Opis:
A method is proposed for the determination of propeller forces during ship maneuvering. Artificial neural networks were applied to the performance prediction of a propeller working under such conditions as braking, stopping and running astern. Furthermore, an effect of oblique motion of a maneuvering ship, is studied by means of computational fluid dynamics methods. Wake distributions in the propeller plane are presented when the drift angle gets higher. A simple application example of the discussed methods is presented for a real case of a maneuvering ship.
W pracy zaproponowano metodę służącą do określania sił śruby napędowej podczas manewrowania statkiem. Do wyznaczenia charakterystyk śruby napędowej pracujacej w warunkach hamowania, zatrzymania i ruchu wstecz zastosowano sztuczne sieci neuronowe. Ponadto, przy pomocy metod numerycznej mechaniki płynów uwzględniono efekt skośnego ruchu kadłuba manewrującego statku. Zaprezentowano obliczone podczas zwiększania się kąta dryfu rozkłady strumienia nadążającego w płaszczyźnie kręgu śrubowego. W oparciu o prosty przykład przedyskutowano możliwość zastosowania zaprezentowanej metody dla rzeczywistego przypadku manewrującego statku.

Opis:
Water-lubricated bearings have been applied to support ship screw shafts for over a hundered years. Development of plastic materials has caused that novel sliding polymers appeared available on the market and being approved by classification institutions, possible to be applied in shipbuilding. However in the subject – matter literature there is no reference to application of bearings fitted with metal or ceramic bushes in shipbuilding. Nevertheless they have important merits such as low resistance to motion, long service life or stability of form. But some doubts are evoked by their large value of shape elasticity module which can lead to local stress concentration at the bush edges in the case of non-axiality of bush and shaft axes. Hence this work has been aimed at the testing of a bearing made of bronze-graphite silter. In the work is presented a comparison of measurement results of resistance to motion , hydrodynamic pressure distributions in lubricating film as well as shaft axis trajectories of the bearing, with those made for a typical elastic polymer bearing. The measurement results have showed high quality of the tested material. In the opinion of these authors it could be applicable to bearing ship propeller shafts.

The article refers to results and conclusions on post-emergency repairs of a turbo-charging system of a DEUTZ engine of the SBV 8M 628 type of 1715 kW – the main power unit of a cement carrier. The failure of the turbocharger led to severing of a part of the exhaust outlet valve head. In order to determine the cause of the turbocharger fault, parametric identification of the reference state of the turbocharging system interacting with the ship main power engine has been carried out. The post-emergency servicing of the turbocharger comprised mounting a new blade rim of expansive instruments of smaller capacity than the so far used. Control measurement results of the power system after the replacement of the turbocharger turbine nozzle have been presented. Limitations of correct engine operation have been noted in the range of maximum load with continuous power (MCR). A range of corrective maintenance servicing of fuel equipment has been presented. Using the values of measured torque at the propeller shaft, incorrect interaction between the shaft and the main engine has been noted. A new propeller, adequate to the design operational parameters of the engine characteristics, has been chosen and mounted. The correctness of turbine expansive instrument replacement has been verified by correct interaction between the elements of the power system: propeller – main engine – turbocharging system. Thus, a wider range of economically acceptable ship operation has been obtained.

In the paper the current and future possibilities of the R-JH3 method are discussed. The R-JH3 method (presented in detail in [27]) was elaborated for the ship power prediction on the basis of a new definition of the open-water propeller fully equivalent to the behind-the--hullpropeller. The R-JH3 method can be used to determine the mean effective velocity and the mean effective pitch coefficient of the behind propeller. The R-JH3 method may be very useful for scale-effect investigations and scale-effect designation when results of model self-propulsion test have to be transformed to the ship scale.

Opis:
Propellers usually operate in the ship’s stern, where the inflow of the non-uniform wake generates oscillating loads and changes the hydrodynamic performance. Therefore, determination of the forces on propellers and hydrodynamic performance due to a non-uniform wake field are the challenging problems for naval architects and hydrodynamists. The main objectives of the present study are to assess the hydrodynamic performance for a single blade and all the blades. The propeller is a B-series propeller under non-uniform wake field behind the Seiun-Maru (hereafter SM) ship hull. A practical approach is employed to calculate the hydrodynamic oscillating loads of the ship propeller under a non-uniform wake field. Results of the computations on the propeller behind the SM ship, due to a non-uniform wake field, are presented and analyzed using classical mathematical methods over a single cycle. The results show that a variation of thrust with the discussed parameters is the same as that shown for torque, also the blade-frequency of the total force, thrust and torque is an increasing function of radial sections, whereas these parameters decrease with increasing radial blade sections.

