occur in IBA+ leaf bud cuttings, so distinct rooting phases could not be observed. There was a significant correlation between peroxidase activity in cutting bases and leaves of IBA- leaf bud cuttings. Peroxidase activity in leaves of rhododendron leaf bud cuttings are potentially useful as a marker for rooting phases, but that requires further anatomical and physiological study of rooting in leaf bud cuttings.

Opis:
The study was carried out to investigate the domestication potential of Flacourtia jangomas (Lour.) Raeusch, a wild fruit species in Bangladesh, through nursery raising from seeds and clonal propagation by stem cutting. Air dried seeds were treated with four different pre-sowing treatments i.e., control (T0), seeds soakedin coldwater for 24 h (T1), 48 h (T2), or 72 h (T3) to explore the seedgermination ability of the species. Pre-sowing treatments significantly enhancedthe germination period, germination percentage andbiomass production of seedlings. The early germination (least imbibition period), highest germination percentage (81.3) and total dry biomass (0.52 g) was observed in T2 (seeds soaked in cold water for 48 h) while the lowest germination percentage (53.7) andtotal dry biomass (0.23 g) was observedin T3 andT0 respectively. The plant species was highly amenable for rooting for clonal propagation. However, the rooting ability of cuttings was significantly affectedby the application of IBA. The highest rooting percentage (100), maximum root number (5.63), the longest root length (3.28 cm) andbest survival (85.0%) were obtainedfrom the cuttings treatedwith 0.4% IBA solution followed by 0.2% IBA andthe lowest was in cuttings without treatment. Therefore, pre-sowing treatment ‘soaking of seeds in cold water for 48 h for nursery raising and ‘0.4% IBA treatment’ of stem cuttings for clonal propagation may be recommended for mass production of quality planting stocks for the domestication of the species through homestead agroforestry or in fruit orchards.

As a result of the simulation, it was found that a characteristic, rapid increase of the loosening force of the chip element occurs when stratification is directed in relation to the cutting direction at an angle of ca. 160°.

Opis:
Lachenalia is a poorly known genus of ornamental bulbous plants from South Africa with a huge floricultural potential. The paper discusses in vivo multiplication with leaf cuttings of Lachenalia cv. ‘Namakwa’, ‘Romaud’, ‘Ronina’ and ‘Rupert’. Mature leaves were collected from non-flowering donor plants. Each leaf was halved to make proximal and distal leaf cuttings. ‘Ronina’ distal leaf cuttings produced the lowest number of bulblets (5.7 per cutting), while ‘Namakwa’ proximal leaf cuttings turned out the most productive (10.5 bulblets per cutting). The bulblets produced by cv. ‘Namakwa’ distal leaf cuttings were the lightest (0.3 g per bulblet), and those formed on cv. ‘Ronina’ proximal leaf cuttings were the heaviest (0.9 g per bulblet). In general, the weight of individual bulblets ranged from 0.1 to 1.2 g. Irrespective of the cutting type, the leaves of cv. ‘Namakwa’ produced the greatest number of bulblets, and the leaves of ‘Ronina’ yielded the heaviest bulblets. With no dependence on their genotype, proximal leaf cuttings were advantageous in terms of total number of generated bulblets and their quality (weight, diameter).

Sadzonki odmian ‘Angustifolia’ i ‘Suffruticosa’ sporządzano w trzech terminach: 30 maja, 15 i 30 czerwca 2004 roku.
In nurseries Buxus sempervirens is propagated by semi hard-wood cuttings from August to April, when plants are dormant. Such process lasts 3-5 months. The purpose of this study was to examine if it is possible to propagate buxus from soft-wood cuttings, taken from young, intensively growing shoots. Such cuttings of buxus cultivars 'Angustifolia’ and ‘Suffriticosa’ were taken at three dates, from the end of May to the end of June 2004. Half of them was treated with rooting stimulator „Ukorzeniacz AB” (containing IBA and NAA), the rest were the control cuttings. On average, the cuttings rooted in 71%. The best term for rooting was the earliest one, 30th of May. Treating with „Ukorzeniacz AB” increased the percentage of rooting, but did not influence the quality of root system. The results showed that Buxus sempervirens can be propagated from soft-wood cuttings in May and June. What is more, such propagation can shorten the whole process, as cuttings had strong root systems after 56 days.
