Opis:
In literary theory, the works of (ethnic) minority authors–and similarly, the works of authors dealing with minorities–are often referred to as “assimilation narrative.” This term tends to suggest that minority authors, who write in the language of their country, seek a place in society through assimilation. Assimilation, however, means melting up in the majority nation by adopting all the values, customs and way of life characteristic of the majority, and abandoning, leaving behind, giving up the original traditional values, ethics, lifestyle, religion etc. of the minority. Assimilation means disappearing without a trace, continuing life as a new person, with new values, language, a whole set of new cultural assets. In this paper an effort is made to show that this is in fact not what many of the ethnic minority writers look for, so the term assimilation narrative is in many, although certainly not all, the cases, erroneuosly applied. It is justified to make a distinction between assimilation and integration narratives, as the two are not the same. In the paper examples are provided from Hispanic-American literature (Mexican-American, Puerto Rican and Dominican), across a range of genres from prose through drama to poetry, and also, examples are discussed when the author does in fact seek assimilation, as well as stories in which neither assimilation, nor integration is successful.

Opis:
Adaptation is the process of adjustment of an individual organism to environmental conditions while integration is the process of opening a group, community, place or organization to all members, regardless of race, religion gender or social class. The dynamics of the process of transition of Igbomina people from rural to urban society was gradual and spread over a long time. They initially established in town the socio-political institutions and behavioral patterns which were familiar to them to fulfill most of the needs, which they met in urban environment. Even in later migration, there were not many changes to the pattern of family life. Migrants retained their rural system of traditional values; the concept of the urban culture did not develop due to the well-established culture of circular migration. The range of relationships that ethnic groups maintained among one another within the frame work of contemporary migratory phenomena includes cases such as assimilation, pacific coexistence and animosity. It must be underlined however, that in spite of the integration process, the identity of Igbomina was not obliterated. The transition process of Igbomina into Lagos urban society could therefore be best described as acculturation rather than assimilation in that Igbomina culture in Lagos cannot be described as an extension of the northern Yoruba sub-culture from where they came to Lagos, it was rather a symbiotic relationship between the Yoruba, Hausa, Ibo etc. living together as neighbours.

The objective of this paper is to present an automatic monitoring system for the 3D CEMBS model in the operational version. This predictive, eco hydrodynamic model is used as a tool to control the conditions and bio productivity of the Baltic sea environment and to forecast physical and ecological changes in the studied basin. Satellite-measured data assimilation is used to constrain the model and achieve higher accuracy of its results. 3D CEMBS is a version of the Community Earth System Model, adapted for the Baltic Sea. It consists of coupled ocean and ice models, working in active mode together with the ecosystem module. Atmospheric forecast from the UM model (Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling of the Warsaw University) are used as a forcing fields feed through atmospheric data model. In addition, river inflow of freshwater and nutrient deposition from 71 main rivers is processed by land model. At present, satellite data from AQUA MODIS, processed by the SatBałtyk project Operational System are used for the assimilation of sea surface temperature and chlorophyll a concentration. In the operational mode, 48-hour forecasts are produced at six-hour intervals, providing a wide range of hydrodynamic and biochemical parameters.

A young Chinese immigrant’s aversion to his Chinese origin and his self-identifi cation as purely American gives much food for thought to the author: Whoand what American edu-cation has been aiming to educate its students to be and what is impeding multiculturalism from being cultivated in education. The article points out that American schools have long been serving to Americanize its immigrant population regardless of where they are originally from, ethnically, linguistically, culturally, and religiously, and in spite of the country’s long--standing and ever-growing diversity. Without challenging the structural inequality inherent in “assimilation”, true multiculturalism will not be realized in education.

Magazines of national minorities can be a source to learn about them. The article analyzes selected issues of the journal “Biuletyn Ormiańskiego Towarzystwa Kulturalnego”, which have been published by Armenians in Poland since 1993. The author is interested in the picture of contemporary Armenia in this periodical. The analysis showed that there are relatively few messages about today’s Armenia in this journal. This is because Armenians in Poland are very assimilated and they are mainly interested in the history of their own group. And yet in the Bulletin there is more information about contemporary Armenia than in other Polish magazines.