Opis:
The presented paper numerically carries out the investigation of the hydrodynamic performance of the propeller behind the ship with and without wake equalizing duct (WED). It is mounted in front of the propeller in order to equalize the ship’s wake flow and improve the propeller performance. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis software STAR-CCM solver was adopted to simulate the KP505 propeller behind the KRISO container ship (KCS) using overlapping grid technology and user-defined functions. To obtain the effect of a –duct on propeller performance, the ship bare hull case, the with-propeller case, and the with-propeller-and-duct case are also computed. Together, these computations provide for a –complete CFD comparison of the duct effects. Also, the Taguchi design of the experiment method is applied to investigate three parameters (angle of attack, trailing edge radius, and chord length) of the duct. Finally, the main dimensions are obtained, and the thrust and torque coefficients are presented and discussed for one blade and whole blades during one cycle. Based on the numerical results, it is indicated that good design increases efficiency by 1.67%, and a –bad design may reduce efficiency by 3.25%. Also, the effect of the WED caused to decrease the pressure pulse by 35.9% in the face side of the propeller blade.

The article presents research results performed on aluminum bronze CuAl10Fe5Ni5 (BA1055) castings used for marine propellers. Metallographic studies were made on light microscope and a scanning electron microscope to assess quantitatively and qualitatively the alloy microstructure. It has been shown that the shape, size and distribution of the iron-rich κ−phase precipitates in bronze microstructure significantly affect its mechanical properties. With an increase in the number of small κ−phase precipitates increases the tensile strength of castings, while the presence of large globular precipitates improves ductility. Fragmentation and shape of κ−phase precipitates depends on many factors, particularly on the chemical composition of the alloy, Fe/Ni ratio, cooling rate and casting technology.

Opis:
In this study, the impact of propeller emergence on the performance of a ship (speed), propeller (thrust, torque, and RPM), a diesel engine (torque and RPM) and fuel consumption are analysed under severe sea conditions. The goal is to describe the variation in the system variables and fuel consumption rather than analysing the motion of the ship or the phenomenon of propeller ventilation in itself. A mathematical model of the hull, propeller, and engine interactions is developed in which the propeller emergence is included. The system parameters are set using model experiments, empirical formulae, and available data for the engine. The dynamic response of the system is examined in regular head waves under submerged and emerged conditions of the propeller. The pulsatility and the extent of variation of 20 selected variables for the coupled system of hull, propeller, and engine are elaborated using quantitative and qualitative terms and absolute and relative scales. The simulation begins with a ship moving on a straight path, in calm water, with a constant speed for the ship, propeller and engine under steady conditions. The ship then encounters regular head waves with a known time series of the total resistance of the ship in waves. Large motions of the ship create propeller emergence, which in turn reduces the propeller thrust and torque. This study shows that for a specific ship, the mean ship speed, shaft angular velocity, and engine power were slightly reduced in submerged conditions with respect to calm water. We compared the mean values of the variables to those in the emerged condition, and found that the shaft angular velocity was almost the same, the ship speed was considerably reduced, and the engine power significantly dropped with respect to calm water. The ratios of the amplitude of fluctuation to the mean (Amp/Mean) for the ship speed and angular velocity of the shaft under both conditions were considerable, while the Amp/Mean for the power delivered by the engine was extremely high. The outcomes of the study show the degree of influence of propeller emergence on these variables. We identify the extent of each change and categorise the variables into three main groups based on the results.

Few data on drag and torque on locked propeller towed in water are available in literature. Those data refer to propellers of specific geometry (number of blades, blade area, pitch and skew of blades). The estimation of drag and torque of an arbitrary propeller considered in analysis of ship resistance or propulsion is laborious. The authors collected and reviewed test data available in the literature. Based on collected data there were developed the empirical formulae for estimation of hydrodynamic drag and torque acting on locked screw propeller. Supplementary CFD computations were carried out in order to prove the applicability of the formulae to modern moderately skewed screw propellers.

The paper presents the summary of results of the numerical analysis of the unsteady propeller performance in the non-uniform ship wake modified by the different wake improvement devices. This analysis is performed using the lifting surface program DUNCAN for unsteady propeller analysis. The object of the analysis is a 7000 ton chemical tanker, for which four different types of the wake improvement devices have been designed: two vortex generators, a pre-swirl stator, and a boundary layer alignment device. These produced five different cases of the ship wake structure: the original hull and hull equipped alternatively with four wake improvement devices. Two different propellers were analyzed in these five wake fields, one being the original reference propeller P0 and the other - a specially designed, optimized propeller P3. The analyzed parameters were the pictures of unsteady cavitation on propeller blades, harmonics of pressure pulses generated by the cavitating propellers in the selected points and the fluctuating bearing forces on the propeller shaft. Some of the calculated cavitation phenomena were confronted with the experimental. The objective of the calculations was to demonstrate the differences in the calculated unsteady propeller performance resulting from the application of different wake improvement devices. The analysis and discussion of the results, together with the appropriate conclusions, are included in the paper.

Hydrodynamic shape optimization plays an increasingly important role in the shipping industry. To optimize ship hull and propeller shapes for minimum total (friction+wave) calm-water resistance and maximum open water efficiency, respectively, the main particulars of a hull and propeller model are considered as design variables. The optimization problem is performed by using an integrated hull-propeller system optimization problem (HPSOP) code in a multi-level and multi-point methodology in early-stage ship design. Three numerical methods with variable fidelity are employed to carry out the hydrodynamic performance analysis of a ship’s hull and propeller. A ship and its propeller are selected as initial models to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed optimization procedure. The numerical results show that the developed technique is efficient and robust for hydrodynamic design problems.