Opis:
What happens when people of different cultures, values, religion live together? Sociological studies on immigrative phenomenon often swing between immigration and integration policies. These policies actually reveal the difficulty of the host society to institutionalize new models of social differences accompanying multiculturalism. Immigrants who “arrive” continue their life in a place where they do not passively participate in the passing of time, but become actors. Pressed by the hegemonic culture of the host society to adapt, do not cease to practice their religious and origin cultural expressions, often in conditions of urban spatial and social marginalization, they resist assimilation with ethnic persistence strategies. Considering the impact of religion and origin cultural values on expression of differences, it is important to consider their role in the integration process. And, above all-facilitate or hinder integration? These dynamics have been analyzed in a research study on immigrants’ integration process in Palermo. The main results are presented in this paper. In this case study, the research’s data hypothesizes a theoretical model of integration in which immigrants, free to express their religious and cultural differences, tend to reduce their perception of minority

The aim of this article was to make an attempt to outline the perception of the acculturation process of Ukrainian children in Polish schools in their parents. Applying Berry's theory of acculturation, it was demonstrated that the systemic solutions concerning the education of children of a national minority in public institutions are rooted in the classical model of assimilation. The attitudes of the children’s parents who came to Poland for work or to escape war also indicate a desire to assimilate their children in the school environment as soon as possible, and at the same time to separate them in the home environment or in the group of compatriots.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to present, on the basis of source materials and historiographical findings, the regularities associated with the evolution of the Wallachian settlement in Thessaloniki in the 19th and 20th centuries. In this case, a rapid process of assimilation of the newcomers into the local Greek-speaking Orthodox community is noticeable. It took place in the context of coexistence between individual Wallachian families and the Greek population in cultural and economic terms. At the root of integration of Wallachians with the Greeks were the religious community (subordination to the Patriarchate of Constantinople, common churches and liturgy in Greek), the lack of an adequately established Wallachian language tradition, and the impossibility of implementing their traditions (identified with a pastoral-transhumant economy) in urban socio-economic realities. As a result, the settlers in Thessaloniki became Hellenized in a linguistic and national sense, but they kept also some cultural distinctions, defined in terms of kinship or places of origin. This situation could not be altered by cultural activities of Romania, which at the turn of the 20th century aimed at establishing national and linguistic ties with individual Wallachian communities.

Primeval East Church was very careful in the use of classical greek's terms specyfying love. The article presents conception breaking above tendency − the idea of ecstatic, ardent eros in St. Gregory's of Nyssa first written tractate − De virginitate, and is intended to submit variety of types of love and role of love in virginal life. The bishop of Nyssa, seeing main purpose of all human efforts in assimilation to God, emphasizes the virtue of chastity, which increases with love. Owing to this virtue, soul-bride reflects in itself intertrinitarian relations. Through love man rises his nature, assuming triad assigned to nature of God: holiness, impeccability and chastity, and becoming completely and entirely open to experience of spiritual marriage with God.

Social challenges with the economic background result from social stratification not only within one society, but especially between societies. The division between wealthy north (with the visible trend of growing standards of life) and poor south (where the tendency is reverse due to high unemployment rates, overpopulation, housing and health problems as well as water and food shortages) is being more and more visible. Economic migrations have become a commonplace and also a source of further and more complicated political issues. They are pushing multicultural approaches forward on the one hand, but on the other aggravate ethnic conflicts, stimulate xenophobic and nationalist movements. Assimilation problems resulting from reluctance of indigenous societies and resistance of the migrants because of traditions, habits, values and religious beliefs only deepen dissimilarities in perception of how the coexistence should look like. This in turn imposes certain legislative and normative problems on governments and local societies and their administration. Aging of societies, which is mainly the problem of the most developed European countries, which are host countries for economic migrants at the same time, does not make this problem easier. This article will focus on most durging social problems in Europe which have conflict-generating potential, i.e. overpopulation on the one hand and aging of societies on the other, poverty and social stratifi cation, migrations and resulting assimilation problems.
